Newcastle After Another Dutch International Midfielder

5:51 pm, Thursday, July 16th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 208 Comments  in Holland are reporting that Newcastle are interested in signing Dutch International Leroy Fer, and with QPR being relegated,  it seems that Fer will want to leave so he can make the Dutch squad for the Euro 2016 tournament in France next summer.

It seems that Newcastle have won the race to sign Charlie Austin from QPR and maybe they were also negotiating for Leroy Fer while they were talking to Chairman Tony Fernandes.

leroy fer agaisnt newcastle

Leroy Fer scoring against Newcastle

The former Feyenoord, FC Twente and Norwich central midfielder was acquired by QPR a year ago for £8M, after Norwich were relegated and that would be close to the fee Newcastle would presumably pay QPR for him – if this news is accurate.

The 6ft 2ins midfielder is a powerful player who can play attacking midfield in the center or out on the wing – so he would provide more attacking power for Newcastle.

Leroy would seem to be decent buy, having spent two full seasons in the Premier League, so he wouldn’t need any adjusting to the demands of English football.

Leroy also played under Steve McClaren’s second spell at FC Twente from 2012-2013.

He was signed by Norwich two years ago for just £4.5M, so in one year his value almost doubled,  with QPR paying £8M for him last summer.

Leroy played 37 times for Norwich with 4 goals and 3 assists,  and 31 times last season for QPR with 31 appearances, 6 goals and 4 assists.

He has played 11 times for Holland and was in the World Cup squad that finished third last summer in Brazil, along with Tim Krul and Daryl Janmaat, who was still at Feyenoord at the time

Here’s that great goal he scored against Newcastle when they beat us 2-1, and came from behind in the second last game of the season.

A good question is when are we going to sign a top center-back?

Comments welcome.

Pretty sure we were interested in him a few years back so i wouldn’t be surprised if this is true.

Fer is quality …. He’d be a great replacement for Tiote , but if we did get him it would probably be for Sissoko

Too many midfielders! Stop already. We need help in literally every other position on the field. I’m starting to get a little worried about our CB plight… Still no “done deals” on anyone for that..

It’s hotting up chaps hope we get some big news tomorrow Austin and mitrovic in and signed plus firm bids for cb’s in would be perfect for me fer is a good player I like him but the above is more important right now

  • 13 WWSBRD // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:07 PM

Muzzi Ozcan seems to be implying Austin to us is sorted but again who knows

  • 14 Jamseyd24 // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:09 PM

I think a few players will be leaving but for once we wont let them go until we get replacements. All this bull shit rumors about Austin are a hype job, he will be going to villa. hope I am wrong.

  • 15 toon kk // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:09 PM

Most of the players we’re linked to are just speculation and more speculation.
We’ll probably get one stiker and maybe one defender in this transfer window.
Our whole squad needs a revamp but that ain’t gonna happen.

Another midfielder in Fer? Excellent! Every well run club only signs midfielders. It’s a well know fact. Right out of The Book of Low Bids.

    Ashley Out!

  • 22 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:19 PM

Sissoko or tiote would probably end up leaving for Fer. Still no CBs. This is rediculous.

  • 23 Tsunki // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:20 PM

Yes is this the best idea the boys in the boardroom have had? Signing QPR players? Please don’t say we’re getting any of their defenders.

  • 24 why oh why // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:20 PM

According to his agent -The agent then later clarified who he believes Austin is joining by adding: “Newcastle – Charlie Austin.”. Ozcan then later deleted his tweet, but not before it was picked up by several fans.

The 26-year-old scored 18 goals in the Premier League for QPR last season, stepping up from the Championship, in which he had managed 17 goals the season prior, with ease.

Austin is now set to continue his Premier League adventure under former FC Twente boss McClaren at Newcastle and will be backed to fire the Magpies up the table.

He will also hope his chances of making England’s Euro 2016 squad will receive a boost with the switch.

  • 36 Jail for Ashley // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:28 PM

People are saying we have too many midfielders and I tend to agree. But thinking about it, we had a midfield that was so short of quality and numbers it allowed Sameobi, RTaylor and Gutti regular game time. All three have been released and loaned out, who are going to replace them. Wijnaldum, sure but who’s to say De Jong and Aarons will stay fit or Cabella will settle. The last thing we want to do before we start spending is sell Sissoko or Tiote.

  • 37 Polarboy // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:29 PM

@Tsunki. The same could have been said for Wijnaldum until it happened.

