Newcastle Trying To Close Deals For Four Players

10:28 pm, Wednesday, July 29th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 153 Comments

Newcastle United are reported to be still interested in signing Florian Thauvin, even though a £12M bid by the Magpies was turned down by Marseilles,  who are said to value their winger at £15M.

That’s not a huge gap to close, so maybe a slightly higher bid by Newcastle could still clinch the deal, although Tottenham are now said to also be interested.

florian thauvin 99

Florian Thauvin – Newcastle £3M short of Marseilles valuation

The Mirror are again saying Newcastle could use Remy Cabella as a makeweight in the deal for Thauvin – but we think that has no chance of happening at all.

Newcastle are also said to be trying to close the deal this week for Charlie Austin of QPR, who has said he wants to join Newcastle.

The only sticking point is (still)  the fee, with Newcastle willing to give Haris Vuckic in part exchange along with cool cash.

The three man FA committee will meet tomorrow to consider giving a Governing Body Endorsement (GBE) for Chancel Mbemba, which is required in order for the Anderlecht center-back  to obtain his visa.

Everything else has been agreed, the fee and the compensation to the player –  and Mbemba had taken his medical – so we assume he has passed it, otherwise that would have made news.

The deal could be announced on Friday.

And finally,  Newcastle are also favorites to sign 19 year-old Northampton striker Ivan Toney, who we have been linked with for a number of weeks now.

Newcastle have opened negotiations for the young striker and the fee will probably be around £500K with add-ons, depending on how well Toney does at Newcastle.

If we do sign Toney it wouldn’t be too surprising if Newcastle loan him out for the season to get first team games and continue learning his trade.

Northampton boss Chris Wilder has said this about the potential deal:

“Every party has to sort their own part of the deal out.”

So there are four players Newcastle are in the process of trying to sign that we know of – and three of them are for the first team squad.

We assume we can get Mbemba through the door by the end of the week, but it would also be nice to get Charlie and Florian in before the season starts on August 9th.

It doesn’t seem Newcastle are too far off on the fee in both cases.

Comments welcome.

Forget Thauvin and spend the £13m on another cb!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As well as Mbemba by the way.

  • 8 Belfast // Jul 29, 2015 at 10:36 PM

I stupidly thought for a moment there would be another defender included.

  • 9 Mister Tuff // Jul 29, 2015 at 10:38 PM

The whole concept of pre -season friendlies should be a progressive build up to your best team -getting match fit along the way -so there should be a reasonable understanding between all the players.
Unfortunately this hs not been the case – daft tour of the US – upon return -games too quick, players injured, players not signed up, deadwood still here, slow/tardy business in the transfer market.
So despite the best of intentions by Wally -he was on a hiding to nothing this close season. We’ll probably get another couple of players who will have to acclimatise.
Really the lack of strengthening the team over the last couple of years is the reason behind such a poor close season. I exclude the new players coming in obviously.

  • 10 Jack // Jul 29, 2015 at 10:42 PM

Oh no we’re doomed because pre season definitely foreshadows the exact events of the future.

    Deary me!

  • 11 Oldgit1 // Jul 29, 2015 at 10:42 PM

Sky sports has just reported that an African player who has played for Leeds for three seasons was due to join another championship side but has been refused a visa due to the new rules. Anyone else saw this story as I only got the back end of the story. Should we be worried re Bmamba

  • 12 Jack // Jul 29, 2015 at 10:43 PM

Why do we need a LB? When we have no back up RB. People confuse me so much!

  • 14 GeordieTwo // Jul 29, 2015 at 10:44 PM

I see we lost to York but how did we play? Sounds like Mit missed a couple of decent chances as did others. Time to get serious in the final game against MGB. Still a very weak squad a few injuries away from disaster sad to say.

  • 15 The Newcastle Armchair // Jul 29, 2015 at 10:45 PM

Before we go for a backup RB, let’s get a key playing LB.

  • 17 GeordieTwo // Jul 29, 2015 at 10:46 PM

Ashley apparently has learned nothing. Three incoming at this point with no Prem experience between them is laughable. West Ham have brought in 10 players and Bilic. How many decent players have Liverpool signed? What on earth are you dong Lee?

  • 18 toonfield // Jul 29, 2015 at 10:48 PM

We desperately need another cb as well as mbemba, everybody knows it, surely mclaren can see this, I don’t care about strengthening any other positions except cb

  • 19 GeordieTwo // Jul 29, 2015 at 10:49 PM

Difficult times ahead for Steve. Those first 7 matches are waiting……Mike will probably go into hiding again and then reappear with a silly grin on his face standing next to Charmless.

