Steve McClaren has said today that he will soon be able to know which players he will rely on for next season, and those that can go will either be sold or will be sent out on loan, and the time of reckoning is not far off.
Steve has now had a chance to assess the form of all the players except one – Fabricio Coloccini – who is still having problems with that Achilles of his, and he hasn’t played one minute of pre-season football,
Hopefully he can play today against Borussia Monchengladbach in just over an hour, but some local reports say he will still not be fit enough.
Steve McClaren – wants about 18-20 players for the core of the team
The concern we have is that Steve will sell or loan out too many players, and he talks about keeping 18-20 players as the core of the team – but we get so many injuries we are wondering if that will be enough.
This is what Steve McClaren has said in the local press today:
“I think the key thing is come in and give everybody a chance, and I think that’s what we’ve done,” “Some have done really well and some have disappointed.”
“You’re finding out about them.” “I’m delighted with the work they’ve put in.” “Now, we’ll sit down and assess the squad and try and think about 18 or 20 players,” .
“That’s who’ll we’ll pick from – they’re the ones – and we’ll decide on where the others go.” “Some will go out on loan, some we’ll try to sell.”
“I think that conversation will come about very soon.”
If we do allow our older players to leave, it will also create a lack of experience in the squad.
Our three new players brought in – Wijnaldum, Mitrovic and Mbemba – will need time to settle in, and the Nottingham Forest players who have just joined us after being signed last year, Karl Darlow and Jamaal Lascelles have no Premier League experience.
But McClaren has been savvy enough about giving all the players a chance and taking a good look at them for himself, and that’s after the disastrous five months under John Carver, when everything seemed to collapse under its own weight, and we were almost relegated.
We are also hoping Newcastle can still bring in three more players this month in the transfer window.
It will be interesting to see who Steve allows to leave the club via transfer – and that decision may even come next week.
What do you think?
