Chancel Mbemba Confirmed As Being 20 – Facts And Figures

6:35 pm, Thursday, July 30th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 172 Comments

Newcastle have just released some facts about their new signing Chancel Mbemba,  and the first fact about him is that he was born in Kinshasa, the capital city of the Democratic Republic of Congo, on 8th August, 1994.

So that makes him 20 years old and due to turn 21 in 10 days time – and that’s his official age unless we hear something different from FIFA who are making an inquiry into his age.

As we all know, there has been some controversy about his age, after as many as four birth dates  given in the past.

Chancel Mbemba – turns 21 next month

Here is some other facts about our new player:

  • He is from a family of nine and his mother, Antoinette, represented DR Congo at basketball
  • Chancel played as a youth for ES La Grace, Mputu and MK Etancheite in DR Congo before signing on at Anderlecht in 2011
  • Mbemba made his Anderlecht debut 28th July 2013 in their opening match of the 2013–2014 Belgian Pro League season, a 2–3 defeat to Lokeren
  • He made his debut for DR Congo three years ago and he so far has 17 caps for his country
  • The center-back has played 76 times in total for Anderlecht with 9 goals and 2 assists
  • Chancel stands just a little less than 6ft tall but is very good header of the ball
  • He is a qualified electrician and plans to become a professional electrician after his footballing career ends (in 2030 while still at Newcastle and said to be 35)

There’s not much more we can find out about the lad, but he will probably be introduced to the crowd at the game on saturday against Borussia Monchengladbach.

He is one of four players we reported last night were close to signing for Newcastle.

One of those was 19 year-old Ivan Toney of Northampton Town, who is reported having a medical at Newcastle today.

The other two are Charlie Austin of QPR and Florian Thauvin of Marseilles,  and we assume Lee Charnley and company are working hard to get those two excellent players over the line.

If we can indeed get those two players through the door,  they will cost around £28M between them, which would take our spending to around £63M so far this summer.

A good start.

🙂

But we all know we need another top center-back brought in.

Comments welcome.

Palace after Connor Wickham from Sunderland:

BREAKING: We understand Crystal Palace have agreed a fee with Sunderland for striker Connor Wickham. More over on @SkySportsNewsHQ

Keith Downie ?@SkySports_Keith 11 minutes ago
Wickham signed a long term contract extension last season on high wages so the fee agreed with Palace will be substantial.

    ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Wonder how much Palace have bid, not exactly done anything since he came into the Prem

Ed, what is this FIFA investigation you refer to – the one from February 2013. Think its all solved as far as FIFA are concerned:

  • 9 Liverpool Mag // Jul 30, 2015 at 6:38 PM

If Wickham is going to palace I’d be surprised if Sunderland didn’t move for Austin. Which is an upgrade on Wickham anyway in my opinion

    From previous post…
I am taking a big chance firebug mate. But I see the fine work being done by Lee and I just know we can do it. We can snatch 13th place from other undeserving clubs like Stoke and Leicester….The dream lives on….Beautiful.
And I can confirm Chancel is 30 but uses Spectro Skin Advice…..

‘…we just don’t think you should take it out of us just because your mum told you to clean your room.’

If that isn’t a punt at my age then I don’t know what is.

  • 13 Tsunki // Jul 30, 2015 at 6:39 PM

He looks better than he actually is imo. Had a bit of a sticky start at the scumhole. He did have a purple patch once, four or five goals in as many games something like that but he was brought into the prem before he was ready at any rate. Still young though so Pardew has plenty of time to squeeze out all his potential.

Relieved it’s finally official and that there will be no headlines about, “Toon drop themselves in it by putting all their hopes on signing someone who fails to qualify!”

I imagine some of the southern hacks had the headlines already emblazoned across the tops of their dtp docs.

To be perfectly honest, I couldn’t give a flying mackem what his age is, if he’s as good as he’s meant to be, that’s all that really matters.
Can’t wait to find out just how good he is!

