Williamson, Sissoko, Wijnaldum And Cisse Start This Afternoon

Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren has just named his team for this important last pre-season friendly game this afternoon against Borussia Monchengladbach at St. James’ Park, and this team will be close to the one that plays against Southampton a week tomorrow in our first Premier League game of the season.

Here are the two teams:

Newcastle (4-2-3-1): Tim Krul (c); Daryl Janmaat, Mike Williamson, Steven Taylor, Massadio Haidara; Vurnon Anita, Jack Colback; Moussa Sissoko, Georginio Wijnaldum, Gabriel Obertan; Papiss Cisse
Substitutes: Karl Darlow, Shane Ferguson, Chancel Mbemba, Jamaal Lascelles, Gael Bigirimana, Olivier Kemen, Mehdi Abeid, Siem de Jong, Yoan Gouffran, Rolando Aarons, Ayoze Perez, Aleksandar Mitrovic

Borussia Monchengladbach (4-4-2): Yann Sommer; Tony Jantschke (c), Andreas Christensen, Marvin Schulz, Oscar Wendt; Ibrahima Traore, Granit Xhaka, Mahmoud Dahoud, Patrick Herrmann; Lars Stindl, Raffael
Substitutes: Tobias Sippel, Roel Brouwers, Havard Nordtveit, Josip Drmic, Thorgan Hazard, Alvaro Dominguez, Fabian Johnson, Julian Korb, Branimir Hrgota, Marlon Ritter

Referee: Jon Moss

The surprise there is that there is no Siem de Jong in the starting lione-up, and Gabby Obertan starts ahead of Rolando Aarons.

There are 12 substitutes named for this game and they include Mbemba and Mitrovic – our two new signings – so we should see those two in the second half of this game.

It’s a 4-2-3-1 formation, and we assume that Wijnaldum will play in the withdrawn number 10 role – but we are not seeing both Wijnaldum and de Jong in the same starting line-up – which is strange.

Anita and Colback are again the two holding midfielders and we may see a lot more of Vurnon Anita this season under Steve McClaren, and he can be a decent player but he needs a run of games, which he has never really had at Newcastle since he joined us three years ago from Ajax.

He could well be a player who benefits from Steve McClaren’s arrival at Newcastle.

As expected Williamson and Taylor seem to be the best two center-backs we have – which is worrying – and why we quickly need to sign another top center-back quickly.

The main thing we will be looking at today is how the defense plays – and we have been poor this season so far.

A win today would be good – and with a good performance it would be even better.

    Ashley Out!

  • 3 JamesToon // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:02 PM

Why is it that Williamson is like undroppable at the moment, if he starts against saints then we’re in big trouble, the guy should have been gotten rid of a long time ago

  • 4 Reyantoon // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:02 PM

If anyone has access to Abu Dhabi channel,

Oh. Oh dear. Oh dear me. Oh dear me how.

  • 6 Ron Knee // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:04 PM

    Williamson!!!

  • 7 Derek // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:04 PM

Happy to sell Sissoko, Tiote and Cisse if it meant every penny we got for them went toward a proven CB, RW and ST.

I’d then hope a new DM was on the cards for either loaning or a January signing, depending on how Colback and Anita perform for first half start of the season.

And on top of the well discussed CB clear out, I’d like to get Gouffran and Obertan out!

  • 8 ROSHAN MAGPIE // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:04 PM

lascelles should have played instead of willo

  • 9 firebug666 // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:05 PM

This is looking like a game of two halves, think I’ll wait for the second half.

Maybe he is putting players in the shop window?

  • 10 Shadow_Shearer // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:05 PM

Let’s give mcclaren a chance before judging him. It’s not like we are half way through the season. We’re only in the preseason!!!

  • 11 JackButler // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:06 PM

Funny how Willo has become public enemy number one, the lad is no worse than Saylor or Colo, the latter being our captain who’s attitude stinks to high heaven

  • 12 Macas // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:06 PM

Roshan Magpie – Lascelles has looked worse than Williamson pre-season in the games I’ve seen. Built like a tank but unfortunately turns like one too

  • 13 Tsunki // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:06 PM

Hang on hang on everybody while I plug the fan in and switch it on.

  • 14 ROSHAN MAGPIE // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:07 PM

Colo not even on the bench

  • 15 Tsunki // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:07 PM

wilo and ober are out there for the sole purpose of given them one last shot to make the team. Cant say Schteve aint a fair guy.

  • 20 TudorCrisps // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:08 PM

no worse then colo or saylor, he’s in another league mate he’s appalling, i’d rather have james perch then willo

  • 21 JackButler // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:08 PM

    Roshan

He’s still injured by all accounts, starting to think there may be more to it though

  • 22 colwell // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:09 PM

Williamson and fcuking Obertan starting wtf those cnuts shouldn’t be anywhere near a prem squad

  • 23 Derek // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:09 PM

    JackButler,

I think most, myself included, would prefer all three of them out of the starting 11 equally.

