Aston Villa Odds-On Favorites To Sign Newcastle Top Target

9:59 am, Monday, July 20th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 93 Comments

A deal has been agreed between Aston Villa and Liverpool for the signing of Christian Benteke, and it looks like Villa will get around £32M  for their Belgium striker, and to think they paid £7M for him three years ago from Genk.

That must qualify as a Mike Ashley type deal, and Liverpool continue to pay out huge fees for their new players.

Villa manager Tim Sherwood will now have to bring in at least one  top striker to replace him, and that’s why Aston Villa are now odds-on favorites to sign Charlie Austin from QPR.

charlie austin qpr

Charlie Austin – now odds-on to join Aston Villa

Sherwood has been linked with his former striker at Tottenham, Emmanuel Adebayor, and there’s news they will bid £15M for West Brom’s striker Saido Berahino, as well as that for Charlie Austin.

For the £32M they got for Benteke, they could but both Charlie Austin and Saido Berahino and still have something left over.

Aston Villa are now odds-on favorites at most betting shops to sign Austin, with them being 4/6 odds-on at Skybet and 8/15 at Betfair – to name but two.

Newcastle are second favorites at 2/1 and 5/2 respectively at those two betting shops.

And to think the betting was halted on Newcastle getting him only last week, but that also happened back on June 20th with West Ham looking like they had won the race to sign him.

But the betting odds seem to go up and down like a yo-yo,  so we still think we have a decent chance of getting Charlie Austin to Newcastle – but we had better move for him now and pay the full £15M for him.

If Newcastle are still not willing to pay the full amount for him, Aston Villa will – and they will beat us to the striker with a £15M offer.

If that happens it will be like in years gone by, when we have held out for a better deal – in this case by about £2M – and another club comes in quickly and seals the deal by bidding what the selling club want.

It would be deja-vu all over again for Newcastle.

Comments welcome.

It’s getting to the stage that Penfold the sloth,is running out of time to get people over the line
Other teams 4/5 days start to finish,us weeks ffs

    Ashley OUT !

  • 3 Jib // Jul 20, 2015 at 10:11 AM

    We don’t need Austin
If Ed had checked more odds for Villa , they are one of the growing favourites for relegation as well.

  • 4 lochinvar // Jul 20, 2015 at 10:14 AM

I mentioned in previous comments that Villa were awash with cash after selling Benteke and Delph for some £40m and plenty of comments out there that they would chase Austin to placate their fans.
But the club is for sale and would be purchasers backed off as presumably they saw that Villa are more likely to go down than up.
Charlie needs to think about what type of club he plays for – passionate ambitious 52,000 fans at NUFC or stuck in the middle of nowhere in the West Midlands listening to the traffic at Spagetti junction. If Mrs. Austin wants a quality of life she would do well to stamp her foot on Charlie moving to Villa.
QPR to Villa is hardly a career move.

Can you find some other theme.
The calling of Charnley is starting to make you look stupid.

  • 6 TheToonKing // Jul 20, 2015 at 10:18 AM

I’m fine with this. After Mitrovic we don’t need Austin. We’ll most likely play with one up front. We have Mitrovic, Perez and Riviere.

I’d buy another striker, but someone younger with potential. Austin needs to be a starter which he probably wouldn’t be with Mitrovic around.

  • 7 catchy in norway // Jul 20, 2015 at 10:19 AM

please don’t take this as a “I forgive you” msg , but for the first time in a long time I’m happy to be an nufc fan, he “Ashley ” has put together a good coaching team , they have assessed what we have at the club and are addressing the playing staff with quality players that are used to playing at the top end of the table,

it may have taken him 8 years “off pure hell” but I see us moving in the right direction , where as Liverpool are IMO moving in the other direction, Rodgers threw his back room under the bus to get one more season, when he made all the decisions , karma is going to catch up with him.

as for this article , pick 2 defenders as long as one is Williamson I don’t care, captain Colo I like but should be more vocal and is getting old, Saylor could be good but gets injured way to often , and seem to think what ever manager we have in place is the bees knees , he waxed lyrical about joke in ear, but he is brave or some say stupid,

I think top 6 this season , £100 going on that to

  • 8 WLtoon // Jul 20, 2015 at 10:19 AM

Did,nt think we would follow up the Austin deal after Mitrovic decided to come.
Ashley may of eased the purse strings but i doubt he would let SM spend nearly 30M on one position.
It was said we had 40M to spend so with the Mbemba deal, that leaves us with 6-7 M to spend, and imo i think tht will be spent on a CB, unless we generae more funds by selling one or 2 of course.

