10 Memorable Sir Bobby Robson Quotes – Plus 8-0 Win Video

6:54 pm, Friday, July 31st, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 66 Comments

It’s six years since the great Sir Bobby Robson passed away from cancer, and we have put out an article today in remembrance of the great man.

Bobby was great at making statements that were not quite right and an example of those was when he said – “we scored nine and you cannot score more than that” – following an 8-0 win at St. James’ Park against Sheffield Wednesday in his first home game as Newcastle manager back in 1999.

bobby robson

Sir Bobby Robson – come on lads!!

Here are 10 memorable quotes from the great man.

  • “We didn’t underestimate them. They were just a lot better than we thought.”
  • “I’m not going to look beyond the semi-final – but I would love to lead Newcastle out at the final.”
  • “He never fails to hit the target. But that was a miss.”
  • “Look at those olive trees! They’re 200 years old – from before the time of Christ.”
  • “In the first half he took a corner, a poor corner, which hit the first defender, and it took him 17 minutes to get back to the halfway line.” (talking about our former French  winger Laurent Robert)
  • “With Maradona, even Arsenal would have won the World Cup.” (talking about the 1986 World Cup)
  • “Eighteen months ago Sweden were arguably one of the best three teams in Europe, and that would include Germany, Holland, Russia and anybody else if you like.”
  • “Gary Speed has never played better, never looked fitter, never been older.”
  • “He’s the only man I know who could start an argument with himself” (talking about former Newcastle striker Craig Bellamy)
  • “Home advantage gives you an advantage.”

Sir Bobby Robson was a great man indeed and the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation continues to thrive.

Here’s 23 minutes of that 8-0 win for those fans who haven’t seen the game or the goals, and remember at the time Newcastle were second bottom of the league and Sheffield Wednesday were bottom – and it includes all the goals – there were eight of them.

Are their other quotes you have of Bobby not quite saying things right?

Comments welcome.

My mate reckons he’s just seen Collocini flying out of Newcastle Airport …could be on his way out?

  • 2 Tsunki // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:00 PM

    Ashley Out!

  • 6 GeordieTwo // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:04 PM

Colo’s probably just flying back to Argie to have a quick holiday Archie mate. He is injured. Possibly he needs treatment elsewhere like Benny used to do.

    Repost on Anitagate –

Terry – his performance in the west ham game was just shy of outstanding, so he evidently can be a good player if he can dispense with whatever it was that was limiting him up until then. It may have been his attitude, or he may have had an epiphany on the last day. But I recall that there was a comment that for the last game that certain players asked to play in their ‘normal’ roles as up to then nothing had worked. I believe Anita and Jonas were two of them, possibly Sissoko as well. Therefore my deduction is that when played properly ( in an un-pardewed and un-carvered setup) Anita is actually the player we thought we had bought.

There was a late night football show that had resident fans on back in the day can’t remember what it was called. The resident Newcastle fan said to Bobby “I just want to see some free flowing attacking football” Bobby replied “What do you think I want to see? There are 11 players out there trying to stop me doing that and I’m not talking about the opposition”

  • 9 GS // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:08 PM

It is not really a quote from Robson but when Shola was asked what Bobby called him in training he said “Carl Cort”.

  • 10 GeordieTwo // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:09 PM

Lovely bit that soundoid mate @8. Now mates, we can’t afford to panic. We have got to get behind the club and cheer us on to that 13th place trophy so Mike can sell up!!!!

  • 13 GeordieTwo // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:10 PM

You were looking in the mirror will die mate. That can happen…..

  • 14 GeordieTwo // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:12 PM

We could have our own trophies made for this season. One for each position about 18th. That way we get silverware unless we get relegated!!! Huzzah!!!!

  • 15 croftus5678 // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:13 PM

tbh on the anita showing he can be good ! fergusson was awsome for us for 3-4 games in a row some seasons back and the same goes for bigi.

    and erm…obertan lol.

i can see what people see in anita esp from the hammers game and i really hope every one of our players finds great form inc ober but an estimated guess would suggest colback/sissoko/siem/wijnaldum/tiote would be ahead of him if i was picking the team with vukic/bigi/abied also in and around anita.

