McClaren Strengthens Newcastle’s Spine – But More Needed

9:38 pm, Thursday, July 30th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 105 Comments

It’s often said that the spine of the team – the players operating through the middle of the park, is the heart of the team and a good measure of how good a team is.

It’s interesting that Steve McClaren’s first three signings for Newcastle are a central midfielder – Georginio Wijnaldum, followed by a center-forward – Aleksandar Mitrovic, followed by a center-back finally signed today – Chancel Mbemba.

mbemba signs for newcatsle

Chancel Mbemba – signed today from Anderlecht

The one other part of the spine is the goalkeeper.

Our goalkeeper Tim Krul had a poor second half of last season, but so did most of our players, and Tim seems keen on staying on Tyneside after 10 years – now that he finally persuaded Gini to signb after years of trying.

It seems Tim is very keen to get back to his best form and he’s looked good in pre-season.

Here’s the ins and outs in the transfer market Newcastle have made so far this summer.

Incoming Transfers.

Outgoing Transfers.

Davide Santon2.5MInter-Milan
Sammy AmeobiSeason LoanCardiff
Adam Armstrong6 Month LoanCoventry
Freddie Woodman6 Month LoanCrawley

Those are good moves by the club to send Adam Armstrong and Freddie Woodman out for six month loan so they can get first team games, and good it’s been done before August rolls around.

And with Sammy Ameobi being given a two year deal in the summer, he has a chance if he really shines for Cardiff City next season to still have a career back at Newcastle.

But the likelihood is that he’s played his last game in Newcastle’s colors.

Those three players we have brought in are all very good signings – so who else do we need?

Our weakness last season was a difficulty in scoring goals and we also conceded too many goals – so another top center-back and another striker are needed.

We are going after Charlie Austin of  QPR and he would be a good buy, and there are several top center-backs we have been linked with this summer and we should be able to sign one of them.

We’ve been linked with Joel Matip of Schalke, Joel Veltman of Ajax, Aymen Abdennour of Monaco, Douglas of Dynamo Moscow and Valencia’s Nicolas Otamendi.

Charlie and a top center-back may cost at least £25M together.

And then  another midfielder like Florian Thauvin of Marseilles could be signed, and if the news is to be believed we have just had a £12M offer for him turned down.

If we can get three new players through the door – it will cost us about £37M and maybe more – so there’s a likelihood that we could spend over £70M this summer – and that would be a huge amount for this Newcastle to spend.

Why do I not believe we will spend £70M this summer?

If we can three more good players through the door, then this will have been a good summer transfer window for Newcastle United.

And if all that happens then Mike Ashley will have kept his word and given big money to the Newcastle Board to spend, as he had promised on May 24th.

It would then be hard to argue that Mike hasn’t kept his word – you could try – it’s just the facts would be against you.

But all those good signings will guarantee nothing, and Steve McClaren and the players – urged on by the fans – will have to start getting some good results in both the Premier League and both cups.

If that happens then we must have decent chance of having a good season coming up.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

What do you think, maybe a move for Steve Harper as gk coach might be an option?

He said today on twitter, he has just completed his A badge. When asked if he fancied the Newcastle GK coach job he replied:

I’m not finished GK; on the other opportunity, If Carlsberg did football jobs………….

    Or something like that.

Where has the rumblings of special signing emanated from? Did it come from Lee Ryder?

  • 11 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 30, 2015 at 10:07 PM

We still need 8 new players. I want to see us sign the following:

    Van Dijk – £8m
    Sebastian Corchia – £3m
    Terence Kongolo/Stefano Denswil – £3.5m
    Thauvin – £13m
    Shaquiri – £13m
    Leroy Fer – £7m
    Clement Grenier – £9m
    Aubameyang – £19m

That’s £75.5m that we need to spend. We can then afford to get rid of the following:

    Williamson – £1.5m
    Saylor – £2.5m
    Dummett – £1.5m
    Shane Ferguson – £400k
    Bigirimana – £1m
    Obertan – £3m
    Gouffran – £3m
    Riviere – £4m
    Colback – £8m
    Tiote – £9m

