    How was Abeid ,any good?

  • 3 TheToonKing // Jul 22, 2015 at 6:32 AM

Satka and Bigi were really bad. Not sure why Big was playing right winger though…but he was skinned every time almost it came down on his side.

  • 4 ilovetoon8788 // Jul 22, 2015 at 6:33 AM

Not so bothered about the score. Only thing that bothers me is the quality of our defence.

We can have a world class midfield and strikers. But if the current crop of defenders are our first team, we’ll be fighting relegation all season. Fact.

  • 5 TheToonKing // Jul 22, 2015 at 6:33 AM

@mickalfas he was decent. put his body around well, but also lost it a few times. average performance from him.

  • 6 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 22, 2015 at 6:39 AM

So the only one of our back 4 who was actually in the right position was Satka? We score 3 but concede 4? Well then, if that does not highlight our chronic desperation for defenders, nothing will! It’s nice to put a few goals in, while also sending signals to those at the top as to what we need. 2CBs and RB cover please!

  • 7 lesh // Jul 22, 2015 at 6:40 AM

The line-up illustrated our lack of quality in the squad and the need to spend in that area was proven by the score.

So, come on Mr Charnley, let’s see some urgency in the pursuit of the two CBs – at the least – we need.

  • 8 Jail for Ashley // Jul 22, 2015 at 6:40 AM

Ferguson has struggled to make the bench at a poor Birmingham side, why is he being persisted with. They’ve said we’re lookin at three transfer windows, there is so much guff in the team and so many contracts running out this season, are they going to spend 50M each window ?

  • 9 Ron Knee // Jul 22, 2015 at 6:43 AM

It’s the first time we’ve scored three goals since January, according to The Chronic.

  • 10 lesh // Jul 22, 2015 at 6:45 AM

I’d like to think that when McClaren referred to three windows, that he was talking about three windows to overhaul the squad aiming for top quality players to take us into ECL place contention

I don’t think he meant three windows to get what we need now to get that eighth-plus spot – I hope!

  • 11 Jail for Ashley // Jul 22, 2015 at 6:46 AM

If it’s one or the other I’d carry on with Collo and buy a decent young RB along with Mbemba, if I was in charge of the budget it would be all three 🙂

  • 12 Bornandraised // Jul 22, 2015 at 6:48 AM

I’m not going to get worked up about a defense made up of players that are not going to be on the roster giving up 2 set piece goals and a turnover goal.

What does have me worried is that Sissoko can’t make a simple pass, unless it is to himself. Maybe we should play him at forward.

  • 13 Jail for Ashley // Jul 22, 2015 at 6:49 AM

    Ron Knee,
I think we scored four goals or more something like six times in Pardews four years, three of them was with CHs team and one against a nine man Stoke.

  • 14 Jail for Ashley // Jul 22, 2015 at 6:51 AM

    Born and raised,
Like I said for me it’s a worry that this type of team is being played at all. Bigi should be out on loan in the Championship in his true position, not trying to bodge him into a RB, it could ruin him.

  • 15 Ron Knee // Jul 22, 2015 at 6:54 AM

    Not exactly prolific!

  • 16 LGFUAD21 // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:01 AM

I’m not concerned about the result at all.

We played a ridiculous defence due to the poor pitch plus pre season is time to experiment.

You don’t want to be blitzing teams all pre season. You want to be ensuring that the style of play and fitness is correct.

Teams that go all out in pre season tend to falter halfway through the actual season. You ideally want to be hitting top gear around november time if you want to finish the season strongly.

That’s why it’s so amazing when teams like chelsea manage a full season at full pelt.

  • 17 Magpie Season // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:02 AM

Shouldn’t be too concerned yet. I remember season we finished fifth our pre-season didn’t go well.

Anyway, one thing we can take away from this loss is that we must keep Aarons fit.

  • 18 Blofal // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:04 AM

Sign Aarons up to a long contract NOW!

  • 19 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:05 AM

Just watched the goals on the vid. The second half team looked slightly better (and it won 2-1). Darlow needs a bit of help with his decision making, but it cant be easy playing behind 7 MFs and a 5th choice cb from the start. When we are on the ball, we mostly look decent, except when goffy lumbers around with it. Did he get awarded HBAs pie alocation??? We did play better 2nd half from the bits i looked at, but the damage was done.

  • 20 Blofal // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:06 AM

I wouldn’t be surprised if we played such a ridiculously inexperienced defence in a 3-5-2 because McClaren wanted Darlow and Woodman to be tested.

