A deal has been agreed between Aston Villa and Liverpool for the signing of Christian Benteke, and it looks like Villa will get around £32M for their Belgium striker, and to think they paid £7M for him three years ago from Genk.
That must qualify as a Mike Ashley type deal, and Liverpool continue to pay out huge fees for their new players.
Villa manager Tim Sherwood will now have to bring in at least one top striker to replace him, and that’s why Aston Villa are now odds-on favorites to sign Charlie Austin from QPR.
Charlie Austin – now odds-on to join Aston Villa
Sherwood has been linked with his former striker at Tottenham, Emmanuel Adebayor, and there’s news they will bid £15M for West Brom’s striker Saido Berahino, as well as that for Charlie Austin.
For the £32M they got for Benteke, they could but both Charlie Austin and Saido Berahino and still have something left over.
Aston Villa are now odds-on favorites at most betting shops to sign Austin, with them being 4/6 odds-on at Skybet and 8/15 at Betfair – to name but two.
Newcastle are second favorites at 2/1 and 5/2 respectively at those two betting shops.
And to think the betting was halted on Newcastle getting him only last week, but that also happened back on June 20th with West Ham looking like they had won the race to sign him.
But the betting odds seem to go up and down like a yo-yo, so we still think we have a decent chance of getting Charlie Austin to Newcastle – but we had better move for him now and pay the full £15M for him.
If Newcastle are still not willing to pay the full amount for him, Aston Villa will – and they will beat us to the striker with a £15M offer.
If that happens it will be like in years gone by, when we have held out for a better deal – in this case by about £2M – and another club comes in quickly and seals the deal by bidding what the selling club want.
It would be deja-vu all over again for Newcastle.

Comment #42Loving it seeing actual quality players being bought but McClaren is going to need some time to get them to understand each other and his game plan.
Just hope he is backed again if we need players in Jan and again next summer.

Comment #43After Wijnaldum, Mitrovic & Mbemba.. hope NUFC signs just 2 more (Abdennour & Berahino).. and we are all set.. the core is made.. complete these 2 fast.. after that the selling starts for the deadwood.. as money rolls in, we can look at Leroy Fer and others..

Was just having a quiet dig at Villa – Warwickshire is fine !
Thinking about it Austin may now be surplus to our needs and a few people have mentioned that. Might be that Rolan as a goal poacher and good value would be a good younger investment and eventual replacement for older Cisse who could be sold in January window (?)
Another monster CB should perhaps be the priority to improve defence from cross balls.
Waiting to see what happens with interest.

‘What is interesting is there is a lack of rumours about other clubs coming in for our players…’
Spoke too soon.
Much prefer Tiote gone than Mehdi Abeid but either of them will, I feel, be second fiddle to Anita,Wijnaldum, De Jong and Colbeck.

I haven’t given up on Lewis Dunk yet.
He was the first one we were linked with way back at the end of May.

omg that would have been hell for me, but it’s nice to see we are becoming a football club again , the news is about good players coming in and plenty of positive stuff coming from the coaching team,
I’d be very sad to see abied go, I think he a diamond that needs polishing and could be one of our better players giving the chance

Comment #53Munster Mag @38 – Agreed, we are quick enough to slag off players & club officials so you have to give credit where it’s due also. Obviously the Mitrovic deal was complex and we had to persuade him & his family to come here rather than a club in the CL.Clubs like Chelsea & Citee can do deals quickly because the players need less cajoling!

Now that’s a team worthy of Europe!
Tiote and Cisse has to go, sell them for a respectable figure while we still can. Sissoko is no better, have u guys seen him play recently.. tries to dribble and falters every time giving away the ball unnecessarily.. Poor passes all around.. putting pressure on other team mates when they push forward and he gives it away.. the worst player to play possession football.