    Total sales = £33.9m

    Net spend = £41.6m

Think it came from Ryder and the media hyping up McClaren saying that some of the names on the clubs lists haven’t been linked in the media yet; thus making some put 2 and 2 together

  • 18 voodoo85 // Jul 30, 2015 at 10:15 PM

    Kets @9

Think some of your outgoing fee’s are ambitous – cant see anyone bidding £3m for Obertan or Gouffran, likewise your fees for Colback / Tiote etc

  • 19 firebug666 // Jul 30, 2015 at 10:17 PM

I read something, might have been in the Chronicle, that we were after another three players, and that one of them was for an eight figure sum.

This youngster could be one, but as for the supposed other two, who knows?

I still think the press (like the rest of us) are just guessing.

  • 20 voodoo85 // Jul 30, 2015 at 10:21 PM

    Firebug @19

I read that too from this article:

“The club are pressing on with plans to improve the squad, with Chancel Mbemba the third of the club’s new summer signings – and at least one more planned before the season’s kick-off in August. Newcastle want to bring in another two or three players, with one of those a potential eight-figure signing.”

Ah Kets, how I’ve missed this – i take it from this list you’re not a fan of Gini the Geordie?! Oh and Arsenal have already been quote £30m+ for PEA.

  • 25 OneAlanShearer // Jul 30, 2015 at 10:30 PM

    Ketsbia – no Wijnaldum?

Not a chance in hell we will sign that many players. It takes us two or 3 weeks to sign each player.

  • 26 lesh // Jul 30, 2015 at 10:33 PM

Nowt wrong with your maths – a little ambitious though, don’t you think – a nett spend of £41m on top of the £35m or so that’s been spent so far this window!

Could it be you’ll use Mitrovic, Wljdnum and Mbemba in another wishful context?

  • 27 The Newcastle Armchair // Jul 30, 2015 at 10:35 PM

  • 42 jane // Jul 30, 2015 at 11:13 PM

which is better to have a manager that doesn’t play attractive football but gets more points than is expected eg Sam Allardyce, or a manager that plays attractive football but gets worse results than expected?

I predict that McClaren won’t do as well as Pardew with the players at his disposal but as he will have better players he will get about the same amount of points.

I think McClaren will do ok because of the investment but not great. I think he may get found out and won’t be able to change things much like good manages do. but even if it doesn’t work out it’ll be a step in the right direction.

my prediction is an exciting but under achieving season finishing between 11th and 14th but the following season will be better with a new top manager.

  • 43 firebug666 // Jul 30, 2015 at 11:20 PM

McClaren will be here for three years plus, and I think he will do very well. He has not so far played our strongest team in a match, defence has been our main problem for a while now and that’s what he needs to sort out.

I think we will sign a couple more players, and hoping that one will be a CB.

McClaren and his staff will get the team into better shape, and playing better football.

If we start poor it will make his job that much harder, but I think he can handle it, a good start will boost confidence and give us a platform to build on.

Overall I think we may have a very good season.

  • 44 Graeme // Jul 30, 2015 at 11:24 PM

We STILL need a proper CB brought in – the Goals Against column for last three season provides all the evidence required. Then a genuine LB and that is the minimum we require to start the season!!

  • 45 firebug666 // Jul 30, 2015 at 11:27 PM

I agree on the CB, but I would like to see if McClaren can develop Haidara and Dummett at LB, neither are brilliant at the moment, but given a little time with the new coaches could bring them on.

  • 46 Tsunki // Jul 30, 2015 at 11:31 PM

Graeme according to pawl we have a fantastic back line with a strong defensive bench so stop worrying. It will merely drizzle goals rather than flood in like last year. Look at the Mighty Minster men of York, the Norse warriors of Jorvik, if you will, who only managed to Squeeze two goals out of us. BMG should be a pub team pushover after that, with Iron Mike marshaling the rear entrance.

