Steve McClaren – We Are Very Very Close To Signings

9:35 am, Sunday, July 19th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 39 Comments

Yesterday was a good day for Newcastle fans, in that the Belgium press said that Aleksandar Mitrovic had said his goodbyes to his team mates and was finally leaving the Anderlecht club after two years there, and was said to be flying to Newcastle for a medical.

But with no signs of him in Newcastle, that was cleared up by a Belgium report that he had flown to London and was there last night.

aleksandar mitrovic hands out wide

Aleksandar Mitrovic – in London last night

Couple that with the fact that Newcastle won 1-0 in their game with Sacramento Republic at Bonney Field early this morning,  and things are beginning to look up for Newcastle.

Although we struggled in the game and had Massadio Haidara sent off after 65 minutes.

Here’s the full video of that game.

The local journalists with the team in America got a chance after the game to question head coach Steve McClaren on how close Newcastle are to signing more players – and this is what he said:

“I think we’re very, very close.” “There’s a lot of speculation. Certainly from the feedback from back home, we’re working very hard to bring one or two more players in.”

The Mitrovic deal is being reported in Belgium that it’s €18M – (£12.7M) although the actual amount is also being reported as €16.5M elsewhere..

The whereabouts of Mitrovic was cleared up yesterday by Belgian publication Sports World (

The transfer of Aleksandar Mitrovic to Newcastle is in its final phase. The Anderlecht striker is in London to sign a contract and will first undergo medical tests this weekend at the Premier League club.

Mitrovic will be presented early next week at Newcastle. Sports world reported earlier this weekend that Anderlecht will receive €16.5M for the Serbian, and €2.4M are his base wages (plus extras) at Newcastle.

One question is whether we can also sign his team-mate Chancel Mbemba by tomorrow – when Mitrovic will be unveiled as a Newcastle player.

The news is that negotiations with him and his agent are in full swing.

And more potential good news last night from the Mirror,  that 25 year-old Monaco center-back target  Aymen Abdennour – is reported to be keen on joining Newcastle.

There could be some (very) good news for Newcastle in the next few days (and the next week) on the transfer front.

Comments welcome.

Anyone remember the last time a player “about to sign” for Toon, stopped in London overnight and next day ‘arry had stitched him up?
    Remy anyone?

Just finished watching last nights game. There were encouraging signs, the shape when we play out from the back looks promising. Another good push for fitness for a number of players, and a further opportunity to stake a claim for others.

Haidara needs to stay fit, he had a decent game last night, but is still suspect defensively. If that improves and he can stay fit, then he could do very well for us.

A few disappointments, but it is only pre season, and hopefully all will step up or ship out and be replaced by better.

    “One or two more signings”

Not quite what i wanted to read. We need at least 3 more imo. Mitro, mbemba, and if its only 3, the third should be a utility defender. But idealy i would want a winger and another utility squad forward. I am greedy.

Yep, the remy saga springs instantly to mind. More likely to be chelski this time though. Jose will be there with his ps4 and his copy of fifa.

We need 6 more players in I think:

    1. CB – Mbemba
    2. CB – Non African
    3. RB – Young promising Brit
    4. Winger – Someone with an end product
    5. FW – Mitrovic
    6. FW – Someone like Berahino

I can’t work out why Abdennour hasn’t been picked up by a truly top team, he’s better than Stone, granted he’s not proven in the EPL.
Did anyone see Southampton, pure class, yer man Koeman is a brilliant coach.

Thanks Ron knee. Think mclaren must be getting an idea now of the style of play he wants and who he wants to keep. Bet the clear out would be bigger than a sports direct shop

With us you can never be confident about potential signings With us no matter how close the deal is to being done until you see the player in his toon top or standing on the pitch with his new scarf

  • 15 Belfast // Jul 19, 2015 at 9:57 AM

Danish bloke put a sock in it.

    And release Toon from Leeds.

So far Diem de Jong has done nothing to warrant a place over Perez, team should be sale based on Reputation, he needs to get sharp and prove himself, hopefully he does, as he looks clever,

He reminds me so much of Teddy Sheringham, somebody who was clearly effective but I never liked him, love pace players me.

Aarons needs to be tied down to a long contract, boys dynamite.

Some nice partnerships starting to form, Hadaara/Aarons, Janmaat/Sissoko, Anita/Colback, at last some identity to the team.

Willo, Cisse Out. Steven Taylor looked canny wen he came on an all.

  • 17 cestriasteve // Jul 19, 2015 at 9:59 AM

Do think he’s going to play Anita or Tiote in the defensive midfield position, I think that’s the position which will define our ultimate shape.

