Does Cheick Tiote Have A Future At Newcastle?

9:09 am, Tuesday, July 28th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 122 Comments

We haven’t seen Cheick Tiote in pre-season much, and he missed the US trip because of visa problems and has been nursing a slight knee injury which kept him our of the 2-2 draw at Sheffield United on Saturday.

But he did train yesterday with the lads at Benton.

cheick tiote in training

Cheick Tiote – back in training

This is what Steve McClaren has said about Cheick:

“Cheicky is back in training. He had a little niggle on his knee but hopefully he’s back now.”

Cheick hardly played for us last season, and appeared only 12 times before he was injured playing for Ivory Coast in the African Cup of Nations, and missed the rest of the season.

It had been expected he would be sold this summer, and that still might happen, but it seems up in the air at the moment.

Steve McClaren knew him when the 29 year-old was in the FC Twente team that won the Dutch Championship for the only time back in 2010 – just before he was signed by Newcastle for £3.5M.

It’s also starting to look like the Newcastle central midfield could be crowded next season,  with players like Siem de Jong, Jack Colback, Moussa Sissoko, Vurnon Anita and Gini Wijnaldum challenging for places.

Let us know if you think Cheick Tiote has a future at the Tyneside club.

I think his future is most likely going to be used like he was at Twente, which is to play for the last 20 minutes or so to preserve a lead.

  • 2 firebug666 // Jul 28, 2015 at 9:22 AM

I think for the last couple of seasons he has been mentally wearing that Arsenal shirt. If he cannot be 100% focussed for the team then it’s time to get shot of him.

  • 3 lesh // Jul 28, 2015 at 9:27 AM

Whilst it’s only right that current players should be assessed by McClaren, time has been and is becoming precious.

With his back against the wall, McClaren and Charnley in particular should have considered the opinions of others who could offer a qualified comment.

We’re all well aware who’s not up to the standard required for a serious attempt a moving the Club forward and surely those weaknesses could have been addressed with good signings. Should the ‘weaker’ players prove to be better than thought or previously played, the fine, we’d have gone some way to adding more strength in depth to a seriously week squad.

However, Ashley and Charnley are perhaps too budget conscious to allow that.

wdfta you will need more then your fingers crossed with our back four did you not learn anything from last season we cannot defend

Catchy…are you still there? Not in Aarhus but on the blog 😀

  • 6 pawl250 // Jul 28, 2015 at 9:29 AM

I think Tiote should stay. Certainly not a bad player to have in the midfield when you need to defend a lead.

He is not the best player the world either mind.

Do not understand why people expect another 5 signings or what have you. 2 more max would be more like it, if any at all. Unless we sell players.

We need to sell Williamson (500k-1m), sell Cisse (6-7m). Try and offload Marveaux (loan or sell for 1m or less), Vuckic (loan or sell for 1m or less)

    Total approx 8m

Bring in a Austin(14m), Van Dijk (7m) and a young right back with potential (2m).

    Total approx 23m

    Then we have a team.

  • 7 Jib // Jul 28, 2015 at 9:29 AM

    Tiote knows and trusts Macca.
He the sort of player who needs to know exactly wat his role is game by game
I got the feeling that he and Pardew for the last few seasons weren’t seeing eye to eye.
Could be like a ne…………….. whoops nearly said it !!!

  • 9 jamesnufc86 // Jul 28, 2015 at 9:31 AM

His recklessness has become more of a hindrance than anything recently, shame because he was a monster in that midfield for a period, it really put me off also when he was out injured and called us a “shit team”. That’s his mates he talking about and the club he plays for, it annoyed me

  • 10 Bambams // Jul 28, 2015 at 9:32 AM

    Canny goal by Vuckic…..
I still would like to see this lad have a run of games now Mac is here. Cup games perhaps
Would rather we at least ensured we have given him a proper look over before kicking him out. He hasn’t been listed – I don’t think….

Also new contract for Aarons just to be safe.

    Our team would be

    Janmaat – Mbemba – V Dijk – Haidara
    Wijnaldum – Tiote
Sissoko – De Jong – Aarons

Young Rb – STaylor – Coloccini – Dummett
    Anita – Colback
    Obertan – Perez – Cabella

    Satka – Lascelles – Good – Ferguson
    Bigirmana – Abeid
    Riviere – Vuckic? – Gouffran

    If Vuckic doesn’t leave.