  • 16 Tsunki // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:20 PM

Erm Croftus you might get sued by the word ‘awesome’ for defamation if you bandy it about like that! 🙂

Fergy was ok for a few games but he bust a gut and put a few crosses in, not really awesome. Bigi had a good spell and even scored but I think ‘promise’ was more the word chucked around when we thought we had Tiote ‘s understudy. Something not very good happened to him though. Fergy on the other hand regressed.

I’d like to know what date the Obertan awesome
    Game was. ……. 😐

  • 17 GeordieTwo // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:20 PM

I’m just saying we don’t have to wait to win the league or one of the cups to get rid of Mike……

  • 18 GeordieTwo // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:23 PM

    Starting lineups against BMG lads?
    Janmaat problem problem Haidara
    Sissoko De Jong Colback
    Perez Mit the Wij

  • 19 dok - the horrid colonial // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:24 PM

you gotta say, those shirts are still great to look at…

  • 20 Tsunki // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:25 PM

On picking a midfield though, I’m kinda hoping SM has in mind at least two distinct team shapes and methods, unlike the previous incumbents whose hoof it high and long method strangely yielded little fruit. This would mean a radically different midfield depending on who we were facing. I would expect a different mid shape when facing say Swansea or Stoke, Bournemouth or Liverpool. I don’t think a central defence destroyer is the answer in all cases, in fact better possession and control would be preferable most of the time, so I would expect to see players who have quick feet, lower centre of gravity and good awareness against the better teams. That leaves Tiote out for a start.

  • 21 Tsunki // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:27 PM

G2 – seriously, the team against big should be virtually the team for Southampton. This is decent opposition. Are we better than Swansea? We will see. I will not feel well if tomorrow is another reserve-fest with our net bulging like a trawlers.

  • 22 will die for the toon army // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:29 PM

Wat happened to Cisee does he stll have It we partner him tomorrow with Mitrovic

  • 23 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:31 PM

Were only going to progress as a team if we get rid of players like Colback, Williamson, Dummett, Gouffran etc.

  • 24 GeordieTwo // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:32 PM

Spot on Tsunki mate @21. Let’s finally see what we’ve got.

  • 25 GeordieTwo // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:33 PM

No, not Colback Ketsy. He’s just fine to be in the squad thank you. How many of our players had more goals from midfield last season? He a good retriever of the ball as well.

  • 26 Tsunki // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:33 PM

Hey Ketsy your hero was on song that day! Speaking of songs, the Gilles De Bilde Bob the builder song still makes me chuckle.

Oh, and my goodness but we had an absolutely desperate bench that day lol.

  • 27 croftus5678 // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:33 PM

    @16 tsunki

leicester 18th oct 😉 mark it in the diary lol ner tbf he was effective in a few games either scoring or assisting.

still if i had the choice i’d replace him or pick someone else.

and i still think bigi is a good player ! he showed what he had in his locker even when played well out of position in the friendly we had not long back (american team) he’s strong an tackle and has a good pass as well as a good shot that we saw from his reserve game app’s

  • 28 GeordieTwo // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:33 PM

And very calm in possession. Harrumph….

  • 29 will die for the toon army // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:34 PM

    My team for BMG:
    Janmmatt……..S. Taylor…….Colo……Haidara
    …………………….. … …De Jong

  • 30 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:34 PM got a new look for this season on injury updates plus other snippets – worth a look.

  • 31 GeordieTwo // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:35 PM

Just leave the Ginger Pirlo alone Ketsy……or I’ll take away your multipass.

  • 32 Tsunki // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:36 PM

G2 no, no I think Tim was a better retriever of the ball. I distinctly remember him getting it back out of that nuisance stringy thing behind him quite a lot. In fact my next door neighbours Retriever is a better retriever.

  • 33 GeordieTwo // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:36 PM

Colo inured (calf/shin) will die mate so pick someone else there.

  • 34 Noel Worst // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:37 PM

Thats’s what I’d start with tomorrow. I expect Willo will be in place of Lascelles, perhaps even Colo given the soundbites coming from Schteve.