  • 20 switch365 // Jul 29, 2015 at 10:49 PM

When I saw the heading I was hoping those mentioned would have included 2 x cb’s, a lb and Austin … disappointed.

  • 21 Offkey // Jul 29, 2015 at 10:50 PM

G2 – Ashley learnt that by hiring a spin doctor and going on TV to say next to nothing…….he has got most NUFC fans onside with purchases they were always going to make……its the signings after these three that will show any intent as we might need investment other than previous player sales

  • 22 bobby mango // Jul 29, 2015 at 10:50 PM

Even if we sign all four we still need defenders.

Not convinced in the slightest on Thauvin. Austin is luxury of we keep Cisse.

We the f is the cb aerial monster we need?

  • 23 GeordieTwo // Jul 29, 2015 at 10:50 PM

Two more CB’s and ditch Saylor and Willo immediately toonfield. But it’s not going to happen. We haven’t gotten our money’s worth out of Willo yet. 😯

  • 27 GeordieTwo // Jul 29, 2015 at 10:53 PM

Thauvin is a luxury we don’t need. Two new CB’s are not luxuries, they’re vital. Even with Mbemba we need huge improvement of the back four. Why can’t the club seem to prioritize correctly?

  • 28 Jack // Jul 29, 2015 at 10:55 PM

No a back up RB is obviously more needed then a LB, what happens when Janmaat is injured? Bigi? Haha. I think we all know how bad that would be. LB before RB is just stupid!

  • 29 GeordieTwo // Jul 29, 2015 at 10:55 PM

Yes, Saylor can lead the singing in the injury room Jamsha mate. I think someone said he has averaged 14 games a season over the last 6 seasons. Or was it 18? Pathetic really. His last injury he jumped up about 6 inches and did his Achilles. Absolutely hopeless.

  • 31 jane // Jul 29, 2015 at 10:56 PM

I knew Fulham would have been bottom. however Derby only lost 1 of their first 13 matches winning 7 and drawing 5. I’d take that.

  • 32 barkel // Jul 29, 2015 at 10:57 PM

Mbemba coming in and a sub RB and i think we’ll be ok(ish) at the back. We could do with two wingers too. Although I said at the start of the summer I thought we would sign 3 max.

    JP .. on previous

Unfortunately that shirt is only make believe and not on sale. it’s kind of depressing!

  • 33 mickalfas // Jul 29, 2015 at 10:57 PM

For whatever reason the weakest part of the team is mentioned the least ,from the club anyway
Are they so used to Willo, Collo and sicknote being there ,they are going to wait till they’re out of contract
    Morons !!
We’ll be shipping another 60 goals this season
Spend ALL of the budget on the defence ffs!!!

  • 34 GeordieTwo // Jul 29, 2015 at 10:59 PM

Far too sensible mickalfas mate. This is Mike and Lee you’re talking about. They thought Joe Kinnear was brilliant!

  • 35 Charlietoon // Jul 29, 2015 at 11:00 PM

Can only hope the reason we are not starting with Colo or Willo is that we don’t want to risk them getting injured and they are up for sale.

  • 36 GeordieTwo // Jul 29, 2015 at 11:00 PM

And what a job Johnny C. did. Four wins out of 20. Absolutely brill. You can all see why we finished where we did and why we aren’t much better now.

  • 37 GeordieTwo // Jul 29, 2015 at 11:01 PM

Okish at the back barkel mate? We shipped 63 last season and all we’ve done is brought in Mbemba (probably).

  • 38 GeordieTwo // Jul 29, 2015 at 11:02 PM

I think this all calls for a Harrumph!!!!

  • 39 LewSpi v2.0 // Jul 29, 2015 at 11:02 PM

Why does it seem so hard to buy a player man?

    Watford have signed 9,
    Stoke 8,
    Aston villa 7,
    Bournemouth 7,
    Liverpool 7,
    Southampton 6,
    Man Utd 5,
    Swansea 5.

Our owner actually promised us a big summer of horse races and whips and all kind of shit, and we have 2 confirmed signings. Despite seeming like half decent signings, neither of them have came in to shape up the worst defence in the league.

  • 40 Belfast // Jul 29, 2015 at 11:02 PM

I reckon 95% of the blog would have signed two centre halfs first if they where in Lee Charnleys position.

He should have been out the door with Carver truth be told.

Yes we’ve signed two good players, but sorting out the terrible defence was the first port of call for anybody with an ounce of common sense.

