Darlow, Bigirimana, Satka, Wijnaldum Start At Portland – Live Video

Portland Timbers (MLS)_logo.svgnufc emblem

Newcastle will play the last of their three games of the US tour tonight when they play the Portland Timbers at Providence Park.

This is the only MLS team Newcastle will play on the tour.

Head coach Steve McClaren has just announced his team for tonight’s game and it looks like Newcastle will give a lot of their youngsters and fringe players a game tonight, against a Portland team that will largely be made up of their second team.

Newcastle: Darlow, Bigirimana, Satka, Ferguson, Aarons, Abeid, Wijnaldum, Gouffran, Sissoko, Ayoze, Cisse
Subs: Woodman, Janmaat, Obertan, De Jong, Armstrong, Anita

That looks like Newcastle will play three at the back maybe in a 3-5-2 formation but Bigi, Satka and Ferguson are not very experienced..

It looks like they will be the beck three – and maybe McClaren is trying a different formation to see how the lads can adapt to it.

Only Sissoko and Cisse started the last game at Sacramento Republic, so McClaren wants everybody to get a game on this tour.

Fabricio Coloccini has an injured Achilles and Emmanuel Riviere has left the squad through injury and returned to Newcastle.

It would be good to get another win tonight, and we have one win and one loss so far in America.

You can watch the game live here.

    Ewwww Gouffran!

  • 2 honest fan // Jul 22, 2015 at 2:52 AM

    Tuff
Really he contributed the most important thing of all and that was goals
I agree he ain’t the best but he has a nack for getting goal when playing really badly so I think he could still come good personally

  • 3 lukes26 // Jul 22, 2015 at 2:53 AM

Wait, who are the CB’s? That lineup can’t be correct, unless Bigi’s playing CB?

  • 4 expatmag // Jul 22, 2015 at 2:57 AM

    TUFF
    From the previous thread.

It is our winter here and at my age, the last thing I want to do is travel a 200km round trip up to and from Melbourne and pay astronomical of sums of money to watch a bunch of show ponies playing for clubs I am not interested in, putting on what can only be described as a glorified training session.

Far too bloody cold, far too boring and far to far to travel. I prefer feet up in front of the fire with a nice glass of aussie red.

  • 5 lukes26 // Jul 22, 2015 at 2:58 AM

Soo..the T2 team is the reserves of the Portland Timbers.

So we’re playing the reserves of an MLS team

  • 6 Mister Tuff // Jul 22, 2015 at 3:00 AM

expat – agree with most of what you said -in respect of probably most players but probably not with Obertron – you cannot make silk purse from a sows’ ear.

honest fan – I suppose we’ll see in the next three weeks what Wallys plans are – if we get somebody who can accurately cross Cisse might benefit.
Think were still not finished on the striker front – but everything is in transition at the moment.
And at that off to the pit.

  • 7 lukes26 // Jul 22, 2015 at 3:01 AM

I guess their reserves team compete in the USL, so technically we’re playing a USL team

    3-4-3.

What a bizarre line up, is this mcclaren looking at a few squad players to see which he’ll dispense with? Wij hasn’t played much so makes sense, same with Perez, Aarons needs games as well. The other outfield players it could well be last chance saloon

  • 29 welshgeordie9 // Jul 22, 2015 at 3:46 AM

Get in there gini, good work by Aarons.

  • 30 lukes26 // Jul 22, 2015 at 3:46 AM

I think thats why we’re playing such a weak back three

    Well done Rolando

This could be a cricket score

  • 31 King Colback // Jul 22, 2015 at 3:46 AM

I’m watching on xbox no lag

  • 32 JDdubai // Jul 22, 2015 at 3:47 AM

Aarons down the wing, cross, Wijnaldum scores. Hopefully a taste of things to come..

1 defender in the lineup, means with the ball we should be keeping it easily.

Is Lascelles injured? He went off at halftime last match i think, thought he would have played this game too.

  • 33 Sazzer // Jul 22, 2015 at 3:48 AM

Maybe we don’t need a LB. Just leave left side to Aarons.

  • 34 corkypants // Jul 22, 2015 at 3:48 AM

Sissoko again, missing the ball. He really just gives off the impression he doesnt want to be here or that he gives the slightest fOck.

