Newcastle Tracking Versatile International Center-Back

4:13 pm, Friday, July 17th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 14 Comments

Newcastle at some point this summer need to bring in at least one center-half to shore up the defense, which has let in 190 goals in the last three Premier League seasons, and one of the defenders we have been linked with this year is Genk center-back Kara Mbodji, who can also play as a defensive midfielder.

6 ft 4ins tall Mbodji joined Genk at the end of 2012 from Norwegian club Tromsø for £1.4M, and it would seem he would be a decent buy for £5M since he can play in two positions that Newcastle need to fill – if Cheick Tiote is sold this summer.

Newcastle have been watching Kara this year and there seems to be lots of interest in the 15 times capped Senegal International.

Kara was in the Senegal 2012 Olympic squad and in the squad earlier this year at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

Mark McKay is his agent, and has said there is a lot on interest in his client:

“There is plenty of interest in Kara – he’s big, powerful but composed too.” “He’d be an asset to any Premier League side and he’s keen to test himself in England.”

Other Premier League clubs said to be interested are Everton and West Ham.

While at Tromso he played 89 games with 6 goals and 2 assists and since he’s been at Genk he’s shown some very good form and made 83 appearances with 10 goals and 2 assists.

His contract has another three years to run in Belgium, and it seems that for £5M Kara Mbodji would be an excellent buy for Newcastle.

This lad can also score goals and here’s a corker he scored against Anderlecht last season – sign him up!

Comments welcome.

Are we now only scouting the Netherlands?

Might be a gem of a player but want an accomplished CB in, somebody with Prem experience or some good international / european experience. Its been too long since we bought a ready made first team CB

I know…I have a habit of thinking of Belgium and Holland as the Netherlands. It’s the Low Countries , isn’t it?

    BandB – good save

I had friend who lived there and she was very Dutch.
I made a mistake. I admit it freely.
I maybe should have Googled it before I blurted it out.

@BandB. Belgium hasn’t been a part of the Netherlands since 1830, showing your age mate 😉

Desperately need a quality centre back but not from africa

  • 11 Polarboy // Jul 17, 2015 at 4:36 PM

I would rather we didn’t sign two player who qualify for African nations, if the rumours are to be believed about this guy and the Anderlecht defender. Although to be fair there isn’t an ACON until 2017 and Congo haven’t exactly excelled recently.

We need a CB more than any other position so make a bid for the guy.
While im here, it seems to be a written that Austin is our player, i cant remember any article or news bulletin saying that we had signed him.
I would,nt be surprised if someone comes in for him ,offers better wages and signs him up under our noses,
Honestly, all this pussyfooting around makes it so frustrating .

More links zero action the squad needs quality reinforcements at centre half and up front..what are penfold and co doing? Watching repeats of only fools and horses while looking up five star names on champ manager? Make some signings to give us half a chance of remaining lower half you glorified tea boy…even my MOTHER knows our squad isnt good enough FFS
