There’s Truth In Newcastle’s Interest In Uruguayan International

12:24 pm, Friday, July 24th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 87 Comments

There have been reports that Aston Villa are targeting Bordeaux striker Diego Rolan as a replacement for Belgium Christian Benteke, who has been sold to Liverpool for a massive £32.5M.

But Bordeaux President Jean-Louis Triaud has dismissed those reports, but interestingly enough, has said Newcastle United are interested in the 22 year-old Uruguayan striker and have made an enquiry.

diego rolan

Diego Rolan – Newcastle have made enquiry

Rolan has played 6 times for the full Uruguayan National side and Triaud has said Newcastle’s interest in the striker is real:

“There has been contact with Newcastle, but never directly with us, only through various intermediaries.”  “With Newcastle, I suppose you could say there is some truth in their interest.”

“I’ve never heard talk of Aston Villa,” “They have never contacted us directly nor indirectly, via any agent, at the time of speaking.”

Rolan apparently is keen to try his luck in the Premier League.

He’s been at Bordeaux now for over two years, after joining them from Montevideo club Defensor Sporting in early 2013.

Last season he scored 16 goals in 38 appearances for the French club,

He made his debut for Uruguay in September 2014, in the friendly against Japan in Sapporo and in May of this year Rolan was included in Uruguay’s squad for the 2015 Copa America.

He was assigned the number 9 shirt, usually worn by the suspended Luis Suarez of Barcelona, and formerly of Liverpool.

In his two seasons at Bordeaux he’s played 74 games with 18 goals and 9 assists.

The player stands 5’10” tall and has speed, but Rolan is also young and could be a very decent acquisition for Newcastle.

He was reported  to be offered to Newcastle a couple of months ago as it seems Bordeaux would like to sell him this summer.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

where’s the big commanding centre back

QPR Manager says Austin will only move to Spurs or Chelsea.

Time to leave this one now surely and move on.

  • 3 Graeme // Jul 24, 2015 at 12:35 PM

You’re right JT – a solid CB has to be our main objective now, followed by a LB. Anything else is great, but those 2 positions need some quality!!

  • 4 Lindisfarne // Jul 24, 2015 at 12:39 PM

I would have thought Austin would have used that loop hole where he could buy his way out of the QPR contract when in the last year. Far more attractive as a free agent and of course NUFC have history with this ploy.

  • 5 BandB // Jul 24, 2015 at 12:43 PM

    Yes, this player please.
Even if we sell to buy him.

  • 6 Ian Toon // Jul 24, 2015 at 12:44 PM

Lilongwe And Blackley – On your earlier comments regarding Sissoko. He had a poor season and at times appeared to either lack motivation or was too hot headed. I am thinking of the L’pool away game. We need more depth in the squad and Sissoko has so much more to offer.
To date he has flattered to deceive, in that we won his first two games in a toon shirt and he was outstanding. January 2013 signing – at Villa and at home to Chelsea . The latter was the game where Demba Ba headed Coloccini’s boot. Moussaka was outstanding and scored twice. He lost his way under a clueless Carver but SM can manage the so called big players. He could excell with 2016 Euro in mind. We need a big squad with more quality.
He is versatile- in a holding DM position but he is not disciplined enough for me and lacks concentration in a covering role. I would prefer Colback or Anita. His best role is as an attacking midfielder.
He has so much more to offer and I would like him to show it in a Newcastle shirt.

  • 7 magscar // Jul 24, 2015 at 12:48 PM

Does the order of the signings indicate the priorities of positions to be filled or is there more to it.

For example are some signings more difficult/unlikely the longer they are allowed to drag on whereas others are more safely left until the ones that otherwise might get away are sewn up?

The one(s) under the radar McClaren refers to might I suppose include say a Shawcross rather than a high profile forward/midfielder?

Who of us knows but as I said earlier I am getting a little bit more relaxed as the window progresses so am remaining positive.

having said that have been around long enough not to think there could be a sting in the tail but fingers crossed and Rome can’t be rebuilt in one transfer window but at least let’s get the foundations all laid.

  • 8 JP...from The Rock // Jul 24, 2015 at 12:50 PM

If this guy cn also play on the wings then he would be a good signing.

  • 9 the broons // Jul 24, 2015 at 12:51 PM

Yep I agree with the previous comments, another real big strong commanding centre back along with mbemba.

