Newcastle To Sign Up And Retain Their Top Youngsters

4:18 pm, Wednesday, July 22nd, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 68 Comments

Newcastle fans will have been heartened last night – not by the overall display of Newcastle or our patched up defense, but the sparkling form of winger Rolando Aarons.

The youngster scored a great goal with an overhead bicycle kick in the second half, and then followed that up with a second goal within the minute, when he quickly controlled a loose ball outside the penalty area, and then hit it into the roof of the net to bring Newcastle back to 4-3 with about 14 minutes to play against Portland Timbers.

Rolando Aarons – to sign new deal at Newcastle?

There were some big clubs interested in the 19 year-old last season, but the youngster had a lot of problems with hamstring injuries and only played a handful of games for us during the season, but he looks as good as he was last season in pre-season at this time – brilliant!

Rolando has only one year left on his contract, so most fans would have thought we need to sign this lad up to a long term contract – after watching his brilliance last night.

But not just to protect our interests financially in case the likes of Liverpool or Arsenal come a calling.

We need to keep him at Newcastle, as Steve McClaren and the Board try to build a Newcastle team that can actually win something and  finish in the top eight of the Premier League.

We also need to do that with our other top youngsters like Adam Armstrong and Freddie Woodman as two good examples.

There’s good news today that Aarons has been offered a long term contract by Newcastle, and its expected to be five years and of course he will get a  wage increase from what he’s earning now – and hopefully it will be a real attempt by Newcastle to keep the lad on Tyneside.

Rolando has been at Newcastle for three years now, and he has made excellent progress since he was surprisingly released by Bristol City.

With Steve McClaren renowned for bringing young players through a club – we can look forward – hopefully – to seeing Rolando be a star man for Newcastle in this coming season, which he promised to be last season before all those injuries he picked up.

That’s another reason why Newcastle must get a handle on what’s causing the club to finish top of the Injury League every season.

It will be good news indeed if Rolando signs his new long term deal – very soon.

Just in case – by an off-chance – you haven’t seen those two goals by Rolando – here they are – and the commentators are impressed.

Comments welcome.

Well there is a better chance he will sign it now rather than when Pardew or Carver were at the helm

  • 2 magicbus // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:24 PM

Must be an improved one then to the last derisory one offered even though he hadn’t played for nearly all the season

  • 3 Belfast // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:31 PM

I think it’s best to give him a decent contract. The likes of Liverpool and Co will no doubt be in his agents ear offering x y and z.

  • 4 Magpie Season // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:31 PM

I don’t know mate. The whole Pardew issue confuses me. He was able to convince Cabaye to join Palace. Him alone. Any top 6 club in the top European Leagues would have wanted Cabaye.

Pardew has some pulling power. Damn.

As for Carver, I would think not even Ali Dia being offered 250k per week would have signed under him.

  • 5 TudorCrisps // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:32 PM

I hope so, If Sterling is worth 49 million Mike must be rubbing his hands with the prospects off Aarons

  • 6 Magpie Season // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:33 PM

By the way, who was it that brought Aarons here from Bristol? Was it Carr?

  • 7 swemag // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:33 PM

Finally a link between us and Shaquiri, very welcome. Now make it happen Charnley.

Just a rumour, but one can dream. Would provide service for Mitrovic.

  • 8 Magpie Season // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:34 PM

Of course, need to upgrade that ‘under soil heating’ again.

  • 9 Mr Magpie // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:36 PM

I dont think Cabaye needed much convincing by Pardew as it looks like he has gone so he can live in London, earn more at palace than anyone else was prepared to pay him & his only desire appears to be making sure he is in the french team for the euro’s.

  • 10 will die for the toon army // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:37 PM

Tying him up will b easy but Is he ready for the big challenge. Am scared the pressure wld be too much.

  • 11 Shadow_Shearer // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:37 PM

I would be happy to offer twenty or thirty thousand a week. Our biggest prospect by country mile. When he plays well, he gets the whole team going. Influences the team more than de jong

  • 12 TudorCrisps // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:38 PM

Too right Magpie mate, that and the new sports direct signage around the ground needs paid for

  • 13 TudorCrisps // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:39 PM

“when he plays well” I don’t think I’ve seen him play bad, he should be offered more than what collos on easy

  • 14 ToonAndy // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:41 PM

If we managed to get Shaquiri in I would start to become very excited. I know our main goal now is to sign CBs but what a player! Rocket of a shot, rapid, strong, has desire to win, fuel to burn. Him and arrons either side of siem de Jong, behind Mirtovic …

  • 15 GeordieTwo // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:43 PM

We still have the cabbages though. The vegetables at the back. And Schteve played Ferguson as a central defender in Portland? Ahahahahahaha. Brilliant tactics Schteve. If you don’t want to play on artificial surfaces don’t come to the US on tour with the club. Ridiculous behavior from the club once again.

