Rolando Aarons’ Two Great Goals At Portland – Video

10:23 am, Wednesday, July 22nd, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 64 Comments

Rolando Aaron’s first goal lat night was what the American commentators said was worth the price of admission alone, and then he scored a second goal minute later when the 19 year-old smashed the ball into the roof of the net for Newcastle’s third goal to make it close at 4-3 against Portland Timbers.

After six minutes he also beat his full back easily down the left wing, and pulled the ball back to Gini Wijnaldum to score his first goal for Newcastle.

What a player this lad is!

Can someone clear up the deal with Aarons’ contract? We need to tie him down to a long-term contract NOW. He’s clearly a talent and I know other clubs are looking at him, Arsenal for one.

Sky sports reporter Keith just confirmed this on Twitter

Chancel Mbemba tells Belgian media he is on the verge of joining Newcastle. Work permit and medical still needs to be dealt with.

    Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2015 at 10:27 AM

Yeah, apology accepted. No problems. I still want a winger or a wide forward brought in, as well as defensive reinforcements. We have a number of players who can play out wide, but none who are genuine wingers and proven in the position. The way McClaren likes to set his side up means that these are key roles. I’d much prefer Berahinho to Austin at this stage.

Everything won’t be done in one window, which is why I think that Mbemba will be used as cover at right back, unless we can get a cheapish prospect in. An organiser is more pressing for me as he can improve everyone. An organiser at centre half, and we can still have reasonable defence even if we have to switch Mbemba out to full back.

  • 4 Munster Mag // Jul 22, 2015 at 10:29 AM

Pawl, Sissoko was never qualified to play central midfield. He gets away with it for France but has better players . He cant be a holding player because he cant tackle. I have never trusted his attitude either and was calling him a fraud a few years ago now. opefully he can improve his crossing and be used on right. I woukd rather go “all out” for a top class centre back than 2-3 cover players and hope our fitness regime improves. McClaren is ( I think ) known to be quite conservative and believes in building on defence ( as far as I hear ) so I am hoping that he will insist on investment beyond Mbemba in defence / centre half position.

People need to calm down about this game. It was only a friendly. Yes I questions the line up, mainly the defence with bigi, satka, Fergie aarons. & Janmaat playin in the centre when he came on.

But the thing people are forgettin is it was a friendly against a team a division down. It’s a chance to see who can make the mark out of the youngsters. If you don’t try them, u will never find out who will. Fergie is the only one of them I would have said before the game won’t make it, I haven’t changed my mind.

Remember, there is no chance McClaren would have used that defence in the premiership. Our first choice is bad enough in premiership. No point sayin we will never make top six or we will be relegated. We can’t judge a season on one friendly game.

The queue on this blog of folk waiting for progress on signings is getting longer and longer – almost as many as the number of players we’ve been runoured to sign.

Second CB, winger, DM ? Where are they ?

No point signing half the number of players you actually need.
Make do and mend has not worked at the Toon.

    Ashley out!

Sorry, I couldn’t help it – seems wrong to have anything else in the first comment.

Having scrolled though the game first thing this morning, I was alarmed at the line-up to say the least…what kind of defence was that?

As usual, shocking defending at set-pieces. Our reserve players are looking awful pre-season. Bigi is no defender, and neither is Ferguson. Aarons’ goals and assist were great, and he seemed a very good threat down that left-hand side, but his body language is well off. No smiles, celebrations, joy or anything? Is he sulking because we’re denying him a transfer?

Make no bones about it, that was a second-string MLS team and our reserves should be giving them a hiding, fitness levels or not.

Hopefully we’ll start to see the first XI begin to take shape in the next few weeks. Looking forward to taking my boy to his first game vs Mönchengladbach on the 1st. We should see Wijnaldum and Mitrogol take their bows at SJP!

The French media are full of stories about us not giving up on Thauvin , what do you think of him ?

  • 11 LewSpi v2.0 // Jul 22, 2015 at 10:40 AM

His contract runs out in June next year

  • 12 Graeme // Jul 22, 2015 at 10:41 AM

Jail, Lilo –from earlier – surely getting a recognised LB in place is far more urgent than getting cover for Jaanmatt. There has been no natural LB since Santon left, other than Hairdryer – and he is, in reality, crap there and should be a back-up player at best!!

