Two Center-Backs To Be Sold This Summer

9:31 am, Monday, July 20th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 24 Comments

If we can get Aleksandar Mitrovic and Chancel Mbemba signed this week,  then Newcastle are making good progress on strengthening the side this summer, but we will still need to bring in one more striker and one more center-back.

Fab Coloccini – could be leaving Newcastle this summer

We are said to be in with a chance of signing Monaco center-back Aymen Abdennour, and Newcastle are interested in Schalke’s Joel Matip and Ajax central defender Joel Veltman.

If Newcastle can get two center-backs in,  we still have Fab Coloccini, Mike Williamson, Steven Taylor, Jamaal Lascelles and Curtis Good – so at least two of them will be sold.

The way Newcastle will look at it to get the best deal they can,  and maybe it’s between Coloccini, Mike Wilkinson and Steven Taylor – and all three have contracts that end next summer.

Coloccini gets £60K/week,  so he is very likely to be sold to reduce the wage bill, and then it would probably be Steve McClaren’s choice as to who he keeps between Taylor and Williamson.

Mike turns 32 in November and Steven turns 30 in January, but the Whitley Bay lad also picks up a lot of injuries, although he played well in Sacramento on Saturday night.

It looks like Mitrovic will be announced as a Newcastle player today, and we just didn’t think we could get the 20 year-old through the door. but it looks like we were wrong.

He will be a terrific signing if it goes through, and he was certainly relaxed and all smiles when he arrived at Newcastle airport yesterday.

In Belgium they reported he was smiling from ear to ear when he arrived at Newcastle.

If we can get another striker through the door like Charlie Austin or Bas Dost, then we think Newcastle will sell Papiss Cisse.

They will try to get as much as they can for him, but with Papiss now fully fit again, he could have a big season for us next season.

We’d still like to keep him, but if two top strikers come in this summer, that seems unlikely.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

    Mick (previous)

Agree with that. Van Dijk seems a perfect fit for me.

    1. Dutch (no AFCON)
    2. 24 year old
    3. 6 foot 4
    4. Played in Britain
    5. Only lives 150 miles away
    6. Champions league experience
    7. Scores a LOT of goals 9 in 71 apps for Celtic

I would def keep Taylor, he is ok when fit and would be a decent home grown back up. Williamson needs to get going ASAP.

I really cant see us getting 2 CBs this window tho.

A google search says he started his career in 2006. He must have been a very big 11 year old 🙂

    half serious mate 😉

I always aim that high, then slowly temper my expectations as we go on those amazing (losing) runs. So, yes: CL it is

I hate it when spurs, liver fans tell me (each year) you should be safely mid-table this year, no worries, there are a lot worse teams than yours.

‘Thanks so much for the vote of confidence and f… you’! 🙂

    Van Dijk played in Britain
SPFL you have to be joking
You may as well say he’s played in The Evo-Stik League Northern Premier League

Jib, totally agree about Scotland. We all rem Bumsong ( Excuse spelling) The Scot Prem Is and div 1 standard at best.

Mbemba himself thinks he was born in 1990… i.e. 25, not 20!

Can’t quite remember anyone from the Evo stick league playing in the Champions league, can you?

Celtic would give us a run for our money at the minute

When people are talking about Abdennour, I wonder if they have considered the quantity of non EU players we currently (potentially) have.

Assuming we will sign both Mitrovic and Mbemba, we will have:

    1. Colocinni
    2. Cisse
    3. Good
    4. Tiote
    5. Mitrovic
    6. Mbemba

I’m not entirely sure on the quota, but I know Greg Dyke is trying to reduce it. Does this mean that 1 or 2 of those would be leaving? Or does it mean we would not be bringing in any more non EUs?

On the other hand I was stuck on 29 for like 10 years. A total mystery. (The wife for 20)

  • 12 nut meg // Jul 20, 2015 at 9:52 AM

    1 2 3 & 4 could all be leaving soon…who knows.

Is there still interest in Tiote and Cisse from Turkey ,Qatar ?
Or have we priced ourselves out of a sale?

Willo is no cb he is not even a footballer any other team would have got rid years ago

Willo, obertan and gouffran out and I’ll be a happy man

  • 18 magpiesi // Jul 20, 2015 at 10:04 AM

I expect collo to go to palace end of window

As smc saying he’s the captain not wanting to upset the team but he won’t be fit for the kick off. So I think pardew will come in for him maybe 2-3m and give him a 2 year contract.

    LewSpi v2.0
Teams from Iceland (pop329,100) play in the CL
We have played many pre seasons v Celtic they have yet to beat us.

  • 20 WLtoon // Jul 20, 2015 at 10:06 AM

    @10 Lews

I think ,or hope the club will be aware of the regulations, but if we bring in another CB outside the EU its taken for granted that Colo will be sold, so it will balance it up .

  • 21 dannyhunt // Jul 20, 2015 at 10:18 AM

i though colo was desperate to get back to san lorenzo anyway? id keep taylor over willo, might need the odd hand ball on the line save next season

  • 22 sks_toon // Jul 20, 2015 at 10:50 AM

I would be happy if we lose Willo and Good, keep Jamal, Taylor and Collocini, sign Mbemba and another CB and we will be set this year

  • 23 YohanKebabShop // Jul 20, 2015 at 11:08 AM

Guys, I’m sorry but this guy isn’t 20. There is an official Fifa document date stamped April 2006 and a photo of him looking 18-21 on that. Certainly not 11 as he would have been in April 2006 if he was 20 now

  • 24 Rotonda heights // Jul 20, 2015 at 11:12 AM

i would definitely bin taylor (and willo.) what use is a seriously slow back up with poor positional sense for 11 matches a season.