  • 35 croftus5678 // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:38 PM

can mbemba not play tomoz ?

  • 36 Tsunki // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:40 PM

Colo injured – will die? Oh no that’s sad…oh. Oh I see sorry.

  • 37 Tsunki // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:40 PM

Nope Croftus. Visa delay. Credit limit below £200

  • 38 GeordieTwo // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:41 PM

Yes, Tim is excellent Tsunki mate. Lots of practice (63 times in the league alone!). However I fancy Colback will stay in the starting XI most of the time. Tiote is done with us unless Steve can perform a miracle there. To me players like Abeid, and Gouffy are for the bench. Obertan wouldn’t even make a decent team’s squad. Horrible player (shudder). Bigi needs another loan but this time to a decent Championship side. Same with Vuckic. Fergie might be done and should be sold on so he can salvage his career.

  • 39 croftus5678 // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:42 PM

    @37 tsunki

    lol ah kk cheers mate.

  • 42 OneAlanShearer // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:43 PM

Marseille have apparently not given a squad number to their 20 year old 6ft2 Brazilian centre back Doria. Given the amount of time we must have spent scouting them maybe he is one of our targets…just putting it out there. Supposed to be a hot prospect.

  • 43 GeordieTwo // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:43 PM

Not Lascelles Noel mate. He’s not ready for it as we have seen in the runup so far. Needs to be eased in at some time for a few minutes against lesser clubs.

  • 44 Noel Worst // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:44 PM

Also, get Harps in as GK coach. He mentored Krul as a youngster and Krul’s decline coincided with Harps departure.

  • 45 GeordieTwo // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:44 PM

Yes we’re getting back to the old dead wood problem. Reminds me of the Wild West. Towns like Dry Gulch were full of dead wood and so are we.

  • 46 GeordieTwo // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:45 PM

    Mybimbo! Mybimbo!
    We all like Mybimbo!!!!

  • 47 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:46 PM

Colback and Tiote should leave. We can get Fer in who’s better than them both. Keep Anita because he’s useful.

    Good news!

  • 51 GeordieTwo // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:53 PM

A lot of you are saying “G2 can we not fob Obie off on Sunderland?” Yes very good suggestion lads. They just fobbed Wickham off on Palace after all. So they need a high scoring, pacey winger possibly. Food for thought there….Harrumph.

  • 52 will die for the toon army // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:54 PM

    Noel Worst

That attack failed to score goals against York city

  • 53 GeordieTwo // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:55 PM

I get VAT gas occasionally as well….

  • 57 Jib // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:59 PM

I think he means eduardo vargas a chilean on loan to QPR last season

  • 58 Noel Worst // Jul 31, 2015 at 7:59 PM

Obertan is useful once in a while, has spurts of good form, his last before he got injured was quite long and had people thinking he finally turned a corner. Steve Black might be able to get his head straight, I’d let him see out the remainder of his deal unless we bring another winger in. Now Gouffran, I think he has been terminally Pardewed. Long gone are the days of him being positively referred to as Gouffran-ran-ran etc and us thinking we got a snip of a deal, as it first appeared upon his arrival. He’d be gone before Obertan for me.

  • 59 GeordieTwo // Jul 31, 2015 at 8:03 PM

Just discussing appropriate terms to address the readership on another blog. Do you all favour “you scrotie lot” or “you scuzzbuckets”?

  • 60 GeordieTwo // Jul 31, 2015 at 8:05 PM

And can anyone on here explain to me what The Tale of Scrotie McBoogerballs is??

  • 61 GeordieTwo // Jul 31, 2015 at 8:06 PM

What is Obie useful for again Noel mate? I know he has fetched the vindaloo a couple of times but is that enough to be paid about 30K a week for 5 years? I mean that’s a lot of takeaway delivery mate…..

  • 62 GeordieTwo // Jul 31, 2015 at 8:09 PM

Ah, I see Jib @57. So it’s not a code for narsty effects from VAT then…

  • 63 GeordieTwo // Jul 31, 2015 at 8:11 PM

I think I’m just going to stick with “Hey you scuzzbuckets” for now then…..