  • 16 one fine day // Jul 28, 2015 at 9:37 AM

    Agree 100% on that.
For once it will be good for sissoko to know they have to perform week in week out and not just think they walk into the team every week .
When was the last time we could say that ?

  • 17 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jul 28, 2015 at 9:38 AM

  • 18 will die for the toon army // Jul 28, 2015 at 9:39 AM

This team is a Top 6 team with every one fit and on form:
    …………………………….de Jong
Darlow, Durmett, Colback, Cabella, Perez, Aarons, Cisse.

THAT IS MY DREAM TEAM. Mcclaren make it happen.

  • 19 firebug666 // Jul 28, 2015 at 9:40 AM

    From Previous

Good players were hard to find in last years squad as the whole set-up from top to bottom was total garbage.

We may or may not have a few gems in there, but if I was to judge so far on this pre-season I would lean more towards may not.

It will take time for McClaren to stamp his mark on what was a pi$$ poor squad of players, and the three we have brought in (IMO) are not enough.

I 100% agree with your post @ 28, I think the worry was the phrase Ashley used when he said “the best value pound for pound”.

When he said that I was worried, and alarm bells were ringing, but I have also been surprised by these signings.

I would have thought McClaren could have assessed this squad from watching a few video’s of last years games, and I’m sure he did, but things are still just dragging along.

The massive clear out we all expected, has not happened, and three in so far is a joke, we need at least six in and a shed load out.

  • 20 pawl250 // Jul 28, 2015 at 9:42 AM

Big, strong, good in the air, still not bad on the ground. Abit of pace.

I think he would be a decent contrast to Mbemba who is supposedly good in the air but very quick on the ground.

He is also in our price range around 7m unlike Abdennour who is quoted 15m or more I mean people GET REAL!

Austin at 14m is a push, but if we sell Cisse for 6-7m it would make the difference alot let and reduce the blow. But with the team above we could end up in top 8 easy.

Solid team, and could keep it together for a few years given ages of players.

AND key we would have decent depth within our squad for the inevitable injuries/bans.

  • 21 GEORDIE69 // Jul 28, 2015 at 9:43 AM

Just a thought for concern will die for the toon army, who is supplying the crosses for your two similar target men centre forwards?

    Bam bams
Great goal shades of ben arfa
Problem is he clearly needs regular game time to get his form and confidence up.
I’d look to loan him to a championship side til January see if he can step up from the Scottish Sunday league.
    He def has something

  • 24 Transfer Sage // Jul 28, 2015 at 9:47 AM

It’s great to see us linked with strikers and attacking players but we really need another defender or two and to make sure we have a solid, reliable defensive midfielder.

As the saying goes….strikers win you games, defenders win you titles.

  • 25 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jul 28, 2015 at 9:47 AM

pawl…the price shouldn’t be the problem as you say!

I am just not convinced he’s good enough…the SPL is hard to judge by. It’s no better than the danish superliga.

  • 26 Bambams // Jul 28, 2015 at 9:48 AM

I know that quite a few on here don’t rate him and I am not saying they are wrong. I just don’t think since he has been with us we have had him in a team playing to his strengths. Loan moves can work both ways, just would like to see him have a run before we let him go.
You know how it works John Dahl Tommason comes to mind.
Just my opinion he could come good under the correct coaches.

  • 27 will die for the toon army // Jul 28, 2015 at 9:48 AM

An against selling Cisse Tiote and Colo. They r really needed in this transition stage from Pardew to Mcclaren.

Sell Marvuex Orbertan Willo and Goufrann to balance books.

  • 28 Fostino // Jul 28, 2015 at 9:49 AM

    The squad appears full.

Is this lascalles lad any good? Though he was to be our c.b. This year and to cover r.b.

I think mcclaren wants austin as his new no.9 which means goodbye cisse first I’d say.

As for getting a winger..I think we’d have to see a goofy or an obertan or a marvo ho or 2 of tbe 3 leave before we get another. Quite fr as nkly all three coukd go along with cabella and I’d gladly give arrons a new contract, give Armston a shot and sign townsand

Unfortunately it appears hard to get rid of Newcastle deadwood players as there prob on better wages then any potential buyer can offer them and therefore there’s no interest. C.b. does appear to be a big problem still judging by pre season and ser pieces. Willo is well past it and colo don’t inspire much confidence any more. ..brings me back to first question…is lascalles any good?