Honestly if we did that I would be happy with our business if that was the last of it, of course I think we could strengthen in a number of positions but we have to remain realistic and remember that we to get the priorities sorted first.

As for the vacant right winger, am hoping cabella and even obertan could still come into their own this season and possibly nail down a starting place. Aarons has to start on the left.

  • 10 Lindisfarne // Jul 24, 2015 at 12:53 PM

Rolan is quick and will make the opposition defense sit back slightly deeper, there by increasing the space to play the ball through the midfield. IMO playing one or two of Cisse/Mitrovic/Rolan will offer fantastic opportunity for substitions, combinations and Cup runs. Butwe also still need a central defender and possibly a better left back.

  • 11 The overrated Frenchman // Jul 24, 2015 at 12:53 PM

I think we’ve pretty much all thought Austin was going to end up at a London club haven’t we? Ronjohno is right – let’s move on. Aleksander the Great is our new no.9 anyway. If we want to strengthen up forward a wide right sided player should surely be a priority. How much more time do we want to waste on Obertan? Sissoko is not suited to that position especially well either. I’m not sure who would be the best fit but there has to be options, surely, given that the purse-strings seem to have been loosened.

  • 12 Sazzer // Jul 24, 2015 at 12:57 PM

I would agree a deal for Fer then ask Tottenham at least twice that amount for Sissoko.

  • 13 magscar // Jul 24, 2015 at 12:59 PM

    Ian Toon

Sissoko was poor under Carver (when he was most needed and lacked basic self motivation) but also regularly went missing under Pardew as well.

Coaching and formations isn’t simply the answer to this and my worry is that he just can’t be consistent regardless of the opposition and there is a need for better players to rise above the dross around them at times. That feature may be what prevents his move to a top 4 club here.

As for an attacking midfield role I don’t think he has the touch to excel in a quick passing side but will be pleased to be proved wrong. He is not commanding enough on the ball or in the air given his build and that may be another area one on one coaching can develop in him. He was one of the players that initially excited me in the Jan bonanza a few seasons ago but has largely disappointed unless he is apparently putting him self on show.

End of season report reads must ( and can) do better.

  • 14 BandB // Jul 24, 2015 at 1:00 PM

Rome wasn’t be built in a day.
But we should have momentum in the transfer market at the moment (especially if we can get Mbemba over the line) and this could be the best chance we will ever get to pitch for Rolan, who ticks a lot of boxes.

  • 15 Sazzer // Jul 24, 2015 at 1:02 PM

Or if McClaren prefer a winger or creative midfielder then same process.

  • 16 Our Toon // Jul 24, 2015 at 1:04 PM

Afternoon all, surprised at the amount of fans wanting rid of sissoko, I agree he’s not ever hit the heights of that chelsea game but he’s far better than Remy Cabella who for some reason most want to give another chance after a more unproductive season than Sammy Ameobi.

We need to keep the squad strong and competitive but if someone needs to go get rid of Cabella, Sissoko at least can carry the ball and commit defenders

  • 17 magscar // Jul 24, 2015 at 1:09 PM

    BandB

Never certain whether or not sarcasm reigns with you. In my case probably 🙂

But what is interesting of late is that dialogue is revolving around who and also what position we should be after as a priority.

In this virtual world as with real “in the pub” discussions and as BobbyBee said a day or so ago ( quite vehemently) we hold what we feel are valid opinions. That is all they are but they are after all what makes conversation on football dynamic and involving.

    Long may it reign.

  • 19 davetoon // Jul 24, 2015 at 1:12 PM

I think Sissoko and other players who lost their way last season will improve with better coaching but more importantly competition for places.

  • 20 magscar // Jul 24, 2015 at 1:15 PM

    Our Toon

Don’t necessarily “want rid” but he needs to fit in a new side and improve his consistency and attitude.

We would be in the driving seat with his transfer as it would be on our terms and hopefully if it went ahead would be for more than an improved bank balance but for the progress of the team.

Not my decision but for once I am open minded but it all depends on the outcome – simply balancing the books wouldn’t be good enough a reason in my view.