  • 9 Toonfan8 // Jul 20, 2015 at 10:20 AM

if we will get Mitrovic, we should buy not Austin, but go for Berahino/Rolán…that is type of forward to complete our jigsaw, quick, good finish and can play both wide and in the middle…but first bring Mbemba and go for Abdennour, then Berahino/Rolan…

  • 10 lesh // Jul 20, 2015 at 10:23 AM

It’s a tricky call to say that Villa will blow a lot on players.

It’s well known that Villa are up for sale and whether the owner’ll be keen to commit the club to major expense and tie a player to a long term deal.
I’d suggest they’re more likely to go for a cheapie, loan or a free.

However, the point if the article is whether we want Austin or more likely, Berinho who would seem to be a better investment.

That’s like saying a move to either of the Manchesters condemns wives to living in Moss-side
Have you seen some of the villages in Warwickshire about 50 minutes drive away from Villa Park ?

  • 12 Toonfan8 // Jul 20, 2015 at 10:23 AM

It was mentioned between 40-80M availible…
    Wijnaldum 14,5, Mitrovic 12, Mbemba 7,5…thats 34…and we need another CB Abdennour/Rudiger type 15M, Berahino/Rolan 15M and that would suit perfect…

  • 13 lesh // Jul 20, 2015 at 10:25 AM

That can’t be Catchy posting positives – somebody’s using his name in vain!

  • 14 joethelion // Jul 20, 2015 at 10:25 AM

AVFC didn’t set the Premier League alight-granted. ‘Passionate and ambitious’ you may well be but we were separated by 1 point and 3 goals. Is that more of an attractive prospect than Villa for Mr & Mrs Austin?

  • 15 Liono // Jul 20, 2015 at 10:27 AM

some interesting striker moves the prem this year. hopefully mitro can show what he’s made of. think we might need another striker alongside him. although i couldnt see mirto and austin playing together regularly. they are both target men strikers for me. Mitro and perez could form a great partnership hopefully!

  • 16 Slank // Jul 20, 2015 at 10:27 AM

I’m not convinced that Austin was ever our top target.

Given the almost certain complications, length of time and the perseverance of the club to get Mitrovic it points towards him being the top target and not Austin.

  • 17 Jamseyd24 // Jul 20, 2015 at 10:28 AM

I too am pretty happy but lets not kid ourselfs, our coaching team is yet to be tested. let save judgement for maybe Nov. We are 4 quality players short still, and none off the players we are going for are tested.

catchy @7 – That’s about the most optimistic post I’ve even seen from you 🙂 But I know what you mean – I am cautiously optimistic about the future. I’m not sure we’ll get s top 6 finish but hopefully we’ll be in, say, the top ten and play better football.

  • 21 catchy in norway // Jul 20, 2015 at 10:34 AM

    Lesh 😉

1000% me, and why shouldn’t i ? 🙂 , I have championing Steve Macs name since the begining of last season, good player are coming in, and IMO I believe we already had a pretty good squad that was mismanaged, I know I could do a lot better than both p45 or charver,

I have always said I’m am a very positive person , but I speak my mind and say it as I see it.

lord know I was right about p45 from a very early stage , the seaon we finished 5th IMO was a total fluke and in some ways I feel we could and should have finished higher, but he bottled it,

it’s going to be different 🙂

  • 22 mickalfas // Jul 20, 2015 at 10:34 AM

Thought Milan were prepared to pay €30m for Aymen
Even with all the new found optimism ,are we supposed to match that
Roughly £22m,seems a lot for us

  • 23 Klam3r // Jul 20, 2015 at 10:35 AM

Agreed. New backroom staff, new and attack minded head coach and two cracking signings. I’m totally positive right now. Newcastle won’t “click” from the get go but if we buy like this in the future windows we might be a force to reckon with again.

We’re actually going to try to win maatches playing on the deck again this season and that alone is new, exotic and f****** beautiful:)

I think a some of the players in the States know they are in the last chance saloon.
On NUFCtv for NUFC24/7 part 3 they give Haidara one of those telescopic rod camera thingies and he goes everywhere with it.
    Very insightful.
For example Obertan’s attitude stinks and he’s permanently got a face like a smacked arse (not that it’s ever been beautiful)
I think some players have been told to pull their socks up or they are offski

I don’t see us in the top six.

If we did get in the top six then it would mean that one of either Chelsea, Man City, Arsenal, Man Utd, Spurs or Liverpool would have had a truly disastrous season, which I cannot see happening.

I do think that we have a far better chance in knocking either Southampton, Swansea, Stoke or Palace off the top ten places.

I do think we will be better than Swansea, Stoke and Palace. However, it might be a close run thing with Southampton.

    Jib @ 23

When McClaren said something to the effect that everyone has a fresh start it was only polite phraseology for either ‘shape up or ship out’.

What is interesting is there is a lack of rumours about other clubs coming in for our players. I fully expected rumours about Cisse, Sissoko and Tiote.