Conceding 3 with this defence is not surprising, especially with 2 from set pieces. But with the amount of midfielders and attackers we have in the line up i would have expected more going forward.

Are any of them defenders? Have a word with yourself mate its embrassing that you are even twisting about a daft preseason friendly where the defence is Ferguson, Satka, Bigi. That’s probably our 20th choice trio as a combination.

    4) Sissoko and cisse seem dont care – sell them both.

    5) Wiljandum got a good goal but other than that anonymous. (maybe playing with a useless gouffron alongside him)

Lubo Satka looks pants! Not impressed. We need defenders in it’s glaring obvious. We could also do with another creative midfielder be it a winger or an ACM. De Jong is injury prone and Cabella will probs play on the wing. We need someone that can ask questions of the opposition defence and open teams up and take players on. Wijnaldum is great but I think we could do with another similar. But first a couple of good defenders in please!!

  • 95 Online Guy // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:32 AM

  • 99 Sazzer // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:35 AM

The goals conceded came from 2 set pieces and a mistake from Satka.

Certainly not the end of the world.

  • 100 Bobbybee // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:35 AM

Need to keep a proper perspective. Can’t play the same players three times in a week during pre season without risking injuries. Darlow should’ve cut out goals 2, possibly 3 and Satko and Fergie are not capable of playing centre backs together. None of the back four will start in the PL. This is basically about fitness building, so people need to calm down. Mistakes at the back have resulted in goals, but they’re nothing like our real back four.

  • 101 JDdubai // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:36 AM

Really dont think you can blame Satka too much, he’s just a young kid with Bigi one side and Fergie the other…up against a big strong CF.

Only so much a kid can do but anyone who lists him as a CB in out squad for next season needs a head shake, he looks a good 2 seasons away from PL bench.

  • 102 Our Toon // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:36 AM

    Jd

Agree as an attacking force we could show more bit players are more focused on getting ready for the new season not busting a gut to win a meaningless pre season friendly which means diddly squat to how the season will pan out. Reading some of the comments you’d think we are crashing out of cup game.

It’s good the Wij is getting game time to improve fitness and an understanding with teammates, it’s good to have Aarons out there getting a run out, all these players need minutes.

We don’t have many CB’S so I have no issues with setting up like this, especially if certain players are carrying niggles. Imagine having to wait for the work permit of Chancer but losing Laschelles and other defenders before the 1st game.

  • 103 corkypants // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:37 AM

    Bigirimana-Satka-Ferguson-Aarons

Are you honestly surprised that we are losing? Only Aarons played first team games last season out of all of them!

In addition only Satka is in the correct position, Ferguson at CB? All 5ft9 of him, Aarons in LB? He is best further up the pitch, and Bigirimana is a midfielder. This defence was always going to be pants, McClaren must be trying to prove that we need CB’s. Otherwise, what’s the logic?

  • 107 JP...from The Rock // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:39 AM

We need to sell Cisse and Gouffran both offer nothing every time. Cisse goes missing for 80mins each match and Gouffran is a lot of huffing and piffing and does F All really apart from running around like a headless chicken.

The logic is to give all players minutes on this trip, 3 games in 1 week during preseason isn’t going to be about the best XI at all times. Use the squad and ensure injuries are minimised!!

  • 111 DeanToon88 // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:42 AM

Gouffran is such a pathetic player get shot of him please..

  • 112 jeraziah // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:43 AM

Sell or release Gouffran. He hardly makes a run. Lazy-ass whiner. Worthless.

    GOUFFRAN CAPTAIN??????????

  • 114 brklyngeordie // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:44 AM

just watched that 1st half boy that was hard to watch and few things ill take out of this is

    1. Sissoko looking best player so far which is encouraging cause he can be key player unless just trying to take it serious to draw move away?

2.Cisse looking ok but feel bad for anyone who has Gouffran to help

3.Perez is best as ST not a wing

4.Abeid Bigi and Ferguson not cut out for this club honestly

5.Satka can see potential there looks comfortable with ball at feet doesnt want to play hoof ball but his midfield not providing much options and is being reluctant to hoof but has got self into trouble few times by not opting to.