  • 21 Ian Toon // Jul 24, 2015 at 1:15 PM

magscar- I agree with your report and your overall findings. It was simply because he offered so much at the beginning that I believe with the right sort of coaching influence he can achieve so much more. There are times when I have thought he had the touch of an elephant but this is a question of confidence or the lack of it. His surging runs were not a figment of our imagination and watching him in a French shirt he is the type of player who likes a higher tempo game.
It is pre season and a time for optimism. I will keep the faith because nothing annoys a fan more than seeing an ex do well somewhere else.
I am still talking about football.

would like to see shawcross here, if theres any truth to that… but agreed, we need to hold on to sissoko, and build up, not selling and coming up short at the line, like so many previous seasons…

im actually very optimistic about this season thus far, still work to be done, but its been a very nice change, to see quality signings rather than what we can project to make down the road…

  • 25 Sazzer // Jul 24, 2015 at 1:24 PM

    Our Toon
I think people rate Sissoko higher than Cabella but if bid of 18 m £ or more comes in for him then it is certainly worth considering.

We might even be able to replace him with 2 proven PL in Mirallas and Fer as for that amount.

  • 26 Our Toon // Jul 24, 2015 at 1:25 PM

    Magscar

Agreed he needs to fit in but there are plenty of others I’d flog before lookin to get rid of Sissoko.

Having said that….If we do get rid of him and he was replaced by a Shakiri type player then I wouldn’t mind

  • 27 ToonAndy // Jul 24, 2015 at 1:25 PM

  • 28 magscar // Jul 24, 2015 at 1:26 PM

    Ian Toon

Your last point would also be my fear. Recent departures certainly haven’t found the grass greener elsewhere but there will come a time…

My main disappointment with him that given his athleticism, power and the fact he is a current international yet in a struggling team couldn’t bring more than he did. Contrast his performances with say Perez. I am sure coaching might help and perhaps Steve Black’s role in particular but I believe that the best players have strong self motivation.

Who knows recent purchases and competition in key areas with good coaching might be the catalyst for a rebirth of the awaited Viera/Toure we once thought we had.

  • 29 BandB // Jul 24, 2015 at 1:28 PM

I was only thinking that Rolan has scored 16 goals in 38 games, when we still don’t have a lot of goals in the squad.
But hey! If he looks crap on a YouTube clip, sod him!

  • 30 Our Toon // Jul 24, 2015 at 1:30 PM

    Sazzer

The 2 players you mention have been accused throughout there career of inconsistency. Mirallas looks good in patches but far to often he goes missing and after fighting Baines for the penalty last season which he went on to miss and they drew the game he’s someone I wouldn’t want here.

Fer is someone I’ve liked previously but he spends a good chunk out injured, he’s also been in England for 2 years and got relegated twice jury is still out on him for me. 18m for Sissoko is alot of money but I’d rather see us bring in a winger before we consider selling him

  • 31 Ashleys Purse Padlock // Jul 24, 2015 at 1:32 PM

    Hello Blog BTW 🙂

  • 32 magscar // Jul 24, 2015 at 1:34 PM

    Our Toon

There in lies the dilemma we might want rid BUT do others want to buy ( at our price ), do players want to go to those interested in them and do players contracts let them sit tight on good money ( as I referred to a day or so ago).

Added problem with Obertran, Rivierre and Cabella would be that a return to France ( ost likely destination?) would probably involve not only drop in wages but net salary as well given tax differences there and here on high earners.

There will be movement but for once (refreshingly) are we trying to get positions filled before seeking to move out players once McClaren and team have made their minds upon what he wants?

They are pretty close, does not tell you bonuses though i.e. STaylor gets a 250k bonus every year as a loyalty bonus if he stays with Newcastle, things like that.

magscar- Perez ‘s performances tailed off as the season and his involvement increased. Arguably it became more stressful and he felt less able to cope. There’s absolutely nothing to back those figures up. Reckon they are on closer to half of those, given they were all signed as squad players. No way would we have given Marveaux £60k pw knowing he had an horrendous injury record and an alleged failure of a medical at Liverpool.

I would keep Sissoko. This is copy and pasted from this article relating to created chances in 13/14 season.

    http://eplindex.com/53792/epl-2013-14-most-creative-midfielders-nasri-hazard-coutinho.html

Moussa Sissoko may be a surprise to some but the Frenchman has been a constant figure in Newcastle’s midfield this season despite the Toon’s torrid performance in the league. Called upon to pick up where Yohan Cabaye left off, Sissoko’s stats rival the likes of Mesut Özil and Steven Gerrard. Sissoko created a chance for his team-mates every 39 minutes with an overall chances created total of 77.