Our defence proved, beyond all doubt last year – they are simply not fit for pupose, with the honourable exception of Jaanmatt.

It looks like we are finally getting a new CB, hopefully Schteve can convince them he needs a 2nd PLUS a replacement for Santon.

  • 13 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2015 at 10:42 AM

I don’t particularly want Thauvin. He would take a bit of time to adapt, if indeed he managed, and is hardly prolific when it comes to assists or goals. He seems a player that flatters to deceive and is more living off his youth reputation than anything much he has done at senior level.

I’d prefer us to go after Matty Phillips, or make a push for Bolasie – although I doubt Pardew would sanction that. Whilst I am happy bringing talent in from abroad, I’d also like a player or two that knows the Prem.

  • 14 Sliema // Jul 22, 2015 at 10:44 AM

Newcastle are close to completing another signing from Anderlecht.

Sky Sports understand full-back Chancel Mbemba will join the club subject to a work permit and a medical.

Mbemba is quoted as saying it is a “dream come true” and he will join Alexander Mitrovic in making the move to St James’ Park.

  • 15 Jib // Jul 22, 2015 at 10:44 AM

    What about Andros Townsend ?

  • 16 LewSpi v2.0 // Jul 22, 2015 at 10:44 AM

I really like Haidara, I think he’s one of those who will blossom under McClaren.

Great at getting forward (important as teh FBs push up with his tactics), and quick enough to recover and get back. I thought he’s really shone in the games he’s played, before getting sent off obviously.

  • 17 hibbit // Jul 22, 2015 at 10:45 AM

pawl ……….. every decent team as you put have decent cb and yes i do under stand football played at a decent level coached at a decent level and watch newcastle for over 50 years

  • 18 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2015 at 10:45 AM

We need a left back as well, I don’t think Haidara is terrible, but he has spent a lot of time injured, and I’m not sold on Dummet as a left back – or at all really.

Again though, I think someone who can organise and lead the defence will be able to bring more out of them both, which would allow focus to be put on that position in the future, rather than immediately.

  • 19 Jib // Jul 22, 2015 at 10:47 AM

From previous page – although it was obscured by some Ibizatoon breast beating

McClaren was livid that Portland put out an U23 side . A touch of the Fcuk youse about this game altho he’s hardly going to say so.
    On happier news
Chancel Mbemba is getting his visa in Paris today
    It’s a done deal for €11million !!!
    He’ll be here Thursday

Has anyone heard any more on Abdennour.
He was rumured to be wanting to join us,and we were supposed to be interested but heard nowt since.
He would be a superb addition and would,nt have a problem getting a work permit.

  • 21 banjax // Jul 22, 2015 at 10:50 AM

First the signings then the sell off. The defence is creaking we all know that and McClaren has had time to see that for himself so I would expect changes to be made there very soon. Williamson was never Premier league quality and along with injury prone Taylor and a slowing Colochini these are the ones needing to be replaced. I suspect McClaren knows this now but the right replacements will take time. We are now overloaded with midfield players so Tiote and a another one or two should be on their way. As far as forwards I think we need to keep Cisse and sell Goufran and Rivierre and bring in another forward such as Bas Dost or Austin – that will still give us a potent strike force along with Mitrovich. I still say the spend needs to be £80m+ just to bring us on par with West Ham, Swansea and Stoke and with Aston Villa getting a £37 million transfer boost from Benteke, they are going to be in the mix.

  • 22 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2015 at 10:50 AM

No. Just no. Probably the most overrated English footballer around at the minute. All because he is English, quick and runs at people. The fact he can’t cross and his shooting is wayward, is overlooked.

If he was any good Spurs would not be looking to offload an English talented winger, but it would appear they are. Pocchettino likes his team to play football, Townsend doesn’t fit that, so he wouldn’t fit with McClaren’s philosophy.

  • 23 Whumpie // Jul 22, 2015 at 10:51 AM

I just watched the whole match. Very mixed bag, but a someone has said – let’s not get carried away.