Another cb please Mr Charnley, and keep up the good work.

We have no playmaker, no experienced winger, no experienced striker other than cisse, we desperately need a further centre back. We should be far from done but they will continue to string out signings so at best we will get 3 players not including toney. I’m hoping that is austin next as teams stay up on goals, a quality centre back to partner Mbemba and a creative midfielder. Aarons and Perez are great but it’s a big burden on their shoulders. Also keep our best players. I bet they sell sissoko and cisse.

I don’t know why everyone is pairing Mbemba with Colo for the Southampton game?! Do you guys not remember Colo with Mbiwa and how awful we were?! Everton game, Liverpool game etc. In fact Mbiwa’s best performances were with Williamson. (Not that I am saying he should play)

Basically Mbemba is (like Colo) a short but quick and technically gifted CB – he NEEDS to be paired with a big strong solid CB. Of the CBs we have – that should mean that Membea is partnered with either Taylor or Lascelles for the Southampton game – unless we got Rudiger or alike in too.

The squad need 4 CBs – 2 category 1 CBs (not massive but quick, technically gifted and reads the game well) and 2 category 2 CBS (big strong solid and good at heading)

1 from each category need to be our starting pair. Of the defenders we have my opinion is:

Mbemba – Starting category 1 CB
Colo – Bench/Backup category 1 CB (until January when we replace)
    Taylor – Bench/Backup category 2 CB
    Lascelles – Bench/Backup category 2 CB
Williamson – Needs to be sold

So we basically need to buy a Starting category 2 CB THIS WINDOW. If we don’t then Mbemba & Taylor or Lascelles need to start.

I genuinely don’t mind waiting until January for the quality RW we need – as long as the CB and DMF is bought this window

  • 71 OneAlanShearer // Jul 30, 2015 at 7:38 PM

    Mcclaren prefers

    4-3-3/4-1-4-1 formations

So I’d say that means current best options are

    Krul
    Janmaat Mbemba Colo Haidara
    colback
    Sissoko Wijnaldum sdj aarons
    Mitrovic

    Or

    Krul
    Janmaat Mbemba Colo Haidara
    Sissoko tiote Colback
    Wijnaldum mitrovic aarons

I personally think this shows the lack of options for quality passing from deep and the lack of a right winger. Wijnaldum doesn’t want to play deep in a 4231. He wants the no.10 role. So I think this what formation we need to play and the empty slots that need fulling to allow the defence to push up.

Krul arguably also needs a better keeper to challenge him as I don’t think darkie or elliot are it.

    ————–Krul—————-
    ———————————–
    ——–Mbemba —–new cb———–
    Janmaat —–new dm/colback——Haidara
    New rw/sissoko–Wijnaldum–sdj——aarons
    ———-mitrovic /cisse/austin————

So if they are think like me the want 3 more minimum being a nippy centre back who can play the ball out, a right winger and Austin.

  • 89 OneAlanShearer // Jul 30, 2015 at 7:58 PM

The problem is not the number of bodies we have in each position it’s the complete lack of sufficient quality in each.
An injury to Mbemba and we have last year’s defence.
An injury to Wijnaldum and we have last year’s midfield.
An injury to mitrovic and we have last year’s strikers.
Which equals last year’s struggle for me.
We need to get minimum 3 more in key positions then think about shipping out the dross or too old.

Are you happy with the transfer window so far?

  • 101 jimmysmith // Jul 30, 2015 at 8:10 PM

Welcome aboard. As long as we don’t sell anyone, then this squad can finish top eight, and pursue the cups. Pardew had us fifth, and looking every inch good for it, with an inferior squad, and after a terrible start, till it went all to hell in a hand basket of course.

McClaren the better coach? probably, his support look an upgrade certainly. Could use some cover at right back, and by all means go out and buy Charlie Austin too, if you are sincere about “making our own luck”, Mike. But that already has the look of a pretty decent squad.