Jane, if we’ve learned anything, it’s that Mike loves to stick by what he knows. Pardew may well have still been here now if palace hadn’t come for him. I can’t think of any disasters Steve could produce, short of sticking a javelin with a mackem flag on it between nobby Solano ‘s butt cheeks during half time heroes, that would get him sacked after the insanely catastrophic reign of King Percy of Pardew.

  • 52 jane // Jul 30, 2015 at 11:42 PM

I think McClaren may be forced to go if there is a lot of investment and the team under performs. i think Pardew was safe because he did the job that was expected of him but expectations may get higher now.

  • 53 Graeme // Jul 30, 2015 at 11:43 PM

Tsunki – according to my eyes – Pawl is 100% wrong – We have added a 20 year-old, untried CB!!

I have no doubt that Chancer is going to be a superb CB for us, so that only leaves another 2 culprits from last season to throw out and replacements brought in. Janmaat is absolutely fine at RB.

  • 54 Tsunki // Jul 30, 2015 at 11:44 PM

    Belfast I thought that’s what I was saying? Wasn’t I?

  • 55 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 30, 2015 at 11:45 PM

Can’t believe I missed off Wijnaldum. I’d be happy with 1 left back, 1 centre back, 1 winger and 1 striker.

So we need 4 more players to have a successful window. The four I’d choose would be:

    Terence Kongolo
    Van Dijk

I reckon we could challenge for 3rd place with that squad. Chelsea and Arsenal have the best squads at the moment. Man Utd could surprisingly get relegated this season after letting Di Maria and Falcao go plus signing average players.

  • 56 Belfast // Jul 30, 2015 at 11:45 PM

I would actually like to know what happened him? he seemed quite reasonable until recently.

Rumours where rife that Pushy Pardew tea bagged him. I didn’t see anything.

  • 57 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 30, 2015 at 11:46 PM

  • 58 Tsunki // Jul 30, 2015 at 11:47 PM

Jane – I don’t know why you reason that, given that Pardew still produced world class debacles on a regular basis regardless of the talent at his disposal and had to voluntarily go for us to be rid of him.

Berahino has the pace, but is he a good footballer?

  • 80 switch365 // Jul 31, 2015 at 1:06 AM

He’s pretty decent and improved a lot last season, sadly the same kind of improvement this season would put his value way beyond our reach.

I wouldn’t mind McC bringing young Will Hughes from Derby, seen quite a bit of him playing for England youth teams and he’s always looked more than capable of making the step up within the next 2-3 years.

  • 81 swemag // Jul 31, 2015 at 1:59 AM

According to source which claims to be getting info from Carr our interest in Austin is dead but we are trying to sign a mystery striker that apparently is better than Austin.

Looking forward to seeing who that is if it ever materializes.

  • 82 Bobbybee // Jul 31, 2015 at 2:06 AM

Not sure why I keep reading that Mbemba is unproven. Granted he hasn’t played in the PL yet, but he’s a full international and, more to the point, he’s got CL experience, where he has excelled by all accounts. Apart from our new signings, there’s hardly a dearth of Newcastle squad members who can match that. Once he’s used to the pace, he’ll be fine and judging by how quickly he covers the ground, that shouldn’t take him long. I’ve also read that he doesnn’t need to be that quick to play CB, but as Macca likes to play ten yards further forward than we have in the past, that speed is likely to be vital.

  • 83 Bobbybee // Jul 31, 2015 at 2:22 AM

TNA. Alternatively we could ask him to wire up a chair and invite them to take a seat! 🙂

  • 84 Bobbybee // Jul 31, 2015 at 2:25 AM

Swemag, reckon we’ve already got one better than Austin anyway in Mitrovic. How reliable has your source been in the past, on a 1-10 rating?