  • 24 Tsunki // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:09 PM

Shadow shearer I don’t think everyone’s getting on at SM just yet. But when you see someone shaping up to step out in front of a bus……

  • 25 firebug666 // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:09 PM

    Tsunki

I agree, the hobnobs are harder and don’t crumble as easily as Williamson.

  • 26 Ian Toon // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:09 PM

Tsunki- I take it your not a cricket fan – the Scarborough cricket festival is great.

  • 27 Macas // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:09 PM

beermonkey – This might be the starting line up against Southampton, McClaren might play it safe and introduce the new players slowly

  • 28 ROSHAN MAGPIE // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:10 PM

oh well lets see how it goes no matter which player plays I will support the team under the new regime I’m done with all the hate under pardew and carver

  • 29 JackButler // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:11 PM

    Derek

I agree mate, just find it funny how one player has to be the focus of everything that’s wrong with us. Saylor is no better imo and Colo is a joke, but Willo is the man to face the wrath of everyone

  • 30 Tsunki // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:12 PM

Perhaps this is Steves last attempt to throw some of these players under the bus. Interesting to see the scoreline at half time. Could be his way of saying ‘ if you’re crap, look at the players you are going to be replaced by’…..

  • 31 ROSHAN MAGPIE // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:12 PM

JACKBUTLER guess Colo will move to palace

  • 33 WestOzMag // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:13 PM

Jog on mclaren with that formation. Pardewesque there. 1 up front at home is disgraceful. Add to that the 6ft4 nugget starts. Ill give this game a miss

  • 34 JackButler // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:14 PM

    Roshan

I think most people know my thoughts on Colo, but just to be clear, I think the man is a joke and should not have the honour of wearing our shirt and the sooner he’s a bad memory the better 🙂

Mcclaren might b on something. But let me patient.

Williamson first name on the shit. So I think we r going to play 4-2-3-1. Whole season

  • 39 Tsunki // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:15 PM

JB – it doesn’t minimise the faults of the others to say that Willo is the standout worst one. All the others can hold the ball when they are within 15 yards of an opposition player. All the others can play out from the keeper.

  • 40 ROSHAN MAGPIE // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:16 PM

agree with u jack abt Colo

  • 41 JackButler // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:17 PM

Not defending him by any means, but he’s one of a bad bunch we have at the back

  • 44 JamesToon // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:19 PM

really don’t get why ppl want 2 up front, unless we’re playing with no wingers, it just gets overrun in the midfield in the prem these days. high press 4231 what we’ll see i reckon

  • 45 TudorCrisps // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:19 PM

OK nearly killed bit OTT but still he’s a load of tosh mate and thats that really.

  • 46 Ian Toon // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:20 PM

I think we’re going to see a number of subs feature. Starting line up not indicative of side to feature against Saints I would suggest.

  • 47 JackButler // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:20 PM

    Tsunki

    Have you ever watched Saylor???

All the flaws you just listed about Willo are the exact same for Saylor, they are both poor in equal measures imo

  • 48 Ian Toon // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:20 PM

    Sorry Ed just my opinion.

  • 49 JackButler // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:21 PM

    Tudor

I know he’s rubbish but so are Saylor and Colo, but it’s Willo who’s singled out for the abuse

  • 50 colwell // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:22 PM

As its a friendly I can only hope Willamson has another nightmare which leads to a goal that along with the other mistakes he’s made in pre-season should be enough for McClaren to fcuk him off forever.

Saylor always injured, collo’s ageing rapidly, there is no excuse for willo he’s just simply not EPL standard by a long shot, I seriously think collo would play to his strenghs with a better partner than willo

  • 54 TudorCrisps // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:26 PM

  • 55 hibbit // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:27 PM

  • 56 Noel Worst // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:27 PM

Where the hell is Tiote? Missing for an age. Last I heard he reported back for pre-season out of shape, but surely he’s progressed enough to have some game time. Has he picked up an injury I haven’t heard about?

  • 57 Newcastle for alltid // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:29 PM

I seriously hope/expect we`ll see De Jong and Wijnaldum in the starting lineup together when the season starts. Anything else is just bizarre, and it would be like holding the team back on purpose. Like why would he even consider it? I have no idea why he never fields what is, in my opinion, our strongest team in pre-season. The positive side of me hopes it`s just to get two “strong” elevens. The negative side of me thinks he actually favours what everyone can see is a weaker side.

