Newcastle Already Have Four New Goalscorers In The Side

1:35 pm, Saturday, July 25th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 64 Comments

With Aleksandar Mitrovic signing for us this past week, and with Newcastle now having three midfielders who can also score goals – Gini Wijnaldum, Siem de Jong and Rolando Aarons – maybe we don’t need another striker brought in this summer?

That’s essentially four goalscorers we didn’t have last season,  because Siem and Rolando made only 11 appearance between them in all of last season, with a string of injuries keeping them on the sidelines.

eleksandar mitrovic at SAt. James'Park

Aleksandar Mitrovic can get us some goals

We’ve also got Papiss Cisse, who should have a good season coming up if only because he’s going to be 100% fit after his knee problems,  and we also have Ayoze Perez and Manu Riviere.

Ayoze needs plenty of playing time next season, so he can continue his rapid progress on Tyneside, and we still think Riviere can come through after a poor first season at the club.

The Frenchman needs to rebuild his confidence and have a little bit of luck to get some goals.

We’re sure Steve McClaren and the new coaching staff will help him a lot.

So there’s four strikers we have on board, plus three midfielders who can get us goals.

Maybe we don’t need another striker brought in but concentrate on strengthening the defense with a top center-back coming in to join Chancel Mbemba.

And McClaren can get the best out of some of the center-backs we already have at the club – and with those two new arrivals, plus Jamaal Lascelles – we should be a lot less porous at the back than we’ve been over the last three seasons.

190 goals that we’ve conceded in the last three seasons is about 63 goals average for each season – and remember we only conceded 59 goals when we were relegated back in 2009.

We must have had the worst defensive record in the PL over the last three seasons, so that’s an area that Steve McClaren and company can improve a lot.

In addition to being able to score some goals this season – who knows – we may also be able to stop conceding them next season.

😀

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Ed, you’re forgetting that striker we signed…Gouffran.

  • 2 StevoNorthShields // Jul 25, 2015 at 1:41 PM

Another proven striker would be good, as would two central defenders, with that I think we are looking great HTL

  • 3 Munster Mag // Jul 25, 2015 at 1:46 PM

We wont be getting another striker. Steve wants to play a lone central striker so it will be a winger/striker like Shaqiri if anyone. Only if we sell Cisse, and i dont think that would be a smart move.

  • 4 Tsunki // Jul 25, 2015 at 1:49 PM

    Ashley Out!

  • 5 bobby mango // Jul 25, 2015 at 1:49 PM

I don’t see getting our being another striker of we keep Cisse and him and sdj stay fit. Once Chancel deal is complete we still need another defender then a wide right attacker. Another striker would be a nice to have after those requirements.

  • 6 kilcline // Jul 25, 2015 at 1:49 PM

Reports if we can unload sissoko for 20m we will be in for a winger and Hughes.

  • 7 WWSBRD // Jul 25, 2015 at 1:50 PM

Depends where the ambition is as to whether we need another striker really

  • 8 croftus5678 // Jul 25, 2015 at 1:51 PM

we need a right winger and another cb after mbemba after that its about improving the starting 11 as in hairdryer’s successor.

  • 9 Bambams // Jul 25, 2015 at 1:57 PM

I have just caught up with the latest threads and noticed the Shaqiri link. …..

I would genuinely take the day off work to celebrate if we got this fella.

He is the missing link, the Beardsley type who has that eye for a killer pass.

Would be the best signing since a certain Shearer in my opinion.

Brilliant, well suited to Prem and would love Newcastle fans.
    IMO

  • 10 nut meg // Jul 25, 2015 at 1:57 PM

Why are the Chronicle reporters keep talking about our 3 signings ?? Has Mbemba transfer been confirmed ??

  • 11 croftus5678 // Jul 25, 2015 at 2:01 PM

    @10 nutmeg

not confirmed but pretty much set in stone as everything has been sorted apart from medical results.

  • 12 JDdubai // Jul 25, 2015 at 2:01 PM

If we cant sell Willo or others, cant we loan them to Rangers? Im sure they would take Willo, he would be fine in their league this season.