  • 104 OneAlanShearer // Jul 30, 2015 at 8:11 PM

Cheers yep Ever Banega. Having watched him I think he would be ideal for us. The creativity and battling style we need.
I would go for one of the many linked centre backs.
    Banega.
    Austin.
Then in the next window sort out wing back options and goal keeping options.

  • 105 TorqToon // Jul 30, 2015 at 8:12 PM

I’m very well thank you, Jack. Yeah I think we have actually made a very impressive start to the transfer window.

Wijnaldum was classed above memphis Depay and many others as the best player in the Dutch league. Mitrovic has the capacity to be a class act for us and arguably, mbemba could prove to be the most valuable addition out of them all.

I’m just hoping we aren’t done yet.

  • 106 Jib // Jul 30, 2015 at 8:12 PM

Sounds like good buys, although I think we realistically only need the centre back and can do without the other two for now. Mainly because I don’t want to hamper Mitrovic’s development by putting Austin ahead of him

It’s a very positive sign indeed, with signings we thought we could never make, but more importantly, it looking like Mike has finally turned a corner. Obviously there is loads more work to be done, with the last 8 years we are way behind in terms of quality, but if this 3 transfer window plan is exciting as they say it is then we could be looking to a great future. Although I really hope 1 more CB is signed because we really do lack quality there.

Good evening jib, how are you.

  • 125 OneAlanShearer // Jul 30, 2015 at 8:27 PM

Will die – exactly. Paper thin in terms of quality.

When you think of all those not good enough the list is endless. If I’m being cut throat ruthless then I’d ship out and replace where necessary :
    Elliot
    Haidara (not great defensively)
    Tiote (passing and tackling issues)
    Abeid
    Bigi
    Ferguson
    Gouffran
    Obertan
    Riviere
    Marveaux
    Williamson
    Colo (too old)
    Saylor (injury prone)

I’d keep Dummett and colback just for fighting spirit but both have flaws.

Cisse I’d keep but his knee worries me.

The jury is very much out on darlow and lascalles for me as watching them at for rest I was not impressed.

Now tale a look at what’s left. The numbers don’t look so great then. The way I’d gauge the quality is how many would get into another premier league teams first xi. The answer is not a huge amount

    Krul
    Janmaat
    Mbemba
    Sissoko
    Aarons
    Perez
    Cisse
    Colback
    Dummett
    Mitrovic
    Wijnaldum

Arguably Colo and Saylor but weak options now.

I’m not even sure sdj’s injuries haven’t taken their toll either. He is another player I’m concerned about.

Injuries to that last list and we are hamstrung again. That’s why we desperately need players not because we are spoilt or greedy we actually seriously have a flawed squad.

  • 126 Liverpool Mag // Jul 30, 2015 at 8:28 PM

It’s been said that Austin has rejected offers as well as the club. Perhaps Austin refused Leicester, so maybe Southampton think they have a good chance

  • 130 OneAlanShearer // Jul 30, 2015 at 8:35 PM

Liverpool Mag. I see your point. It all depends how quickly we want to close the gaps. I just fear the injuries. Any of those new players injures leaves us with the same flawed squad from last season and for me that squad goes down this season.

The three buys may be young, but not inexperienced. All internationals, all with Champions league experience, all with significant numbers of domestic games under their belts.
Collocini is our oldest player, but 33 is not past it, and certainly not when you read the game as well as he does, and have his touch. He needs something to play for. Cisse, Tiote, even Willo, should still be in their prime, the rest are young but with a year or more experience of the league, you’d expect to see more from Aarons, Cabella, Perez, Rivierre and of course De Jong is now fit. It seems a good balanced squad in almost every respect, and still a squad in transition. I like the look of it, and the direction the club appears to be taking at this stage. We look well placed to develop a good side over the next year or two.