Besides, even seeing Williamsons name on the team sheet makes me wanna rip my hair out and eat it. How on earth have we never managed to offload this Tower of Nerves, Uncertainty, Hopelessness and Misery? He was a poor player aquired to get us through the Championship, and 5 years later he`s the first name to be put on the team sheet, even though everyone can see he`s hopeless. He`s always been hopeless. We just can`t get rid of him. It`s madness! How the hell does he hypnotize every manager into using him?

  • 63 Noel Worst // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:37 PM

Still think he’s unsure of a couple of players, in this line-up namely Obertan and Williamson. He wouldn’t have come in to the club with absolutely no preconceptions, that’s impossible to do. I’m sure he’s aware of the stick Willo gets and he’s giving him every chance before it matters to make his own judgement. I’m sure he’s one of those that has disappointed. Obertan however has had a decent pre-season and Schteve is probably watching him like a hawk, imagine he’s undecided on him.

    NOEL

Agreed about Tiote. Very strange indeed. Much like Colo, the while truth us not being told here and I expect them both gone before the Southampton game, Tiote to Russia, Colo to Palace. Compromises on fees being discussed and neither player being risked in friendlies.

Fatashley will claw back something like 8 million quid. Interesting to see if he reinvests. I wont be holding my breath. I fully expect no more incomings, Williamson to stay and Sissoko sold on deadline day for 20 million with no replacement. Abeid to Germany for a million as well and a net spend of 7 million pounds with the usual couldnt get them over the line excuses.

  • 69 Chawne // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:45 PM

Alot of people thought Wayne Routledge was useless, but since he moved to Swansea has been a decent contributor. Hopefully under SM new style Obertan can be more effective. We may even see alot more of his quick runs honoured with a decent pass

  • 70 Mister Tuff // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:46 PM

Looks like it’s going to be a dogs dinner of a game.
Really terrible pre-season – I cannot see that this game is going to sooth any concerns about our standard.
Hopefully Willo and Obertron will flunk their chances.

I look on this as a positive. All three CBs are probably for sale, for footballing and financial reasons. But the club are determined not to release any of them until there are replacements. Willo is not great, but do you really want to start against Soton with Satka?

Mbemba is still an Anderlecht player. He can’t play next week unless he gets his visa, and since you can’t apply while you are in UK, he has to fly out of the country to submit the application. There is a possibility still that the paperwork is not in place for next weekend due to some bureaucratic hitch. Plus it’s going to disrupt his training.

The fact is that we only have three recognised CBs on our books today, and one of them is not fit.

  • 77 jamesnufc86 // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:49 PM

Am I the only Newcastle fan in the world that would like to see Obertan get a good run of games ? He’s got blistering pace, he’s could be amazing with a bit of confidence, I actually like seeing him in the team, he’s more of a threat than Cabella

  • 78 Chawne // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:51 PM

I want to see Williamson vanish from our squad list too – but we won’t be challenging for the league this season. As long as they get in another CB before the end of the transfer window i will be happy enough. If the first 4-5games are written off it’s not the end of the world, they would be tough to win even with a second new CB..

Plenty of people making up excuses for why he has picked this poor side. Think this is what he thinks is the best team that’s fit and available which is just worrying. Seems to very much favour the “senior” players. Think he only sees Perez aarons as bench warmers and sees De Jong as back up to Wiji in both their preferred no. 10 role. Think everyone is going to be very disappointed against saints if they expect a different formation or mix of players

  • 86 Tsunki // Aug 1, 2015 at 2:57 PM

Taylor, fir all his fist pumping goonery and dimwitted horseplay onfield, is a fearless defender who attacks the ball and can head well, also can play the ball forward without just ramming his foot through it. I think that the hysteria about his injury record is beginning to rewrite his ability. On his day I would be far less worried with him in the back line than Willo at his peak, whatever that is.

Obertan works hard, he’s very quick, he’s skillful, he’s got a great leap, he just gets hammered every week by everyone, even when he had a good spell last season ppl were still tearing him a new one. I don’t want to see him start over the likes of Aarons or Perez, but I’m not against him staying, I think he’s a useful player, his major deficiencies are mental and we now have a supposed psychological guru in Steve Black on board, so he might be a real plus for somebody like Obertan, there’s no harm in Obertan remaining for the time being and he’s shown he can be a good weapon, particularly last season before he got his injury he was our best performer for a few games and had many thinking he’d finally cracked it. His contract is up at the end of the season anyway I believe. Yes, the deficit between how fans rate Cabella and how they rate Obertan has no reflection on what they’ve contributed to NUFC.

Interesting point on Black and Obertan. I couldn’t agree more.

I was at the sheff United game and he looked downtrodden and depressed.

By the end of the game he was the only one making any runs up front.

    Noel

I’ve been very critical of Moussa in here over the past week but I really don’t understand why any champions league team would want him.

He is a powerful player that is not really good at anything other than barging through players.

By all account Steve McC wants to build a team that plays as a team and I just can’t see Moussa doing that.