  • 16 Jib // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:43 PM

If you ever wondered what the words to Blaydon Races were in Italian

  • 17 GeordieTwo // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:45 PM

No team with Saylor and Willo in it can be considered a contender for a top 8 position Schteve. Think about it a bit and try harder Lee.

  • 18 GeordieTwo // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:47 PM

Fong the cabbages for the sweet baby Jesus I say.

  • 19 Our Toon // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:47 PM

Agreed let’s agree to disagree, after all we are 9 years into the 5 year plan.

Is this Shakiri link real or is it lazy journalism?

  • 20 JamesToon // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:48 PM

£12million is a bargain for Shaqiri

  • 21 GeordieTwo // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:49 PM

Take them on the pitch and fong them. Go to the States and then pretend you didn’t know what surfaces you would have to play on? What a load of bollocks. Put a farcical group out to play in front of supporters who came to support the club? Shameful as usual.

  • 22 JamesToon // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:49 PM

Can anyone link me to lee ryders article that’s on about an unnamed “exciting” player

  • 23 GeordieTwo // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:50 PM

It’s lazy journalism as usual Our Toon. Get a bloody decent CB in straight away Lee. We need to defend as well as attack you pinhead.

  • 24 GeordieTwo // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:51 PM

We have many unnamed exciting players on our radar screens JamesToon. Which one did you want to read about? Lee can make up some rumours for you at the drop of a hat.

  • 25 Jib // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:53 PM

    You are wrong.
    Miles out of touch.
Ridiculous behaviour by Portland ,insulting us by playing their U23’s against a Premiership side.
So although Steve gave the artificial surface excuse , those in the know , and Portland , are aware the insult was thrown back in their faces and we still nearly managed a draw.

  • 26 Shadow_Shearer // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:54 PM

I reckon cabella has the potential to be as good as aarons, but cabella doesn’t have the same desire in him.

  • 27 SuperShearer // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:54 PM

Rumour on Twitter bubbling that us and Everton are in for Shaqiri.

  • 28 hibbit // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:54 PM

geordie 2…….Mc was against a US tour from taking the job …..someone said on here earlier that SD are about to open shops in the US if that true there’s your answer

  • 29 Shadow_Shearer // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:58 PM

Would pardew has played his main players on that pitch last night??

I seem to recall him putting Hba on a pitch that injuried him for a full season.

  • 30 TacoFlavoredKisses ForMyBen-arfa // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:58 PM

Shaquiri is supposed to be a real jerk and thats why hes bounced around so much. WE dont need a clubhouse douche. Pass.

  • 31 lukes26 // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:58 PM

Some of the garbage on here is ridiculous

Cabaye would not be earning more at CP than other clubs, they don’t have that kind of cash

Cabaye wanted to play, he no doubt trusts Pardew and was probably given assurances that he would play

I know fans don’t like Pardew, but it seems the players always did. You don’t hear anything bad from players who left the club or the current squad

The only exception was Ben Arfa & who cares what he has to say about anything

  • 32 Pardews Priceless Bulls#*t // Jul 22, 2015 at 5:01 PM

Christ. When did g2 get so aggressive. I remember him being a reasonably level headed, if passionate, supporter

  • 33 ls // Jul 22, 2015 at 5:02 PM

Hope we aren’t in for shaqiri. Decent and promising player but not what we need at the moment and not sure if he is cut out for premier league

    Shadow_Shearer // Jul 22, 2015 at 4:58 PM

exactly! thats why im begining to love schteve! First he came out and said the us tour was a bad idea. Then he put his money where his mouth is and sat the injury prone players. He realized that beating a 3rd tier team means nothing. IN addition, hes only help the campaign to bring in more defenders by have the team leak goals like a sieve

  • 36 Jamseyd24 // Jul 22, 2015 at 5:03 PM

Never seen this Shaquiri play, can he be that good when none of the so called big clubs have been in for him??? Then again you could say that about our recent signing. I see the chronicle are calling Mbemba our new boy already. lol

  • 37 Our Toon // Jul 22, 2015 at 5:05 PM

Aye thought it was booty chatter

Taco – Shakiri joined bayern from basle, he left munich because he wanted 1st team football, he was always behind robben and ribery. At inter they have to many players which is why him and Santon are being flogged.

  • 38 Jib // Jul 22, 2015 at 5:05 PM

If you watch NUFCtv since SM has arrived , the players are very diplomatic when interviewed but it is clear they think McClaren is light years ahead with his training methods.

  • 39 Pardews Priceless Bulls#*t // Jul 22, 2015 at 5:06 PM

I coyld imagine shaquiri wanting to be guaranteed a first team place wherever he plays so becomes a pillock at the bigger clubs when there are names above him

  • 40 TacoFlavoredKisses ForMyBen-arfa // Jul 22, 2015 at 5:07 PM

    Our Toon

listen, i never met the guy, but i had a similar conversation with guys that followed italy and germany much more than i do and they said thats the deal with him. Plus when he did that rip off the kyle irving commercial there were a ton of posts on how the kids were the only ones that like him because all his teamates dont.