  • 29 Bambams // Jul 28, 2015 at 9:50 AM

  • 31 will die for the toon army // Jul 28, 2015 at 9:52 AM

Janmatt and Haidara in this system the crosses are made by the full back and are covered by the DCM or CBs. Who stay back all the time. We really need a ball winner like Tiote to be at his best. Mbemba and Colo to cover wen necessary.

  • 32 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jul 28, 2015 at 9:54 AM

I agree it does seem damn near impossible to offload our deadwood, but that doesn’t mean they should be registered by us!

Tell ’em that and find their replacements. Playing ’em has done us no good in the past.

  • 33 Fostino // Jul 28, 2015 at 9:54 AM

Ed..we have abeid marvo and bigi in cm too

  • 34 Fostino // Jul 28, 2015 at 9:56 AM

I doudt Ashley will sanction keeping unregistered players on the payroll. I reckon some them woukd happily hang around too to pick up the pay and wait till out of contract to pick up a contract

  • 35 firebug666 // Jul 28, 2015 at 9:57 AM

The easiest way is as Jesper said do not register them to play, just drop them into the development squad and sit back and see how long it takes their agents to find them another club.

And if they are not playing first team football they will be only on a basic wage.

  • 36 Fostino // Jul 28, 2015 at 9:59 AM

Someone like Willo is orib in 20k a week…no championship club will touch that and he’s not ol standerd. I won’t even discuss colo 70k. Same applies to marvo..goofy and obertan. Wages in excess of 20 k at least

  • 37 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jul 28, 2015 at 10:01 AM

There really aren’t anything else to do…we still need to add 3-4 players more regardless of what happens to our deadwood!

  • 40 Sir Braveheart // Jul 28, 2015 at 10:12 AM

There won’t be any signings after Mbemba.

    I’m okay with this.

Three top class signings – all three lads wouldn’t be out of place in a 3rd-6th placed team – and kept our key players. Thats good business.

McClaren said when he took over he was looking at three windows to overhaul the squad.

Three quality signings this summer. One or two in January after he’s had time to fully assess the squad and knows which players are going to be on board with his vision and who isn’t up to it, and another two to three signings next summer.

If we’re sat here this time next year having made six to seven acquisitions of the calibre of these three so far, I’d be happy.

I know we all want the squad fixing this window. Its not going to happen. No team is built overnight, it takes time, and three windows is a reasonable time frame to ask for.

We’re not getting any more this summer. In my mind we’ve still moved forward. You might say “not by enough” but forward progress is still forward progress. The squad we have with the management team we have is good for 10th this season. Thats a step forward.

Strip out some of the fringe players in January when clubs are desperate and more likely to buy, or next summer. Everyone gets a clean slate so give them the next few months to show they can step up with proper coaching or let them move on.

  • 41 jayphoto // Jul 28, 2015 at 10:18 AM

Apparantly Obertans on £28,000 per week. They’ll have to prise that contract out of his cold dead hands.
Willo has played alot in preseason, more than anyone! Shop window placement or first team chance?

  • 42 jamesnufc86 // Jul 28, 2015 at 10:23 AM

Ha ha @39 – not at all, 20 – 20 vision, just found it very disrespectful, given that he was a large contributer to that “shit team” for a good while

  • 43 jayphoto // Jul 28, 2015 at 10:23 AM

Tiote takes 5 or 6 games to get upto speed. Got to say though when he plays well the whole team played well. He was actually immense when he played before xmas when he had the captaincy. Really took to it!
Not sure what mcClaren thinks of him. Apparantly recommended him to Newcastle but didn’t play him at Twente.
Similarly rumour had it that it was McClaren that told Kinnear Douglas wasn’t upto premier league standards so doubt we’ll be seeing him

  • 44 bettyswallocks // Jul 28, 2015 at 10:28 AM

  • 45 Mag52 // Jul 28, 2015 at 10:29 AM

    Good laugh. Thanks for that.
Still on the subject of Tiote, he must realize that any chance he might have had of playing for Arsenal has now gone, and hopefully he’ll focus on putting in a season of good performances for us.