  • 41 GeordieTwo // Jul 29, 2015 at 11:09 PM

We will pay for this stupidity once again. No decent defense as a Prem club? Complete lunacy. Makes me wonder about Charnley, McLaren and Carr. I’ve spoken in Carr’s defense but is it correct he sits on the football board now? Only a bunch of idiots ignores the weakest part of its team.

  • 42 mickalfas // Jul 29, 2015 at 11:09 PM

Looking at the amount of players other clubs have bought ,especially the ones we are apparently in competition with,
We’re going to be in trouble the whole season
We should have been top of the recruitment league ,after last season, not fcuking bottom !!

  • 43 jane // Jul 29, 2015 at 11:09 PM

how many years have our current CBs got left on their contracts out of interest?

  • 44 magpiesi // Jul 29, 2015 at 11:11 PM

Just heard caulker cost 1.5m to be loaned to Southampton and paying the full 60k a week wages he’s on.

Just have a sneaky suspicion we will get two cb on loan at the end of the window from the pl after smc witness with his own eyes as every coach thinks they can improve players.

Looking around the league I think 1 or 2 of these
    Chambers- arsenal
    Evans-Man U
    Tomkins-west ham
Maybe Dawson or Davies from hull

  • 45 Jack // Jul 29, 2015 at 11:11 PM

Almost everyone in our club is inept at there job, the only reason people have new found belief in McClaren is because he is a professional and comes across as knowing what he is doing, doesn’t mean he’s good at his job though! Remember when everyone disliked McClaren and thought he was terrible for the club, especially after rejecting us twice.

  • 46 jane // Jul 29, 2015 at 11:12 PM

number of signings alone could mask other factors eg number of outgoings, quality.

  • 47 LewSpi v2.0 // Jul 29, 2015 at 11:13 PM

I went on holiday on the 16th June. When the season finished I fully expected us to have 2 CBs signed by the time I set off, because it is so obvious that’s what we need,

The coaches weren’t even announced until I got back 2 weeks later, never mind any signings.

  • 48 magpiesi // Jul 29, 2015 at 11:13 PM

  • 49 barkel // Jul 29, 2015 at 11:13 PM

i think all current CB’s apart from Lascellas are in thier last year.

okish … in that we have decent full backs and colo +1 can do a job. not our best ever but trying to be positive. Colo can be solid if his head is in the game and a new CB will help.

  • 50 Offkey // Jul 29, 2015 at 11:15 PM

  • 51 LewSpi v2.0 // Jul 29, 2015 at 11:18 PM

Transfermarkt isn’t a bad second reference point

  • 52 GeordieTwo // Jul 29, 2015 at 11:18 PM

Not good enough by far at this point barkel mate. Colo is 33 now and injury prone. Saylor is a permanent sick note. Willo is not even Championship standard now. The three of them aren’t worth a plugged nickel because we have waited far too long to move any of them on. Mbemba had better be fast because he may be the only decent CB we have. Lascelles is a completely unknown factor in the Prem. Another season with a bottom 6 back 4. Only Janmaat is decent enough.

  • 53 Rozzy // Jul 29, 2015 at 11:19 PM

We need another quality CB to play with Mbemba.Would rather us get another defender over Austin as Cisse, Mitrovic, Perez & Riviere are good enough since we only play only one up top and Armstrong is out on loan. I think Cisse is away if Austin comes in to be our new number 9 and Mitrovic will take a couple of season IMO to start scoring regularly.

  • 54 GeordieTwo // Jul 29, 2015 at 11:20 PM

Almost everyone on here has said the same more or less. Some want 2 more CB’s a backup RB and another LB, others want slight variations on that. But in order to get into the top 8 we need that kind of change in the defense or forget it.

  • 55 bladeuser // Jul 29, 2015 at 11:20 PM

Jesus how hard is to sign a cb this club stinks
    Ashley f$#$ off out

  • 56 OneAlanShearer // Jul 29, 2015 at 11:21 PM

    Our weaknesses:
2nd choice keeper. Dare I say I say it even first choice is not perfect.
    Right back sub non existant.
    Centre back full stop.
But left back for me is very weak to…going forward ok but not defensively.
    Defensive midfield….weak
    Playmaker…We don’t have one.
Right wing…Sissoko the closest we have to one but inconsistent.
    Striker…We need a 20 goal a season striker.

That being said. This side if it stats fit could work.

