Immediately after the game yesterday Steve McClaren talked about not knowing whether there will be any new signings by Newcastle this summer, but he changed his tune a bit later on (for the better we may add) and said that he looks forward to one or two new players coming in this week to freshen up the place – so apart from Chancel Mbemba being one of them – it will be interesting to see who else we can get through the door this week.
I would be good if is a top class center-back which is what we are missing at the moment.
Aleksandar Mitrovic – coming back to Newcastle tomorrow
Steve seemed very happy at the way the lads played yesterday, especially in that first half, but the legs weren’t there in the second half – which is hardly surprising when you think they had just returned from Oregon on Thursday.
It seems that lads may have got a direct flight back to England – and since it was around 4,700 miles, that would generally take about nine hours, and on nufcTV today they talked about the 10 hour flight back home – hopefully they chartered a flight back directly to Newcastle – we certainly have the money these days and it would have been worth it.
This is some of what a pleased Steve McClaren said on nufcTV staring with the second goal in as many games for Gini Wijnaldum:
“That’s what Gini Wijnaldum is capable of doing, he can score, he kind of drifts into the box. Siem de Jong is exactly the same from the corner – drifted, unmarked and scores a goal, I’m pleased for both of them.¨
“Gini has came into the group and settled well, that was always key.” “We look forward to one or two more coming in this week, and freshening the place up.¨
“Chancel will have to wait and hopefully by the weekend everything will be sorted out, and I think Aleksandar Mitrovic comes back in on Tuesday.¨
“I’ve got to credit the players for what has been a really tough schedule over the last fortnight in terms of travel games and disruption and then coming to play this game.¨
“Chancel will have to wait and hopefully by the weekend everything will be sorted out and I think Aleksandar Mitrovic comes back in on Tuesday.
McClaren and the coaching team are doing a very good job of bringing the lads together – and hopefully the fans too – so that we can have some very good team spirit next season and a winning attitude about the club.
That’s something that was decidedly missing last season – so that will be a pleasant change.
It would also help to get off to a winning start at home to Southampton on August 9th, but that will be a tough game for the lads.
