It’s A Key Game For Both McClaren And Coloccini Tomorrow

9:18 am, Saturday, July 25th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 18 Comments

It’s good news today that Fabricio Coloccini is now fit and will make his first appearance of the pre-season at Bramall Lane tomorrow afternoon.

The Newcastle captain has been nursing a sore Achilles, and he hasn’t been risked by the coaching staff,  but news today in the local pres that he will play tomorrow – the game has a 1:00 pm kick off time.

Fabricio Coloccini – in action last season

Colo was probably fit enough to play at Portland on Tuesday night, but with the artificial surface it was a good decision not to risk him, and one thing Newcastle must do this season is of course to cut down on the injuries.

It’s an important game for Colo and for Steve McClaren tomorrow, because the future of the Newcastle captain is still up in the air, and it will be interesting to see if he can play well in  pre-season.

Colo had a very poor second half of the season, when Newcastle simply collapsed in those final 19 games, and there seemed minuscule leadership in the side.

We have to remember before that final game against West Ham which we won 2-0 – that Newcastle had taken only 10 points from the previous 18 league games, and in the previous 10 games we had just one point and nine defeats.

This summer the likelihood is that if we bring in another center-back then Colo could be sold – probably to Crystal Palace and Alan Pardew – but that’s all still to be decided.

The other thing that Steve McClaren must decide is who the Newcastle captain will be for next season.

And our first Premier League game is just two weeks tomorrow at home to Southampton.

This will be Newcastle’s fifth pre-season friendly, and here’s the full pre-season schedule and how we have done so far.

    Copy from previous post.
I would rather have both Shakira’s, one the player and the other as a cheer leader!!!!!!!
Could even get Piquet as part of the deal.
    Tongue in cheek like………..

I can’t help thinking that with the midfielders we have, and those we have been linked with, SMc has–for want of a better phrase–a total football fluid mIdfield formation in mind. Gini is an all rounder, SMc seems to view Siem dJ the same, Thauvin and Shaqiri have the same athleticism and all round ability as Sissoko. If ( and this is beyond my tactical ken–please advise if you know) he is set to play a ‘double six’ formation, with a true pivot pairing of Gini and de Jong(?)– GW best player in Holland last year, and in SMc’s view SdJ best player in Holland when he was managing there. This suggests to me a five man fluid midfield, without necessarily specialist defensive or winger roles: that said just guessing!

Any knowledge re this system/SMc’s previous or stated intentions or Tic Tac jiggery-pokery attributed to Cathro/Valencia? I think this still has implications on likely comings and goings.

Right then, thats Colo installed as odds on favourite to pick up an achilles tear, supplemented by an undiagnosable back problem which will see him on a flight to Beunos Aires for a consultation and a period of rehab.

New start, new season, new decisions, new Captain please – someone who can boss the team on the pitch and who will have a presence in most games. Colo has had his time and wants to move on – so he has to be man enough to let someone else take over.
Time for McLaren to lead from the front and set the tone for success – clear decision making would be a start.

I tell you what, guys, if we did get Shaqiri I’d be over the moon. Class player, a huge name and we would probably be on the TV all the time with a lineup of Mitrovic, Aarons, Shaqiri, Gini and Perez

  • 7 Liverpool Mag // Jul 25, 2015 at 9:40 AM

    de Jong too

  • 8 Liverpool Mag // Jul 25, 2015 at 9:40 AM

Although I’m basically over the moon anyway given how things are going

With Shaqiri and Mancinni falling out, we know from Stoke’s attempt that £12m is enough to secure the move – providing we could agree personal terms. As this would pretty much overload our midfield, would it not make sense to sell Sissoko and use that money to fund personal terms over five years? Just a thought. That way we’d still have the money to invest in another CB.

It would be pure folly to play Colo tomorrow- sore achilles…just got off a long haul flight which by all accounts does nowt but aggravate an injury like this. Plus he’s a player who probably doesn’t fancy being pushed out of the club with the prospect of losing his comparatively large salary. Because lets face it, who would pay him anything like what he’s getting on his current contract? Its asking for trouble playing him IMO.

Shakiri would be a class signing and one I’ve been asking us to get after Stoke had a bid accepted. Mancini will end up choosing Santon over Shakiri but that’ll be purely down to the fact that Santon will be classed as HG for any European competitions.

It’s a good shout regarding Sissoko but my preference would be to axe Cabella of given the choice out of the 2. Although sissoko would apparently command a better fee in the market

Shaqiri seems to be moving club alot for a young player…any reason?

  • 17 Bobbybee // Jul 25, 2015 at 10:00 AM

Our toon. Not sure how much we’d raise on Cabella and anyway, let’s face it, it’s only a matter of time before he starts dropping hints about a move to a CL club again. We could kill two birds with one stone.
