Newcastle are willing to give Rolando Aarons a five year improved deal to stay with the club long-term, after his excellent form this pre-season – which is not unlike how he performed for us last season before picking up some serious hamstring injuries that limited him to just six appearances for Newcastle this season.
And just like last year there are reports of some big clubs interested in signing Rolando, but they seem very dubious at best – we hope they are very dubious at best.
Rolando Aarons in action at Bramall Lane yesterday
One such report is in the Metro today where they are saying there is an ongoing contract row continuing at Newcastle.
What contract row?
Rolando was interviewed after the game against the Portland Timbers last Tuesday night, in which he scored two brilliant goals in the second half within two minutes of each other.
And he certainly seemed to be looking forward to the coming season under Steve McClaren, who has a good reputation for bringing talented young players like Aarons through to the first team.
Arsenal are said to be the latest club linked with wanting to sign the 19 year-old Jamaica-born winger, but Newcastle have to get Rolando signed up – and quickly too.
Newcastle’s future is as much dependent on the club signing up top young players as Olivier Kemen and Rolando Aarons, as it is on attracting good new players to the club.
We have been successful in getting Gini Wijnaldum, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Chancel Mbemba (soon) to Newcastle, and now we have to get our top youngsters signed up.
If Rolando did join one of the top clubs said to be after him, he certainly wouldn’t get the first team games he will get for Newcastle next season.
Rolando will also have seen how well Ayoze Perez came on last season when he made 39 first team appearances and seven Premier League goals for Newcastle.
We are confident Newcastle can sign Rolando Aarons to a long term deal, but not sure what exactly is going on with Olivier Keen, whose agent has apparently been in talks with AC Milan.
Signing up these top youngsters is what Newcastle need to do if we are to become a top club in England again.
Here again are those two fantastic goals from Rolando at Portland.