I’m not sure what the gaffer was trying to learn from that back line; whoever thought Fergie could play CB? Must have been something in training – but it sure as hell didn’t work. I still have hope for him as a midfielder though.

Aarons just continues to show how good he could get – but a lot of what he does won’t work against PL defenders quite as easily. As long as he doesn’t “do a Sterling” and disappear up his own ego he’ll go far.

Our new goalie… well, let’s hope that was a one-off.

I thought Obertan looked good again; popped up all over the place and made life difficult. Cisse, Perez and Goofs, though… what was that??

As for the Timbers and their fans: nothing but respect. Great stadium, atmosphere, and some entertaining, skillful footie.

Overall, this match proves one point: if you do f-all for several transfer windows in a row, you leave yourself too much to do. We desperately need at least three more ‘purple players’ and I can’t see that happening. Once more I think Ashley’s target of 10th is just about attainable, but don’t expect any more than that. I’ve seen nowt to suggest that all this guff about going for cups and CL places is anything more than window-dressing to stop us boycotting again.

Sorry to dampen spirits but that’s how it looks to me.

  • 24 Ibizatoon // Jul 22, 2015 at 10:51 AM

Jib…You feel the need to mention me, why?

    I’m flattered of course.

  • 25 Graeme // Jul 22, 2015 at 10:52 AM

LewSpi @ 16 – Haidara is a good young player who is developing. Throwing him in as first choice LB is never going to develop him, he wont get the time and will probably ruin him.
If he was playing back-up and learning from a good LB, I think he would become our future LB, given the time to develop properly.

  • 26 Jib // Jul 22, 2015 at 10:52 AM

  • 27 LewSpi v2.0 // Jul 22, 2015 at 10:54 AM

    From wiki…

“Abdennour was born in Sousse, Tunisia. His preferred position is a left winger, although he regularly plays at defender.”

Exactly ! Absolutely nothing to offer our team imho.

I forgot to mention I found this site the other day.
    Sounds right up your alley.

  • 30 Whumpie // Jul 22, 2015 at 10:56 AM

What gets me is that I saw an online poll with over 90% of respondents being “optimistic about the new season”.

What have we seen that suggests we can defend against ANY premiership team?

Mbemba is a good start, but given that we don’t have a single reliable, premier league proven CB in our squad just fills me with dread. Sod midfielders; we need to make a huge offer for another PL team’s 1st-choice CB… and quickly.

  • 31 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2015 at 10:58 AM

Ha. Not on Townsend, my mind was made up pretty quickly after watching him play. He is one of the main reasons Soldado flopped, and if we want good service into the box then he is the last person we should be looking at.

  • 32 Jail for Ashley // Jul 22, 2015 at 10:59 AM

Suggesting that Jaanmatt could get a straight red and STaylor being injured is not a silly scenario.
In an ideal world we could have a LB on par with Jaanmatt with Haidara covering and Dummet covering CB only. I haven’t seen much of him but on a Stoke blog they seem to rate that Pieters. We went for Santon.

  • 33 Ibizatoon // Jul 22, 2015 at 10:59 AM

Jib…That’s why I like you. Perceptive and kind. Thanks for the link.

Whumpie…There does appear to be improvements upon where we were at the end of last season. That in itself is reason for cautious optimism. There is still a lot of work to be done. Hopefully it continues, but we aren’t there yet. Defense is still a worry for me.

  • 34 Graeme // Jul 22, 2015 at 11:01 AM

Whumpie @ 23 – I read the statement to mean that it is going to take 3 windows to right the wrongs within the squad left by Carr, P45DUE, Carver et al.
A complete re-build of the playing staff is required, including a complete Back Four – it wont happen overnight – but we most definately need another CB this window and hopefully a LB as well.
That should then form the basis for the rest of the squad to work from. If we can reduce the Goals Against from 60 to 30 – we will be in a far better position than we were at the end of last season.

  • 37 Whumpie // Jul 22, 2015 at 11:04 AM

Yep, I think everyone – including Maclaren – can see what’s needed. But why all the focus on attacking players when it’s central defence that is clearly so much more desperate?

I just worry that they’ve blown nearly £40m on players and only one is a defender. What chance now of getting the other three defenders we need?

