So did people enjoy the game last night?

…still on vacation so are not going to watch it!

Any news on the transfer front?

  • 2 Tsunki // Jul 19, 2015 at 7:17 AM

    Ashley Out!

  • 3 Bambams // Jul 19, 2015 at 7:21 AM

I got up early and just watched it on YouTube
It was nice to see us keep the ball.
Colback did well, Aarons great when he came on Haidara sent off which should never have happened. Bit toothless up front Perez unlucky after Aarons stripped three down the left.
Janmaat played well as did the two keepers.
It’s a win against a team that beat the makems. ….

  • 4 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jul 19, 2015 at 7:26 AM

Bambams…would love to see someone else up front than Cisse and someone with an end product replacing Obertan!

    Would be a start 🙂

Then a new central defense will help us in the build up game…it’s just moving ridiculous slow on the transfer front.

The US tour is over before players are signing with is just unprof. of the club.

  • 5 JDdubai // Jul 19, 2015 at 7:32 AM

We passed it about nicely without generally looking liekly to cut right through them.

Nice to see when Krul has the ball, the CBs split and Anita drops in to collect and start the play – would panic if Tiote was in that role though with his back to goal and zero awareness.

If we keep our team relatively fit, or at least in line with the other teams then I think with Mitrovic and a CB we will be looking alright.

I would love us to try for shaqiri though, 12m was accepted I think, why not offer them Sissoko and cash and the only excess would be the difference between his and sissoko’s wages.

Plus it gets Sissoko off our books, tired of his desperate whoring himself out to anyone that will listen. Nice to see he has quietened down after no-one followed up his pleading to sign for anyone else!

I agree. Aarons stood out for me. And some nice touches from GW.

  • 8 ilovetoon8788 // Jul 19, 2015 at 7:36 AM

Aarons is very exciting for me. Very direct and already looks pure class on the wings.

    Reminds me of David Ginola.

  • 9 Bambams // Jul 19, 2015 at 7:40 AM

Totally agree. I feel Cisse is a half chance finisher. Not a target man or someone who has loads of pace who will run the channels. If he was alongside a Shearer or Les type he would feed well of knock downs.
I hope Mitrovic comes in and in time Perez with him alongside should cause problems

As for CB’S. ….They MUST have something sorted and ate just busy finalising our front line first.
Van Dijk, Mbemba, Amen….All massive improvement
    Here’s hoping

  • 10 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jul 19, 2015 at 7:41 AM

JDdubai…I would love to see McClaren trying a 4-3-3 and not this 4-2-3-1 nonsense.

    …it hasn’t worked before and I don’t think it’ll work now

  • 11 Bambams // Jul 19, 2015 at 7:43 AM

    Amen = Aymen (predictive text!)

  • 12 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jul 19, 2015 at 7:43 AM

Bambams…maybe Charmless doing deals is not adequate?

  • 13 expatmag // Jul 19, 2015 at 7:44 AM

    Totally agree about formation

433 should be the way to go

  • 14 JDdubai // Jul 19, 2015 at 7:48 AM

I always see it as the same formation, the only real difference is the position of the 10/SDJ in it, more advanced in 4231.

Otherwise 1 main CF, 2 wider attackers – these can be in 433 or 4231.

The biggest issue we have with both these formations is that it reduces the number of targets in the box. When Aarons has the ball then the RW should be busting a gut to get in alongside the CF, and vice versa. This rarely happens, definitely didnt last season and one of the reasons why we only have 1 to aim for most times.

Hopefully this season we have Wijnaldum and SDJ also in and around the box and think Perez playing RW would have more desire to get into the box to get a goal than Sissoko ever will.

  • 15 Bambams // Jul 19, 2015 at 7:49 AM

If we are aiming to sign Mitrovic and I am no football manager but he thrives on cut back crosses very similar to big Al ( no I am not suggesting new shearer ). We have Aarons who could do a job but have we been linked with a fleet footed right winger other than Andros Townsend ?
Is he going to play socks there ?
If we are going to sign a proven aerial threat in Mitrovic then we need the supply line also.

I don’t think we can pick what our team will be next year, I think he will pick different formations and personnel for each opposition.