  • 46 Mr Funk // Jul 28, 2015 at 10:29 AM

I agree with the sentiment that it will be difficult to shift the “deadwood”. They are all on good contracts and even if you did not register them, i think most of them would sit out their final year of their contract.

I guess the only option would be to loan out those players with the club taking the player contributing to some of the wages. This way it could free up some money to pay someone else.

  • 47 Bobbybee // Jul 28, 2015 at 10:29 AM

We all know what we need, but in life you rarely get what you want. So far, we’ve spent 35 million. In the past, we would have spent that much on ten players – providing we would ever have spent that much, that is. We’ve been down the path of buying bulk cheaply and this is why we’ve got so many players we need to move on. This time we’ve bought three players who will vastly improve our team, not just add to the dross. This is the way forward. Next two windows we can add more quality and gradually let go of the past. We might still add more, we don’t know – nobody does if they’re honest. I’m not expecting a top six finish yet, that’s further down the line for us. We’ve suffered this last eight years, don’t expect miracles overnight or you’ll only be disappointed – again. We’ve shown the type of quality we’re aiming for with these three, which is a good start. Personally I too would have bought another CB, but we’ve waited this long. I can wait another season to see real, genuine improvement.

  • 48 Mr Funk // Jul 28, 2015 at 10:31 AM

Also, as some people have mentioned before, it seems like the club will need to shift some players out before anymore will be coming in.

mickalfas forwards big improvement……. midfield massive improvement…… back 4 none

  • 59 firebug666 // Jul 28, 2015 at 11:10 AM

I can give you my opinion:

Going forward we look in much better shape, Wijnaldum and SDJ are both intelligent players and can spread the play, Aarons has pace and will skin most defenders in the league, and with Mitrovic coming in we look set to be a force, so the chances are we will get more goals this season.

At the back…….Well so far it’s more of the same from last season, as yet we have not seen Mbemba in the team, but I think with him a Coloccini we will have the best available defence. If they stay fit I could see them improving us at the back, the key will be to keep Williamson out.

All in all we need another CB as a matter of urgency, but we do look a little better going into this season.

  • 60 DaraghL // Jul 28, 2015 at 11:12 AM

    mickalfas // Jul 28, 2015 at 11:00 AM

Just how much improvement can we expect from the new regime, with mostly the same players?
    Anyone with a realistic assessment?

We could have seen an immediate improvement without any signings for 2 reasons:

    1) New Coaching Staff – It was clear to see that Carver and Stone were not up to the task. We now have a more experienced manager who has brought it a strong backroom staff with one of Europe’s most highly regarded young coaches. This alone would improve the squad.

    2) The “like a new signings” – We struggled so much with injuries last year, Cisse was never fit, Tiote constantly out, Taylor/De Jong/Aarons hardly kicked a ball. It looks like we will have a large majority of the above back prior to the first game. This will be a significant boost, even if they are not in the starting 11 they create competition which was not evident in the matchday squads towards the end of the season.

The 3 players we have signed are talented first team players in positions which required strengthening. They are here to improve the squad and not add to it. Whereas in previous seasons the likes of Obertan, Marveaux, Colback, Riviere etc were signed as squad players.

To say we have signed 3 players and other teams have signed ‘X’ is pointless. The club needs quality over quantity to improve again.

The best example of how one player can improve a side is Sanchez. Arsenal fans were calling for 4/5 players. Sanchez came in and the whole team looked better right down to the young players.

I am optimistic that we will do better than last season; however I still believe further recruitment is required. That said, I would be willing to wait for the right players as I don’t want to see any panic buys like Affelay or Ballotelli being signed.

    mickalfas @ 56

    That’s an interesting question.

I asked Lil (him being a coach) whether we would see a noticeable change. He thought we would and almost immediately.

Personally I think it may take quite a few games before we see a noticeable change.

Field Marshall Graf von Moltke said along the lines of ‘no plan of operations extends with any certainty beyond the first contact with the main hostile force’ which is what we will all know in a few weeks time.

Any thing from Soccer Sauce abt Austin.

