Poll – There’s A Firm Favorite Among Fans For Newcastle Captain

2:50 pm, Thursday, July 16th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 46 Comments

He was our Man of the Match last season, and the Dutch International had a great season in his first season on Tyneside.

25 year-old Daryl Janmaat was also one of the few players who were willing to be interviewed during our terrible 10 game run at the end of the season, when we got only one point, so he showed leadership off the field as well as on it.

Great action shot of Daryl Janmaat against West Ham

Daryl has also made no secret of the fact that he just loves Newcastle – this is what he said at the end of the season:

“I like this club – I love this club already – and I’d love to stay here,” “We’re happy, but we know we have to improve next season as a team and a club.”

In our poll which has close to 6,000 readers voting,  he is the firm favorite with just less than 40% of the vote, followed by local lad Jack Colback on 23%, who has captained he side in the first two pre-season games.

Third is former Ajax captain Siem de Jong.

good shout for me, tho I also think Jack being a Geordie would make good since, but who is more likely to start every game?? did someone say we are now fav to sign Austin???

  • 2 Liverpool Mag // Jul 16, 2015 at 2:57 PM

I like Janmaat but not sure how much of a leader he is. That being said, he’s committed and seemingly loyal, and he can’t exactly be more quiet than Colo. Personally, I’d think de Jong is a better candidate fir captain if he can be fit, he’s a natural leader, perhaps the same for Gini but I don’t know enough about him.

  • 3 Liverpool Mag // Jul 16, 2015 at 2:58 PM

Jamsey #1 someone said in the last post that we are now 1/10 but I don’t think that means anything other than that Porto may get Mitrovic.

some whispers on the ever reliable twitter that bookies have suspended odds on Austin to NUFC after prices got as short as 1/10

  • 5 kevymartins // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:01 PM

Skybet suspended Austin to NUFC something is up.

  • 6 Polarboy // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:04 PM

It seem everyone has now suspended betting on Austin and our odds were the one’s to go the shortest before suspension.

  • 7 ravz09 // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:05 PM

Austin fee agreed – news coming up shortly. Will travel to Newcastle tomorrow!!!

  • 8 mickalfas // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:09 PM

Is there ANY signings approaching the line yet ,or have they used the magic free kick foam ,and its gone now !
    Three weeks left ?

  • 9 lukes26 // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:10 PM

I don’t understand people’s sudden dislike of Colo.

He’s getting older and slower, but still our best defender by quite a distance.

I judge people by the company they keep. He’s well known to be Jonas’s best friend …which makes him ‘ok’ in my book.

  • 10 Polarboy // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:11 PM

The express are running with betting odds, Paddy Power have come out and said it looks as if he’s coming to Newcastle. Great news if true, was starting to get the right hump with all this will they won’t between him and Mitrovic. One question though, is it either or, or both, and if it’s both, and McClaren plans to play 4-2-3-1, would they rotate or what.

  • 11 Our Toon // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:13 PM

Is Janmaat really a leader? Leaders don’t turn there back on the ball as he did for Man Utd’s winner at SJP last season. He’s a good player but has never captained at any level of football, Colback is a geordie so for some reason he should get it….really why not give it to saylor then based on that nonsense? Will Colback or should he even start this season?

If you look at the squad we don’t have many leaders if any, the only one that stands out is SDJ who has captained from youth right through to senior level however he’s got fitness issues. Give it to SDJ and bring in a leader for the defence, to make as Vice.

  • 12 Liverpool Mag // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:14 PM

So if that’s true, no Mitrovic. Not sure how I feel about that but he’s a proven goalscorer in the Premier League, and if we get the new signings we need then I’m sure he will do just fine.

    Cabella—de Jong—Thauvin

isn’t a bad team at all

  • 13 Our Toon // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:15 PM

So Austin it is then, massively underwhelming choice!! Let’s see how he feels when his missus gets hump amd wants to move back to London in 3 months time.

