Lee Charnley Working Very Hard On New Signings

3:19 pm, Tuesday, July 28th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 24 Comments

One of the things that Lee Charnley is good at and effectively made his name at Newcastle for – is signing players for Newcastle, and he has been the man who has gone in and negotiated deals on behalf of Newcastle, and that was a long time before he was appointed the Managing Director about 15 months ago.

We still cannot believe  we have got Gini Wijnaldum and Aleksandar Mitrovic through the door this summer, and we should be able to sign Chancel Mbemba by the end of this week – so that’s £35.5M spent so far.

That’s a good start but we still need maybe three more players signed this summer.

Lee Charnley – negotiating for our transfer targets

There are also reports today that Newcastle will finally make a bid for top striker target Charlie Austin – maybe for around £13.5M – so if we do that and are successful in getting Charlie through the door,  that would be close to £50M spent this summer – so far.

Bob Moncur is on the Newcastle Board and we would have expected he would have been involved with some of the transfer dealings – in at least identifying players – but it doesn’t look that way by reading his column in the Chronicle today.

Bob is really a figure-head at Newcastle having been a great captain of the club when we last won something back in 1969, when we won the Inter-City Fairs Cup.

This is some of that Bob has said today about the work Charnley is doing for Newcastle this summer:

¨I know that Managing Director Lee Charnley has been working very, very hard behind the scenes and I know how frustrating it can be when you work hard but don’t get the final act of a transfer finished.¨

¨You have to congratulate Lee on the two deals he has signed so far and we hope to welcome a third in Mbemba.¨ ¨Most people I talk to are quite pleased with the signings so far. Lee Charnley had a difficult time when people were asking him: “When are we signing players?”, myself included.¨

¨But he’s stepped up and got the players. There’s always two sides to every story on transfers. You look from afar and think: ‘That shouldn’t be too difficult.’¨ ¨However, it is difficult and there’s a lot of factors out there and it’s not a case of saying: “I want him – there’s £14M.”

¨It doesn’t happen like that sadly, but 10/10 to Lee for getting those deals done and get the players here.¨

If Newcastle are able to bring say six good players through the door this summer, then it’s hats off to Lee Charnley – who has done all the leg-work with the difficult negotiations.

Lee has proved himself very good at signing players for Newcastle United, and maybe this can be his most successful summer ever.

Sounds good to us.

Comments welcome.

Take that 50m and subtract the total amount we got for Cabaye, Debuchy, Mbiwa and Santon and how much is remaining?

  • 2 Derek // Jul 28, 2015 at 3:27 PM

sorry that should be 35.5m, better not count any chickens 😉

not sure there are any premier league cb options of there that wouldn’t be grossly overpriced that would actually join us?
Ashley Williams would be a stellar signing. Highest pass completion and most attempted passes of any centreback last year. But hes 31/32? Club will never pay 5-10m for a player that age no matter how much he’d strengthen us!
After that, I like the 2 west ham lads, Reid and Tomkins and Palaces scott dann but you’d have to pay through the nose to get any! Theres no way the club will spend 15m on one of those (that price quoted for the west ham lads in press, dann at 20m by pardew) when you could buy Abdennour, Rudiger or Howedes for the same amount! and for half the price you could buy Veltman, Van Dijk or Matip….
Apparantly theres a few rumours we’ve enquired about Mathias Ginter….

Does it not occur to you that of the money for Santon, Mbiwa, Debuchy and Cabaye some was in previous financial years?

Those monies have gone some way to putting the Club’s finances into such a state that there’s now money to spend this window.

  • 5 Tunami // Jul 28, 2015 at 3:33 PM

Well said Lesh – next we’ll be asking what happened to the money we got for Supermac and Gazza…… 😉

  • 6 Sazzer // Jul 28, 2015 at 3:34 PM

This was quality from Djuricic in the tournment Harry Kane failed to score. It’s about 1.30 into the clip.

Sorry Derek – didn’t mean that to sound like it was having a go – but this year at least there’s some money going out…

@mitrogol on prev post – Reckon Diego Rolan would make far more sense than Charlie Austin. Rolan prefers to play up top alongside a big striker but can play wide, is very quick and does actually have tremendous discipline and work rate. Has a tendency to shoot rather than create but out of all our striker links he makes the most sense to me as hes tactically very strong and can play effectively in numerous systems.
Think Austin is overhyped. Theres a reason no-ones snatched him up. At 26, and English you’d think there would be a bidding war. 15m isn’t a vast amount for a player that scored that many PL goals. Think scouts and managers realise he’s not got that much to his game

Djuricic nutmegs Ginter in the clip.

Yeah agree on SDJ playing just behind the striker/s. I think we are almost spoilt for talent in central midfield and thats why I expect SMc to go with a single striker. Will be interesting to see where Wijnaldum best fits in. I would love to see him in a defensive midfield pairing linking up with Colback/Anita/Tiote because from the little I’ve seen of him he does make some solid runs out of the back line. Sissoko is hard to fit into this squad but see him on RW but competing with Cabella for the same positions.

If the AMF from the previous article is suited to a wide atracking role, then i would accept that as a second forward signed (if we get him). That would suit the likelyhood of SMc using a single CF. If he is not suitted to it,then we should not sign him as yet another MF.

We still need a decent CB as well as mbemba. Quite a few decent names we have been linked to. Any one of them would do.

How on earth did one of my ‘t’s’ end up as an R???

  • 13 Derek // Jul 28, 2015 at 3:41 PM

yeah i know, was just highlighting the fact that Ashley hasn’t really had a massive net spend when you consider the profit made from previous outgoings

  • 14 Derek // Jul 28, 2015 at 3:44 PM

No problems mate, didnt feel you were having a go. Agree its good to see some money we made from previous windows is actually being used to finally replace what we’ve lost!

  • 15 sparky55 // Jul 28, 2015 at 3:47 PM

IMO the deals to sell Colo and Tiote and Sissoko and Cisse have already been done but this year we’re doing it the right way round and not selling anyone until we’ve got all the players we want signed up first.

Once a striker and CB have been recruited, I think we’ll be selling the above to save on wages and get some money back into the coffers and I think we’ll get circa 32 million for those four and get rid of 240 grand a week in wages.

The squad we have now with another striker and another CB means all the above mentioned players are redundant IMO

Charnley made his name signing players at NUFC?

Okay then, that means that for the most part he’s been paid for doing feck all other than being Mikeys private little play thing, the Corpurate Gimp, if you will.

    Have you forgot ….

Last summer we spent c£33M on Cabella, Jammnat, De Jong, Riviere, Perez, Darlow and Lascelles + signing on fees for Colback.

Because only Darlow and Lascelles were loaned out and De Jong, Riviere and Cabella only got three Prem goals between them its easy to forget the money spent last summer.

  • 20 Terry // Jul 28, 2015 at 5:14 PM

How can any idiot say austin is overhyped when he done it last season in a poor team against top sides.Dont rely on players you’ve seen for 2 minutes on the internet,we’ve had plenty of them who failed. This is the premier league.

Surely we have to have learned from last season re shortage of players . We must have a forward near to signing by letting Armstrong go on loan even though Rivierre is out for a couple of months
