Is This Center-Back One Of McClaren’s Surprise Signings?

There are some rumors going around that Newcastle may be interested in Manchester United’s center-back Johnny Evans – yes the one that was involved in that spitting incident with Papiss Cisse on March 4th.

Jonny was on loan at Sunderland back in January of 2007 for the second half of that season, when he had only just turned 19, and he played 15 times for the Black Cats and played quite well.

Newcastle could announce the signing of 20 year-old Anderlecht center-back Chancel Mbemba as early as tomorrow,  when he will undertake a medical.

He was photographed arriving at Newcastle this afternoon and was shown around St. James’ Park.

Newcastle are after a number of top class center-backs like Monaco’s Aymen Abdennour, Ajax’s Joel Veltman and Schalke’s Joel Matip,  and either one of those we think would be good buys to play alongside Mbemba at the back for the Magpies next season.

Jonny Evans turns 28 in January,  and while he’s a decent center-back and stands 6’2¨ tall,  he seems prone to make mistakes – although he does have bags of experience.

We don’t even know if he’ll be available this summer, and it depends on the Red Devils manager Louis van Gaal.

But for a reasonable fee we suppose Newcastle could bring in somebody who is experienced and could probably do a job for us at the back – and he would be cheaper than the three we mentioned above.

Although it’s difficult to accuse Newcastle of being mean and thrifty this summer.

Evans made his Manchester United debut when he was 19 in September, 2007 against Coventry City in the Football League Cup – a game they lost 2-0.

Since then,  he’s made a total of 196 appearances for United with 7 goals,  and last year made 15 appearances under new manager Louis van Gaal.

To be honest, we’re not all that keen on Evans.

What do you think?

Who do you think some of the surprise signings may be.

And I’ve already come up with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi – so don’t  choose them.