Austin rumours seem to have quietened ?

  • 16 Belfast // Jul 19, 2015 at 7:52 AM

    *Pre game*
    July 18, 2015
Ok will 1-0 but the goal is an og

    Am I physic or what?

  • 17 Bambams // Jul 19, 2015 at 7:52 AM

The one thing that really got to me last year was how few we had in the opposition box when attacking.
This is backed up by not having one penalty awarded to us.

No wonder we couldn’t win a game

  • 18 the broons // Jul 19, 2015 at 7:55 AM

Make no doubt about it, Newcastle were still going through the motions for the large part of that game however few players to pick out on both sides of the spectrum.

Janmaat- seems to be very adapt at the possession game aswell as just getting forward, got a real gem of a right back here lads.
Haidaira- Despite his dubious sending off in a friendly game! his whipped balls into the box are so dangerous, he has to be first choice left back them crosses onto mitrovics head could be a real good recipe for success.
Aarons- Yet again came on and looked like our best player, him and haidaira down the left is sorted just preferrably need someone to partner janmaat down the other side.

Williamson- may seem like am picking on him especially since we kept a clean sheet however mcclaren must see that any chance of us playing football from the back must not include him in the team.

Cisse- Like I said a lot of players were going through the motions and you could tell cisse wasn’t really trying his utmost to get his goal today (actually being rather lazy)
However his first touch and passing potential is something else i think might struggle to fit in this new “style of play”

The other players mentioned were at mainly 6’s apart from the keepers did well for their account.

  • 19 Dublin Toon Army // Jul 19, 2015 at 7:56 AM

Williamson is a stocking…. What number was gini wearing?

  • 20 Altamullan // Jul 19, 2015 at 8:00 AM

Is it me? Is it sleep deprivation? Or do others feel exceptionally happy? Even though we’ve just beaten a third tier US side, via the aid of an OG, I saw real flashes of something to look forward to: “…I danced a jig, and I swung me twig, the day I went to Blaydon. Oh me lads…”

  • 21 Altamullan // Jul 19, 2015 at 8:02 AM

    No. 5 for wor ‘Wij-aye-man’

  • 22 hibbit // Jul 19, 2015 at 8:03 AM

just wish we could get the back 4 sorted we need cover for the 2 full backs we need 2 first choice cb we have cover if we get the back 4 playing as unit on the same wavelength it will help to sort a lot of our other problems out

  • 23 nut meg // Jul 19, 2015 at 8:07 AM

A very decent workout that takes us further along the road to fitness and understanding of how SM wants to play the game.I don’t want to be critical but I just can’t see Sissoko in the starting 11, a top winger would be a huge improvement.

  • 24 Tsunki // Jul 19, 2015 at 8:10 AM

OK it may be me but I’m getting sick of this ‘new’ bobbybee character coming in and lecturing nobody in particular to stop whining about the past and embrace the ‘new culture’. Fair enough he’s a better fan than all of us put together. And we don’t understand the game, the club history and the Geordie culture in any way like he does, but his patronising guff is starting to grind my gears.

How about this – for all you real fans embracing the new culture, it’s early days, it’s nice that we’ve signed one and are still possibly getting a couple more, and the emails are nice and videos are lovely but just be a little cautious this is still Ashleys business and we’ve won two games against mediocre opposition, one pen, one of. Common Sense, not misplaced romanticism.

  • 25 Tsunki // Jul 19, 2015 at 8:12 AM

    One OG that was.

Not being defeatist, just realist. Results matter in the end, we’re still waiting for them remember.

  • 26 Bambams // Jul 19, 2015 at 8:15 AM

According to Steve Mac Mitrovic won’t be signed in time for Portland match.

  • 27 Tsunki // Jul 19, 2015 at 8:21 AM

    Hail the prophet belfast!

  • 28 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jul 19, 2015 at 8:33 AM

JDdubai…I get your point about formations but they are as different ad 3-5-2 are from 5-3-2 😉

  • 29 AmericanMagpie // Jul 19, 2015 at 8:34 AM

Sacramento is known for their Yellow Billed Magpies. When Sacramento had fans vote for their team name a couple years ago, Magpies was one of the options. Obviously that one wasn’t the most popular.

