Two Top Players In For £27M – A Good Start

Newcastle announced the signing of Aleksandar Mitrovic from Anderlecht this morning for £12.5M,  and that came 10 days after we had brought in our first singing of the summer in Gini Wijnaldum of PSV for £14.5M.

Those are the 4th and 3rd highest transfer fees ever paid by Newcastle,  with the likelihood that we will soon be seeing Anderlecht center-back Chancel Mbemba joining Newcastle for around £7M – hopefully in the next few days.

New £12.5M signing Aleksandar Mitrovic at Newcastle

So Newcastle have brought in two really excellent players to fortify the squad which certainly needed strengthening after the second half of last season.

Newcastle were simply pathetic under interim head coach John Carver, and we went for a stretch of 10 successive games with just one point – the worst run of results ever in the Premier League ever by Newcastle – and that included eight successive defeats for the first ever in the PL too.

It even looks like Newcastle are now trying to re-establish the name of Newcastle United as a top club in England,  after we were almost dramatically relegated – and with five minutes to go in our last game of the season at home to West Ham – that was still a possibility.

That should never be allowed to happen again.

It’s now looking like Mike Ashley was really serious when he said he would give the Board a stack of money to spend this summer, and then leave it up to them as to which players they would bring  in.

Ashley also left it to the Board to select the new manager, which turned out to be Steve McClaren.

W now could be headed towards one of our best transfer windows for a long long time, but it’s still only two players we have brought in.

Newcastle now need at least thee more players of the caliber of the two we have just signed to make the summer window a success.

If Newcastle can do that, then it will have been a very good summer for us – and then we need to start getting some good results next season.

Here’s hoping we can have a really good upcoming season – for a change.

Comments welcome.

Can anyone confirm something for me? I was about to go on a cautionary rant.

Now whilst I am happy and don’t wish to cast a grey cloud over what is one of the better days in our recent history, I was going to say I’d be very surprised to see more than one more coming in within the next few weeks.

Lest we forget that we are run by Mike Ashley and Lee Charnley and this means that we will likely need to sell before we buy.

Not so much for the fee’s received but for the quota of eligible players we can register in the PL. I was going to say that adding Mbemba (if we do manage to pull this off) would push us close to the limit but I forgot to realise that Mitrovic and Mbemba are U21. Does this mean they don’t have to be part of the 25 man squad? Is that still the rule?

I reckon though that we will likely want to sell and the next 3 weeks may see the return of negativity (likely I’ll partake in it) but I think the club would be right in trying to sell the Obertans, Gouffrans and Williamsons.

Shaqiri is the player we should be going for not some feyenoord winger we’ve never heard of with 3 goals and 4 assists

    The academy really needs sorting.

It is the last clearly broken vestige of the old regime.

Not knocking Beardsley as a man or a coach but a visionary he ain’t. He needs help. From a specialist with either a track record or a younger guy with a head full of ideas.

Players like Kemen should not be slipping through our fingers.

    WW…,
As much as we all want rid of him, I think we’ll have to be content with a Collo/Mbemba pairing. That still leaves us needing a goal scoring winger and RB cover. People are saying we won’t get that RB cover as we have Anita and STaylor. But that still leaves another two players to come in, where do you reckon.

We need more than a specific player. We need an idea.

We need a fighter, a leader, a cajoler, a comforter. Someone who embodies the spirit of the city and team.

    We don’t have that.

    Phillips
    Bolasie
    Gray (future)
    Janazuy (sp) – loan

if its boetius you mean ?

he is very young at 21 and still a far way off his top form but would imo be very very good competition for aarons and is far better than ober and co.

and at about 2mil would add depth to an area where we lack the most with our wingers seemingly unable to put a decent cross in.

A good start Ed? And getting people worked up?
27 million on two players? This is already out best summer ever, check the numbers if you doubt me.
And this doesn’t count the coaching overhaul.
We may not succeed, because football is that way, but we have shoen serious intent, no doubt. A real CB would be amazing.
    CL here we come.

Jean-Paul Boetius. Am impressed with wat I have seen. Dont know of Shaqri really wants to come to Toon. He refused to come to Stoke why come to us. Stoke finished higher than we did.

Bring Jean Paul polish him a little bit for 2m and we r good to go.

I was championing RB cover awhile ago mate but Mbemba has played his trade there rather well apparently and been pretty good from a few accounts I’ve heard and Janmatt is rather sturdy I wouldn’t be too upset if we tested the water until Jan

2 players after Mbemba? RW and another CB after that another ST (Austin if possible) would be my aims

Yes they have signed 2 first class players for sue, and iam so happy about that, but we need at least another 3 quality players and 2 of those players should be 2 center backs as our center backs are simply not premier league quality, also at no stage in Mick Ashelys interview did he say he was going to spend a stack of money, i think you must have been watching a different video interview of Mike Ashely than everyone else, but i would love to be proved wrong and he actually does spend a stack of money, but i very much doubt it to be honest. Howay the lads.

If we are selling kemen we better make sure the sell on fee is huge If Ac get him and he develops into a player !Its a shame a lot of our youngsters in the last few years have had Carver and Pardew to help them through … a bit of a dead end!

kemen is a strong tidy lad who can do a bit of everything.

has a lot of promise and it seems a lot of teams have spotted it ! is he near the first team ? a hell of a long way off for sure imo and i cant even see where his progression with us is.
where would he go on loan to improve him ? his style is very much german or prem league style and it wont be easy to loan him to those clubs.

for the risk factor alone i’d sell him but for no less than 3mil even though he is so young and untested tbh as he may just become a star.

    In defence of Beardsley….

He has been treated like an underling at that club for far too long by men who shouldn’t have been allowed to breathe the same oxygen.

If you are s sixteen year-old kid and you see a man who your dad speaks of with awe being treated like a gopher, it is bound to make you confused.
And maybe the you just do what others do.

Excellent signings so far but we need more, just hope nothing happens to Aarons as we have got both marveaux and Cabella out, hopefully de Jong will stay fit, we should concentrate at the back, 2 central defenders and a right back oh and another winger, still a little bit of work to do.

In terms of a winger, he’s literally amazing and quite cheap.
Some videos of him on youtube obviously and if you’re an FM fan, you’ll know doubt know him from that.
    Buy out of £4.8million apparently.

I might be wrong but what did Matt Phillips do in a struggling QPR last season? He’s done nothing for Scotland either.

This Boetius lad seems a better option, can play both wings or off a striker, bit of skill, pace, can cross and get assists. Played for Holland at every level and still only 21.