  • 85 Bobbybee // Jul 31, 2015 at 2:32 AM

Oh well, left it a bit late I suppose. This would be a good time to be one of those multiple posters, so at least I’d have somebody to talk to 🙂

  • 86 swemag // Jul 31, 2015 at 2:34 AM

Boobybee, well, he announced the new football board the night before it happened. He got one guy wrong, but we had never heard of a football board before that.
Though I think it was common knowledge or expected, that same night he said Carver would be fired the next day, which he was.
He does not make outlandish claims, he seems very sincere to me.
This whole thing with the surprise signing he has been saying for weeks.
Still, obviously it is very possible nothing will come of it.

  • 87 Bobbybee // Jul 31, 2015 at 2:38 AM

Swemag! There is still life out there! 🙂 I hope he’s right, another top striker would be brilliant. Now I’m wondering who it could be! Can’t be Whickham, he’s gone with Pardew lmao! Perish the thought!

    Robertson LB
    Shaqiri RW

We need supply and defence more than anything
Tbh Austin and mitrovic wouldn’t work as one needs pace to create space for the other, but on the other hand it would be a canny good strikeforce

    more cb and striker needed?
Last season, we didn’t exactly create a lot of chances for our strikers and we didn’t really offer enough protection for our defense with so many being injured and our style made us can’t keep possession of the ball, we lose the ball too easily which put pressures to our defense.
If we want our team to score more and concede less then they will have to change the way they play from hoofball to possession playing from the goalkeeper. when the ball reached the goalkeeper which often do, they have to stop hoofing it unless necessary.
We need to supply more crosses, last season only Janmaat often did that and he is a right back, our wingers made a lot less crosses compare to our fb. either make our wingers able to supply good crosses or buy new wingers who can do it.
last but not least is set fu#king pieces, make it work ffs.

More rumours of Liverpool signing Sissoko

  • 92 expatmag // Jul 31, 2015 at 5:20 AM

More rumours mate. When they bid 25 million quid, we will let him go. Probably the last day of the window with no time to get a replacement in.

Great news on Mbemba.Just about time. That means either williamson or Staylor will definitely leave. If palace sign Wickham and villa Adebayor then we are clear to land Austin, which i expect ‘ll happen next week.
But if someone ask me who i prefer to sign next,
I will say Thauvin, evenif talk of him turned us down twice. If sissoko leaves, which will be disappointing,I’m sure carr & company will definitely go after Thauvin!!

Just seen on sky sports news that Villa have have agreed a 6m deal for Rudy Gestede – decent purchase so where does that leave Mr Austin

  • 95 hibbit // Jul 31, 2015 at 6:04 AM

people on here last night were saying we had given up on austin…….. if we are interested in him it must put nufc in a much stronger position as other clubs that have been linked with are buying other plays to do his job………qpr are running out of options

  • 96 Reyantoon // Jul 31, 2015 at 6:05 AM

Welcome back! We don’t know each other but people speak of u highly here re nufc. They said u have deep inside out info of nu,so don’t disappear,u regarded as good contributer.

  • 97 ToonFromLeeds // Jul 31, 2015 at 6:06 AM

Bookies now have us at 2/7 to sign Austin and the next best is Villa at 10/1 I think Austin is coming

  • 98 expatmag // Jul 31, 2015 at 6:20 AM

I would think West Ham might be a decent favourite to sign Austin especially as Carroll is out till at least October and Vslencia suffered a bad injury last night in the EL.

The Sissoko to Liverpool rumours are speculative. If Sissoko thinks the grass is greener elsewhere then fine but like others ( Ba, Santon , Cabaye etc ) he might be in for a shock. The tactic of wanting “Champions League ” is wearing thin as an argument – there are plenty of lesser known clubs in far flung parts who can provide that but funny that these players rarely go there as they are always one hit wonders. Liverpool are trading off their historical reputation and without Sterling, Suarez and Gerrard may find themselves struggling in mid table. Sissoko should take a close look at what’s happening around him now at NUFC and be part of and contribute to more ambitious plans at NUFC. The alternative is Rodgers and a half built decrepit stadium and no Champions League on Merseyside, no thanks.

All this Sissoko interest yet so many at NUFC say no good get rid. One of the two sides must be wrong. Me, I think we have a gem on our hands: needs coaching to get us into CL.