  • 13 Altamullan // Jul 25, 2015 at 2:02 PM

Wijnaldum. Arrives: 10 July, pm; Medical: 10 July?; Signed: 11 July am. (Less than 24 hrs).

Mitrovic. Arrives: 20 July, eve; Medical: 20 Jul?; Signed: 21 July am. (Less than 18 hours).

Mbemba: Arrives: 23 July, pm; Medical ?; Signed: ? (48 hours and counting).

    Should we be worried?

  • 14 expatmag // Jul 25, 2015 at 2:03 PM

    Nutmeg

I believe he has signed. The club is just waiting for work permit confirmation before officially introducing him.

  • 15 JDdubai // Jul 25, 2015 at 2:04 PM

    WWSBRD @7

I dont think its about amibition – why have 5 CFs when you only play with 1 in the formation?

With Cisse, Riviere and Perez as backup and only playing 1 “proper” CF, why would you get another until 1 of the backup leaves?

If Cisse goes then we will get another, cant see anything happening there til he does.

RW and CB and that will be it I guess until players leave.

Disagree mate arm we only have Cisse who has proven he can score a hat full of goals in the PL but he is hot and cold

Mitrovic has a lot of potential and has scored a lot of goals in Belgium but he may not hit the ground running

Perez is all potential as well exciting but he struggled near the end of last season and hasn’t hit much form so far in preseason. Probably better as a second striker or CAM at the moment anyway imo

Rivi just doesn’t look up to scoring

  • 18 Bambams // Jul 25, 2015 at 2:28 PM

Could we get mexes from Milan. …

Oh my word what a volley !!!!

  • 19 The overrated Frenchman // Jul 25, 2015 at 2:28 PM

How many players can you send out on loan in any given season? I’m wondering about this because we can’t keep bringing people in without moving some out, and it’s going to be hard to find permanent homes for quite a few of the players we really don’t need or want.

  • 20 Ian Toon // Jul 25, 2015 at 2:32 PM

    Rotonda/nearly/ Altamullan- Previous discussion.
There is an element of confusion in talk of Physiotherapy and Sports Psychology. Derek Wright has been with the club for more than 30 years and is well respected . Shearer is on the record for praising him upon recovery from major injuries.
We have lacked the skills of a sports psychology in past seasons and arguably such an individual could have helped Pardew in respect of anger management issues. Just as football skills are honed and developed so players require to work on their mindsets, confidence, retaining focus and objectives, exercising correct options quickly, team awareness, retaining positivity, proactive thinking and body language in a team concept.
Changing sports to rugby – The All Blacks have an emphasis on individual character and leadership with the desire to keep feet on the ground. Given that over the last 100 years they have a win rate in excess of 75 % they are doing some things right.

  • 21 Galwaymag // Jul 25, 2015 at 2:32 PM

Shaqiri not in the inter squad for the game with A.C. Would be a great signing if we could get him.

  • 22 ITUNDERASHELL // Jul 25, 2015 at 2:34 PM

How abouta goal scoring CB or two that can also defend and comfortable with the ball Mbember and the Tunisian Beast.

  • 23 firebug666 // Jul 25, 2015 at 2:35 PM

I think with the new footballing philosophy being introduced to the club some of the players like Cisse, Riviere, Goffran etc will give a better performance.

The fact that we are bringing in some quality players will only lift the team and go a long way to restoring some confidence to both players and fans.

The bigger teams always walk out onto the pitch with swagger because they believe that they will win the game and so rarely lose, when we were walking out last season we had our heads down and looked beaten before the ball was kicked off.

There is a lot of positive feeling around the club at the moment, and a couple of early wins could see our confidence sore.

I will keep faith with the likes of Riviere, Cabella and Gouffran etc, until I see how they perform under McClaren and his coaches, with the ball on the ground and plenty of movement.

    HWTL!