    Janmaat Mbemba saylor/Colo Haidara
    Tiote Colback
    Sissoko Wijnaldum Aarons/perez

I personally feel that we need 4 more signings after Mbemba to have a competitive season without last season’s flaws.
Any of the solid centre backs we have been linked with.
Davies from spurs as 1st choice left back.
    Nathan Redmond.
Austin – how have we not signed him yet!!

  • 82 Ultra Mag-ness // Jul 30, 2015 at 12:57 AM

I was at the game tonight and this was very much a reserve friendly. None of the back 5 no gini socks anita or cisse a recovering arrons and de jong and a behind schedule mitrovic. The team kept the ball well and york had pretty much 3 shots all night which tells me that the coaching is effective. However despite satka and lascelles being tidy defensively they are poor in the air and struggled with a ball over the top. Bigi is no right back and fergie is a league 1 player at best ( looked sharp against york but would struggle against derby) abeid was trying to hard and was very wasteful, gouffran ran around a lot but with little end product perez ran around a lot but the pitch was against him – deserved his goal as he was hardest worker – aarons was woeful and is in danger of believing the hype basically forgot the basics – siem was wise and put in an educated performance – similar to bergkamp type role was impressed _ tackles like scholes.tho – mitro showed what he is about but got no real service, positionally and technically good but doesn’t look quick. Kemen looked really good and would like to see more and suddick didn’t really get long enough and didn’t shine

  • 83 expatmag // Jul 30, 2015 at 1:01 AM

    Thank you. Very good summary

  • 84 Spellcheck // Jul 30, 2015 at 1:14 AM

Nice insight ultra magness. Had no doubts about bigi & Ferguson, disappointed about abeid, one great game v Liverpool Last season & then nothing. I like McLaren’s he’s guarded but honest and just as hopeful as us Lot the fans, whether you’ve been writing ( on ) or reading this fantastic blog, however how many pseudonym’s you may have. Let’s hope and wish our great club can put us through it the way we dream of. Maybe not the entertainers or the once due to a great Arsenal team Invincibles ( One of my Bestie’s who sadly has passed on at such a youthful age supported the Gooners, God bless him ) but surely were due some decent viewing. Hopeful with new signings plus young Aaron’s, HWTL

  • 85 MagpieInLondon // Jul 30, 2015 at 1:30 AM

So how are Sissoko and De Jong going to fit in this team (particularly if we actually manage to sign Thauvin)? The three behind Mitrovic will most likely be Aarons/Cabella – Wijnaldum – Thauvin? SM will probably end up playing Sissoko on the right, which we all know was a terrible decision under Pardew. But then where does De Jong play? Then imagine if we sign Austin as well… We’ll have quality potentially wasting away on the bench (didn’t think I’d ever see that at Newcastle)

  • 86 expatmag // Jul 30, 2015 at 1:55 AM

It would certainly be a novelty to experience a decent brand of football thus season after all those years of Pardew’s defensive tactics.

However, with Ashley running the club, I always get the feeling of being held back. We always seem to be 2 or 3 players away from being a half decent team and we always seem to carry a lot of deadwood.

With McLaren and his staff, we seemed to be addressing the coaching deficiencies. We have spent big on 3 very good young stars with a lot of potential and Toonytunes believes we are in for more although I am yet to be convinced of this.

I dont expect anything more than midtable this season but I would like to see us play with a swagger.

Possibly being kept back to play next to Mbembe for a full game against BMG on saturday in preparation for the opener against Southampton.

  • 90 expatmag // Jul 30, 2015 at 2:34 AM

Judging by last nights line up, I would expect the starting line up against BMG to mirror the starting line up for Southampton:

    Janmaat, Mbembe/Taylor, Coloccini, Haidara

    Anita, Colback

    Sissoko, Wijnaldum, Perez

    De Jong

I think we r sticking on Thauvin may b Sissoko or Cisse is going.

On CB I think Mcclaren is waiting to see if Colo will play well.

On team performance am little worried I see little improvement in the players we move the ball so well but we still fail in the final third.

I remain to say Buy a CB and Austin and close the window.

Keep Cisse Tiote and Colo. Sell Willo, Obertan Marvuex, Goufrann and Lsceles ( loan)

As a fan, ofcourse i didn’t felt happy when i saw we lost. However,as some said, this game is all about bedding Mitrovic in to the team.Plus Epl is almost a week away,so SM doesn’t want to have anymore injuries.A bit disappointed that colo and Tiote didn’t play. They both are by far more experienced and necessary for the team in every epl games,as long as they are still here.
Moreover glad that Sissoko is still with us.
People don’t rate him much here but he is the other important player for the team. And should play on the right wing, with wijnaldum & Tiote in central MF.McLaren talks good, settled the players, the staff and happy for him so far, with some cracking signings. However,as ED said,he will be judged, like others,on results on the official games. As far as i’m concerned, things are going well and feeling positive about it!!