  • 23 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:10 AM

Still say richards would have been a good.signing. When fit, he is very good at both CB and RB. Better than what we have at CB and slots in at RB very comfortably if janmaat is injured.

  • 24 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:10 AM

Not fussed on the result, but I think McClaren has to take some of the blame for the conceding of 4 goals there. I fully understand, and agree that first team players shouldn’t be playing every game, they all need to build fitness, but to drop three lads in for their first starts of the tour – 2 who aren’t really defenders is just pointless. That isn’t going to be a back line we ever use – I hope – but one of them, or two at most alongside more senior players may be. Saylor has hardly played, he should have started alongside Satka, bring him off at half time, if needs be and bring someone else on.

The way McClaren did it will not have benefitted them. Fitness wise, maybe, but pre season is also about building confidence and team cohesion. McClaren’s selection didn’t help that.

Satka should be out on loan this year, along with Sterry, Woodman, Arma, Roberts, Kemen, Bigi and probably a few others. None of them should be getting first team games here until at the earliest January, once they have got good experience on loan.

Ferguson shouldn’t be anywhere near. If Ferguson is named in the 25 man squad it would only demonstrate that the club has regressed at left back.

Anyway, another game done, a few more run outs for a few players. Aarons seems the only one who received praise from everyone. When we get back to England we should start to see the team taking shape, but reinforcements look required asap.

  • 25 Sazzer // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:10 AM

Score doesn’t matter and I don’t think the goals we conceded were all that bad.

Bigi at fault at 2 goals in position he’s not used to.

And Sissoko and Gouffran are a fault at the set pieces because that had to go up against the opponents CB:s.

  • 26 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:11 AM

What was the deal with the pitch? Noticed a couple of people comment on it?

  • 27 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:15 AM

i would argue we only played one defender. Fergy is a LW imo. But you are right, protecting players from that pitch is one thing, fitness wise, but mcc made a few wrong calls last night/this morning. I don’t blame him.too much though, we are desperately short of options at the back.

  • 28 Altamullan // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:16 AM

Five midfielders? Or five MFs? Or five MFing MFs? 🙂

  • 29 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:16 AM

It was one of those 3g type pitches.

  • 32 optimistic prime // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:18 AM

Pleased to see SDJ looking more energetic and moving freely even if it was only 15m.

Sissoko was terrible again, he can’t even pass 5yards without losing it, not impressed at all. People slate Obertan but Sissoko isn’t much better.

I agree with lg the selection didn’t help at all, hopefully after some of their displays he’ll be looking to get rid of a few who just aren’t good enough.

Slightly worried he didn’t play any of our Top CB ( 😉 ) why be to worried about Willo if we’re signing replacements, unless deals to get rid are in the pipeline.

  • 33 Altamullan // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:21 AM

Lol, some of them MFs look good, damn good! Just need more MFing defenders!

  • 34 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:22 AM

A 3g pitch? Okay, so that would be a good reason to leave Saylor out at this stage in his comeback. But if Lascelles and Willo are fit, then one of them could have played, or a half each. Give Bigi a half in midfield, half at full back (if that is really McClaren’s thoughts) and swap Goofy and Janmaat to allow it to happen.

Why are we arranging matches against reserve sides on 3g pitches anyway? This tour has been poorly organised, pleased McClaren has already spoken out against the tour earlier on. I get the club want to strengthen their brand, but it shouldn’t be detrimental to the football. If we can’t get games with a decent profile on decent pitches then we should be looking elsewhere for pre season. Hopefully McClaren will have a bigger input deciding next year.

  • 35 Jail for Ashley // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:24 AM

    Morning Altamullan.

  • 36 optimistic prime // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:24 AM

Just reading SM saying he couldn’t play any of our CBS due to the type of injurys they pick up.

In other words our CBS are made of glass

  • 37 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:24 AM

Fergie is a league 1 footballer imo. Would be better for all concerned if we allowed him to leave on a free to get regular game time somewhere.

  • 38 Jail for Ashley // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:27 AM

Those posts of yours are too refreshingly honest. You’ll have the new era optomists kicking your front door in to make arrests.

  • 39 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:28 AM

Yeah, just read that. 6 of 7 who can’t play on that surface…. Why on earth are we arranging matches for this surface then?? Others had to pay longer and were put at more risk then he would have liked because of the type of injuries they get.