  • 65 jayphoto // Jul 28, 2015 at 11:22 AM

personally think even without the new players we were probably on the paper the 10th strongest squad in the league last year.
Add to that Darlow, Lascelles and De Jong who didn’t play last year aswell as the pace that a fit Aarons will bring. with Wijnaldum, Mbemba and Mitrovic and I think every manager under Southampton would take our squad. Don’t really rate Pardew and he had us around 9th without getting the best from our more talented individuals.
Perez a year older and a year more adapted. He looked very tired at the end of the season and needed a rest too.
Juries out with cabella and Riviere. Personally feel Riviere can do a job as a back up to Aarons on the left wing. He’s been used out of position so far. Has never been a target man. Cabella in france was a little wizard. If McClaren plays how he did at derby then we should see a better Cabella!
To be honest a team of 4-3-3
    Janmaat Mbemba Colo Haidara
    Tiote Gini
    De Jong
    Sissoko Mitrovic Aarons
with a bench of the likes of colback, laselles, dummett, cabella, perez, cisse, Riviere is on paper probably on par with 6th place spurs/Liverpool./Southampton.
Just up to the manager to get them playing

  • 66 jayphoto // Jul 28, 2015 at 11:30 AM

Also don’t understand this Austin and Mitrovic are too similar talk to play with each other.
They are nothing alike. Mitrovic is an almost target man. He’s similar in style to Ibrahimovic. Strong, big , aggressive etc. Maybe even a little similar to big Duncan ferguson (better on the floor than people gave credit for)
Austin from what I saw was similar to cisse. Complete goal poacher. Good timing and positions. Didn’t look that strong or aerial though. Personally think we would need a quicker striker to play off Mitrovic, but definitely don’t think Austin and Mitrovic play the same game or take up the same positions on the pitch.
We have the centre midfielders to probably play a successful 4-1-2-1-2 diamond if McClaren doesn’t go with 4-3-3. If im honest I’m not sure Austin is that much better than Cisse though

  • 67 Slank // Jul 28, 2015 at 11:34 AM

    Jay @ 65

I totally agree with what you said.

The real unknown element is whether the past has been removed by McClaren and his coaching team and they have now instilled a new belief and confidence in the players.

Without confidence and self-belief new players are not in themselves going to turn the team around.

So far the coaching team seem to be saying and doing all the right things but the proof will be on the pitch.

  • 68 kilcline // Jul 28, 2015 at 11:37 AM

2 signings this week will be Mbemba and Toney.

Don’t think we will sign another cb unfortunately, I really hope Dummet steps up and becomes our Carragher.

Got told Austin didn’t want to move north, guess money talks, I would like him here but feel a Bellamy type striker would suit us better.

  • 69 jayphoto // Jul 28, 2015 at 11:40 AM

@slank – agree with that! Got a feeling we might start slowly too. Maybe a point in the opening 3 games. It’ll take more than 1 preseason to change a whole clubs mentality! Hopefully the fans give them time. Personally think we’re 1 top centrehalf away from actually being a very good side on the level of spurs, Liverpool and Southampton. Before we had pardew and then carver trying to ram square pegs into round holes meaning we never really saw the best of the technical players.

  • 70 jayphoto // Jul 28, 2015 at 11:40 AM

it’ll be like 24 new signings 😉 – and willo

  • 71 jayphoto // Jul 28, 2015 at 11:41 AM

triple raid of Hull for Chester, Brady and Hernandez and we’re sorted!

  • 72 Toon-Barmy // Jul 28, 2015 at 11:47 AM

Loan deal agreed for Adam Armstrong.

  • 73 hibbit // Jul 28, 2015 at 11:47 AM

jayphoto not a bad shout they could all do a job not sure of the cost

  • 74 jayphoto // Jul 28, 2015 at 11:50 AM

@hibbit – think Brady is signing for Norwich and Hernandez for Torino!
Apparantly we’re sniffing around Chester but I don’t believe it. His price is 10m but he’s under 6ft and we’ve just taken on Mbemba who is also under 6ft. Imagine any centreback will be a 6″3+ type. Dragovic would be nice. James Tomkins has always impressed me when I’ve seen him too

  • 75 Menelauos // Jul 28, 2015 at 11:51 AM

For the last time I appreciate the optimism. But a back line which has Mbemba and Collo in it won’t work in the premier league. With tall strong strikers up against them it will fall apart. Sell Staylor and buy a big Cb, Matip, Abdennour, or Rudiger would do it.