    6. Aarons looks fit but didnt like attitude after assisting goal doesnt seem to be team player and always looking for recognition or something head down and just work

7.Darlow 3rd keeper not ready for Prem

  • 118 Our Toon // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:48 AM

Yes Cisse offers nothing spot on….oh wait apart from the one thing that wins us games and that’s goals. Yes let’s sell the guy who scored 11 goals last year in 22 games, 11 were sub appearances.

Let’s keep the other 2 who did get involved in team build up and offered a little more to the team ethic like Riviere and Perez.

    Perez 36 games 7 goals
    Riviere 23 games 1 goal

Between them 59 games 8 goals

  • 119 JDdubai // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:51 AM

    Brooklyn

It just shows how people can see something differently.

I thought Sissoko looks like he doesnt give a toss at all and certainly wasnt the best player out there.

  • 120 woodnufc // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:52 AM

I’m sorry like but Satka is absolutely turd. I understand that he’s not playing with a reconigsed CB alongside him but he’s made a string of individual errors both first and second half. Poor from him, I was expecting better.

  • 121 The overrated Frenchman // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:53 AM

I liked what I saw in that first half. Only because it must have demonstrated to McClaren that definitively, beyond doubt, without argument, that a big chunk of this squad needs to go – any way possible and as soon as possible. I don’t care if you are being played out of position – you can still look like a proper footballer.

  • 122 JDdubai // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:53 AM

    GOUFFRAN AGAIN!!!!

FFS, stupid fould led to first goal. Now again stupid foul and they nearly score again. If you know they are much better in the air then dont give fouls away on the edge of the box.

    And our captain!

  • 123 DeanToon88 // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:56 AM

    Dean

Preseason friendlies aren’t a barometer for how a season will unfold, we lost 5-1 to orient with a strong side, that season we finished 5th in the prem.

Liverpool beat man utd last season in the US, they lost both league games though to man utd. Lamela was a world beater in preseason, couldn’t do nothing in the league, Jovetic was a goal machine in preseason last year, scored in the 2nd game then went missing for the rest of the season.

These friendlies mean absolutely nothing. Don’t take to much away from how a season will unravel buddy

  • 169 Altamullan // Jul 22, 2015 at 5:30 AM

Better second half players actually looked like premiership players obertan janmaat siem had some good touches and army looked good even tho didnt get the ball much i just hope the lad grows …rolando good think he thinks his just too cool for school atm dont think its bad attidude think he just knows we should be beating these easy so he feels he shouodnt celebrate his goals but we need to get himnto sign a at least 30k contract otherwise we could loose him like qpr did with sterling and they way it lools like we might with kemen :(….woodman good…..fergy looks capbable prem player ????

  • 174 mindcompressor // Jul 22, 2015 at 5:33 AM

I think McClaren done this defensive line on purpose, with bottom line – buy 2 CB otherwise I prefer to play Ferguson there than Williamson 😉

Gouffran, Cisse, Abeid completely useless. Sissoko bad attitude. Obertan gave much better change IMHO. Maybe he has less typical sports skills, but got better heart to play.

De Jong as playmaker – damn his visions are great. I think with time, he will be extraordinary. Bigi quite good as LB, maybe Janmaat and Chancel as CB?

This is first game of pre-season I watched and it was good to see our guys again on the pitch 🙂 Howay the lads 🙂

  • 175 calvinzolamakongo // Jul 22, 2015 at 5:34 AM

    JD Dubai

Just goes to show you how much attention I pay to friendlies can’t even remember what season they happened in or the score ahahaha.

As you say it’s all about how we go against Southampton, we do need a testing run out for the senior lads when they return, some tough pre season games that’ll ensure we step up a level or 2

  • 178 Altamullan // Jul 22, 2015 at 5:37 AM

Perez missed an opportunity to stake a claim/reduce chance of overspend on someone new. I was reminded of number of set piece goals conceded last season and need for presence in the box. Doesn’t need to be height, Mbemba is strong with great leap.

  • 179 Altamullan // Jul 22, 2015 at 5:42 AM

Aarons to Wijnaldum, goal. Could be first of many. What was your highlight?

  • 180 santoon // Jul 22, 2015 at 5:42 AM

sissoko didnt even jump for two of the corners

  • 181 kevymartins // Jul 22, 2015 at 5:44 AM

The commentator said a few times I wonder if this will worry Steve Mac that were gettig beat by a 3rd tier mls team. Thank God he didn’t get to see williamson.