  • 100 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 30, 2015 at 6:45 AM

A bit disappointing we lost to York, but it wasn’t a first choice side – particularly at the back. Lascelles is the only one that started in defence last night that should be anywhere near the first team squad this season. The others should be on loan, or told to look for a new club.

Still, we should have had enough in midfield and attack there to come way with something. How many injuries do we already have? 8? How come we only had 4 players to name on the bench?

Anyway, of the 4 transfers listed above, only Mbemba seems close – we will know more today – and the other 3 I really am not interest in. Why are we after another French wideman who flatters to deceive, actually, any wideman that flatters to deceive? No guarantee Thauvin would settle, and he doesn’t seem bothered whether he moves or not.

Austin, unless Cisse leaves isn’t the type of centre forward required. Toney, may be one for the future, but we have bigger priorities than this. If we can do more than 1 deal at a time then fine, but this has been rumbling on for a month now, with no significant progress. Do the deal or get on with the priority deals.

10 days till the season starts, Mitro has had 70 minutes, Mbemba zero, Colo zero, Tiote zero. Hardly encouraging, and there has been zero build or progression through the friendlies. We have a tough run up until the international break in October. We could already be up against it if we don’t hit the ground running.

  • 101 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 30, 2015 at 6:51 AM

Anyway, first time I have been on in a few days, good to see both Woodman and Arma going out on loan. Now for Sterry, Satka, Kemen, Roberts, Bigi to all get loan time.

You’re not allowed to give a frank appraisal unless it mentions that we’ve turned a corner and that we have to have patience, Rome wasn’t built in a day or eight years.
I see that the alternative shirt sell out has made headlines in the Nationals and ergo on to the Newspaper round up on the BBC breakfast news, suggests to me that the natives aren’t entirely satisfied or convinced with Ashleys sudden change of direction ?

  • 104 Jail for Ashley // Jul 30, 2015 at 7:05 AM

The best fit RB cover we have is eighteen years old and eight and a half stone. Kate Moss is slightly less at eight and a quarter.

  • 105 ilovetoon8788 // Jul 30, 2015 at 7:09 AM

We need another defender. Or we’ll struggle. Scrap all the plans for Austin and go all out for a decent centre back. Throw in Williamson as a free gift too.

  • 106 Jail for Ashley // Jul 30, 2015 at 7:09 AM

Are we really after Austin, if not, end the circus now, if we are pay the extra 1.75M and get him integrated in to the squad, having a match fit player on the same page as the rest of the team might mean an extra couple of goals and a possible place or two higher paying for said 1.75M and keeping fans happy.
My biggest worry is that the reason we have not signed defenders is that there are none available that they think might have resale value and that’s why the emphasis (and money) has been spent on players that might have.

  • 107 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jul 30, 2015 at 7:09 AM

Lilongwe…a PL team signs on average 8 players in the summer transfer window; we have signed two and as you said the season starts in two weeks.

Someone posted the dealings of other PL clubs and it seems they have no trouble signing players!

I posted this the other day after Ed’s ramblings of giving Charmless credit for his hard work! I suppose that depends on your looking glad.

  • 111 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 30, 2015 at 7:12 AM

On the new shirt, I tried to order one yesterday, but they didn’t have my size! Did they only have limited availability initially? Sent them an email asking when they would have stand haven’t got a response…

On the summer, I think we all knew it couldn’t happen in just one window. However that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t be doing more in the first one! This is probably the most important of the 3 windows McClaren talked about. If they don’t get the players in, we have a bad start and are playing catch up, then it isn’t going to help when trying to replace our entire back line next summer, as well as Cisse, Tiote, and the back up that are out of contract next year.

So far it feels like we are severely undercooking it, as we did last summer. Lacking signings in key areas. Injury free, we are okay, but we already have 8 players missing games (I think), hardly encouraging.

First team 8th to 10th. The back up is patchy, and that is being positive on what we have.

It’s so obvious as to what is needed.I am living in hope that we’re waiting for one of the CBs that we have been linked with recovering from injury….Matip /Rudiger or someone like that. SM keeps saying we need to be patient so I’m hoping something is agreed behind the scenes that when the recovery is complete we can move 1 in, 1 out.THEN we can fill out other positions.Build on sand, expect your house to collapse!!