Ludicrous and incompetence from those who organised the tour, clearly with building the brand ahead of the footballing requirements of pre season.

  • 40 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:29 AM

Lucky I live far enough away then!!

  • 41 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:29 AM

As I wrote yesterday before last nights game…
    TOP SIX – NO CHANCE!!!!!!
Maybe top ten and a cup run.
We don’t have strength in depth and need to sort out/change of luck for injuries.
Decent forward line/striker now to pick from – Mitrovic, Cisse, Perez,
Decent midfield/striker – De Jong, Wijnaldum, Aarons
Decent midfield – Sissoko, Tiote, Colback
Defence – Jaanmat – after that rest poor not up to premiership standard
Goalkeeper – good shot stopper but command of six yard box and distribution – poor
Need two or three top defenders to be a top six team because our goals against column since we came back into the premiership has been shocking.

  • 42 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:31 AM

Last season I said the squad was good enough for 10th-12th. I think that was easily achievable. With the additions so far, Id revise it to 8th to 10th. We need a few more bodies in and a few out to be aiming top 6 or higher at the moment.

  • 43 Magpie Season // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:33 AM

Anyone know what sort of wages both Wijnaldum & Mitrovic are on?

Is Colo still the club’s highest earner at 80k?

  • 44 LewSpi v2.0 // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:33 AM

I understand we have a brand to build in far away lands, however I can never understand why we don’t build the brand in the countries we want to haul players from.

It’s well documented that Newcastle raid the European markets for cheaper deals. Makes sense to raise your profile in the likes of Holland, France and Belgium, surely?

A few teams have gone their this year I’ve noticed.

  • 45 optimistic prime // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:34 AM

Organised and NUFC don’t really go together, definatley a strange decision.

Shouldn’t it of affected a few who he actually played?
Why didn’t Lascalles play, Is he made of glass.
The whole line up and reasons for it were a bit odd to me.

  • 46 hibbit // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:34 AM

  • 47 Jail for Ashley // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:35 AM

What do you think about Bigi keep being used as a RB, I can only think he plans to use Anita regularly in midfield and is looking for options, maybe he knows we’re not buying a new RB. Somebody else was asking the other day who the academy RB is, there obviously isn’t one if Bigi is being used ???

  • 48 Sazzer // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:36 AM

    Lilongwe Geordie
I agree with you. McClarens way so far have been a bit strange.

I would have had players compete for positions a lot more and tried different constellations and perhaps formations in the early stages before choosing starting eleven for the later stages of the pre-season.

  • 49 deeps // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:36 AM

  • 51 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:38 AM

Yes it was a strange choice of last fixture. Dont think SM was keen to go in the first place. I wonder if he feels the more useful freindlies are still to come. After all he did call the trip “a necesary evil”.

  • 52 Jail for Ashley // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:38 AM

    Great now proper RB ffs.

  • 53 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:41 AM

We have sent our second string to Holland.

Problem is, when you talk about building our brand, you mean building up support in countries that offer potential footballing benefits, over commercial. The club are looking at building commercial benefits over footballing benefits.

Many clubs do so I don’t have an issue per sé, but we organise games against minnows that draw small crowds. We organised three games, one against a decent side, one against a lower league side, one against a reserve side.

Man U last year played, Roma, LA Galaxy, Inter Milan, and Real Madrid. That is how to build a brand. We would struggle to attract them, but there are a tier below who we could play to build up our profile in the US – Galaxy wouldn’t be out of our reach.

  • 54 expatmag // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:41 AM

    Exactly my thoughts.

I would say that other than fitness, this USA tour gas possibly been a complete waste of time.

We would have been better off playing lower level teams in England or Scotland.

  • 55 Toonfan8 // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:45 AM

I cant see a point to play against reserve side on that poor surface? Who the hell organised this match? That person should be fired right now, we are crying that we have many injuries and we organise match on 3g pitch…Tour in Holland or Germany would be much better than this….

  • 56 Belfast // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:49 AM

Top six? Haha. Back down to earth with a bang today then.

Expat these tours are always a waste of time. It’s all about money and very few managers like going on them.

  • 57 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:49 AM

Bigi isn’t a right back. End of. Satka and Sterry would be better off playing there. Mbabu was meant to be the right back coming through, but shock of shocks, under the development guidance of Beardsley, didn’t develop.

Either that is where McClaren sees him, I can’t believe that, or he is getting game time so he can be fit and match ready when he goes out on loan. We have been linked with Holgate who is a young right back at Doncaster I think. Man U are interested and he has spent a month there on trial though.