Only thing that pissed me off about that match was the commentators were making pt 2 out to be world class an there beating a full NUFC team. They really didn’t have a clue though they kept calling Janmaat Janmart. Haha Aaron’s though top quality better than sterling no doubt just hope he is more loyal than him.

  • 182 Bobbybee // Jul 22, 2015 at 5:49 AM

Overall, it’s fair to say that none of the back five will start, so as all goals were defensive blunders, I’m not worrying on that front. Obertan surprised, having a decent game. Poor Arma, his runs get missed when they should be looking for his runs into the channel. That will improve. Aarons sparkled and De Jong showed his class. Third game in a week, not sure what was expected. Colchester beat WHU and Salisbury beat Bournemouth today, but they won’t be flapping either. By the time we play the german munch-bunch we’ll have a much better idea where we stand. There are no negatives to take from pre season friendlies, it’s purely about getting match fit and buying into a new philosophy.

  • 183 JP...from The Rock // Jul 22, 2015 at 5:51 AM

Give Aarons a new improved. contract ASAP. He was our most creative and classy outlet in the match. Was always a threat and never fails to impress every time I see him play. Why the hell we haven’t already signed him up long term is beyond me.

It.was obvious who the deadwood was from these matches.

Gouffran, cisse, willo, abeid. More will show up but these are glaringly obvious should be nowhere near the team.

  • 184 The overrated Frenchman // Jul 22, 2015 at 5:55 AM

Gouffran is so consistent – always the worst player on the pitch, any time, anywhere. Ferguson, Abeid, Satko, Bigi – best of luck for the future lads, sorry it didn’t work out here. Cisse and Sissoko – any reasonable offers accepted. Darlow cemented his position as fourth choice keeper.

  • 185 Altamullan // Jul 22, 2015 at 5:56 AM

Well said BobbyB, voice of reason. I am pleased it didn’t stay 4-1 though! Meaningless, as the score should be, that would have been a bump back down to earth, following the excitement of the signings and hints if an exciting new playing style.

  • 186 Bobbybee // Jul 22, 2015 at 6:02 AM

Altamullen, you’re not wrong about the final score lol. That said, we won’t concede goals like that again will we? Too many people read too much into what was basically a run out for the fringe players. You can already see how the more senior players are playing how macca wants them to. Nothing to worry about imo.

  • 187 Jail for Ashley // Jul 22, 2015 at 6:04 AM

    Bobbybee,
If it’s fair to say that those back five won’t start why are they playing together so close to the season beginning. It is very worrying that he keeps playing Bigi az a RB and Ferguson shouldn’t be anywhere near the squad.

  • 188 The overrated Frenchman // Jul 22, 2015 at 6:06 AM

The scoreline might be meaningless, true enough, but the fundamental lack of ability and application shown by too many of our players is not, surely?

  • 189 Jail for Ashley // Jul 22, 2015 at 6:09 AM

If they go to all the effort of making these two trophy signings and don’t sort out tge defence then the policy hasn’t changed at all, only that they’re spending more to make more.

  • 190 scout // Jul 22, 2015 at 6:10 AM

People saying the score matters? You’ve obviously never done a pre season before.
Youll see a more settled side back in England.

  • 191 Altamullan // Jul 22, 2015 at 6:11 AM

    Morning Jail,
Guessing it probably answers some questions seeing fringe players in the 1st team. You don’t need to see more experienced players, other than in training; they’re more likely to be the same in the spotlight/hot seat. I didn’t see much in defence that gave me any hope of even reliable cover for first choice positions.

  • 192 Bobbybee // Jul 22, 2015 at 6:16 AM

Jail, maybe because he promised to have a look at everyone and three games in a week, you can’t risk overdoing it and starting the season with a load of muscle strains. Seriously, these games mean nothing, other than getting players fitter. We’ll never concede like that once the team is finished. Like I say, Salisbury beating Bournemouth is far worse on paper, but it would never happen in a proper game. It’s simply about seeing who can – and more importantly who can’t – play pass and move. He’ll have learned more from that than if we’d put out our best eleven and walked it. Give it time mate, it’ll work out.

  • 193 Altamullan // Jul 22, 2015 at 6:18 AM

Just came across image of John C pleadingly gurning whilst holding up Coloccini’s letter….Suddenly feel very relieved we’re not there anymore!