  • 14 hibbit // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:15 PM

luke …….he dines out with charnley every thursday night at loch fyne gosforth………..i am not sure about the company he keeps

  • 15 Our Toon // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:16 PM

    Liverpool Mag

He’s had 1 good season in the prem, a season in which our current striker out scored him based on minutes played. Is this really an upgrade or has desperation kicked in?

  • 16 kakaobi // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:17 PM

I like colo and I’m happy to see him stay on as captain but please let’s get a good solid CB to play along side him. Been watching the odds shorten on Austin all morning this time it looks good hopefully with Mitrovic signing soon the forward line won’t be short of a goal or two

  • 17 Sazzer // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:17 PM

    Porto have 4 strikers already.

    Bueno, Adrian, Aboubakar, Paciência.

Not saying that they will not sign Mitrovic but they have already bought Bueno this summer. And Paciencia is upcoming striker and son of club legend.

  • 18 Our Toon // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:18 PM

Colo is just getting to old to be the main CB, he needs a faster, younger, more athletic cb with him because the ones we have are so bad it’s a disgrace

  • 19 BenbulbenMag // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:18 PM

Ourtoon fair point about SDJ but Colback is a leads by example type and so is Janmaat.

Both of them were far and away the only 2 on the pitch who seemed to give a fiddlers last season and I’d be happy to give either of them a chance.

  • 20 Polarboy // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:19 PM

@Our Toon. How is it underwhelming, the lad has shown he can do the job in the premier, and in an under-performing team at that. Mitrovic has a lot of potential but he’s a risk for one so young and with no experience of a league at the level of the premier league.

  • 21 Dragon64 // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:20 PM

would like to see austin and mitrovic sign. as twitter has gone austin to the toon mad we will soon see???????

  • 22 hibbit // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:21 PM

our toon in the clubs eyes austin has been a target for a long time so i dont think its desperation ,,,,,,,is he good enough i dont know but he is better then we have

  • 23 Our Toon // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:23 PM

    Polar boy

It’s underwhelming because he’s no different to Cisse, Austin isn’t even in the same bracket as Mitrovic so please let’s not go there. Mitrovic at 20 has an all round game, Austin is a poacher like Cisse.

  • 24 will die for the toon army // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:23 PM

I want Mitrovic not Austin OR both. May thats too greedy.

  • 25 Polarboy // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:24 PM

@Dragon64. That’s my question though mate, given that McClaren doesn’t play two up top and we have played 4-2-3-1 in pre-season how would he accommodate two centre forwards who will want to be starting every week. Would either of them be happy rotating and is it wise to rotate your striker anyway when momentum is so important for strikers.

  • 26 Our Toon // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:24 PM

Is he going to improve the starting XI? Why did he do less last season in a more attacking team than cisse did in a defensive and toothless team?

  • 27 Malackay // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:25 PM

Our toon – under your argument we wouldn’t sign another Premiership striker. Didn’t Cisse have the best mins per goal ration in the league last season? So we should rule out Rooney, Costa, Kane etc. too?

I’m unsure about Austin myself but he can finish and has a cracking work rate.

  • 28 Our Toon // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:28 PM

No mate what I’m saying is he isn’t an improvement on what we have in Cisse. It’s laughable that you have to resort to picking players who have more than just goals in there play and are probably 10 levels above Austin.

Kane, let’s see of he does it consistently, Costa….have you seen what he does off the ball as well as on it. Same with Rooney. Are you really comparing Austin to them? Wow

  • 29 Dragon64 // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:29 PM

@Polarboy think he will play with 2 strikers, just want to see us back entertaining the fans gain instead of all the doom and gloom at the moment.

  • 30 deeps // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:30 PM

Sky Bet have suspended betting on Newcastle signing QPR striker Charlie Austin after reporting bets at as short as 1/10. The 26-year-old, who scored 18 goals in his debut season in the Premier League, is widely expected to leave Loftus Road after Rangers were relegated back to the Sky Bet Championship.

  • 31 Thump // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:30 PM

Anybody know why Ed took down his Austin article about the suspended betting?