Yeah, in the early pre season games we should be rotating players more. I was very surprised with the line up he put out for the second game, and the lack of changes made to it until late on. Get everyone ready, and by the final 2 games of pre season narrow it down to making decisions.

I do think that some have been given more time, as McClaren is deciding if he wants them to stay but it shouldn’t rule the pre season.

Yeah, McClaren complained about it public before we went. I’m pleased he did that. Hopefully next season we will see a far better pre season tour.

  • 58 the broons // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:50 AM

sign mbemba and adenabour up and, Team should look like this

    Janmaat Adenabour Mbemba Haidaira
    Tiote Anita
    wijanldum De jong Aaarons

Subs: Darlow, S taylor, Dummet, Colback, Sissoko, Cabella, Perez (plenty of cover there)

Reasons for starting tiot ahead of colback, gives the team that added protection that colback doesn’t which we quite evidently need. Wijanldum drifts wide and central.
Mitrovic you stay in the box, aarons, haidaira, janmaat you get the crosses into him and he’ll do the rest.

Am quite confident that team would be easy top half team with plenty of cover.

  • 59 LewSpi v2.0 // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:51 AM

    Haha I’ve completely overlooked it haven’t I.

Exactly, you’d think if they were concentrating on commercial there’d be a load of high profile games, not playing cheap reserve teams. Seems strange. Reminds me of those Chryslers that look exactly like Rolls Royces. “Look what I can afford to do” No mate, it’s still a cheap car and everyone knows it, it just looks big and posh. If you’re gonna do it, do it right ffs.

  • 60 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:53 AM

I think Mbemba is going to cover the right back slot. He can play there. He also has played most of his international games as a defensive midfielder.

I think you can wave a specialist right back goodbye now!

  • 61 Jail for Ashley // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:57 AM

Opening soon. A SD in Milwaukee.

  • 62 Bobbybee // Jul 22, 2015 at 7:58 AM

Macca’s explanation makes so much sense in a game where the result is of zero importance. Let’s remember, he’s already criticised the tour as not one he would have chosen. I’d sooner lose 6-0 than come away with half the side carrying injuries. Looks like Mbemba is on his way over and Macca can see where the problems are without every other post pointing out the bleeding obvious. Let him take his time and get the right players, because we’ve signed too many players just to make up numbers in the past, putting us where we were last season. Eight years of underfunding simply can’t be put right in one window, he’s not a miracle worker. We’ll go into the season with a decent team and then strengthen again in January.

  • 63 Jail for Ashley // Jul 22, 2015 at 8:01 AM

So he builds up a decent partnership with Collo, Jaanmat is suspended and out for three games. In steps Willo as it’s November by now and STaylor is out for the season. A CB pairing that I would wager have seen more four+ hidings than any other two CB’s in the top two leagues.

  • 64 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2015 at 8:05 AM

Ha, not ideal, but given the amount of strengthening required, I think the odd new signing being able to cover a couple of positions will be utilised. I hope we still go after the young lad from Donny, and another centre half, one who is a natural leader and an organiser, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it was just a centre back with Mbemba covering right back.

  • 65 Bobbybee // Jul 22, 2015 at 8:11 AM

Jail, janmaat’s suspension takes us to the end of august, not november mate – as does williamsons, so he’ll be replacing nobody hopefully.

  • 66 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2015 at 8:13 AM

I’m pretty sure Jail was putting forward a potential scenario for next season, not stating anything as a matter of fact.

  • 67 Jail for Ashley // Jul 22, 2015 at 8:15 AM

So Mbemba gets shunted into RB after playing alongside statistically the worst PL CB pairing of all time, goals start to ship, find his feet in a new league the new lad starts to lose confidence, starts shirking headers while looking a bit lost standing in line with two past it CBs and a left back who is a CB. Mbemba gets criticised for not being able to adjust to the rigours of the PL before being loaned out to a CL team. Now where did that happen again….

  • 68 Toonfan8 // Jul 22, 2015 at 8:17 AM

Is Janmaat suspended for the start of the season?

  • 69 Bobbybee // Jul 22, 2015 at 8:21 AM

Lil, if that’s the case, he’s assuming the absolute worse scenario based on little reality. We will miss janmaat, but definitely not willo. I think we need to all just take a deep breath and see where the start of the season finds us. Signings so far are all positives and there’s more to come.

