If Newcastle Sign Austin – It’s Great News For Fans And Club

4:36 pm, Friday, July 17th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 71 Comments

It looks like Rob Lee has said in his Kicca column today what a lot of Newcastle fans are thinking – if we can sign Charlie Austin with a number of clubs after him, that will be terrific news for the Newcastle fans and the club itself.

From what we know of Charlie he would be great at Newcastle, and the 26 year-old would quickly become a Newcastle favorite as he puts those goals in for us.

Charlie Austin England +Training+Session+HB5qJEpagHBl

Charlie Austin with the England squad in June

Yesterday things lit up at Newcastle around 3:00pm Newcastle time when the betting on Charlie moving to Newcastle was suspended by a number of betting shops when he was listed at 1/10 odds-on to sign for Newcastle.

When there’s news like that it’s hard to get the articles out and I messed up that first article if you are wondering what happened to it.

This is what Rob has written in Kicca:

“If Charlie Austin has signed for Newcastle that is great, great news for the fans and the club.”

“It shows real intent from the club and shows they are prepared to spend big and compete in the transfer market.”

“A lot of clubs were after Austin so it is great if he has chosen to go to Newcastle United.”

“Austin is British and he has shown he can score in the Premier League. That is just the kind of player the club needs.”

“He would be the second signing within a week I just hope there are three or more players on the horizon.”

“My message to the club is simple…..great signings but don’t stop now.”

We agree with Rob – Newcastle should keep going and sign more good players – we have plenty of money to spend.

Rob was at Newcastle for ten years from 1992 and he played 285 games for us with 33 goals and 3 assists.

It’s going to be an exciting time for Newcastle fans if and when we can get this lad through the door – the sooner the better.

Comments welcome.

centre back required if not two

  • 2 Whumpie // Jul 17, 2015 at 4:41 PM

No disrespect to Austin or Wijnaldum, but we are a LONG way from ‘great news’ yet and I remain massively suspicious. So far this feels very much like “just enough” to get fans to buy tickets, but with no intention of letting us get above 8th.
I’ve love to see Austin in; we need someone just like him, and with Sissoko, Aarons, Wijnaldum and SDJ feeding him he’ll beat last year’s 15-goal total.
But at present our back line will let in three for every one he scores.
We need, above all else, a Colo replacement, along with a Willo replacement and backup for LB and RB. Those are still the priority, followed by strikers and then midfielders. I just hope that recruiting in reverse order is just the way things have landed and not some daft misinterpretation of what’s needed.

Graham Carr was at Charlton on Wednesday to take in their game against Genk and watch Kara Mbodj.

Charlton isn’t a million miles from QPR

    mmmmmm ???

When he’s on the steps of SJP, wearing the Black & White stripes, I’ll believe it.

  • 5 Jib // Jul 17, 2015 at 4:43 PM

Whoops the match was in Genk

Genk aint a million miles from Anderlecht

  • 6 Graeme // Jul 17, 2015 at 4:45 PM

Whumpie @ 2 – How about we get a proper LB in place before we look for a “Back-up”!!
We have a RB, we dont have a recognised LB and we have needed one since Santon was shipped out.

    I’ll disagree with Rob Lee

Signing Austin doesn’t look like intent it looks like we signed a second rate and our second choice striker to me.

  • 14 ilovetoon8788 // Jul 17, 2015 at 4:53 PM

We will struggle badly in the league if sign other players instead of a quality centre back.

Ben Davies can’t get in the Spurs side due to Danny Roses form, he’d be a decent shout for a new left back.

I like Haidara but just think the injuries will keep returning and he won’t reach his potential because of it.

So my updated wishlist in order of priority.

    Ben Davies
    Mbemba/Van Dijk/Veltman

Graeme – you’re right. I do think Dummett may make the cut at LB but we seriously need a top-rate body in there.

But Optimistic Prime @ 13 – what are you basing that on? In case you hadn’t noticed, last season he very nearly outscored all our strikers put together. If he’s “second rate” where to you put Cisse and Perez?