Comment #55It’s my opinion ,about Penfold ,that is ,its a blog isn’t it?
If Penfold is so great why can’t he multitask ,the defence needs a complete overhaul and nothings happening ,possibly Mbemba, which in my mind is NOT enough
Fair enough things are changing for the better, but they should be sorting out the weakest part of the squad
Mitrovic is a great signing ,if it happens, but having the donkeys at the back will negate any plus that be can give us
Again my opinion ,that’s all

Comment #57To be fair to Catchy he advocated SM. I was dubious about him but I think everyone is now feeling more optimistic with the likes of Cathro coming in, plus quality targets crossing that line.
We go into a new season with fresh hope, a ”footballing” pass and move manager and hopefully no more ”hoof it” willo. Now just have to mentally block out the SD and wonga signs

Comment #58So thats Rivere , Cabella , Marveux , Good and Colo going to probably miss the start of the season so thats 5 players out of a 25 man squad down already
Add in Williamson , Gouffran , Obertan , Ferguson , Vuckic and Bigi who probably wont play or are not good enough
So thats ELEVEN PLAYERS out of 25 not really good enough or injured leaving us with a decent number of 14 players good to play
Oh and 3 of them are goalkeepers over the ages of 21 ……
We need to keep on spending !!

it was the most humiliating collapse I’ve ever seen, even by our standards. they say cook is back in form he’s failed 3 out of 4 innings!! Our top 4 are the slowest scorers in world cricket.
Don’t know why we didn’t just have a go, we were never going to save it blocking for 2 days

Comment #62Guys, I’m sorry but this mbemba fella isn’t 20. There is an official Fifa document date stamped April 2006 and a photo of him looking 18-21 on that. Certainly not 11 as he would have been in April 2006 if he was 20 now

to many on here wanted to judge him because he had umbrella once and not really look at his footballing stuff, I think from a footballing side of things we have got a great coach, and he has picked a good back room with skills to I there jobs not just friends or people that are Geordies.
I think he is a man in the same mould as SBR, he seems fair and know how he wants to play the game, p45 just wants to be popular,

Comment #67No Catchy, nothing to do with his umbrella but for the fact that we had to rely on his failure to get Derby promoted before he would consider us. I’m hoping that he can deliver good football and some Wembley finals in his time here but at the end of the day he is a sacked Championship manager that failed to get Derby promoted two years running despite spending a few quid.

Comment #71Terry – that is stretching credibility beyond breaking point – it certainly wont be this season. He has only just started putting right the mess he has created over the last seven years mate.
If the next two windows see strengthening of the squad along the lines of what we are seeing now – and, as of today, we have only signed ONE player – he might just become more acceptable, but I wouldn’t bank on it!!!

No, that’s 5 players out of our (current) roster of 28 players who are aged 21 and over (including Wijnaldum) plus the players who would qualify as under 21 – ie. Aarons, Woodman, Armstrong and (probably) Mitrovic and Mbemba. So that’s 5 players out of a total squad size of about 33 (ignoring any additional players that might be coming in). To just quote the number 25 as the squad size is totally misleading.

Comment #76Nobody seems to be mentioning Dummett as a CB.
He did a good job in that position when called upon to do so last season.
With him, Mbemba, the guy from Forest, and, say,Colo, we could dispense with Saylor and Willo.

Glad to see ESPN pushing the Colo to Palace rumours – would love Pards to take him off our hands – if we manage to get rid of him then i think we will really get a 2nd CB in.
Mbemba, Saylor, Lascelles, new CB(Abdennour?), then Dummett as 5th choice/LB cover.
Id take this and a new young RB as Janmaat cover and that would be fair to start with.

Comment #78I would prefer Colo and Willo to leave…We should have for next season CB: Mbemba,S.Taylor,Lascelles,Dummet and one another top CB like Abdennour/Rudiger…and we will definetely see another Newcastle this year, I am confident, that we can go for top 8…if we manage to bring another top CB and Berahino/Rolan we can go to top 6

Comment #79Of the three Colo, Willo n Saylor.. I would keep Saylor coz he is a piper magpie and loves the club from his heart.. his injuries won’t be much of an issue as bench warmer.. he is fearless too! Colo being the highest paid player should not be kept as a reserve and chucked off from the wage bill.. and no comments on Willo.