  • 70 Jail for Ashley // Jul 22, 2015 at 8:22 AM

Can’t be he played against W Ham

  • 71 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Jul 22, 2015 at 8:24 AM

Yeah totally agree short of at least three defenders of premiership quality to push us forward.

Didn’t McClaren say somewhere that this trip (USA) is a waste of time

  • 72 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2015 at 8:24 AM

I don’t think Mbiwa was suited. Mbemba does look more physical, so hopefully will adapt quicker. I still think we needed a vocal centre half more than him though. An organiser and leader of the back line would instantly improve everyone playing in it. Colo and Mbemba playing together won’t solve that.

I agree though, we should be getting players in to play specific positions. Maybe one jack of all trades in the squad, but that should only be to provide cover in worst case scenarios, it shouldn’t be as the immediate back up. As I say, hopefully we will try and get Holgate, or someone similar, but my faith in the club isn’t sufficiently restored to expect them to.

  • 73 Jail for Ashley // Jul 22, 2015 at 8:24 AM

It is not a good scenario but not the absolute worst, how is not it not possible that Jaanmat gets a straight red with STaylor already out for the season by November.

  • 74 Jail for Ashley // Jul 22, 2015 at 8:25 AM

    Someone exactly in that mould.

  • 75 Toonfan8 // Jul 22, 2015 at 8:25 AM

then it is good, we need two CB, one of them is Mbemba and other anybody of Abdennour/Rudiger, second one has to have some height and power…

  • 76 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2015 at 8:27 AM

Where does he say we will miss Willo? I think you need to re read the post as you seem to have got the wrong end of the stick here.

He says that Janmaat could pick up a suspension, Saylor could already have picked up an injury so Mbemba would have to move to right back leaving our centre back pairing as Willo and Colo.

That isn’t an implausible scenario in the slightest, and would disrupt the beginnings of a centre back pairing. Jail is saying it would be better to have a specialist right back as cover for Janmaat rather than relying on Mbemba to do it, or even worse, Bigi. Square pegs for square holes.

  • 77 Bobbybee // Jul 22, 2015 at 8:29 AM

I tell ya what, lets go the whole hog. The plane home will crash and we’ll start with no players or coaching staff, other than the ones left at home. Why this desperate search for things that MIGHT happen and latching on to anything negative? Give Macca a chance to do his transfer business and coach the players to play his way.

  • 78 Toonfan8 // Jul 22, 2015 at 8:30 AM

but I think we wont see second CB as we have here Collo,S.Taylor and Willo…one of them will be playing alongside Mbemba…for me the best is S.Taylor when match fit, but it is about 10matches a season…

  • 79 Rotonda heights // Jul 22, 2015 at 8:32 AM

    1) Get Aarons signed on a long term contract asap
    2) Get Kemen in to the first team picture asap if it’s not too late
    3) Hopefully confirm M’Bemba asap
    4) Make any of Abdennour, Rutiger, Veltman, N’Kolou, Dunk top priority.

  • 80 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2015 at 8:32 AM

Height and power would be good, but I’d value an experienced leader and organiser over those two in our current situation. If they had all of those then they would be perfect.

Ashley Williams would be a good fit, although only 6ft. Shawcross would be great but unlikely. Winston Reid would be the one I’d want personally, but again unlikely.

  • 81 Jail for Ashley // Jul 22, 2015 at 8:34 AM

This is what you’re up against. Plane crashes do not happen every November.

  • 82 LewSpi v2.0 // Jul 22, 2015 at 8:35 AM

Just watched the whole game . Few pointers:

    1. Aarons needs one of Mikes 8 year specials
    2. Obertan played better than Gouffran and Sissoko put together
    3. We need a proper right back as cover
    4. Fergie isn’t a defender
    5. I don’t think Cisse touched the ball

  • 83 Bobbybee // Jul 22, 2015 at 8:36 AM

Lil, ANYBODY could pick up suspensions and injuries – that’s football – but it’s a million miles away from a likely scenario. About as likely as my plane crash, but hey, it could happen. Let him finish his transfer business because none of us – me, you, the man in the moon – knows who’ll we’ll have by the big kick off.

  • 84 Rotonda heights // Jul 22, 2015 at 8:36 AM

it’s funny no one is talking about the previously much vaunted and hyped Lascelles as a starter yet he has the height, is quick and seems comfortable with the ball at his feet. Is he deemed not good enough already?