Just reading that Mehdi Abeid might be on his way back to France with Lille and Montpellier interested.

It is a shame with a guy that we have nurtured but at the same time with th current crop of midfielders I don’t see him coming into the team.

Or should we sell Tiote while we can, save some salary money and get a nice fee.

For Abeid, you just can’t keep on loaning them out forever, can you?

  • 44 lochinvar // Jul 20, 2015 at 10:58 AM

Was just having a quiet dig at Villa – Warwickshire is fine !
Thinking about it Austin may now be surplus to our needs and a few people have mentioned that. Might be that Rolan as a goal poacher and good value would be a good younger investment and eventual replacement for older Cisse who could be sold in January window (?)
Another monster CB should perhaps be the priority to improve defence from cross balls.
Waiting to see what happens with interest.

Munster Mag @38 – Agreed, we are quick enough to slag off players & club officials so you have to give credit where it’s due also. Obviously the Mitrovic deal was complex and we had to persuade him & his family to come here rather than a club in the CL.Clubs like Chelsea & Citee can do deals quickly because the players need less cajoling!

  • 54 thegaffer // Jul 20, 2015 at 11:12 AM

    Janmaat Mbemba Abdennour Haidara
    Anita Colback
    Wijnaldum De Jong Berahino
Darlow, Lascelles, Abeid, Fer, Cabella, Aarons, Perez

Now that’s a team worthy of Europe!

Tiote and Cisse has to go, sell them for a respectable figure while we still can. Sissoko is no better, have u guys seen him play recently.. tries to dribble and falters every time giving away the ball unnecessarily.. Poor passes all around.. putting pressure on other team mates when they push forward and he gives it away.. the worst player to play possession football.

It’s my opinion ,about Penfold ,that is ,its a blog isn’t it?
If Penfold is so great why can’t he multitask ,the defence needs a complete overhaul and nothings happening ,possibly Mbemba, which in my mind is NOT enough
Fair enough things are changing for the better, but they should be sorting out the weakest part of the squad
Mitrovic is a great signing ,if it happens, but having the donkeys at the back will negate any plus that be can give us

We go into a new season with fresh hope, a ”footballing” pass and move manager and hopefully no more ”hoof it” willo. Now just have to mentally block out the SD and wonga signs

  • 58 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jul 20, 2015 at 11:23 AM

So thats Rivere , Cabella , Marveux , Good and Colo going to probably miss the start of the season so thats 5 players out of a 25 man squad down already

Add in Williamson , Gouffran , Obertan , Ferguson , Vuckic and Bigi who probably wont play or are not good enough

So thats ELEVEN PLAYERS out of 25 not really good enough or injured leaving us with a decent number of 14 players good to play

No, that’s 5 players out of our (current) roster of 28 players who are aged 21 and over (including Wijnaldum) plus the players who would qualify as under 21 – ie. Aarons, Woodman, Armstrong and (probably) Mitrovic and Mbemba. So that’s 5 players out of a total squad size of about 33 (ignoring any additional players that might be coming in). To just quote the number 25 as the squad size is totally misleading.

Nobody seems to be mentioning Dummett as a CB.
He did a good job in that position when called upon to do so last season.
With him, Mbemba, the guy from Forest, and, say,Colo, we could dispense with Saylor and Willo.

  • 77 JDdubai // Jul 20, 2015 at 11:59 AM

    All looking rosy again.

Glad to see ESPN pushing the Colo to Palace rumours – would love Pards to take him off our hands – if we manage to get rid of him then i think we will really get a 2nd CB in.

Mbemba, Saylor, Lascelles, new CB(Abdennour?), then Dummett as 5th choice/LB cover.

Id take this and a new young RB as Janmaat cover and that would be fair to start with.

I would prefer Colo and Willo to leave…We should have for next season CB: Mbemba,S.Taylor,Lascelles,Dummet and one another top CB like Abdennour/Rudiger…and we will definetely see another Newcastle this year, I am confident, that we can go for top 8…if we manage to bring another top CB and Berahino/Rolan we can go to top 6

Of the three Colo, Willo n Saylor.. I would keep Saylor coz he is a piper magpie and loves the club from his heart.. his injuries won’t be much of an issue as bench warmer.. he is fearless too! Colo being the highest paid player should not be kept as a reserve and chucked off from the wage bill.. and no comments on Willo.

We need specialist not round pegs in square holes. Dummett did ok at CB Yes but if we get injuries to CB’s and Haidara then where does dummett play?

  • 81 thegaffer // Jul 20, 2015 at 12:04 PM

Saylor is young than the two and he dusnt moan being on the bench too. He’s had always got a great attitude over the years!

