Here’s the best we can find for the video highlights – it’s the Fox video – but it does show the two times Newcastle hit the post in this game, and the poor goal we gave away to lose our last pre-season friendly.

paul simpson and steve mcclaren

Paul Simpson and Steve McClaren today

Here’s the video.

I hope this isn’t you starting to moan about people moaning again Welshie

  • 11 Rotonda heights // Aug 1, 2015 at 8:06 PM

i think the concern is mainly confined to saylor and willo and why the hell with 1 week to go we have only bought in 1 CB defender!

  • 12 Noel Worst // Aug 1, 2015 at 8:08 PM

I just ignore them. They’re either middle-aged bitter blokes with other issues and NUFC is their pinata, or air-headed young, football management sim fanatics with no grip on reality.

Where is the link for not us being interested in Austin?

  • 14 Totallytea // Aug 1, 2015 at 8:09 PM

Obertan attempting to cross and outstep players. Poor. Williamson attempting to look natural with the ball at his feet. Poorer. Sissoko attempting to do anything than look like a pony in a horse race. Laughable.

  • 15 the broons // Aug 1, 2015 at 8:10 PM

    was at the game today.

Honestly i will give you my opinion.
Was actually pleasantly surprised with how toon played, however as I told Iamtoon our centre backs are terrible, and just cos taylor was worst than williamson today doesnt mean that he may be good enough… hes not!

If a centre back isn’t signed by the southampton game then its bad, if a centre back isnt signed by the end of this window, then all the hard work made to achieve everything we have so far gets outdone. Rudiger from stutgart, put 15 mil in for him and give wages matching taylors and put him on a 5 year contract. thats the only other thing we need to do this window ahh and get rid of the deadwood. And if someone comes in big for sissoko accept.

  • 16 welshgeordie9 // Aug 1, 2015 at 8:11 PM

    Now would i do that.

    Ha ha ha

  • 17 will die for the toon army // Aug 1, 2015 at 8:13 PM

    the broons

Sissoko has failed to change and Taylor is our worst CB now.

  • 18 welshgeordie9 // Aug 1, 2015 at 8:14 PM

sissoko has dissapointed me, if he wants to leave then so be it, replace him with someone who wants to be here.

  • 19 Jack // Aug 1, 2015 at 8:14 PM

Look at all this moaning, good luck McClaren. No matter what you do you will still find ‘fans’ complaining, wont be able to do anything right.

  • 20 gonufc (Newcastle United Sports Direct Advertising Club) // Aug 1, 2015 at 8:15 PM

I agree on Sissoko- if someone bids 20m I’d accept now.

His attitude when he got sent off at the end of last season was just awful- looked like he couldn’t be arsed so just swung his leg and walked.

  • 21 welshgeordie9 // Aug 1, 2015 at 8:16 PM

Are you feeling alright, agreeing with me, i noticed your comment the other day.

  • 22 welshgeordie9 // Aug 1, 2015 at 8:19 PM

gonufc (Newcastle United Sports Direct Advertising Club)

Apart from hitting the Woodwork he didn’t do much, shame really, when he first joined the club he was one of my favourite players.

  • 23 Geremi's Prosthetic Leg Fund // Aug 1, 2015 at 8:19 PM

I think things will take time and there are a few signs that there is positive change.

Mitrovic already looks twice the player Cisse is, putting himself about, linking up fairly well and winning headers.

Mbemba looked everything we need at CB, yet played RB.

I’m dreading that everything positive that has been done will simply be undermined by shocking CB play when we inevitably fail to field the first choice partnership.

Simply put, we need 2-3 more top players. I don’t think we’ll get them, and if we get 1 or 2 we will already have lost ground as we will have played a couple of tough games.

Saints game I can’t see anything other than a loss, unfortunately. I think we will play decently but the defence will ultimately cost us.

  • 24 Totallytea // Aug 1, 2015 at 8:19 PM

Anita controlling from the back of the park. Good. Link up and understanding between hairdryer and Aaron’s, nice. Watching Mitrovic go after through and over the top of anyone in his way. The best part of being at the match. The guy is a tank. Lots of things to be pleased about, but lots of worries too.

