Soccernews.nl in Holland are reporting that Newcastle are interested in signing Dutch International Leroy Fer, and with QPR being relegated, it seems that Fer will want to leave so he can make the Dutch squad for the Euro 2016 tournament in France next summer.
It seems that Newcastle have won the race to sign Charlie Austin from QPR and maybe they were also negotiating for Leroy Fer while they were talking to Chairman Tony Fernandes.
Leroy Fer scoring against Newcastle
The former Feyenoord, FC Twente and Norwich central midfielder was acquired by QPR a year ago for £8M, after Norwich were relegated and that would be close to the fee Newcastle would presumably pay QPR for him – if this news is accurate.
The 6ft 2ins midfielder is a powerful player who can play attacking midfield in the center or out on the wing – so he would provide more attacking power for Newcastle.
Leroy would seem to be decent buy, having spent two full seasons in the Premier League, so he wouldn’t need any adjusting to the demands of English football.
Leroy also played under Steve McClaren’s second spell at FC Twente from 2012-2013.
He was signed by Norwich two years ago for just £4.5M, so in one year his value almost doubled, with QPR paying £8M for him last summer.
Leroy played 37 times for Norwich with 4 goals and 3 assists, and 31 times last season for QPR with 31 appearances, 6 goals and 4 assists.
He has played 11 times for Holland and was in the World Cup squad that finished third last summer in Brazil, along with Tim Krul and Daryl Janmaat, who was still at Feyenoord at the time
Here’s that great goal he scored against Newcastle when they beat us 2-1, and came from behind in the second last game of the season.
A good question is when are we going to sign a top center-back?