  • 85 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2015 at 8:36 AM

Where does Kemen fit in the first team? He should be out on loan. If he left it would to Liverpool or Spuds (two of those linked) then he would be sent out on loan before first team duties.

What is the point of coming on a forum if you don’t want to discuss the merits of the squad and the good and bad of the club? What has a plane crash got to do with anything?

Is it unlikely that a full back will at some point pick up a suspension across the course of the season? Given Saylor’s history, is it unlikely that he will pick up an injury?

  • 86 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2015 at 8:39 AM

Personally, I don’t think he is ready. He is another that would benefit from playing with an organiser and leader at the back who can help talk him through. I’d say that all of our defenders would benefit from that, Saylor is the closest we have, but we can’t rely on him.

  • 87 Ibizatoon // Jul 22, 2015 at 8:39 AM

Morning, was working really late, so didn’t get to see the game.

Scores are not so important at this stage, is the playing style improving?

Lew…So Obertan is doing his yearly pre-season “could be like a new signing” performances?

Could this be his year? 🙂

  • 88 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2015 at 8:40 AM

Yes ANYBODY could pick up suspensions and injuries which is why you need cover. That is exactly the point Jail is making yet you seem to think suggesting a plane crash is a sensible response. Utterly ridiculous and distasteful given the recent anniversary.

  • 89 Bobbybee // Jul 22, 2015 at 8:41 AM

Jail, my point exactly, but you’ve clearly missed my sarcasm. The spending’s not finished mate, let’s wait and see before reaching for the razor blades. Anyway, we’re not flying home in november lol.

  • 90 LewSpi v2.0 // Jul 22, 2015 at 8:45 AM

    Nice to see you.

He sure is, been on the weights again as well, makes our CBs look tiny. He didn’t do anything special tbh, just played how you’d expect a “premiership player” to play against a U.S. 2nd division reserve team.

And he outshone some of the others…

  • 91 Jail for Ashley // Jul 22, 2015 at 8:48 AM

We’re discussing the importance of specialist cover not reaching for razor blades.

  • 92 Ibizatoon // Jul 22, 2015 at 8:49 AM

  • 95 Bobbybee // Jul 22, 2015 at 9:05 AM

Lil, Don’t you dare throw that at me you moron. If you want to get down to the nitty gritty, those two lads – proper supporters, unlike some on here – are what you lot call the happy clappers and part of the problem for their loyalty. Seriously, if you have to stoop to that when I’m making a valid point about how stupid searching for negatives that aren’t there, then you’ve lost any argument before you start. I’ll be there every season, like i always have and those lads are closer to me than you lot, who can’t handle supporting a losing team. It’s fans like me and them who got us the reputation of the most loyal fans in the country, not the likes of miserable whiners who think the whole history was like the KK years. They all suddenly appeared out of nowhere when we were great, but where were they when WE were cramming SJP – all 8,9 and 10k of us? And if you weren’t old enough, then that shows the point up even more. They loved it whilst we were winning, but not when losing. Whine whine whine. We KNOW we need cover, it’s not wonderfully insightful to point out the blatantly obvious time after time after time after time. For all the ‘I’m not coming back until Ashley leaves’ b@#locks, wait until we start winning. All come sneaking back. Fair weather fans, every club has them.

  • 96 Ibizatoon // Jul 22, 2015 at 9:07 AM

JT…I did say “not so important” as in we’re not playing for points, therefore results are less important at this stage.

  • 97 John Tudor // Jul 22, 2015 at 9:10 AM

its a bit of a bummer getting beaten by a reserve team those other teams would not stand for that ferguson would have went ballistic

  • 99 Bobbybee // Jul 22, 2015 at 9:18 AM

Ibiza, no it wasn’t. The spending’s not over, but hey, you know better, i suppose. I’ve seen so much worse than this on my travels with the toon army, like when we had to visit grounds like wrexham, shrewsbury, port vale etc. What a bunch of cry babies. Boo hoo, we’re not the best. We’ve NEVER been the best since I’ve been going, which is the 1960’s. Ffs, give Macca a chance to turn things round. These are totally meaningless friendlies, not cup finals. There’s no magic wand for eight years of underinvestment, it can only be done in increments. We’re getting quality signings, what more can he do? He’s trying to put right years of bad coaching if you give him half a chance. If we won the league cup, you lot would whine it wasn’t the FA cup. It’s pathetic.