  • 38 Munster Mag // Jul 22, 2015 at 11:14 AM

Whumpie, we havent blown 40m. We have spent well. Sadly it wont be enough and the guys shouting about top 6 are mad. Lets aim for eighth and see where we go, but eiter way we need another centre half but I dont think it will happen. Just a bad feeling. 3 windows and all that…In fact we need another left back, another right back, another winger . We might go down this route and get a few 4-5 mill players from Carrs box of tricks ( which can be a v poor box at times ( , rather than splashing out 15mill on one centre half. It is really dependent on who he wants to offload. Ibiza, hows the form?

  • 39 Munster Mag // Jul 22, 2015 at 11:15 AM

So is Mbemba mainly a right back – surely not ?

  • 40 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2015 at 11:15 AM

He is primarily a centre back. He has played right back before and can do a job there. He mainly plays as a defensive midfielder for DR Congo.

  • 41 lochinvar // Jul 22, 2015 at 11:16 AM

That was a training ground run out -so what goes on on tour , stays on tour !

The concern is that Ashley/Charnley might be planning to keep Colo going at least until Xmas – but the Prem league is no place to ” see how he gets on for now” hoping that all will be well in defence and save spending anymore at least until January.

If the plan is to have a strong Prem squad of say x 16 top players ( to rotate as needed ) plus another squad to mix up with for Cup matches and as first team cover then we are clearly very lightweight in defence. Everyone knows that and everyone on the blog states that !

We have to win from the outset of the new season and be well ahead of the pack and in a strong league position by Xmas. That clearly means we need to buy NOW to build a fortress defence with some tall and combatant CD’s – so the real test of Ashleys intent is if Charnley and McLaren are allowed to get them in.

  • 42 Bobbybee // Jul 22, 2015 at 11:16 AM

Whumpie, I’m optimistic because we’ve got better coaches and are now signing quality players, which is a massive upgrade from last season. Janmaat is fine at right back and if he can stay fit, this new philosophy will suit Haidarra. Mbemba will fill one centre back position and the spending isn’t finished. Mitrovic will score at any level because he’s a natural goalscorer and Wijnaldum is pure class. Nobody can cure eight years of neglect overnight, but we start this season in a much healthier position than we left the last. Why would we not be optimistic?

  • 43 Graeme // Jul 22, 2015 at 11:16 AM

Whumpie @ 37 – what we have already spent is, frankly, not an issue, its not like we can’t afford it. Given the increase in TV money from next season, relegation this season would be an unmitigated disaster.

It is vital to a lot of clubs survival that they are not relegated this season – they may never get back up – which applies to us as much as anyone else. If they have to spend another £40 million to complete the squad overhaul to ensure a comfortable season finishing in the top half – then that’s what they need to do.
They can do the tinkering the season after, sell off players no longer required – but they can’t screw it up this season.

I just don’t see how everyone can be excited by the lads from Belgian Pro League. Wijnaldum is a different story but the other 2?

I remember how ecstatic I was when we signed Mbiwa. Mbemba might be a bulky lad but so was Chris Samba & even though he went to Russia for the money, no top 6 club at the time showed any interest.

  • 47 Bobbybee // Jul 22, 2015 at 11:27 AM

Jail, janmaat got one silly red card. I could easily counter that by saying every other player in the PL could do the same – which they could. Taylor might get injured, but so could every other player. That’s just football mate. I could win the lottery as well, but i ain’t holding my breath. There’s a lot to be said for positive thinking – ask yuri gellar lol.

Aymeric Laporte is only the 2nd Frenchman to play for Athletic Bilbao .
He is a classy 6’2″, 21 year old centre back, who can also play left back.
He has had a €27.5 million release clause slapped on him when Barcelona and Milan came sniffing last Summer.

The Spanish footy bible La Marca said:

“Aymeric Laporte se convierte en el sueño inalcanzable del AC Milan “(Aymeric Laporte becomes the unattainable dream of AC Milan )

We have sniffed before , last Summer , and in the Winter window .
Would we pay £20 million for a centre back, albeit one who is being mooted as a future France captain ?

    It’s nice to dream.