Baring in mind Sissoko played on the right wing the majority of this season! It maybe worth looking to unleash him in that position again this season and see if he could replicate that form.

Marveaux and Gouffran signed on the cheap. What that information does not tell you is they waivered the normal high signing on fee for those unique situations given a very little or no transfer fee is required and throw it at the player, normally millions!

Rolan appears in style and goal poaching to be Cisse Mk2 – if he arrives for less that £10m then Cisse departs ( in January ?) for more than £10m.

Fairly straight forward this one – young guy gets play time at NUFC/Premier League, older guy gets pay off in the Sun ( Quatar ? ) or cold if Russia

Club gains, players ( and Agents ! ) gain. Win Win ( unless Cisse wants to stay )

Fair point. Certainly possible to do better than Fer and Mirallas. Reason I picked them was that they are available and got 13 Premier Leage together while Sissoko only got 4, and Fer have similar stats as Sissoko overall.

I think Sissoko and other players who lost their way last season will improve with better coaching but more importantly competition for places.

Excellent point that I did not read earlier. Which is precisely why we want a squad with depth to enable SM to be less predictable and to exercise different options depenDing upon the opposition. Aside from individual players becoming complacent knowing that with a small squad, injuries, suspensions etc that they will be selected.
Possibly why psychologically Perez’s and Sissoko’s performances tailed off. Equally it could be limited selection options and players carrying injuries.

  • 78 Malackay // Jul 24, 2015 at 3:01 PM

Mirallas not good enough? I hope this is some kind of joke? He is quality, starter for Belgium in an AM role should tell you something. Granted he did himself no favours in that penalty situation last year, I would take him in a heart beat.

I can’t imagine those wages are accurate. Isn’t Colo the top earner at the club on c.£55k?

I think we should start looking to offload some of the “fringe players” as part of some of our transfer bids. I usually hate this sort of speculation but examples could include……

    Austin – £10m + Williamson + Vuckic
    Rolan (although I’m not convinced) – £xm + Gouffran
    Bolasie – £5m + Colo & Andy Woodman 🙂

I think the club and a lot of supporters are forgetting we need players with more experience and know the premier league.
Kids with quality maybe fine, but still a gamble.

If those figures are correct and I see no reason to doubt them then as I have previously said unless their contracts are incentivised they can sit tight unless and until something that suits them comes along.

We can call fro them to go but the reality is McClaren will have his work cut out to move them on. Loans with us chipping in for wages is a possibility. Buying out the last year for any in that position is also but costly. Will find out something about Mclaren in this regard as well.

The players we mention are not playing for places in their National sides so only the level of their need for regular football is perhaps a factor.

Over the years we have seen the impact on fringe players at Chelsea and Man City ( better than those we have and with perhaps national prospects) sit out contracts.

The car crash that was Carver’s tenure did not unsurprisingly affect most players but I would excuse the likes of Perez for tailing off ( probably would have in normal circumstances given age and experience). Those senior players like Colo, Sissoko who have been here a while I find harder to excuse. Perhaps competition, a better squad and Black getting inside his head night make him more consistent. Bottom line with him is does he now want to be here. Surely McClaren and co can gauge this and decide whether it is worth persevering with or cashing in?

Perez, who I agree was a rare shining light last season, may well struggle this time round to cement a place. He played last season as much out of necessity as anything else, and while often looking good, occasionally really good, often showing great touch and always working hard, he ended up only one of the better of a bad bunch, as the season dragged on. This season it will be harder to get in the side, you’d think, and harder still to stay there, so we’ll see from this player, who like Aarons has shown great promise, but at this stage still has a lot to prove, with likely fewer opportunities to do it.

Agreed. As I said earlier a better squad should see them used sparingly and with an eye on their development not simply desperation to put a side out.

Problem is that some young players after a first team run struggle to adjust to just cameo roles so McClaren will have to mange this right. Both are players that are and will continue to be coveted by top 6 sides.

With the talk of a new attacker I hope that Armstrong get loaned out for some regular game time rather than the last 10 of games here and there