  • 100 WWSBRD // Jul 22, 2015 at 9:19 AM

  • 102 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2015 at 9:21 AM

Calm down lad, you are doing yourself no favours. If you had been around on the blog for long you would know fine well that I have no problem with the fans that go to the ground, and have never once labelled them the problem. In fact, I have argued against that assertion.

You were the one who brought in the topic of plane crashes and razor blades, whilst Jail and I were discussing the merits of specialist cover. What was the point? It has no relevance to football or the discussion that Jail and I were having. Neither one of us had suggested that we wouldn’t continue to spend. You jumped in with calling us negative when nothing we had posted was particularly negative at all.

I had a season ticket from the mid 80’s up until 2004 when I first moved away from the area. I’ve seen far worse times and far better times. None of that makes me a better supporter than any other. I still go whenever I am back in the UK, and will continue to do so.

Take some deep breaths and come back to me on the topic of football and NUFC if you feel like it, if not then fair enough. This blog is here to discuss NUFC if we weren’t discussing the merits of the squad then what i there to discuss. That is exactly what I come on here for, and that is all I was doing with Jail

Looks like Mbemba is on his way.

Hopefully no issues with medicals, given his age topic I would imagine the Newcastle medicals will use the same method used against the U21 Nigerian team to determine his age for sure.

We need a back up right back next thats for sure.

I would also like to point out Aarons contract expires this time next year! NEED to get that sorted regardless.

  • 106 pawl250 // Jul 22, 2015 at 9:26 AM

    John Tudor

Aye cos Schteve will play Bigi RB, Ferguson and Satka CB and Aarons LB in the PL.

Its a PRE SEASON FRIENDLY. Its all about fitness, nothing more. It would also be worth noting these U.S teams are up to speed for their season. We still have 2 weeks to go, and trust me in Pre Season 2 weeks is a long time fitness wise.

  • 107 WWSBRD // Jul 22, 2015 at 9:27 AM

  • 109 WWSBRD // Jul 22, 2015 at 9:29 AM

Am more concerned with Mbembas work visa issue than his medical, age is rather irrelevant whether he’s 20 or 26 is of little consequence in my head

  • 110 cyprus // Jul 22, 2015 at 9:30 AM

Premeer (as they called it) L., vs. US (whatever), only won one!

But, some good signs, believe it or not. Apart from some hopeful hoofs (Janm), we tried to play football and things seem to be changing, despite the threatened spanking.

Best player Aarons. Very good Perez and urm… Ober. Defense: good ole tradition continues 🙂

  • 111 LewSpi v2.0 // Jul 22, 2015 at 9:31 AM

In my opinion this game was a last chance look at fringe players, Gouf and Bigi etc etc.

Perhaps not even how good they are technically, but how they adapt with being out of position, how versatile they are and how well they cope with being behind in a game. It’s attributes like this that can only be assessed in a game, he can see how well they can control or pass a ball on the training pitch.

Don’t get yourselves stressed out. It aint worth it.

  • 112 Rotonda heights // Jul 22, 2015 at 9:32 AM

boycotts + demos have definitely brought about a change. anyone can see that and the ones who kept going to sjp should be thankful to those who sacrificed going for the greater good

When you start calling people morons it usually means you’ve lost the argument.

Please respect the views of others, even when those views are completely opposite to what you think and believe.

And keep the language respectable, and finally there’s no place for religion or politics in these discussions.

  • 115 pawl250 // Jul 22, 2015 at 9:34 AM

We went through this yesterday. We will not buy another CB unless we can shift one of Taylor, Williamson or Coloccini.

Our current CB situation if Mbemba signs is as follows

Mbemba, Coloccini, Taylor, Lasecelles, Williamson, Dummett (think I prefer him as a LB), Good then Satka

That said whilst we have that many senior players who can play in a total of 2 slots in our team its unlikely we will be buying another CB. Simple really.

Right now the way our right back situation looks is Janmatt, then Anita?, the Bigirmana…… Seriously short. Anyone saying Mbemba can play right back, please slap yourself and ask yourself if you want Williamson to fill the gap while arguably you best CB is shifted out of position. Its not acceptable. We need a natural right back. Dummett is enough for left back cover, as I said I even prefer him on the left opposed to centre.

The only player I have read that will be leaving is Elliot, which makes sense as we bought Darlow for a reason, and Woodman is clearly better than Alnwick who has left the club on a Free.

  • 116 pawl250 // Jul 22, 2015 at 9:36 AM

Depends on if 26 is the highest it goes! lol

Visa should be ok as he fits in top 50 Fifa rankings scenario.