  • 38 Tsunki // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:29 PM

I think the problem is Carver used to be the Line Monitor and he’s taken the caretakers key bunch with him the fool. If we don’t get the line out of that cupboard in time…

  • 39 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:31 PM

My thoughts exactly we actually need more quality in midfield we should be looking to upgrade Tiote and Colback for the defensive mid positions if we really are serious about top 8 but I still feel we will get the bare minimum again

  • 40 Bobbybee // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:32 PM

Re centre backs. Stop panicking. Macca knows what we need and will recruit CB’s sooner rather than later, because he’s a top coach and can see where we need replacements. As hard as it is for some to accept, this is the start of a new era.

  • 41 Tsunki // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:32 PM

Actually it’s not a bad place to start, the old engine room. Time and again we’ve said that the pressure on the back four and the lack of service to our strikers is down to our woeful midfield, hence the tack of Willo hoofing it 70 yards upfield to himself on the back stick to knock it down for one of their pacy strikers to run straight onto our open goal….what was my point again? Oh yes crap midfield. Replace them all. Twice.

  • 42 Belfast // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:32 PM

This is the famous line Skunki. Two Sharks in the blue bit though.

  • 43 Tsunki // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:34 PM

Polar boy, I thought the same about the Berlin Wall until it eventually fell.

  • 44 Tsunki // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:35 PM

  • 45 JDdubai // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:36 PM

Cant see anyone leaving before their replacements are signed.

Still think we will only get 1 CB, with Colo, Saylor and Willo out of contract next season think we will get 1 now and 1 next summer, then hopefully wit a decent season in Lascelles that would be 3 CBs sorted.

    Austin or Mitrovic, not both.

    Shane Ferguson for captain..

  • 46 toon kk // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:36 PM

We have plenty of mid fielders which most are more suited to the championship along with most of our ddefenders. Even with new players a couple of injuries later we’ll be in the same boat as last season. Our regime will be hard to recover from.

  • 47 Polarboy // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:37 PM

@Tsunki. Yeah, anyway, point being we were linked with a good player in Wijnaldum for a long time and eventually signed him. It’s not that big of a leap to have faith we will sign a few more this window.

  • 48 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:38 PM

I know fans dont like this “sell before buy” thing, but for senior squad places, and HG quota, we will have no choice but to get rid of a senior player. Rather ot was goofy or Squidward, but its more likely to be a better more valuable player

  • 49 Tsunki // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:38 PM

Seriously though I think, as bobbybee says, SM already has his hit list. Easy to justify getting the brakes done when you’ve just bought new tyres. Spoiling the shop for a ha’porth ‘O tar and all that me hearties Yaaar

  • 50 JP...from The Rock // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:39 PM

I rate Fer but I much prefer we get Mitrovic and/or Austin and a couple of CBs first.

  • 51 WLtoon // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:39 PM

Not sure if you can read into this too much but PaddyPower have ceased betting on Charlie Austin.

  • 52 Tsunki // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:41 PM

Polar boy yeah anyway 2, I got your point but it doesn’t make it all any less drawn out does it? And one individual apple pie does not a picnic make. We have past experience to gauge from remember.

  • 53 Polarboy // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:41 PM

@WLtoon. You’re a bit late to the party mate, it’s moved on since then. All the bookies have suspended betting and there have been claims from a journo and agent on twitter that it’s a done deal.

  • 54 Tsunki // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:42 PM

I’ll be a bit disappointed if we land Charles and blow Mitosis off.

  • 55 Belfast // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:44 PM

Yep but it turns out that Journo isn’t actually a Journo though polar boy. The only thing he writes is the shopping list.

  • 56 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:46 PM

Okay lets get him in then :

    Austin – 15 million
    Banega 9 million
    Douglas – 2 million
    Veltman – 7 million
Lingard – Loan with option to buy
    Toney – 600k

  • 57 Polarboy // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:46 PM

@Tsunki. Our past behaviour would have suggested that we would have never went for a player of Wijnaldum’s price and profile. I don’t care if it’s drawn out as long as they are signed in time for the new season.

  • 58 dok - the horrid colonial // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:48 PM

    polar @ 56,

exactly, and in time to get some friendlies in, get sorted before we beat Southampton 🙂

  • 59 Novocastrian66 // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:48 PM

On outgoings, I reckon Cisse and Tiote will be leaving as long as our targets are signed. The more quality midfielders we have the better. With most sides packing the midfield and playing only one out and out striker, midfield is now more important than it has ever been. Weaknesses in midfield are quickly exposed. Bring them on.

