Is This Center-Back One Of McClaren’s Surprise Signings?

10:19 pm, Thursday, July 23rd, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 22 Comments

There are some rumors going around that Newcastle may be interested in Manchester United’s center-back Johnny Evans – yes the one that was involved in that spitting incident with Papiss Cisse on March 4th.

Jonny was on loan at Sunderland back in January of 2007 for the second half of that season, when he had only just turned 19, and he played 15 times for the Black Cats and played quite well.

Newcastle could announce the signing of 20 year-old Anderlecht center-back Chancel Mbemba as early as tomorrow,  when he will undertake a medical.

He was photographed arriving at Newcastle this afternoon and was shown around St. James’ Park.

Newcastle are after a number of top class center-backs like Monaco’s Aymen Abdennour, Ajax’s Joel Veltman and Schalke’s Joel Matip,  and either one of those we think would be good buys to play alongside Mbemba at the back for the Magpies next season.

Jonny Evans turns 28 in January,  and while he’s a decent center-back and stands 6’2¨ tall,  he seems prone to make mistakes – although he does have bags of experience.

We don’t even know if he’ll be available this summer, and it depends on the Red Devils manager Louis van Gaal.

But for a reasonable fee we suppose Newcastle could bring in somebody who is experienced and could probably do a job for us at the back – and he would be cheaper than the three we mentioned above.

Although it’s difficult to accuse Newcastle of being mean and thrifty this summer.

Evans made his Manchester United debut when he was 19 in September, 2007 against Coventry City in the Football League Cup – a game they lost 2-0.

Since then,  he’s made a total of 196 appearances for United with 7 goals,  and last year made 15 appearances under new manager Louis van Gaal.

To be honest, we’re not all that keen on Evans.

What do you think?

Who do you think some of the surprise signings may be.

And I’ve already come up with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi – so don’t  choose them.

🙂

Comments welcome.

Bit ironic West Ham get to play in Europa League for winning The Fair Play league but get two players sent off in first two matches!

Would love the surprise signing to be Shawcross, but can only dream.

A centre back to go with Mbemba, Colo and Lascelles from this list:
    – Matip
    – Rudiger
    – Veltman
    – Zouma (loan view to buy)
    – Abenddour (sp)

And we will be top 8 with Janmaat at right back all season.

Toonprodigy”………. From previous thread. How can you state that Austin is better than Mitrovic? How are you comparing them?

If Austin is so good why has he not been snapped up.

I must disagree , I think Mitrovic has unlimited potential . I like Austin but he won’t improve much now.

Why bother with such a speculative and negative feature ?

“We don’t even know if he’ll be available this summer, ”
“To be honest, we’re not all that keen on Evans.”

I’d rather a bit of analysis on Matip or Rudiger

It went down hill after I defended Ed on the other blog over his “Ed lines”

He’s thrown me under the bus everyday from that.

    Betty,

Because of his goal ratio and experience now.

18 goals in a poor team is pretty good.

    No.

I think Johnny Evans would be a great signing for us, especially at around £5m. If we add Matip plus another full back then I can definitely see Williamson, Taylor and Even Colo leaving the club. Let’s wait and see. This is more like the way things should have been and long may the catch up continue.

    Michael Dawson full stop.

  • 21 AlfiePotter // Jul 24, 2015 at 7:18 AM

The thing you gotta renember now is the 25 man squad. Very much 1 in 1 out now and only 17 spaces can be taken by non home grown players. Means willow and taylor in stronger position than colo.