  • 76 Slank // Jul 28, 2015 at 11:52 AM

I think most on here would agree that Armstrong needs a loan deal. He would never have progressed as the 80th minute substitute.

With his absence does this mean there are more reasons to get Austin as we only have Cisse and Riviere as backup to Mitrovic ?

  • 77 jayphoto // Jul 28, 2015 at 11:55 AM

Think I read somewhere that AA would be at a ligue 1 side till January and then a championship side after.
Coventry not a bad shout for him. Tony Mowbray is the manager there. Plays out n out attack and his teams usually score a lot of goals and create a lot of chances. They also ship goals but Coventry losing every game 5-4 isn’t going to hurt Armas reputation or development if hes getting amongst the goals

  • 78 Slank // Jul 28, 2015 at 11:56 AM

    Menelauos @ 75

Your tall, strong strikers would have a field day against us when Mbemba and Matip or Abdennour went of the ACON for a month in the middle of the season.

  • 79 YoungMagpieFromBurnley // Jul 28, 2015 at 11:56 AM

No because we have Perez aswell.

  • 80 DaraghL // Jul 28, 2015 at 12:00 PM

Chester is going to West Brom deal agreed for £8m. Not worth it in my opinion.

As an Irishman, I can’t talk up Brady anymore! He has a wand of a left foot which he has proved in the premiership. He’s a bit like R.Taylor though whereby he hasn’t got a position nailed down. Moves between left back and left mid. Looks set for Norwich; although with Aarons and Haidara as left mid/wing he could provide competition for both. Would swoop in!

Hernandez didn’t look up to scratch in the prem unfortunately. So I would pass on him.

  • 81 Slank // Jul 28, 2015 at 12:01 PM

He played upfront last season and did well but it was more because there really was no one else but that doesn’t say he will not be used that way again.

  • 82 beefman13 // Jul 28, 2015 at 12:04 PM

It looks like three in, not enough, players have to leave this club as well but the usual faces are still here, they are not good enough simple as, if we start getting injuries again then we will go down the same route as the previous two seasons, if Wijnaldum picks up a long term then what do we have in the middle, Colback n Anita, do me a favor a couple of bantamweights, no protection at all for the defence, Mclarens tone has started to change and for me he sounds like Pardew already, mixed signals all the time.

  • 83 nightfa11 // Jul 28, 2015 at 12:04 PM

i see we made a bid for milans Niang?

good player.. but the more i think about.. we’re only signing 20, 21, 22 year olds.. they have potential to be world class, which is good..but we will only “rock the league” if those youngsters stay together for the next 5, 6 years.. which i dont think will happen, cos as i said..success wont come soon..and players are “hungry”.. to keep them here, we need to be a top 4 side in 2 years time.. and for that we need a couple of quality players, at their prime, who played for a big team..asap..

  • 84 kilcline // Jul 28, 2015 at 12:11 PM

That should be our priority in terms of signings, one from the top 3.

  • 85 Menelauos // Jul 28, 2015 at 12:18 PM

  • 89 jayphoto // Jul 28, 2015 at 12:19 PM

Think the mere appointment of McClaren meant we were sticking to that under 26 policy. Hes a manager who’s most credited for developing young players. The appointment of Cathro cemented this further as again that is where he is credited the strongest.
Think we need a 27/28 year old centreback in his prime. A lot have mentioned Shawcross. He’d never come but he’d be ideal. Lescott on a free last season would have been shrewd, he had a fine season.
Similarly Ashley Williams and Jose Font looked really solid defenders.

  • 90 Menelauos // Jul 28, 2015 at 12:22 PM

Neither Williams or Fonte will move to us.
Both play for sides higher up the table and are first team regulars.

  • 91 will die for the toon army // Jul 28, 2015 at 12:28 PM

  • 92 The Newcastle Armchair // Jul 28, 2015 at 12:28 PM

While dragovic would be nice, he’s not exactly your tall defender we need at only 2cm taller than chancel

  • 93 EllaGuru // Jul 28, 2015 at 12:33 PM

I think that second CB we should be looking for must have PL experience. Mbemba, for all his potential needs someone with a calming influence beside him so that he can develop.
Although not at the same level, look at what happened to Yanga-Mbiwa. The lad had loads of potential, but we shot his confidence. Now he is off, has Champions League under his belt, and will no doubt only get better with experience…

  • 94 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jul 28, 2015 at 12:33 PM

Think we still need a young (maybe not 20) non African CB with great vision.