  • 25 hibbit // Aug 1, 2015 at 8:21 PM

welsh / scout……. not moaning about a knock about this was the last game before the season starts and people on here are talking about improvement we have 1 decent defender and 1 coming in people calling willo and praising 10 game taylor……. not a leader on the pitch where’s the improvement we all know the result is not important but the performance should be………..oberton a footballer never

  • 26 Belfast // Aug 1, 2015 at 8:21 PM

You won’t get 20 million for Sissoko. For all the shite he talks I don’t believe any of the clubs he mentions are interested in him.

  • 27 will die for the toon army // Aug 1, 2015 at 8:28 PM

If some one gave me 12m for Sissoko I wld takee I without hestating. Sissoko is so poor. He is still like a headless chicken Obertan Aarons and Perez have played better than him. If Cisse Colo Ssissoko dont want to be here let them leave.

  • 30 gonufc (Newcastle United Sports Direct Advertising Club) // Aug 1, 2015 at 8:29 PM

It’s the price which was talked about before.

I agree, I really liked him, I just don’t believe he’s motivated by playing for Newcastle- he always saw us as a stepping stone I think.

He always seems like he’s keeping something back when playing now, as I say, like he’s not motivated enough to not play with something withheld.

  • 31 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 1, 2015 at 8:32 PM

This horse for the cart is like a pantomime horse. We’ve got the semblance of a front end but only one leg at the back. What’s Charnley and Carr playing at?

  • 32 lukes26 // Aug 1, 2015 at 8:35 PM

    Uh, Sissoko isnt “poor”

he just doesnt have wide range of passing skills & a slight liability defensively

he’s just more of a headache for a manager. he has intangibles that make him so difficult to defend.

Very strong, very fast & has end product.

  • 33 The Newcastle Armchair // Aug 1, 2015 at 8:42 PM

Constantly we see Obertan outsprinting his man, getting yards of space, then dribbling in from the byline to either get tackled, put it out, or low cross to the opposing team.

I was hoping McClaren would tell him to beat his man and put an early cross in, but even today he was up to his no good shenanigans. I even saw him get to the byline and literally dink it to their player.

  • 38 Polarboy // Aug 1, 2015 at 8:59 PM

McClaren talking about Austin after the game:

Speaking after Newcastle lost 1-0 to Borussia Monchengladbach today, McClaren said: “There’s been a lot of talk about that throughout the weeks but weve not been in contact with QPR and they’ve not with us so no, that’s just a name that circulates and has beeen going around.”

  • 39 Jail for Ashley // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:00 PM

@Jail for Ashley. Why not just leave to the complaining to if or when we haven’t made the requisite recruitment after the window closes. Sure it would have been much better to have had all the players in by now but good players are hard to get.

  • 46 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:11 PM

Its funny but if Sissoko put in 100% effort and commitment into every game he probably would get his dream move !

For a big guy he hardly bullies anyone !!

  • 47 WWSBRD // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:15 PM

Felt it covers my feelings well. I could go through each player but can’t really be bothered

Set up doesn’t match the squad that played though and crossing instructions were far too slow

  • 48 John Tudor // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:16 PM

failing to plan is planning to fail
those initial games with what we have now 1 point if we are lucky and if taylor and williamson go missing

  • 49 Jail for Ashley // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:19 PM

    I was asking a question !

  • 50 toon kk // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:22 PM

All this crap of getting 20mil for Sissoko is ridiculous, we haven’t one player worth 10mil. Every player we have has reduced by at least 50%, there value may go up if we can prove something. Unfortunately the board seem to think we’re capable of staying in the premier league with a defence which would really struggle in league 2.

  • 51 ShirebrookToon // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:22 PM

Does anybody think we will make anymore signing this window or is that it?

  • 52 Polarboy // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:24 PM

@Jail for Ashley. Well if you were actually asking a genuine question, that would be one thing, but I don’t think I could be criticised for assuming a comment on here would be snarky or sarcastic in tone.

  • 54 the broons // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:25 PM

By the way we have to find a way to fit both wijnaldum and de jong into our team, by far our 2 most talented players technically.

