Newcastle have done quite well so far this summer in getting Gini Wijnaldum, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Chancel Mbemba through the door for around £35M – but as we’ve said before, we still need another three players at least if this summer transfer window is to be successful.
But with the new arrivals – however good they are – it will take some time for them to adjust to the rigors of the Premier League.
Fabricio Coloccini – Newcastle should keep him this season
So one of the things we cannot do is once we get all the players through the door, start to sell the ones who may not start for Newcastle next season.
Those players include Fabricio Coloccini, Mike Williamson, Steve Taylor and Cheick Tiote, who are all experienced Premier League players, and if we allow these players to leave – the squad will be weakened.
That’s especially true in defense, including defensive midfield (Cheick Tiote), with the defense having been our big weakness by far for three seasons now.
It’s almost like an insurance policy that we should keep these players at the club, even though is will cost us more on the wage bill, and it will mean we have a solid squad for the upcoming season.
We will pick up injuries this season, and we are second top of the Premier League injury table even now – with five injuries.
So it doesn’t look like a huge improvement will be made with our injury situation this season – although we are still hoping for an improvement.
Coloccini is one of those players we need to keep, and Steve McClaren has said he would like to see Colo play before he makes any decision on the 33 year-old Argentine International.
This is what Steve had said about his current captain today:
“I’ve heard speculation about a move to Palace, but I’ve come in and said to Lee Charnley, the Managing Director and the Board that we want to see him training and playing.”
“I haven’t done that so I can’t make a decision on the future at the present moment.”
McClaren has already said Colo has looked good in training, and that he is obviously one of Newcastle’s best players, although he played poorly and showed poor leadership in the second half of the disaster of last season.
As Steve McClaren points out, there have been rumors over the summer that Alan Pardew wants to sign Coloccini for Palace, and maybe give him a two year deal, but the challenge for Palace would be to meet his £60K/week wages he gets on Tyneside.
We are very pleased with what Newcastle have done so far this summer, but if we let some of our good players leave over the last two weeks of the transfer window, that could turn out to be a big mistake.
The other player we mustn’t sell this summer is Moussa Sissoko, and there are reports that Liverpool are ready to pay out £18M for him – but we must keep Sissoko on Tyneside.
Moussa’s best chance of getting into the French squad for the Euro 2016 Championships next summer in France, would be to stay on Tyneside, where he will get plenty of games.
That would not necessarily be true if he moved to Liverpool or some other top six club.
Players we could let go this summer include Vuckic, Ferguson, Marveaux, Obertan and maybe Abeid to reduce the wage bill.
What do you think?

Comment #47Marveaux won’t be going anywhere. We need him. He will good to come on from the bench. We must keep Abeid as well. We need to get rid of these players:
Colback
Williamson
Dummett
Ferguson
Tiote?
Riviere
Obertan
I also think Andros Townsend would be a great coup. A £10-12m deal for him would be great. I still think we need a faster striker than Austin but I’d rather have Austin than nobody.

Comment #49Obertan won’t leave as he’s still in contract with us Ketsy. And certainly Colback won’t be going anywhere either. In his second season and he was a free and he was decent last season in a number of statistical assessments. Dummett won’t be leaving either (no demand for him and he still has a contract) and it’s very likely Riviere won’t leave either (not after the horror show of last season and still on contract). Try again Ketsy.

Comment #52Marveaux will go out on loan if fit enough. I would guess Bigi and Fergie will as well. That would get us down to 25 unless more players are brought in or sold obviously.

Comment #54Why does Janmaat have the no 22 shirt? Surely that guy’s number should be penned in first, I hope there’s not some nasty underlying plot that’ll give the fat slob profit!
We need at least 1 more CB. If Mclaren thinks our defence is good enough then we’ll all know why he’s been sacked from every job he’s had.
Williamson and Goofy shouldn’t be anywhere near the 1st eleven, they suck balls!!
I’m happy enough with the rest of the squad and new backroom staff, just sign a decent CB FFS!!

Comment #58Terry – his performance in the west ham game was just shy of outstanding, so he evidently can be a good player if he can dispense with whatever it was that was limiting him up until then. It may have been his attitude, or he may have had an epiphany on the last day. But I recall that there was a comment that for the last game that certain players asked to play in their ‘normal’ roles as up to then nothing had worked. I believe Anita and Jonas were two of them, possibly Sissoko as well. Therefore my deduction is that when played properly ( in an un-pardewed and un-carvered setup) Anita is actually the player we thought we had bought.

I think our defensive quota is at capacity now (although heavy on cb, light on fb) and would be happy with a one in one out policy from now.