  • 117 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2015 at 9:37 AM

Thoughts on Kemen? You said you wanted him in the first team. Where does he fit? I haven’t seen that much of him, but from what I have is he not similar to where Wjnaldum should be? A midfielder who can drive the team forward? I think he is best served by being out on loan until Jan, then reassess and see if he can start to be incorporated into the first team.

  • 118 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2015 at 9:41 AM

DR Congo are 60th in the world.

As for him playing right back, I agree, he shouldn’t be playing there, but I expect he will be seen as cover unless we can get someone like 18year old Holgate in as a prospect and cover. Ideally we should have gone and got Trippier. At £3.5 million he is a bargain.

  • 119 santoon // Jul 22, 2015 at 9:41 AM

if s.taylor can keep fit he will be good cover

  • 120 pawl250 // Jul 22, 2015 at 9:41 AM

Do not know much about Kemen, but Midfield is not the issue. Think we have the strongest midfield since Bobby days now. Maybe could do with a natural right winger but I think that is Sissokos best position as he is too lazy for centre midfield.

That said, a young natural winger for back up would not hurt. Obertan has had enough chances, and just when you think he has turned a corner he flops to mediocrity or gets injured long term.

That said any significant run under Pardew always seemed to have Obertan in the team. He was brought in last season as an act of desperation and we went on the winning streak, and the year we finished 5th he was our main right winger until Christmas when our defence required more protection but the run that season happened before the Christmas period.

  • 121 Bobbybee // Jul 22, 2015 at 9:42 AM

Lil, i’ll talk football all day as long as it’s ballanced. Making up silly scenarios? Did i start that? My plane point was simply to show that you can make worse scenarios that are equally unlikely, but to be honest mate, that was a nasty comment on your behalf, but maybe i overreacted, and if so, accept my apologies. Think what you said and imagine how that can hurt eh? It’s all the negativity that isn’t called for that winds me up. We’ve brought in a head coach who’s spending on class players and trying to make us attractive to watch, yet he’s getting no back up at all off some people. He’s not, nor ever has been, the problem. I did lose my rag and i apologise if i upset anybody, but give the man a break eh? He’s on our side. He wants what we want, but you know I’m right when I say some people will never be happy. We’ve all suffered under Ashley, not just the whiners. Nobody enjoys going to watch rubbish, but that’s just life sometimes. Think how hartlepool fans feel, but they turn up regardless and I get that 100%. It’s sometimes difficult to talk football when some people won’t acknowledge the slightest bit of genuine progress. Are we better off than this time last season? Absolutely. Are we signing classy players? Oh yes. Have we got better coaching staff? 100%. Do results in pre season friendlies have any bearing on the current season? Not one bit. Can you see why i get hacked off lol.

  • 122 hibbit // Jul 22, 2015 at 9:42 AM

pawl i have been going through this for the last eight years not going to stop now …… must be the only fan that thinks dummett is a better lb then cb…… pawl we leak goals we need a change

  • 123 Bobbybee // Jul 22, 2015 at 9:55 AM

Rotunda, if you want to believe the boycotts brought about change, carry on deluding yourself. Not sure where i brought politics or religion into it either – other than nufc is the closest to religion i’ll ever get. And my opinion is as valid as anybody’s, despite the fact that they don’t agree with yours. As for my loss of temper, I’ve addressed that already, but I was severely provoked by a very uncalled for comment.

  • 124 Munster Mag // Jul 22, 2015 at 10:05 AM

In fairness a good bit of what Bobbybee says is right, in a broad brush way. As I have been saying for weeks, there are too many negative guys on here, always have been ( mind you not helped by the crap football etc ) . Jail, you are probably referring to me as one of the new age optimists or whatever, but I’m not. I do see reasons to more cheerful and am more optimistic, but not blind. Lil, we are all in agreement that we need more players, and we all agree by and large on the positions. Bobby is making the point ( please no references to planes etc bobby ) that Steve Mc knows all that too, and has to be given time in the transfer market. Bobby ( I think ) has also said ( as have I ) that we can only pick up the nuances of what Steve said…ie 3 windows, sadly.

  • 125 Graeme // Jul 22, 2015 at 10:26 AM

Jail, Lilo – surely getting a recognised LB in place is far more urgent than getting cover for Jaanmatt. There has been no natural LB since Santon left, other than Hairdryer – and he is, in reality, crap there and should be a back-up player at best!!