  • 30 deeps // Jul 19, 2015 at 8:34 AM

Foot Mercato say Anderlecht want €10m for Chancel Mbemba & that while Atletico Madrid were ahead, Newcastle could close a deal in 48 hours.

  • 31 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jul 19, 2015 at 8:35 AM

Expat…I had been told 4-3-3 was McClaren’s prefered formation so I am still waiting to see that!

  • 32 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jul 19, 2015 at 8:37 AM

Bambams…you gotta wonder what’s so difficult in closing these deals for Newcastle!

    …I suppose it’s always difficult if you don’t know what you’re doing…

  • 33 check the toastie // Jul 19, 2015 at 8:40 AM

Cisse is living on borrowed time, he continually gives the ball away, it won’t be tolerated and he will be sold.

Wouldn’t be surprised if he goes shortly.

  • 34 JDdubai // Jul 19, 2015 at 8:41 AM

It comes down to philosophy and tactics, even 532 can be attacking if used a certain way.

For me 4231 and 433 are the same, just depends what instructions are given to certain players(wide players and the no10) – whatever we go with we need to get more players than just the CF desperate to get a goal.

Its like Rob Lee, or Lampard, they were desperate to score every match and were always in the box sniffing for a goal – we dont/didnt have enough players with that desire to score and so when the crosses went in most players were on the edge of the box rather than in the mix.

With 2 attacking fullbacks it should allow the wide players to cut inside more and get closer to the CF you would think and have Janmaat and Haidara keeping the width and crossing – plus hopefully this year we have SDJ and Wijnaldum who will chip in with a few.

The question’s got to be asked?

Why yet more delay to actually signing Mitrovic?

It strikes me that the lad doesn’t really want to come to SJP.

His Facebook post never used words that expressed his delight to be joining us and that worries me – especially as he ain’t showed up in Newcastle yet – or has he/

  • 39 Jail for Ashley // Jul 19, 2015 at 8:55 AM

Seen the talk on Europa league last night and I think it should be formatted the other way. The group winners of the EL should go into the CL not vice versa.
As for Cisses signing being a push for a CL spot, I too was excited by the signing but with added hindsight it was nothing to do with a CL push, it was simply because he was 8M cheaper than his valuation 6 months previously. Had a genuine effort been made to push on a CB would have been signed as well. Had Willo or Collo been injured or suspended from January to May Simpson or Santon would have been played at CB and we wouldn’t have been anywhere near fifth despite Cisses wonder goals.

  • 40 Tsunki // Jul 19, 2015 at 8:55 AM

It is eerily mysterious though .

  • 42 Belfast // Jul 19, 2015 at 8:58 AM

They mustn’t have got the new era memo.

  • 43 GEORDIE69 // Jul 19, 2015 at 8:59 AM

I am kackered after stopping up to watch that..Positives for me we’re Janmaat, Aarons and our attempted style of football. Negatives we’re Williamson, Sissoko, Orbetan and Cisse. Lack of fitness is worrying for De Jong also., needs to step up quickly. Aarons has to be one of our first names on the team sheet. McLaren knows we need to work on our pressing and how to win the ball back which is a problem. I have faith in McLaren and his team as coaches, his management skills have not been tested yet. In wards and upwards.

  • 44 cestriasteve // Jul 19, 2015 at 9:00 AM

Anita dropping back to collect from Krul, now there’s a tactile change already. Under Pardew Krul to CB and panic or alternatively hooooooof.

  • 45 Tsunki // Jul 19, 2015 at 9:00 AM

Been staying a step back of late jail it looks like the optimism meter has swung wildly the other way and this new lot aren’t half way through their probationary period yet. I suspect that many on here would get their drives tarmacced by Ashley and his gang.

  • 46 Slank // Jul 19, 2015 at 9:13 AM

    Having just watched the match

Janmaat and Haidara must be first choice as our fullbacks. Haidara’s pace and crossing is so dangerous. He also works well with Aarons.

Aarons must also be first choice on the left. Very tricky, full of pace and directness. With Haidara we have a very effective left side.

Colback is also first choice. He was everywhere. Good in the tackle and good at passing.

