Newcastle fans will have been heartened last night – not by the overall display of Newcastle or our patched up defense, but the sparkling form of winger Rolando Aarons.
The youngster scored a great goal with an overhead bicycle kick in the second half, and then followed that up with a second goal within the minute, when he quickly controlled a loose ball outside the penalty area, and then hit it into the roof of the net to bring Newcastle back to 4-3 with about 14 minutes to play against Portland Timbers.
Rolando Aarons – to sign new deal at Newcastle?
There were some big clubs interested in the 19 year-old last season, but the youngster had a lot of problems with hamstring injuries and only played a handful of games for us during the season, but he looks as good as he was last season in pre-season at this time – brilliant!
Rolando has only one year left on his contract, so most fans would have thought we need to sign this lad up to a long term contract – after watching his brilliance last night.
But not just to protect our interests financially in case the likes of Liverpool or Arsenal come a calling.
We need to keep him at Newcastle, as Steve McClaren and the Board try to build a Newcastle team that can actually win something and finish in the top eight of the Premier League.
We also need to do that with our other top youngsters like Adam Armstrong and Freddie Woodman as two good examples.
There’s good news today that Aarons has been offered a long term contract by Newcastle, and its expected to be five years and of course he will get a wage increase from what he’s earning now – and hopefully it will be a real attempt by Newcastle to keep the lad on Tyneside.
Rolando has been at Newcastle for three years now, and he has made excellent progress since he was surprisingly released by Bristol City.
With Steve McClaren renowned for bringing young players through a club – we can look forward – hopefully – to seeing Rolando be a star man for Newcastle in this coming season, which he promised to be last season before all those injuries he picked up.
That’s another reason why Newcastle must get a handle on what’s causing the club to finish top of the Injury League every season.
It will be good news indeed if Rolando signs his new long term deal – very soon.
Just in case – by an off-chance – you haven’t seen those two goals by Rolando – here they are – and the commentators are impressed.