  • 82 JDdubai // Jul 20, 2015 at 12:07 PM

Dummett should be 5th choice CB and 2nd choice LB.

With Mbemba, Saylor, new CB(Abdennour?), Lascelles ahead of him then CB should be ok with Dummett as emergency cover – even with Willo and Colo shipped out.

On thread, Id guess Austin was always 2nd choice behind Mitrovic.

when it looked like Mitrovic wasnt coming they released bits about his attitude etc and then the rumours of austin escalated. Then when it came clear we actually had a good shot at Mitrovic 2 weeks ago the Austin talk stopped dead.

Austin and Mitrovic both want to be first choice, both wont get it with us – Austin must go to Villa surely?

If I get Zouma on loab then am good to go. I really love Abdennour but I wld rather keep my 15m to 20m as I study the situation. Good players keep popping up.

I want Austin. Cisse is in his yesteryears.

  • 84 Rotonda heights // Jul 20, 2015 at 12:09 PM

Why keep someone on 50k a year to maybe get on the bench for 11 games a year. I’m a proper geordie and fearless but I’m not good enough to play for NUFC, just as carver wasn’t good enough to manage or coach.

Willo, colo and saylor should all punted for different reasons. That gives us M’Bemba (hopefully,) Lascelles, Dummet, Satka, Good.

So we need one of Veltman, N’Kolou, Rutiger, Matip.

Unlike you I don’t research all my knowledge on Google, I got the impression from comments on here that he had spent a few quid at Derby. You should learn to differ from NUFC and Mike Ashley. NUFC will still be here long after the fat parasitse has gone.

if we could have this squad I would be over the moon:
    Midfielders:Wijnaldum,Anita,Colback,Tiote,Sissoko,De Jong,Aarons,Cabella,Marveaux

I think there is enough time to bring Abdennour and Berahino, if Mitrovic and Mbemba are deals done…and we will look strong to compete for top positions…

  • 87 Toonfan8 // Jul 20, 2015 at 12:15 PM

I always rate this 34M for Wijnaldum,Mitrovic and Mbemba as cash, which should have been spent in last season…and now they should bring players for this season 😀 Abdennour and Berahino, here we come…

  • 88 manni // Jul 20, 2015 at 12:16 PM

To be honest even if Mbemba is 26,id still rather have him in the team over Willo 32,Taylor 30,colo 33. And reading his profile looks better than all 3 of them and at £7m hes a bargain !!

  • 89 Noel Worst // Jul 20, 2015 at 12:19 PM

Offer Hull City £1m and Mike Williamson for Curtis Davies. Positionally sound, aerially good CB with just a year left on his contract and disgruntled at being scapegoated by Bruce halfway through their season, when they were doing relatively well compared to where they ended up. No surprise they plummeted when he was shunned in favour of the overrated Michael Dawson. Who does that to their captain and player of the season from the year before for no good reason?

  • 90 Our Toon // Jul 20, 2015 at 12:23 PM

I’d keep willo, he’s the worst CB out of Saylor and Colo but he’s also worth 1m at the very most. He’ll be on very little in terms of wage compared to both willo and Saylor. Get Saylor and colo off the books as wages are high. Only if we bring in 2 CB’s

I still think we need a winger to deliver good quality crosses after CBs are signed

  • 91 Shadow_Shearer // Jul 20, 2015 at 12:29 PM

The defence will not be sorted over night. Willo taylor & colo are not gonna be sold. They have one year left on there contracts, the club will let them run there contract out, & then replace them. This is what SM ment by THREE transfer windows!!

This season is about embedding a pass & move philosophy in the team. Which will be exciting. But next season it’s gonna be 3 new centre backs, good philosophy, & aiming for Europe!!

  • 92 Malackay // Jul 20, 2015 at 12:40 PM

It’s not surprising seeing financially conscious clubs such as ourselves look to the continent even more this window. It’s worth noting the Greece impact on the Euro and the implications the subsequent £/€ rate will have on GB import/exports.

For example, if Ashley were to spend £50m last summer he’d have been able to get c.€63m worth of players form Europe. Now that £50m is worth an extra €9m @ €72m. It might not seem much but I guarantee it will impact MA thinking.

I hope Mitrovic lives up to his billing he is getting on this forum.

On a side note, I was very impressed with both De Jong and Aarons against Sacramento. Aarons (assuming he is fit) would make my starting 11 every time, especially with a striker such as Mitrovic leading the line.

  • 93 toon-to-win // Jul 20, 2015 at 3:48 PM

Theres alot of moaning about new CB’s, but it has been said that its going to take 3 transfer windows to get this squad where it needs to be before we start challenging for the top 6 year in year out. Dont forget when we signed woodgate years ago, he was a one man defence at times so who says that mbemba wont do the same.
