Newcastle Reported After Experienced England International

There are several reports that Manchester United’s Ashley Young could be leaving the club after four years on board, with new £25M signing Memphis Depay having pushed Young down the pecking order at the Red Devils.

The Daily Star is reporting that Newcastle are interested in the winger, and we have been after Frecnh U21 Florian Thauvin of Marseilles,  but have not had success getting him to Tyneside – not yet anyway.

But Young does not fit the usual profile of players Newcastle like to sign, although he is an experienced player who previously played at Watford and Aston Villa with great success.

Angel Di Maria is likely to leave Manchester United after only one season at the club, as he looks to move to PSG, but Louis van Gaal is looking to bring in Pedro from Barcelona to replace him.

Other than age, the other thing that will put Newcastle off  Young is he is reportedly getting a massive £120K/week in wages, and paying out big money for players 30 or over is not something that Newcastle do these days.

Young has just one year left on his contract and he wants a new deal at the Red Devils, and the positive for Newcastle is that Young would cost a fairly reasonable £8M, and that’s a lot less then Florian Thauvin will cost.

Liverpool and Tottenham are the two other clubs said to be interested in signing Young.

This is what a Manchester source has told the Star about Young:

“He is aware that competition for places will be stronger than ever and it looks like Pedro is also heading to United.”

“He’s doesn’t want to leave, but doesn’t want to become just a squad man either because at his age he needs regular first team football.”

“If no offer of a contract extension is made then he will see what his options elsewhere are looking like.”

With Steve McClaren in charge at Newcastle, it may be that he sees Young as a decent buy at just £8M, but we’d still be surprised if Newcastle are interested in signing a 30 year-old winger, rather than one who is 22.

But you never know.

Ashley Young has played 122 times for Manchester United with 13 goals and 28 assists,  since joining them four years ago from Aston Villa for around £20M.

He has played 30 times for England with 7 goals.