Give me more confidence to keep Colo. Jst partner him with Mbemba we will find a way how to deal with Corners and Aerial ability. For corners send back Austin De Jong and Mitrovic to deal with them. Jst like Shola and Caroll did it in Championship.

  • 98 jayphoto // Jul 28, 2015 at 12:48 PM

@the Newcastle armchair – sorry, thought he was taller than that! Think I’ve got him confused with Khacheridi when I watched Kiev last year

  • 99 lochinvar // Jul 28, 2015 at 12:51 PM

Liverpool posted a picture of Emre Can, Philippe Coutinho and Christian Benteke on their Twitter account along with the message: “Adam Lallana can’t wait to link up with ‘world class’ talent waiting back at Melwood.” However, the original picture also featured Mario Balotelli before he was cropped out. (Metro)

If Balotelli’s finished at Liverpool and whatever happens please keep this idiot away from SJP – no way do we need or want Red rejects.

  • 100 jayphoto // Jul 28, 2015 at 12:55 PM

mbembas leap makes him aerially taller than Williamson to be honest! Think a bigger CB is needed though. Teams are cottoning onto the fact that bigger, aerially stronger physical strikers ie: Kane, Costa, Pelle were really troubling defences. Liverpool, Everton, Spurs, Chelsea, Southampton, Watford and Swansea will all lead with big centreforwards. Man United rumoured to be looking for a more powerful striker like Llorente or Lewandowski also.
Noticed a lot of these expensive new breed centre halfs like Mangala, Lovren, Sakho,Rojo despite costing a fortune look absolutely terrified when they come up against big strikers! Even Fazio and Mertesacker who both top 1.92m weren’t all that dominant aerially.

  • 101 nut meg // Jul 28, 2015 at 1:04 PM

Take a look at this player, see what you think.A P/L type CB imho.

  • 102 Ian Toon // Jul 28, 2015 at 1:05 PM

Williamson is at best a Championship player but I do not agree with him being booed as he was at Sheffield United on Sunday. I would like to think we can bring in another CB with pace and steel before August 9th. . In any event booing your own player surely never does anything for his confidence.
Mike Williamson is not the worst CB to pull on the black and white shirt at least he is a trier. Jean-Alain Boumsong anyone.
Its only a couple of years ago our fans were calling not completely ironically to “get Iron Mike on the plane”. In case you’ve forgotten or struggle to believe it now, that was the plane to Brazil, for the World Cup. Williamson is limited, that’s all. He’s at the club because he’s a big lad who attacks the ball in the air, as anyone would understand who’d seen our capitulation in the first half at Everton last season with Mbiwa ( Munster will remember) and Coloccini playing centre-back, neither of whom can do that job. I would rather he wasn’t a first choice but we need someone like himation pace and passing ability. In fact not at all like him. At best he should be fourth choice.
Maybe some are trying to force him out, if that’s the case they need to have a look at our squad . Mbemba needs to be awarded a work permit then we apparently have a centre-half coming in but one is not enough with the injury prone fragile Steven Taylor, Coloccini on the downward slope of his career and various full-backs who can do a job in the middle in a crisis.

  • 103 s4newc // Jul 28, 2015 at 1:10 PM

We should also be looking at Steven Caulker from QPR. He is 23 years old and has good premier league experience; undoubtedly he would sure up our leaky defense.
    Janmaat Caulker Mbemba Haidara
    Colback Wijnaldum
    Sissoko De Jong Aarons

This would be a very good team, in addition theirwould be plenty of options to come off the bench:
Cabella, Ayoze, Tiote, Coloccini, Dummet, Darlow, Austin?, Cisse. etc.

  • 107 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jul 28, 2015 at 1:30 PM

Was just looking at the transfers so far this window and we are not really setting the league a light!

We have a long way to go…both in signing and in shipping players out (which for some reasons haven’t happened at all)

If this is what we get then I’ll say we’ll finish 10 at best! Other clubs are really making the best out of the situation.