  • 24 mickalfas // Jul 25, 2015 at 2:39 PM

Forget the striker ,sort the defence out now
Spend the rest of the budget on the defence and a winger
    Simples
What we’ve bought up to now guarantees no more than top 15

  • 25 jasper // Jul 25, 2015 at 2:41 PM

All seems quiet so far as a dominant CF is concerned.
The Champions league pre-group stage completes 26/8/15. So it could be that NUFC are hoping to pick up such a player from a club that fails to qualify – or even one that squeezes through, but who know that they will bank the money from the group stage and have no hope of going further. Either way such a club might well be willing to sell before the window closes on 1/9/15.
Celtic and Van Diyk being the obvious candidates.
    Anyone think of any others?

  • 26 mickalfas // Jul 25, 2015 at 2:47 PM

Everyone’s concentrating on the close of the window
Surely the defence needs an overhaul before the season starts imo,we’ve got some tricky fixtures at the sstart of the season

I am one of giving players a fair crack and not writing them off, I am fully behind Cabella getting more time because he certainly has something

But Rivi and Goofy I don’t see it from them, Gouffran disappeared when Cabaye left and Rivi am not too sure can come out of where he is, doesn’t excel anywhere and looks all over the place

  • 28 firebug666 // Jul 25, 2015 at 2:53 PM

I think we are playing Sheffield tomorrow, and that might be a good test for some of the players.

I hope Mitrovic is able to play, he will need time to settle into the team, but a goal or two from him would go a long way to lifting spirits.

I am watching James Tavernier playing for Rangers v Hibs, I have been impressed with him., just scored a great free kick as well. shame how his career has nose dived. Would certainly be a good back up to Janmatt.

Wow what a free kick that was! He played very well against Burnley on Tuesday night too,

  • 30 Liverpool Mag // Jul 25, 2015 at 3:00 PM

With regards to the defence, I think we could be surprised this year by the differences in our defence. With a positive change in our mentality, by attempting to play on the front foot and retain possession; as well as trying to play it out from the back we are going to concede significantly less goals and scoring more.

How many goals have we conceded over the alst few years that have come out of Krul or another defender punting it straight to an opposing player or out of touch and instantly losing possession and going on the back foot instantly.

Oh I don’t know mate, Riviere got in some good positions last season, worked hard in a very poor team, but fluffed all his chances at goal.

I agree he showed little as a lone striker, and was inconsistent, but so was the rest of the team. He had only just come in, and got bit parts to play.

He was also asked to play in a strange position to him, he is defiantly not a lone striker, played better on the left of a front three for Monaco.

I would just like to see what he could offer in a team that tries.

Gouffran was the same, he plays well if the team plays well, but again he was asked to play as a second left back most of the time, I’m sure he was bought as a striker, but never seen him play that role.

He spent most of his time (like the rest) defending, and had little to offer going forward as they seemed to always have an eye on the counter.

I find it hard to judge these players as the whole team, head coaches and backroom staff were abysmal.

I just want to see if they can improve with McClaren and his ilk.

firebug- Certainly some of the lengthy losing runs encountered in recent seasons cried out for a sports psychologist. It’s one thing to instill believe in training sessions and another to put it into practice under crowd pressure and competitive game conditions.
With our abysmal record of youth academy development we need to work on the mental training of youth players as well. Chelsea have won the youth cup 4 times in 6 seasons. Mourinho is a massive believer in sports psychology at all levels. Sherwood is on the record at Villa as seeing the lack of a sports psychologist as the main reason for poor performance. The cynic could say it’s just another excuse by a manager to deflect attention away from a lack of man management.

Rivi maybe give another season too but not at the cost of another player coming in for me. When I see Goofy I just see a poor French version of Jonas

Move coloccini to defensive mid, he can also be cover for central defence. Buy two new central defenders, Mbemba & one more, & il be happy. Only thing else needed is to teach the players how to play one twos & keep possession. That will be mcclaren job

  • 42 Altamullan // Jul 25, 2015 at 3:19 PM

Saw that firebug, but assuming he was just being polite yesterday. Do we have an exact time for it? I will be incredibly relieved if hear confirmation of his signing today. If medical ok, as suggested earlier, and delay due to visa, only technical difference between Mbemba and Mitrovic I can think of is ranking of their respective countries, assuming Serbia are top 50. Which (I think?) matters with new rules on visas. I’m inclined to think they are awaiting some test results, which weren’t necessary for others (see timings in previous post). However, just speculating/worrying.