Anita deserves his place but sadly it may only be at the expense of De Jong or Wijnaldum. Anita was neat and tidy.

Perez also deserves his place but in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation with a single striker flanked by Aarons and Sissoko I cannot see where he fits in other than as an effective substitute.

I was underwhelmed by De Jong. I’m not sure what I should expect as so many people have sung his praises. Perhaps it’s early days. Perhaps with Wijnaldum alongside him we will see the De Jong that so many have raved about.

The match was a good work out. The passing was better. The attack needs improving, hopefully within the next 48 hours it will. On to Portland.

  • 47 beermonkey // Jul 19, 2015 at 9:14 AM

what are ur lotto numbers seeing as though the last thing I read last night was you predicting an own goal win to us

  • 48 Altamullan // Jul 19, 2015 at 9:24 AM

Small victories Tsunki (literally and figuratively). I think there is cause for genuine optimism, let’s face it it would be tough to have a worse run. Also, I think Cashley has learned something, been influenced not just by near miss but by energy behind fan response. Even if not a meaningful change, I’ll take that; for now, and celebrate.

  • 49 cestriasteve // Jul 19, 2015 at 9:26 AM

Stank, I think De Jong just needs game time, he needs wrapping up in cotton wool to get him there, when he does he’ll be our Le Tissier. I’ll say a prayer for his calf muscles every day!!

  • 50 colwell // Jul 19, 2015 at 9:26 AM

Cisse didn’t play like he needed to win a place in the team, lazy and never really attempted to get himself on any of the crosses.

De Jong? fingers crossed is a million miles away from his normal self he was very poor and also looks like he has no speed at all.

The new way of playing doesn’t suit Sissoko he can’t do the one touch passing and keep the game flowing always stops with him.

Anyone see the Saints game yesterday? they look awesome their passing and movement where inch perfect 3 brilliantly worked goals.

  • 51 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jul 19, 2015 at 9:26 AM

JDdubai…I think you are simplifying something so important by just looking at a piece of paper!

…to many a formation /philosophy is just a drawing on a piece of paper with names on it!

    Just ask Pardew 😀

  • 52 LewSpi v2.0 // Jul 19, 2015 at 9:29 AM

I’d expect De Jong will need at least 5 or 6 games in the premiership to actually be anywhere near 100% match fit. The lad hasn’t played a run of competitive games for well over a year.

That’s the kind of patience I’m willing to have as a minimum anyway. Just a shame we have 5 very tough games in the first 8.

  • 53 ShirebrookToon // Jul 19, 2015 at 9:34 AM

Anybody tell me how Gini did?

  • 54 Jail for Ashley // Jul 19, 2015 at 9:37 AM

If you are correct then the various mobs, crews and anonymous gangs who hounded out Pardew and forced the fat man into revealing his voice deserve a lot more credit. Ironic how those lapping up this ‘new era’ are labelling those who brought about this fresh optimism are being labelled as whingers and moaners.

  • 55 Altamullan // Jul 19, 2015 at 9:43 AM

Shirebrook: some nice touches from Gini (Wij-Aye-Man…I know it doesn’t quite scan, but I like it!), great positional sense, and you can see he is an organiser. So far so good.

  • 56 AmericanMagpie // Jul 19, 2015 at 9:43 AM

    Here are the highlights.

  • 57 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 19, 2015 at 9:44 AM

Just finished watching last nights game. There were encouraging signs, the shape when we play out from the back looks promising. Another good push for fitness for a number of players, and a further opportunity to stake a claim for others.

Haidara needs to stay fit, he had a decent game last night, but is still suspect defensively. If that improves and he can stay fit, then he could do very well for us.

A few disappointments, but it is only pre season, and hopefully all will step up or ship out and be replaced by better.

  • 58 Altamullan // Jul 19, 2015 at 9:51 AM

Agree with you. At the risk of coming over all Californian, collective action (like cool man…) driven by love of a club (if you’re going to San Francisco….) even if it comes across as hate and bile, is to be applauded. Makes me proud that we care so much, for our team and for our place ( be sure to wear…). I choose to think, until proved otherwise, that it’s made a difference.