  • 32 NezzaNUFC // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:32 PM

Austin means NO Mitrovic, simple as that really.

    I’d rather have Mitrovic.

  • 33 Polarboy // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:33 PM

Our Toon. Mate Austin can score many different types of goals, and to compare him to Cisse does him a disservice when he works a lot harder than him. You’re talking about Mitrovic as if he’s been there done it. The fact is that it was always going to be a risk to take a young player to the premier. In any case we may still get both, it’s hard to know what McClaren’s plans are.

  • 34 jazzyp // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:33 PM

Charlie Austin move to #NUFC held up while Mitrovics Dad decides if its a good move for him

  • 35 NezzaNUFC // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:35 PM

Austin is more of a complete forward than just a poacher.

He can score goals on his own and with a partner, he offers more than just sitting on the opposition defenders.

  • 36 Malackay // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:35 PM

I’m clearly not comparing Austin to them. What I was doing was questioning your logic in saying Cisse has better mins per goal ratio than Austin so why would we sign him? Austin played most the season so will undoubtedly have a worse ratio.

IMO given where they are in their respective stages in their careers, Austin would be an improvement on Cisse. Perhaps irrelevant on the pitch, but I like the fact he is English and kept his head under pressure AND scored goals last season, unlike the supposedly more experienced Cisse (suspensions when the club needed him).

Not sure I’d pay up to £15m+ for him though, however we need to understand that if he moves to another club and bags 15-20 goals next season again and thereafter, £15m becomes a bargain.

  • 37 Jamseyd24 // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:35 PM

Some off you people on here are mad, I hope we get Austin, If he score anything close to 18 goals for us I will be over the moon, plus he is English, something we lack.

  • 38 Liverpool Mag // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:36 PM

@Ourtoon You’re right, Cisse statistically did better than him and he is similar to Cisse but not a like for like copy and we do have to consider that Cisse will inevitably get injured again because his knee is most likely going to be a constant issue so it may be good to have two similar strikers, especially if one is used as an impact sub.

Who knows, maybe Austin may end up being a replacement for Shola (let’s forget Riviere exists) and Mitrovic may still happen. And this could all be smokescreen to scare Mitrovic into thinking we’re not at his mercy and will wait for him. Still, two good solid strikers is better than what we have currently, although I’d have preferred Mitrovic.

  • 39 Polarboy // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:36 PM

@Dragon64. Based on previous evidence McClaren prefers 4-2-3-1 and has been using that formation in pre-season. I can’t really see how you can accommodate two classic centre forwards in the set-up.

  • 40 Dragon64 // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:40 PM

you never no he could change his formation loll. but he will have his reason for wanting two strikers if it happens as you say rotaing them won’t work.

  • 41 Polarboy // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:40 PM

Our Toon. Also the point you are making about Cisse and Austin is ridiculous. Are you saying you wouldn’t rather have two natural goalscorers at the club. And the fact is that Austin works a lot harder off the ball than Cisse and his hold up play is also a lot better.

  • 42 hibbit // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:41 PM

nezza you dont know that…… but to me it looks like its mits thats wanting porto not us by all accounts the fee is agreed we have offered him a good contract but he wants porto but do they want him ??

  • 43 mickalfas // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:50 PM

    Centre backs in !!
Come on Penfold ,if Austin is coming don’t rest on your laurels ,get the next one in ,time waits for no man
    Deadwood out !!
Mitrovic would have been a better buy,the slavs are a tough bunch, perfect for the EPL ,his loss

  • 44 mickalfas // Jul 16, 2015 at 3:54 PM

As for having 2 strikers, let’s not forget we have a team of sicknotes ,we need cover all over apart from the MF

  • 45 ToonRich // Jul 16, 2015 at 4:19 PM

@ 39…pre season we have used both 4-2-3-1 and 4-4-2, so your evidence isn’t conclusive!

  • 46 MassiveG // Jul 16, 2015 at 7:21 PM

So Colback is 2nd on our list of captain material but despite a great season No one on this blog picks him in their 11…..