  • 43 Shadow_Shearer // Jul 25, 2015 at 3:19 PM

U seen him play there ONCE, & you are sayin he is the worst defensive mid you seen!!

  • 44 firebug666 // Jul 25, 2015 at 3:20 PM

    Ian Toon

Well I agree, sports psychology has a big part to play in modern sports. Managers, or Head coaches always have their favourites and will praise them at every opportunity, it’s human nature.

A sports psychologist will work his magic and lift all the players. The way these players need to be pampered makes me sick sometimes, but if you need them to perform, it what you have to do.

Give them a pat on the head, let them lick your hand and they will run out onto the pitch happy and show master what they can do.

But in seriousness when coming back from an injury, of after a bad game they need to be able to talk to someone, get things off their chests and receive some much needed good advice.

Lets hope it all works out this season, over to you Mr Black.

  • 45 Craig_NuFc // Jul 25, 2015 at 3:23 PM

Man Utd seem to be handing their players out for nominal fees, RVP and Nani at about 4 million each. Rafael was really out of favour last year, how would people feel about picking him up for a couple million as Jan back up? now they’ve got Darmian I can’t see him playing at all.

  • 46 Craig_NuFc // Jul 25, 2015 at 3:27 PM

I’d be more than happy if our remaining dealings are
    Enrique- 2mill
    Rafael-2-3 mill
    Adbennour-15 mill

I think that’ll give us a real competitive top half squad to build on with the lads we’ve already got and 20 mill on top of what we’ve already spent sounds about right, not sure we can afford a winger until we offload some crap.

    Ashley Out!

Is this the same Tsunki who wrote of the overwhelming sense of relief when the final whistle went and we had survived in the Premier League. Aside from dusting off the Journey round the Championship and staying up until after midnight to see 3 minutes of the toon game; your above message often repeated is never accompanied by any argument. In short it makes a dispiriting and, in the end, a boring read. I have not previously viewed you remotely as an embittered nutter and predictable dullard. I am curious as to whether you will revert to the sublime and that the ridiculous is merely to ensure that your talents will not be taken for granted.
Anyway, each to his own. I personally plough through the comments sifting the wheat from chaff. At times the chaff is in danger of clogging the whole medium. I now have a “paywall” which keeps much of the riff – raff out.

I continued to struggle understanding why so many continue shouting for Austin. The argument that it worked great with Shearer & Ferdinand doesn’t make much sense to me, as the game has changed so much since then. Playing two CFs together leaves the midfield short and outnumbered putting way to much pressure on the CMs and in turn the defence. We need providers and Shaqiri or Thauvin would be exiting, no doubt.
My dream addition though would be Adnan Januzaj. He is already brilliant at a very young age, has PL-experience, can play anywhere across the midfield and would assumably only get better. He was already becoming more of a bit part player last season than the season before, and with Van Gaal seemingly hell bent on buying world class players for every position, he might fall even further behind in the pecking order this coming season ..
With the Euros coming up we could provide him with the perfect platform to excell and get into a highly competitive Belgium team. Januzaj & Aarons on either side of Mitrovic – the prospect of that almost gives me the chills!

  • 63 rozehnal // Jul 25, 2015 at 5:17 PM

I think 2 more decent signings and we will be hopefully challenging top 8 if not top 6. Shaqiri would be a great signing. Siem De Jong will be one of our star players.

  • 64 nufc 11 // Jul 25, 2015 at 6:58 PM

Can’t understand why we haven’t moved for Michael Dawson he reminds me so much of John Terry a prober defender a leader an organiser loves the tackle reads the game just having him around would develop lascelles leaps and bounds as well the faster Colo and willow are moved on the better.