  • 108 Noel Worst // Jul 28, 2015 at 1:45 PM

Chester to West Brom. Some on here were advocating us going for him, a CB that stands at 5’10” and doesn’t make up for that by having pace, power, or an above average reading of the game – just another that’s going to join the list of Mitrovic’s victims this year.

  • 109 Jib // Jul 28, 2015 at 1:49 PM

terencelim ——Looks like another awful transfer window for the club then.

I take it that the club to which you refer is Sunderland

  • 110 DaraghL // Jul 28, 2015 at 1:57 PM

I would have taken Caulker 2 years ago as I thought he looked like he had potential; however he has now been part of a relegated teams defence twice and has not stood out. Would not want him at this club.

Jesper I would disagree. Three very solid investments who will strengthen our starting 11. Not many others have bought as well. Buying 10 players won’t solve our problem. Buying 4/5 of the right players will. Were on course for that.

As for getting rid of the squad players….need somebody to bid first. “Williamson anybody, £1 no? £0.50?”

  • 111 Jib // Jul 28, 2015 at 2:01 PM

I quoted an Associated Press comment attributed to Lee Charnley in late May (I can’t be arsed to look for it)

In it he said that the club will not talk to or even listen to other clubs about outgoings until we have finished with our purchases.

Seems like he’s sticking to his word.

  • 112 check the toastie // Jul 28, 2015 at 2:03 PM

Used to love Tiote, however over the last two years he has become lost in a sh*te team. He may come good if given a specific role to play. Basically win ball give it to a more talented player as quick as possible.

  • 113 Noel Worst // Jul 28, 2015 at 2:12 PM

    Check the toastie

That’s always been his remit, but he can’t help get above his station and dwell on the ball, disrupting any fluidity, doing numerous pirouettes until he gets himself in to trouble and loses the ball in a dangerous position, either by a wayward pass backwards or being tackled, his other favourite is going for a Hollywood pass that doesn’t come close to it’s intended recipient. Him and Sissoko need to be brought crashing down to reality, the pair would begin the season on the bench for me. It’d have the desired effect on Sissoko I’m sure, not so convinced Tiote is hungry as he once was though.

  • 117 Rotonda heights // Jul 28, 2015 at 2:28 PM

caulker has got relegated with 2 different clubs 2 years running, he’s not comfortable in possession and if we need a ball playing alternative cb to willo he aint the man.

  • 118 gonufc (Newcastle United Sports Direct Advertising Club) // Jul 28, 2015 at 2:35 PM

I saw people talking about Shawcross on an earlier thread. I’m shocked anyone would want him. He cannot pass the ball and would be Williamson mk.2.

If Mclaren wants any kind of passing/ build up play in the team (the thing Pardew never seemed to work on) then Shawcross would be abysmal.

Anyway, apparently we’re getting a free bus pass with Mbemba. So that’s something.

  • 119 jayphoto // Jul 28, 2015 at 2:40 PM

Caulker not only has been relegated twice, but both times in teams that absolutely just shipped goals.
Interesting couple of stats but QPR had the most chances created against them last season.
The season before that this stat belonged to Cardiff. He played in both sides. Not saying that makes him a bad player but 2 straight seasons of absolute hidings has a way of changing a players mentality.

  • 120 Boot Boy // Jul 28, 2015 at 2:42 PM

I still have hope for the lad. Think if rain macs tactics are a 433 type set up then a destroyer who plays the simple pass on to others is what he does best.
Injury and trying to do too much for a team void of anybody else demanding the ball really showed he cant carry us forward as a threat but
as the beast who breaks up play and bullys the
other team there is no better at the club.
With all the other mids at the club if he is sold would we replace him?
I would rather keep him and pray we see a sniff of the old bone crunching form he showed in that first season when his job was simple get the ball then get it to dream boat lol

  • 121 Noel Worst // Jul 28, 2015 at 2:43 PM

In lieu of no available, affordable, PL experienced CB, Van Dijk is our man. Powerful, quick, supremely classy on the ball, CL experience and already in close proximity. Being Dutch will help too playing alongside Janmaat and Krul.

£10m for Celtic’s best defender, playmaker, ST and set-piece-taker 😆

Only snag is we’ll have to wait until the latter days of the window, as it’s widely regarded he has an agreement with Celtic to help them qualify for CL before leaving.