  • 55 the broons // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:27 PM

    shirebrook toon,

Unfortunately i think that will be it, however it shouldnt even just one more centre back would make me more than satisfied. No centre back and am back to beignfed up of our lacklustre defence.

  • 56 WWSBRD // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:28 PM

Wini in the spot he finished in today and de Jong as no 10 behind Cisse or Mitrovic

  • 57 Jack // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:31 PM

We will be fine stop worrying…

Williamson is clearly a premiership standard CH, Mitrovic looks very hungry for goals.

But us fans getting on there backs after a bad performance isn’t what they need. Look at you all already complaining and it’s pre-season. Can’t wait too see what you’re all like when the season starts.

  • 58 will die for the toon army // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:32 PM

Wijnaldum shld play deeper and De Jong in the No. 10 behind Mitrovic not Cisse. I wld bench Anita or Colback.

  • 59 the broons // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:33 PM

Yep however we need atleast one holding midfielder in there who will do the hard stuff when we dont have the ball, and protection to the back four.

  • 60 John Tudor // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:33 PM

    just wait and see

  • 61 gonufc (Newcastle United Sports Direct Advertising Club) // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:34 PM

To be fair, look at the prices of players this summer- it’s gone even crazier.

If Jordan Rhodes is supposedly worth 15m then a French international CM could easily be worth 5m more!

  • 62 Pardews Priceless Bulls#*t // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:34 PM

Got to say while I agree our defence has been poor there is a lot of hyperbole on here “would struggle in league 2”, “league 1 at best” etc.
Yeah we will struggle if our first choice centre backs are willo and taylor, and yeah ideally we want one more cb, but with improved possession play and our cdm playing better quick simple balls to players actually showing some movement it will take at least a little pressure off the under par defence. I’m not saying we will definitely be top ten but I think we will at least be pushing it. I also believe we will strengthen in the next two windows. Baby steps, hopefully they work

  • 63 ToonFromLeeds // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:35 PM

I am getting there, today we were good in spells, Obertan played really well imo and Cisse looked awful. I must say although we have a poor defence that needs desperately upgrading, Willo was better than Taylor

  • 64 WWSBRD // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:35 PM

    will die/broons
I’d assume the plan will be a midfield triangle with de Jong ahead of Wini and Colback/Anita/Tiote…my preferred being Tiote tbh though by the looks of it it’ll be Anita

  • 65 the broons // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:36 PM

    will die for toon army

Disagree, we need him arrivng late into the box for goals. I don’t always believe in playing 2 number 10’s however when we have 2 as good as that it would be a waste.

  • 66 martoon // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:36 PM

I was at the match today and was actually quite encouraged by our setup and patterns of play. The atmosphere was very flat – typical of a pre-season friendly which made the game appear more boring than it actually was. Yes our defence wasn’t great but I actually thought Saylor was quite decent and was played into trouble by Aarons. The new players were great especially Gini who I thought had a great game.

  • 67 Pardews Priceless Bulls#*t // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:37 PM

Will die I think that should definitely be the setup against weaker teams and at home, then in more defensive need bring the benched cdm back in

  • 68 toon kk // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:37 PM

    The broons
de jong is very injury prone, so it soon won’t be an issue of fitting him and Wijnaldum into the team.

  • 69 WWSBRD // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:38 PM

Cisse was furious today because Wini didn’t support him or listen while he was playing no 10. I thought Cisse was decent enough today but he was alone up front again feeding off scraps which worried me a lot

  • 70 the broons // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:40 PM

Glad that am ot the only one that favours tiote over colback.

A little game for fellow bloggers, next game watch how many times colback gets caught on the wrong side of the opposing player and gives away a foul.

  • 71 will die for the toon army // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:42 PM

Get a DCM and A hard working CBs in Mbemba and Willo/Taylor to do their dirty work. We need progress in the final third and they both bring creativity.

