Steve McClaren – We Are Very Very Close To Signings

Yesterday was a good day for Newcastle fans, in that the Belgium press said that Aleksandar Mitrovic had said his goodbyes to his team mates and was finally leaving the Anderlecht club after two years there, and was said to be flying to Newcastle for a medical.

But with no signs of him in Newcastle, that was cleared up by a Belgium report that he had flown to London and was there last night.

Aleksandar Mitrovic – in London last night

Couple that with the fact that Newcastle won 1-0 in their game with Sacramento Republic at Bonney Field early this morning,  and things are beginning to look up for Newcastle.

Although we struggled in the game and had Massadio Haidara sent off after 65 minutes.

Here’s the full video of that game.

The local journalists with the team in America got a chance after the game to question head coach Steve McClaren on how close Newcastle are to signing more players – and this is what he said:

“I think we’re very, very close.” “There’s a lot of speculation. Certainly from the feedback from back home, we’re working very hard to bring one or two more players in.”

The Mitrovic deal is being reported in Belgium that it’s €18M – (£12.7M) although the actual amount is also being reported as €16.5M elsewhere..

The whereabouts of Mitrovic was cleared up yesterday by Belgian publication Sports World (

The transfer of Aleksandar Mitrovic to Newcastle is in its final phase. The Anderlecht striker is in London to sign a contract and will first undergo medical tests this weekend at the Premier League club.

Mitrovic will be presented early next week at Newcastle. Sports world reported earlier this weekend that Anderlecht will receive €16.5M for the Serbian, and €2.4M are his base wages (plus extras) at Newcastle.

One question is whether we can also sign his team-mate Chancel Mbemba by tomorrow – when Mitrovic will be unveiled as a Newcastle player.

The news is that negotiations with him and his agent are in full swing.

And more potential good news last night from the Mirror,  that 25 year-old Monaco center-back target  Aymen Abdennour – is reported to be keen on joining Newcastle.

There could be some (very) good news for Newcastle in the next few days (and the next week) on the transfer front.