We need someone better than Haidara at left back. Someone who can perform like Enrique or Bernard at their best. I prefer to see Dummett at CB. Carr is not delivering with astute signings.

  • 26 GeordieTwo // Jul 17, 2015 at 5:11 PM

Top clubs have a mix of experience and youth. Youth alone can never work. We don’t have the proper mix to win anything and never will with Mike. We sell good players too soon so that Mike gets maximum profit. The loss of Cabaye was a killer for us for example. Mike is a failed experiment in ownership.

I base that on watching him play in a team set up for him and the type of goals he scored, he’s no better than Cisse who everyone seems happy to offload. Cisse is the better finisher.

Massively overated and no improvement on what we have, there’s a very long list of players who’ve had one good season.

Have you noticed the lack of teams after him? If he was such a hot property there’d be a cue around the block.

  • 30 Novocastrian66 // Jul 17, 2015 at 5:15 PM

Cannot see Dummett making it as a full back. He is too slow and ponderous in possession. We need more options in both fullback positions and obviously in the centre of defence.

  • 31 GeordieTwo // Jul 17, 2015 at 5:16 PM

A club with our reputation of no ambition and an unknowledgeable owner, paired with poor management (Llambias, Kinnear, Charnley) is a definite deal killer in many cases. We are now famous for low bids and lack of competitiveness. We will never win anything with Ashley as owner. Take that one to the bank.

  • 32 GeordieTwo // Jul 17, 2015 at 5:18 PM

We’re an almost complete disaster at the back. Krul can’t distribute the ball (his kicking is woeful), Colo is past it, Willo never had it, Dummett is a Championship level fullback at best, and poor old Janmaat must dread the start of the new season with the load of bollocks he has to play with in defense. But we will continue to bring in midfielders no doubt.

  • 33 swemag // Jul 17, 2015 at 5:19 PM

    Optimistic prime,

don’t know too much about Austin, but agree with your views on Cisse. He is a top class finisher and it now seems he is injury free and hopefully learned a few things from last year about what not to do on a football pitch.

I would like to see 38 games from Cisse this season and play Ayoze on one of the wings in an attacking role. Ayoze has class and knows how to take on a man.

  • 34 Novocastrian66 // Jul 17, 2015 at 5:19 PM

Villa are having a bad window. Not sure who they have signed and they’re losing their best players.

  • 35 Whumpie // Jul 17, 2015 at 5:21 PM

Optimistic Prime, I’m sorry to disappoint but I have to give in to you having clearly paid more attention than me. If a lot of those goals were pens and tap-ins then the figures mean a lot less.
I’d still want him signed, but I get what you’re saying now.

  • 36 hibbit // Jul 17, 2015 at 5:26 PM

novo……. we all know what we need across the back how the club can’t see it……. talk of 2 cf a full team for mf but talk about the back4 NONE

  • 38 optimistic prime // Jul 17, 2015 at 5:28 PM

    Swe mag

I still rate Cisse, he’s the player that’s suffered most under the coaching and team selection.

Putting him on the wing was a joke, he ends up off side as much due to the ridicoudly slow passing and through balls to him. He flourished off first time quick balls and we’ve been playing one step foward two back.

Except his half season we finished 5th he’s rarely been deployed in his best position with the team playing to his strengths.

I’d go for Mitrovich and keep Cisse.

  • 39 GeordieTwo // Jul 17, 2015 at 5:29 PM

Colo is past it and could never handle high balls. Experience only helps if the player can still play at a high enough level. Krul is a poor distributor of the ball and always has been. He isn’t being challenged enough for his position. Willo was never a Prem level player. He should have been moved on a couple of seasons ago along with sick note Saylor. Gouffran has lost all confidence and looked worse with each time on the pitch for us last season. These are not the experienced players that will lift us when the young have their problems. We sit on older players because Mike won’t spend, not because they are still effective.