  • 72 the broons // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:42 PM

  • 75 WWSBRD // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:44 PM

I actually like Colback mate haha but for the job needed Tiote has better attributes and I just don’t rate Anita tbh

  • 76 Tinman // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:48 PM

Honestly don’t think Collo and Mbemba will do too badly at CB. It’s the cover behind which worries me a lot. Is Lascelles useless?

Would be great if we signed Van Dijk, but for the first 6months at least I think the CBs will be Collo +1. Can’t see a manager lining up two new CBs together, surely isn’t a wise decision. And unfortunately Collo is the best of a bad bunch. That being said, Stevo seems to really rate Collo.

  • 77 ToonFromLeeds // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:48 PM

  • 78 beermonkey // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:49 PM

obertan was ok but did very little with the opportunities there was some lovely balls played to him using his pace but that’s where it ended no end product

overall I didn’t think it was that bad could see the changes but u can also see its going to take time before it all comes together

  • 79 corkypants // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:49 PM

you can tell we have been working hard on shape and positioning they just need to play with some freedom now and find that cutting edge hopefully that will come against southampton

  • 80 toon kk // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:50 PM

One of the biggest issues I have is lack of real pace in our squad, take Aarons out and we just can’t keep up with pacy teams. You can sacrifice a little quality if a team has pace.

  • 81 Tinman // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:50 PM

People who say De Jong is injury prone don’t know shit. He has had an unlucky spell, maybe that will continue. But before that at Ajax he was playing 30+ games every season. I posted the stats a while ago but can’t be arsed to do it again, usually these people prefer to ignore the facts…

  • 82 the broons // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:50 PM

Colback would be brilliant if he was actually used as a defensive midfielder, his problem is that he always get caught chasing back and its much harder to win the ball in that positiion then in a position where he can see the play ahead of him.

make no mistake as far as defensive midfielders go we have tiote and colback, anita should be considered as a central midfielder who is too weak to be a defensive midfielder.

  • 83 the broons // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:52 PM

All I know is the lads a player.

  • 84 Tinman // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:52 PM

    Toon kk,

Wini has got some pace too. But beyond that it is lacking. Mbemba seems to be quick, but I guess you’re talking in more of an attacking sense. I wonder how Cabella will do under McClaren, box of tricks, but doesn’t have that raw pace either.

  • 85 will die for the toon army // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:52 PM

Tiote will win the balls but will fail to make e easy pas

  • 86 Tinman // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:53 PM

    the broons,

Yeah I’m excited to see De Jong this season too. I think he is perfect for the number 10 we have been crying out for.

  • 87 WWSBRD // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:55 PM

Mitrovic and Cisse for me then haha Perez and Rivi back up. I think the set up could work with 1 up top but it’s paper thin in terms of injuries and we need a RW not Sissoko for me

Could be right on that tbh he seems to play the box to box role which he is ok with but not great maybe as out right CDM he could do better.

Anita is just surplus to requirements to me bud

  • 88 the broons // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:56 PM

    will die for toon army

I actually think he can play the simple pass, only he trys too much the hard pass. and taking on too many players when he quite clearly can’t.

  • 89 OneAlanShearer // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:56 PM

    Here’s how I see it.

They have under invested for 7 years. Which now means we have a walking wounded in defence. They didn’t improve on the positions we lacked in, instead they sold the better players and brought in more gambles. Some paid off but that flawed policy has left us with a mish mash of players half of which aren’t good enough for the premier league.
So they realise they have made an error and think they can replace the side with 4 players per window…I suspect they aren’t telling us that will be the summer Window only. In the meantime players will leave and they will repeat the mess they already made.

I hope I am wrong but I don’t think we are in for austin at all. I think we may get more player in this window. And in fact Mbemba is colo’s replacement, Wijnaldum is sissoko’s replacement, mitrovic is cisse’s replacement.

They are yet again trying to pull the wool over our eyes.

They hide the lies within the truth by saying it will take 3 windows. The words that are missing are in the meantime you will have to hope we don’t get a decent offer for the replacement player and the squad depth won’t improve.

If we don’t sign 6 first team players and keep our best players nothing has changed. They did the same thing when they signed 5 players..2 of which had been brought forward.