  • 18 pik82 // Jul 19, 2015 at 10:00 AM

The report says he’s having a medical for Newcastle in London. at a guess club doctors are in America with the team…. have medical in London, do the interviews then direct flight straight out to America while we announce it 😉 for the final game over there… at least I hope so

  • 19 ShirebrookToon // Jul 19, 2015 at 10:01 AM

Is it true that we ain’t going to sign mitrovic until after the next game?

  • 20 geordie157 // Jul 19, 2015 at 10:01 AM

Looks like Janmaat’s back up could be Barnsley’s Holgate, rumours of a 1mill bid. Man U are interested.

We wait till Monday. We have a close realtionship with that Isreali agent so I think he wont f@ck up. We only do business with our close pals. Carr’s words.

Have to say it is much nicer on the blog where there is a little bit of hope now – got too depressing for the first half of 2015.

Actually feel myself looking forward to checking Newsnow each day, and even looking forward to watching friendlies at 7am too.

Said in February i would wait and see what the summer holds and if attitudes will change as they said they would and so far, Mitrovi and a CB permitting, it is looking much healthier.

  • 26 JDdubai // Jul 19, 2015 at 10:12 AM

Imagine if Pards and Palace stepped in in London to nick Mitrovic a la Remy!! God this place would explode.

  • 27 Jamseyd24 // Jul 19, 2015 at 10:15 AM

JD, hate to sound negative but I watched the game and didn’t really see anything different that what we have seen in last few yrs. Passing game was hopeless. The yanks looked like the premiership team. A lot to do yet.

  • 28 will die for the toon army // Jul 19, 2015 at 10:15 AM

    My dream signings:
    Austin, Mitrovic, Abdennour, Mbemba, Wijnaldum.

Colo, Willo, Maurvuex, Obertan, Vickic, Elliot, Goufrann, Cisse, Cheick.

  • 29 cyprus // Jul 19, 2015 at 10:17 AM

Ok, just watched my first game.

Hard to comment after a friendly and so soon. We were relatively comfortable, throughout, though we aren’t getting enough attacking chances.

It appears that Anita, Colback, Siss, SDJ, will be important this year. Anita was very comfortable, as was Colback. Siss will be taking inititative going forward. SDJ seems a clever player, though not sure he’s fit enough to play full games.

Aarons was impressive, and Perez must somewhow fitted in permanently, along with Mitro.

The team needs work, but early days, was ok. No idea how bad (or good) Sacramento is…

  • 30 Fostino // Jul 19, 2015 at 10:17 AM

In an ideal world we’d sell goufran. .obertan. ..riverie…Willo. ..collo…cabella

We would then buy mitrovic.. .Austin. ..thauvin. .townsand. ..dmeaba… ..Monaco cb. …

  • 31 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jul 19, 2015 at 10:19 AM

Its going to take Mclaren a while to get the team playing the way he needs to it took Pochettino about 3 months to get Southampton fully adapted to his pressing style and that was during the season when the players will be fit !

On the same note Spurs never really adapted until he started playing the youngsters the senior “stars” never bought into it which I feel we may get a bit of that with Cisse and Sissoko who sometimes look like they cant be bothered you cant do that in a pressing team !

Obertan , Gouffran , Sissoko , Tiote , Colo and Cisse are our experienced core and they are the ones that let us down and cant be bothered a lot of the time their attitudes are going to have to change or need shipped out , Williamson and Taylor are poor technically but they do give 100% every time they are on the pitch !

A mixture of Dutch , Spanish and English players would be the best combination for hard work ethic and passing ability

  • 32 juan // Jul 19, 2015 at 10:22 AM

Worrying thing about mcclaren statement ” one or two more signings” if that’s including mitrovic were gonna struggle again. Need to offload gouf Williamson marveaux obertan cisse or rivière

The 1 or 2 more players statement may be regarding close to signing, ie – “we are working very hard to bring 1 or 2 players in” – and what he didn’t then say was – and will be looking to bring 1 or 2 more in later in the window

    maybe thats wishful thinking

  • 36 WLtoon // Jul 19, 2015 at 11:01 AM

Im a bit uneasy about Mitrovic being darn sarf.
And why does the deal have to wait to be finalized.
Id he courting Chelsea while he.s in London.?
To save all these questions mitrovic why dont you just sign the fooking contract man.
This stinks of the Remy scenario.

  • 37 WLtoon // Jul 19, 2015 at 11:09 AM

Why is,nt the Mitrovic deal been sealed?
The fact he,s in London makes me very uneasy when you consider Chelsea are just down the road.
This smacks of the Remy scenario and if the serbian has,nt signed by tomorrow then i think its not going to happen.
Cant see why they have to wait for a signiture if everything is a done deal as reports suggest.