  • 60 Bornandraised // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:49 PM

For those saying that signing Austin and Mitrovic means Cisse needs to go, simply not true. We just get rid of Obertan and Vuckic. I’d rather have 4 centre forwards than 9 attacking midfielders, especially if that means keeping Cisse over Obertan and Vuckic. Remember, we have extra squad depth at that position anyways with Aarons being under-21. I would even get rid of one more attacking midefielder (either Marveaux or Gouffran) and replace them with a proper fullback to make the squad more balanced. Any centre back that comes in is a one-for-one switch with Williamson and then Taylor/Dummett leaving.

  • 61 Ron Knee // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:49 PM

England getting hammered in the 2nd Test. Is that an omen?

  • 62 Tsunki // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:49 PM

Polar boy well…yeah. I suppose that’s what I’m saying too. But with a hint of caution, and a dash of pessimism.

  • 63 Belfast // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:49 PM

See you get the clever clogs out there who see betting suspended at Sky Bet on Charlie Austin. So they go to Paddy Power and others thinking yep I’ll have a tenner on that it’s a cert and betting gets suspended at that bookmaker too.

I had heard a very similar story to Malackay a few articles back about how little money it took to alter the betting odds.

  • 64 Polarboy // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:49 PM

@Belfast. That’s as may be but this agent at least is legit. As always there’s not much point in debating the minutiae until we see him with the shirt.

  • 65 Rotonda heights // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:53 PM

  • 67 Tsunki // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:54 PM

That would be minutæ. Minutæ. Looks good like that doesn’t it?

  • 68 check the toastie // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:56 PM

Its all fine and well saying we have plenty of midfielders but all lack quality, regards Colback, Anita, Tiote, all lack in lots of areas, midfield is the key to all teams everything is built from there.

Fer is excellent and is an improvement on both Anita and Colback. Hope we get him, gives us some physicality and extra pace in the middle of the park that Anita and colback sadly lack.

Both Anita and Colback cover full back positions and midfield when injuries occur, good situation to be in.
If we sign Mitrovic and a quick physical CB, then its been great.

  • 69 The Newcastle Armchair // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:56 PM

I also got duped by the betting companies on Dyche to Sunderland. Was a definite until the advocate of dicks came out of retirement

  • 70 Bornandraised // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:56 PM

With Austin, we are at nine HG players, even assuming Ferguson, Alnwick, Vuckic, Good, and Bigirimani are not on the roster. A foreign CB coming in for Williamson would bring us down to eight, so we could still get rid of one of Taylor/Dummett/Lascelles and be fine. In that way, the move for Darlow and Lascelles was actually quite clever.

  • 71 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:57 PM

Mitrovic is not happening now imo (would like to be wrong) so i hope we go after another similarly skilled youngish forward as well as Austin. But first i want CBs.

I am totally in the dark here….
Betting sites are not accurate, can suggest news but as soon as there is any chance the bookies are going to lose money the ALL close shop – might of happened here.
Austin ain’t said anything, our club NEVER say anything and we have a twitter agent makes comment and deletes.
Then you hear we are still in for mitrovic. ….We won’t sign two strikers and the Austin rumour might be to push his Daddy into action instead of him looking for a living off his son ( only my thoughts)
Take into the mix Fer as another midfielder AND still no concrete bids for any of our main needs (2xCB’s).
We have been linked with 101 names, signed one.
Released/sold none of our deadwood. …
Time is ticking by, oh why do I hear this nagging voice (Kinnear’s mixed with a bit of Mick Quinn)

  • 91 Bornandraised // Jul 16, 2015 at 7:09 PM

Tsunki, that makes sense though. You’ve got to have HG players somewhere, and the ones that play attacking positions cost a fortune. Better to try them as backup defenders and goalies and hope that they do ok. Of our 14 HG players over the age of 21, 10 of them play goalkeeper or defense.

  • 92 DevonToon // Jul 16, 2015 at 7:12 PM

Charlie Austin… 4th top scorer in the prem last year, in that joke QPR team… anyone who says he’s not good enough for us, doesn’t watch football. Those who say he’s just a poacher, clearly doesn’t watch football, he scores all sorts of goals… He’s not good enough for the top top teams but he’d walk into any team bar the “big 6” Will be over the moon if this is true. Quality, prem proven striker.

Only saw mitrovic play in the champions league and he looked very impressive… His international record is pants but to be fair Serbia ain’t a team, just a squad of decent players… so maybe the lack of team cohesion is his problem internationally?