  • 40 GeordieTwo // Jul 17, 2015 at 5:31 PM

Cisse can be an absolute flake at times. I’ve seen him shoot on goal and end up giving away a throw in many times. His ball control can be atrocious. Never seen a more inconsistent player. You can’t build an attack around that. If we don’t get a decent striker, 2 CB’s, a good winger, and at least 1 fullback in we’ll struggle again this season. I see no change in the basic method being used at the club. Charnley is hopeless.

  • 41 optimistic prime // Jul 17, 2015 at 5:31 PM

A lot of his goals came from scrapping in the box and his overall play is poor IMO.

In a established prem team he’d be second choice not the main man, he’d only be main man in the lower level teams which we are aspiring not to be.

  • 42 ilovetoon8788 // Jul 17, 2015 at 5:32 PM

Yes. I can’t understand those who slate Cisse. We were piss poor under pardew and yet his goals kept us up and saved pardew countless times.

In a piss poor team and coaching staff he was good. With better players around him he’ll definitely shine. I rate him very highly. Still one of the best poachers in the league.

  • 43 Novocastrian66 // Jul 17, 2015 at 5:33 PM

Aye Hibbit there are a lot of issues left unresolved with three weeks to the start of the season. We have made little progress.

  • 45 bettyswallocks // Jul 17, 2015 at 5:34 PM

This Mitravic is the real deal. His timing when he strikes the ball or heads it is spot on.
He oozes confidence and class. So so hope we get him.

Anyone know the betting odds for him to come to us. Can’t find anything on odds checker.

  • 46 lesh // Jul 17, 2015 at 5:34 PM

If we have signed Austin, maybe Charnley’s trying to find a ‘preferred media partner’ to break the news!

    But then again…….

  • 47 GeordieTwo // Jul 17, 2015 at 5:36 PM

Good discussion today. Lots of well thought out comments. Ashley and Charnley are still hopeless and always will be. Schteve has no chance of making us a contender for anything except mediocre. But then again that’s all Ashley ever wanted for us.

  • 48 Jamseyd24 // Jul 17, 2015 at 5:37 PM

Does anyone think Evans would be worth a punt?????

  • 49 Offkey // Jul 17, 2015 at 5:38 PM

preferred media partner says Porto have matched our offer and that we wont pay 15 million for Austin

  • 50 Novocastrian66 // Jul 17, 2015 at 5:38 PM

G2. Cisse is an impact player and a spontaneous finisher. McClaren has said he is impressed with his link up play in training perhaps he has been working on improving his all round game. Doubt his knee will carry him through a season. I Think we will see him on the bench if he stays.

  • 51 kevymartins // Jul 17, 2015 at 5:39 PM

Please watch this was him this season ..

Charlie Austin scored headers/volleys from inside/outside the box top corner finesses bottom corner finesses a back heel and the last goal on that video just oozes class the touch the agility the finish. What is people on about saying is goals were average and pens an all? sure he is sorta like Cisse but younger and Cisse wants to leave anyhow.

  • 52 Rotonda heights // Jul 17, 2015 at 5:41 PM

    strange headline ed.

if austin signs it means our number 1 target has got away. Mind you i suppose he’s second on the list as opposed to the usual 5th / 6th choice we normally end up with!

  • 53 optimistic prime // Jul 17, 2015 at 5:42 PM

Qpr were set up as a attacking team Austin got plenty of chances that he missed. Austin wouldn’t have got double figures playing for us.

I’d rather keep Cisse than beg

  • 54 Rotonda heights // Jul 17, 2015 at 5:43 PM

No, he’s very error prone, hence LVG wanting rid.

  • 55 Novocastrian66 // Jul 17, 2015 at 5:43 PM

The only punt I would take with Jonny Evans would be a punt up his arse. He rubbish and he wouldn’t be cheap, he’ll be on good money at Man Utd and would want the same, if not a rise to move on.