  • 90 WWSBRD // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:57 PM

    will die
He did it fine when Cabaye was beside him not too long ago mate

  • 91 Tinman // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:57 PM

Based on his recent performances I think Anita might be the one who gets given the nod to sit in front of the back 4. That could mean Tiote is surplus to requirements, but think that one would be done in Jan. I always liked Anita but still worry he doesn’t have the physicality for the Premier League. Wini looks like he is willing to put in a shift too, won the ball back once or twice today. I would play him alongside Anita with De Jong ahead of them. Wini would need to have license to roam so that would mean the DM would have to be very disciplined and positionally aware. Anita seems to be better postionally than both Colback and Tiote.

How much smaller is Anita than Colback anyway? Nobody ever mentions that Colback is a small lad himself

  • 92 ToonFromLeeds // Aug 1, 2015 at 9:57 PM

    Janmaat Willamson Mbemba Haidara

    Colback Wijnaldum

    Sissoko De Jong Aarons

This will probably be lineup against Southampton, I haven’t included Colo because I Think he’s off

    Colback 5ft 9, 165lbs
    Anita 5ft 6, 145lbs
    Tiote 5ft 11, 189lbs

  • 95 toon kk // Aug 1, 2015 at 10:04 PM

De jong will make a great sub/game changer you need someone like him to change a game. We badly lack back up in depth.

  • 96 Tinman // Aug 1, 2015 at 10:04 PM

I think Collo will stay. Why would he be involved in a friendly when we have one week till the season starts and he is seen as a key player by the Manager. Honestly think only Pardew would be dumb enough to buy him from us too.

Plus it is probably a better option for him. Everybody knows he wants to play for San Lorenzo but they can’t afford him. If he signs for a new club there is no way it will be on a one year deal like it is here. So if he wants to go home then his best bet would be to stay here and go next summer.

    Does that not make sense?

  • 97 Tinman // Aug 1, 2015 at 10:06 PM

For me De Jong has to be a starter.

    Arrons, De Jong, Sissoko
    Wijnaldum, Tiote

That would be my 5 man midfield.

  • 98 toon kk // Aug 1, 2015 at 10:07 PM

Anita isn’t a bad player, but he’s far too light weight for the premier league.

Wijnaldum needs to support the striker centrally and so does sdj. Playing Wijnaldum in the 2 of a 4231 is a waste of his attacking skills. Leaving sdj on the bench is a waste of his passing talent. We need to play a formation to fit the qualities we have and for me it’s that. Colback sits back. Anita would be his sub cover. Sissoko and either aarons or perez play as wide midfield. Mitrovic lone striker. The problems come when any of those are injured.
Gouffran, obertan, Marveaux as alternates just don’t cut it. Let them go and replace them for pity sake.

    Tin man
I agree de jong should be part of our mid field, but who’ve we got to freshen up the team as a sub?

Toon kk. That’s exactly what frustrates me when people say we already have an over crowded midfield. No we don’t we have loads of midfield players but only about 5 or 6 who should be anywhere near the first team and only 4 I wouldn’t replace.

    Half measures from Ashley again

Haven’t seen too much of SDJ but could he not play deeper than Wijnaldum? From what people say SDJ is more of a passer and Wiji is more of a runner, so wouldn’t SDJ be suited the deeper role? Or is SDJ just not combative enough?

I was at the game and to a man everyone in my section seemed dissapointed. Not with the result just the performance. The team have clearly been working on their shape and kept it pretty well all through the game. Anita, Colback were pretty effective in their roles. The concerns are legitimately around several players. Obertan still has only one weapon. Pace. He still struggles badly to use it properly. Sissokos touch and general all round play was rotten, maybe he wasn’t motivated to perform in a friendly but he looked Pathetic and his work rate was sub par. Willo was ok for a change but I’ve seen to much previously to convince me he is a premier quality CB and then Saylor. Can’t stay fit and when he does there’s always a mistake in him. They’re obviously going to be our CB paiting for Soton and that a massive concern.

Positives? Mitrovic and Mbemba looked classy especially the latter who will make an incredible CB I think.

We need another CB a winger and maybe a LB then I’d be happy.