Would love Abdennour at the toon, real classy defender… Its gone very quiet on him, well at least iv not seen anything regarding him anywhere… so maybe he can be persuaded if we keep buying correctly

I suck at playing football, so only ever played it in fun. I am a prime example of an Armchair Fan.

Played Rugby for an amateur club, but still just a hobby really, even though I loved and miss it.

Played Cricket in a few league games over the years, and have career bowling figures of 2 overs, no maidens, approx 15 runs, and 1 wicket.

Does that count as sport? 😉

  • 126 BandB // Jul 16, 2015 at 7:45 PM

Until the end of the seventies, the backstreets, school fields and parks of every dog-end town and village would full of kids playing cricket in the summer. Really rough kids, some of them brilliant.

Now the only kids you see playing cricket are usually Asian, and grade A sports for white kids are ones that adapts well to being played with the thumbs while scooping pizza.

  • 128 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 16, 2015 at 7:51 PM

It looks like you have had an unlucky experience with the bell-ends who played rugby, there is a lot less of that now. We are a smaller sport than football in this country,so the seemingly anti-ball banter (thats all it is really) is us standing up for ourselves.

If you find cricket boring, thats fair enough. I find golf mind numbingly boring. I do accept thought that others like it, and if they have the inclination and money to learn it, then it can’t be sh1te, even if that is my private oppinion of it 😉

  • 133 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jul 16, 2015 at 7:55 PM

When Gouffran first signed for us he was excellent at the start !!

Him and Sissoko breezed their debut versus Villa , destroyed Chelsea and Southampton and then Kyle Walker took Gouffran out against Spurs with a nasty tackle (which was not even punished) shortly after Gouffy had scored he sort of struggled when he came back that season

The season after when we went 451 with him as the left forward with Cabaye , Anita , Tiote and Sissoko as the rest of the midfield he was great scoring in 4 home games in a row and then his chum Cabaye got sold and since then he has not looked interested

Could be a useful squad player but probably does not want to be here anymore

  • 134 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 16, 2015 at 7:56 PM

    G 175

A tough question…. i thought he would be an unexpected hero for us last season, but he utterly failed to take his chance. He should have also been given a few games up front when we had injury problems (he played there in france). I am not sure if i want him to have another chance. If he fails again he will just be clogging up a squad place

  • 135 kevymartins // Jul 16, 2015 at 7:56 PM

On Gouffran how much did he cost ? 500k ? Fair to say we have had a decent return from him for that especially if we could sell him for say 1 or 2 million

  • 137 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 16, 2015 at 8:02 PM

Pitch and put. For some reason i can do that bit reasonably well (or i could), but, for whatever reason, i just can’t get enthusiastic about it. I turn over if it comes on telly, with the exception of the last hour of the ryder cup. I like watching USA lose at stuff (looks at Dok).

Also, with all the claims of poshness in Rugby and cricket, i don’t think golf should get a free ride, as i have heard many accounts of snobbery at many clubs. Like i say, all sports have their elitist dickish entities.

He played in my youth league and it seemed the whole league thought he was a god and was afraid to tackle him because he was scouted by teams. Only red card I got was when he scored a hat-trick vs us then had the ball again and as a striker it actually took a lot of effort because I had to chase him around a lil bit before I finally got him. I think that it isn’t definite that Mitrovic is Porto bound and that he was really waiting to see the offer when it finally came from them. It’s the best thing to do with a major life decision to hear all the offers.

And there are good things for both options for him, we have higher wages and the Premier League but Porto have irregular Champions League and a good pedigree of sending players to bigger and better things. We will see how he decides.

According to this Balotelli has only scored 21 goals in his whole career!!

Austin is a much better goal scorer without the baggage

Ideally who would you like us to sign for striker?

The fact that Ste Taylor cannot be assed to get himself fit for preseason is reason enough to get rid, thinks he’s employed by a holiday camp obviously, he’s an expensively overpaid athlete, and doesn’t give a foook..

Get Rid of the balloon. God knows how much he has been paid for decent minutes played over the last three years. Drain on club resource.

    Saylor OOT.
    Willo OOT

It’ll be down to Anderlecht accepting the best bid for them and Mitty’s Dad approving the terms of the contract. Could go either way. Toon still not out of it.

Either way, his hopes for his career will not suffer much anyway – if he’s that good one of the last 8 CL clubs will come in for him within 2 years.
