Steve McClaren To Have Big Clear-Out At Newcastle

1:34 pm, Saturday, August 1st, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 36 Comments

Steve McClaren has said today that he will soon be able to know which players he will rely on for next season, and those that can go will either  be sold or will be sent out on loan, and the time of reckoning is not far off.

Steve has now had a chance to assess the form of all the players except one – Fabricio Coloccini – who is still having problems with that Achilles of his, and he hasn’t played one minute of pre-season football,

Hopefully he can play today against Borussia Monchengladbach in just over an hour, but some local reports say he will still not be fit enough.

Steve McClaren – wants about 18-20 players for the core of the team

The concern we have is that Steve will sell or loan out too many players, and he talks about keeping 18-20 players as the core of the team – but we get so many injuries we are wondering if that will be enough.

This is what Steve McClaren has said in the local press today:

“I think the key thing is come in and give everybody a chance, and I think that’s what we’ve done,” “Some have done really well and some have disappointed.”

“You’re finding out about them.” “I’m delighted with the work they’ve put in.” “Now, we’ll sit down and assess the squad and try and think about 18 or 20 players,” .

“That’s who’ll we’ll pick from – they’re the ones – and we’ll decide on where the others go.” “Some will go out on loan, some we’ll try to sell.”

“I think that conversation will come about very soon.”

If we do allow our older players to leave, it will also create a lack of experience in the squad.

Our three new players brought in – Wijnaldum, Mitrovic and Mbemba – will need time to settle in, and the Nottingham Forest players who have just joined us after being signed last year, Karl Darlow and Jamaal Lascelles have no Premier League experience.

But McClaren has been savvy enough about giving all the players a chance and taking a good look at them for himself,  and that’s after the disastrous five months under John Carver, when everything seemed to collapse under its own weight, and we were almost relegated.

We are also hoping Newcastle can still bring in three more players this month in the transfer window.

It will be interesting to see who Steve allows to leave the club via transfer – and that decision may even come next week.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

I’m sure he will have to go through the office and clear all the drawers out, Alans old betting slips and divorce hearing invites, Johnny C’s got a few of those plastic boxes with his plumbing tools and some speed fit pipe…

I was a bit harsh in retrospect, suggesting we double willo’s value by taping a packet of hob nobs to him. They should of course be those chocolate coated ones.

I have to disagree mate, I think you will price him out of the market by adding chocolate.

colo (ol permed hair) willo and saylor are collectively a poor mix and all have deficiencies -which has cost us goals a plenty.
Need to get shot of them all.
Don’t know what is going on with ol permed hair, not played yet and a suspicious injury (I think)- hopefully he’ll be joining King Percy.
Pre season has been a dogs dinner -so I’m not expecting a lot this afternoon -might be able to assess our new players -up to a point.
At this moment in time I’m guessing at a 12th- 14th league position. Depends I suppose who else is coming – probably Austin and at least one other.

it’s not just Colo he will want a look at, Tiote and the injured Marveaux

It will interesting to see who we can offload and what we’ll get for them, not a lot would be my guess.

A week to go boys and girls. Another week and reality comes a-knockin’. Let’s see what SM pushes out the tunnel to face BFG (BorussiaFreakin’Gladbach) – we’ll get a good idea of what’s in store for the next three months I’d say.

Car boot sale outside SJP, buy one crap player get one free

  • 12 expatmag // Aug 1, 2015 at 1:49 PM

If we could sell Colo, Wilo and Good fir 5 million and offer Celtic the 10 million they want, we could have a fairly decent central defensive options of Van Dijk, Mbembe, Taylor, Lascelles and Dummett with Satka loaned out to the championship

For once, we would have a lot if pace, strength, height and football ability in the middle if the defence. Add to that Van Dijk and Mbembe ability to score goals, we would have a defence as good as I have ever seen for the club.

Firebug yeah probably but I didn’t want to appear chocolatist.

  • 14 Tsunki // Aug 1, 2015 at 1:50 PM

JB – we wouldn’t need to put ‘ while stocks last ‘ on that sale either 😀

  • 15 TudorCrisps // Aug 1, 2015 at 1:52 PM

Andy najar of Anderlecht agent saying he is interested in EPL and that 2 of his friends have joined the magpies!!!

expat …..10 game taylor is not worth keeping even for back up

  • 17 JackButler // Aug 1, 2015 at 1:53 PM

It should be easy enough to sell Willo and Colo, as if Ashley can sell the crap he does at his tat emporium, selling those two should be no problem

  • 18 firebug666 // Aug 1, 2015 at 1:53 PM

Oh Yeah! Damn all this political correctness, how will we ever get rid of Williamson?

  • 19 davis_toons // Aug 1, 2015 at 1:54 PM

Williamson ..out..this guy cannot stay if we wants improvement on football terms since Staylor is back.

  • 20 israeli_fan // Aug 1, 2015 at 1:55 PM

for sure the game will streamed today as its live on israeli channel (sport2), so be ready!

  • 21 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 1, 2015 at 1:55 PM

Leeds were meant to be interested in Willo. Byram would be a good addition for us, so offer them £5million for Byram, or £7million plus Willo.

  • 22 firebug666 // Aug 1, 2015 at 1:57 PM

West Ham’s Enner Valencia suffers “significant” injury, no timetable for return

Wonder if that means they will go for Austin?

  • 23 Tsunki // Aug 1, 2015 at 1:57 PM

Mr Tuff, I’ve related this before – watched Colo pull up in the Gallowgate corner right in front of me after he hooked a ball clear over his head, holding his back. Met him at his house I was working in, he climbed three sets of stairs to get into the attic with his lad, who he helped up a double step at the top. He looked fine. It was two weeks until the derby and I asked if he was going to be ok for it. He just smiled and shrugged his shoulders. 😐

  • 24 Tsunki // Aug 1, 2015 at 1:59 PM

Firebug well we could try and dunk him in a large hot coffee. Oh wait, that’s the hobnobs. No, no it could still work….

  • 27 Tsunki // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:01 PM

Lilongwe, I follow your thinking. First prize a week in Scarborough. 2nd prize, 2 weeks in Scarborough…..

  • 28 Derek // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:02 PM

Happy to sell Sissoko, Tiote and Cisse if it meant every penny we got for them went toward a proven CB, RW and ST.

I’d then hope a new DM was on the cards for either loaning or a January signing, depending on how Colback and Anita perform for first half start of the season.

    Afternoon guys

I gotta feeling Charlie Austin will be ours before we play Southampton

GS @15 previous — Astute observation. Whilst interesting in Greek mythology Narcissus featured widely in Roman art. More significantly
I would suggest it is also widely featured in Freudian psychoanalysis .
Simply put a form of emotional immaturity or the promotion of self esteem or excessive involvement. In short it was Carver.
The good news is that Macca has displayed no such tendencies or features but the battle has not yet begun.
I discount friendlies to date but will draw from today’s game. As Transfer Sage- pointed out you can never have enough goals in your squad- Austin please.

  • 35 Bri // Aug 1, 2015 at 4:32 PM

    Haven’t been impressed whatsoever.
    Basically we are rubbish

  • 36 Rozzy // Aug 1, 2015 at 5:51 PM

Didn’t we Have Something like 13 players out at the same time last season so if we have a squad the size of 18-20 we are in trouble again. Is it the training pitch or something that’s the reason we have all these injury every year or the fact we buy injury prone players on the cheap?