  • 41 Our Toon // Jul 22, 2015 at 5:08 PM

Nothing to do with his attitude. Mancini put up with Balotelli you telling me he couldn’t handle Shakiri?

  • 42 nightfa11 // Jul 22, 2015 at 5:09 PM

shaquiri is quality..a bit short..but ok..

anyway..for a guy who’s only 23 he does move alot (attitude issues?).. this summer will move to his 4th club.. but the good side of it is that he adjusted to every league..

  • 43 Our Toon // Jul 22, 2015 at 5:10 PM

Munich don’t spend money on players with attitude problems and he wouldn’t have lasted as long as he did if he has such issues at a club like that

  • 44 Toonces // Jul 22, 2015 at 5:10 PM

Can’t understand how anyone can be upset about us playing Portland Timbers development side last night and not their first team. The press release on June 2nd, when the game was announced, said it was Timbers 2 as NUFC’s opponents.

  • 45 TacoFlavoredKisses ForMyBen-arfa // Jul 22, 2015 at 5:11 PM

Balotelli is crazy, but well liked.

Shakiri is supposed to be an a-hole.

Different type of problem to manage.

  • 46 nightfa11 // Jul 22, 2015 at 5:11 PM

didnt pardew had fallouts with ba, hba, colo, carr..cos of his playing style?

  • 47 JamesToon // Jul 22, 2015 at 5:12 PM

The only reason cabaye has gone to palace is because he knows he’s be a guaranteed starter and so that he can get back in the France national team

  • 48 ls // Jul 22, 2015 at 5:14 PM

Don’t think shaq has a problem with his attitude. Its just that he isn’t a winger but all the clubs want to play him there. In Munich Heinckes really wanted him but then got replace by Pep. Additionally a injury threw him back further in the pecking order thats why he wanted to move. Podolski and him were frenetically welcomed in mailand by the fans and the club but just weren’t as good as hoped.

  • 49 nightfa11 // Jul 22, 2015 at 5:15 PM

the thing is if we sign shaquiri we also need to sign a striker (who will be a sub), but if we sign berahino, we have both positions covered (no unhappy strikers).. adn i cant see us spending 20 mio on defenders, 12 on shaquiri and 15 on austin..

  • 50 Terry // Jul 22, 2015 at 5:16 PM

Absolutely, you’re not gonna get players slagging pardew off in public whether he’s left Newcastle or not

  • 51 LewSpi v2.0 // Jul 22, 2015 at 5:16 PM

I’m unsure where people are getting that Shaqiri moves around a lot from?

    FC Basel 11 years
    Bayern 3 years
And now Inter since January – where obviously something has gone wrong

  • 52 Jib // Jul 22, 2015 at 5:17 PM

Our Toon -Munich don’t spend money on players with attitude problems – WHAT ? have you heard of Michael Ballack ?
XS started playing for FC Basel at 17 , that prolly ruined him plus little guy syndrome.

  • 53 lukes26 // Jul 22, 2015 at 5:19 PM

    Thats what I said

Steve might be a better manager. I dont know

You’re right about Colo, actually happened twice

  • 54 ITUNDERASHELL // Jul 22, 2015 at 5:21 PM

Arons will sign because ashley has had the fear of God put up him by those supporters who would not renew season tickets. Ashley has to show ambition and he looks as though he is doing precisely that.
mark my words Aron is going to be a big, big star if he stays level headed and sees the brilliance being nrought into the club to aid his development.
Forget Shiqiri and go for the boy from holland eith one full cap and only 2 £million then use the rest to get the CB from Tunisia, now he looks like a real centre half and leader.
l would not buy Austin, why hinder Perez development?

did the top 6 also offer 30 yr old cabaye 100k a week?

Cabaye preferred London and Palace were the only club in for him. He needs game time and Percy will play him when Cabaye says. Few players will run down their previous manager, but they must have known he was a bell end !

  • 67 sfbay_toon // Jul 22, 2015 at 9:04 PM

My son & I attended the Sacramento match and I also watched last night’s Portland match. A couple of observations about Rolando Aarons:

    1) He is in tip-top physical form — his conditioning was good, and during a post-match workout he stripped off his jersey. If there’s an ounce of fat on his body, I didn’t see it. (Same observation for Ayoze Perez.)

    2) He has natural speed, lots of it. In workouts and most of all in the game, he was able to separate from his marker dramatically. Hard to tell without a stopwatch, but IMO he’s in the same sprint final as Sterling or Walcott.

    3) He is able to create space on the wing (both with speed and slick handling), but I didn’t see good service from him. IMO, he needs to keep working on this. Having a big target in front of goal like Mitrovic will help!

    4) He can score. See videos above!

A separate note: Steve McClaren, Paul Simpson and all the players we met were quite gracious and glad to see NUFC fans in Sacramento. My 12-yr old son was over the moon – he got photos with many of his heroes and a home kit covered with signatures. We’ll have to get him another to wear, since the signed one went straight up on his wall! Thanks to NUFC for the visit!