  • 117 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 30, 2015 at 7:18 AM

Yeah, other clubs have signed players. If you take out the top 6 clubs signings, there aren’t that many that I would have wanted. Claisie maybe, but not really what we need. Tyrone Mings I would have taken, but he is potential for the further more than an immediate fix. Maybe Lens, who has gone to Sunderland would have been a good wide forward for us. Ogbonna of West Ham.

So, at the most 4, but more likely 2 or 3 are players I think would have strengthened us sufficiently to have wanted. Players are still there that would be better for us, but it is just whether the club actually go and get them.

Lewis Suddick is a winger/attacking midfielder. Not a full back. The closest we have to a right back cover is Mbabu and Sterry although Sterry is more of a centre back.

…and non of them have had a real pre-season.

What has Charmless been doing? We knew this season was very important for us because we undersigned for so many. Not many PL were in dire need as us…regardless of whether you would take the players they have signed or not (was really not my point)

  • 135 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 30, 2015 at 7:45 AM

Yeah, we started slow in the transfer window and never really got going. It has been left late now, and any foreign signings coming in from now will not be ready for Prem action mentally or physically straight away.

I”m not worrying about other teams particularly, a lot of the teams that have made many signings had to do it far more than us. Teams like Watford and Bournempouth had to. Sunderland and Villa were in desperate need. West Ham have had a good summer, Palace have done okay, West Brom, Everton, Leicester haven’t done much to suggest vast improvement.

It is about what we do. We need 2 more in, the longer we wait the more important then being able to hit the ground running becomes. A leader at the back and a wide forward that can slot into the first team straight away. Then one or 2 youngsters as back up – a right back and A.N Other. That is a good window for us, not looking likely at the moment though.

  • 136 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 30, 2015 at 7:51 AM

I found it amusing the other day when I read a Ronny article by Bob Moncur. He is a member of the footballing board, yet he sounded as clueless on what is happening re transfers as the rest of us.

The football board is a farce. Charnley is the closest to being suitable for a role on it, and is the only one that holds a position that should merit a spot on the board.

To be fair to SMc I bet he is major peed off this pre season, he’s played in the states on crap pitches and he comes back here and has to play on a drenched pitch last night. Remember his star signing last season George Thorne out for the whole season due to injury in pre season, I reckon that’s the reason for these poor line ups.

  • 144 lochinvar // Jul 30, 2015 at 8:22 AM

  • 145 Slank // Jul 30, 2015 at 8:23 AM

    Lil @ 137

In the previous summer transfer window we brought in nine players, one of whom was a loanee. If as Jasper says that the average was eight then we were ahead of the flow.

However, quantity is not the benchmark of how to assess a transfer window. It is arguable that a team that brings in 10 players of whom 8 are poor is worse off than a team that only brings in 3 but who are all quality.

  • 146 Jail for Ashley // Jul 30, 2015 at 8:24 AM

No doubt about it if you buy players you are strengthening the squad but if you had a bucket with six holes in it and you plugged three of them, technically you have strengthened the bucket but you have no way fixed it.

The quality of the signings is not in question imo
It’s the number of them,2 new players after releasing 5? ,Cant be enough in anyone’s mind ,we need defenders desperately
As for other clubs not being important who they sign, surely we’re falling further behind them

  • 150 andrewsneill // Jul 30, 2015 at 8:36 AM

While i would be thrilled to get another striker in, especially one with Premier League experience as Austin does, i would prioritise a winger (possibly Thauvin?) and a centre back on top of Mbemba. Cover for right back would also be nice since we seem to have no specialised cover there if Janmaat gets injured.

At which point we could look to offload some of the deadwood like Williamson, Obertan and Riviere

  • 151 sparky55 // Jul 30, 2015 at 8:39 AM

Business as usual in the good ship NUFC with Charmless at the helm.

Ashley is losing sleep at night having already spent more than he’s ever spent in a single window and all we’re gonna get now is excuses about how we tried to get 4 more players over the line but couldn’t quite make it…and then in the last week of the window we’ll get some offers Ashley couldn’t quite refuse and we’ll lose three of our old purples without time to replace them.

Unfortunately all a bit too predictable

  • 152 Malackay // Jul 30, 2015 at 8:40 AM

If fans such as our own, who notoriously crave attacking football and flair signings, are telling the club to place more emphasis on defensive signings than attacking ones……. they should probably listen. Need Mbemba and at least one more.