  • 56 mickalfas // Jul 17, 2015 at 5:48 PM

Why is Mitrovic our No1 target ?
Cheaper with more sell on value!
    It’s the Ashley way

  • 57 GeordieTwo // Jul 17, 2015 at 5:48 PM

Don’t think I’ll change my opinion of Cisse Novo mate. The most inconsistent striker I’ve ever seen. At times he looks like he has never seen a football before. He can finish now and then but his goals per game for us is only average (34 in 96 I believe). I agree he still has a role as a sub who can provide a late goal or two. Woe betide us if we don’t sign a top striker and 2 top CB’s. 15th might look good at the end of the coming season unless Charnley gets off his fat backside.

  • 58 optimistic prime // Jul 17, 2015 at 5:49 PM

I hope our scouts aren’t judging him on a youtube vid

  • 59 GeordieTwo // Jul 17, 2015 at 5:49 PM

Spot on mickalfas @56. We would sell him on by the time he was 24. Useless way to do things. Ashley has had 8 years and all we get is another pile of bollocks in his interview. The man just can’t stop himself from lying.

  • 60 kevymartins // Jul 17, 2015 at 5:50 PM

@ OP Austin missed chances last season. Lol when have you ever seen Cisse score 18 goals in the league? I don’t even think he hit 15 in his best he is around about 10 goal a season average.

  • 61 kevymartins // Jul 17, 2015 at 5:53 PM

@OP obviously not that’s just a high light to show people he wasn’t scoring “tap ins an pens”.

  • 62 GeordieTwo // Jul 17, 2015 at 5:54 PM

    Spot on Novo @55.

  • 63 WLtoon // Jul 17, 2015 at 5:54 PM

Ive heard that Chelski are sniffing around Mitrovic,so we might aswell forget him.
TBH, i dont think he wants to come here,if he did it would of been sorted long before now, whether its CL he wants or more money.
If chelsea are interested, lets see how long it takes for them to get him over their line.
My guess is it will take no more than a few days.

  • 64 BandB // Jul 17, 2015 at 5:59 PM

I don’t understand this story, as reported by the Mirror.

We are having problems signing a striker we need but can’t get across the line, and then entangle an already complicate situation by making signing the central defender we also desperately need contingent on the success of getting in the striker who doesn’t want to come.

It looks like a negotiating position designed to fail.

  • 65 hibbit // Jul 17, 2015 at 6:00 PM

op we are begging though we can not get players over the line we wont pay the going rate we start at target 1 and if we are lucky we get target 21 ……..i never even thought of cisse but the chances rivi had and never put away austin would have nailed most of them

  • 66 mickalfas // Jul 17, 2015 at 6:01 PM

If Cisse is injured,it fills me with dread to think that Riviere/Goofy are the replacements on the bench
It’s not a problem though as we have Willo/Collo to stop the flood of goals against
I despair with the speed of the transfers,if there’s one club that should be way out in front buying people ,its us ffs
    Penfold/Arseley out !

  • 67 bettyswallocks // Jul 17, 2015 at 6:01 PM

There is no point comparing Austin to Mitrovic. Austin is a solid enough CF who knows where the goal is. He is OK but not in the same league as Mitrovic who at 20 shows all the signs of becoming World Class.

Any judge of a footballer should be able to see the difference in poise on the ball and the technique when passing and shooting.

  • 68 mickalfas // Jul 17, 2015 at 6:07 PM

It’s exactly how they plan it ,go for people who are too good for us ,and put in stupid offers knowing they’ll be turned down
And as I posted earlier ,the line is 10ft high ,razor wire and electrified
The line is impossible to cross

  • 69 hibbit // Jul 17, 2015 at 6:09 PM

betty got to agree with you about the two players but wont come so why do we rule austin out because he wont come austin would do a good job for us maybe not as good as mits but a still good job

  • 70 nufc 11 // Jul 17, 2015 at 6:29 PM

I’d take Austin any day over the rest we need British steel throughout the squad which we don’t have at the moment also love to see Michael Dawson brought in a great leader and organiser of back four these are the type we need a great crosser of the ball too Matty Phillips be my shout cheap imports are not always the answer.