  • 123 LGFUAD21 // Aug 1, 2015 at 3:19 PM

Things like that are what anita can bring to the team.

He is comfortable on the ball and can keep things ticking over.

Still think he needs a tackler beside him though.

  • 145 GEORDIE69 // Aug 1, 2015 at 3:37 PM

How many chances does this formation create? We have not even had a shot on target! I bet we have had less then 7 shots on target in all our preseason games combined! 4-2-3-1 works for Chelsea, Arsenal and Real ect but so far not for us. 4-3-3 was the last formation that worked for us.

  • 155 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 1, 2015 at 3:42 PM

Like last pre season, Obertan is the best player. Maybe we should keep him or sell him for £3m.

Players like Colback, Williamson, Ferguson and Dummett need to be sold first.

  • 156 Noel Worst // Aug 1, 2015 at 3:43 PM

Now you can see why the likes of Brady go for £7m with his crossing ability.

  • 157 alkinou // Aug 1, 2015 at 3:43 PM

Obertan has combined quiete well with Janmaat since going on the left flank. Also showing some good first touches to bring down long balls.

  • 158 LGFUAD21 // Aug 1, 2015 at 3:44 PM

  • 159 Chawne // Aug 1, 2015 at 3:44 PM

i like the fact our defensive structure looks alot more organised. Considering most peoples comments about our terrible defence, it should be promising that we have not given any simple chances away. Mitro/aarons/perez arent on the pitch so not worried that we aren’t creating many chances atm. Will take longer to get the offensive movements in sync anyway

  • 191 WheresSholaNow // Aug 1, 2015 at 3:54 PM

Can’t see why people are moaning. The build up is more patient and attractive than under Pardew, Anita looks a good player again, Haidara and Aarons down the left will be exciting, Obertan’s been sharp, and we’ve still got Mitrovic, Mbemba and De Jong to come into the game. If we got another centre back and attacking midfielder that would see us through until January at least and we could go from there. I’m quite optimistic.

  • 192 Mister Tuff // Aug 1, 2015 at 3:56 PM

I know it’s just a friendly -but like watching paint dry. Nobody wants to get injured I suppose. So far our defence might as well been sitting in deck chairs – they really haven’t been tested.
Cisse crap control and Obertron is trying but he’s still a knacker.
They are obviously playing a bit higher up the park and giving the ball to Anita to distribute.
Might fall asleep in the second half.

playing nice pressing game and starting to move the ball nicely rather then the old long ball style.
Obertan is playing well but no end product and as for haidria he is getting a lot of ball and doing nothing with it needs to improve very lose with the ball and ends up lunging to get it back.

Krul still getting used to this ball retention stuff!

  • 231 toon kk // Aug 1, 2015 at 4:15 PM

    What’s the game like?
Reporting on ssn it’s a poor game with not much quality on show and very little for Newcastle fans to get excited about.

  • 232 Macas // Aug 1, 2015 at 4:15 PM

Terry – I said at the start it would probably be our starting lineup. Looks like he is being cautious with the 2 newest signings.

  • 233 JAMSHA // Aug 1, 2015 at 4:16 PM

    final balls are shit

  • 234 CypriotDelight // Aug 1, 2015 at 4:17 PM

Toon KK – sorry but I am enjoying it. Cold beer, warm sun and the Toon are back on tv. There were a lot worse games than this last season.

  • 235 JAMSHA // Aug 1, 2015 at 4:17 PM

get sisuxco out n cisse . bring in pitro, n mbemba as cm

  • 236 Big Pappa Cissé // Aug 1, 2015 at 4:17 PM

    @ Terry

That’s what is worrying me .

Collo is for sure out of that game as he hasn’t played this pre season and M’bemba has only just signed so I can’t see him being thrown in at the deep end either .

We should have had the majority of our signings done before we went to the USA and had them get match time .

  • 237 Noel Worst // Aug 1, 2015 at 4:18 PM

Obertan – deary me – that’s why you get stick, lad. An inexplicable total lack of concentration in a good position.

  • 238 mindshaft // Aug 1, 2015 at 4:19 PM

Obertan will never change – if we have him and Haidara on the left we can forget ever scoring a goal from a left sided cross

  • 239 CypriotDelight // Aug 1, 2015 at 4:19 PM

Not best in the final third true but at least we are trying 🙂
Obertan is like the series Lost – massive build up with a poop ending lol

  • 240 Noel Worst // Aug 1, 2015 at 4:19 PM

    Toon KK

Very pedestrian. Almost a procession for the sake of it. Still ,there are definite signs of change.

  • 242 Big Pappa Cissé // Aug 1, 2015 at 4:19 PM

Sucker punch. Looked like saylor gave it away

  • 254 lukes26 // Aug 1, 2015 at 4:24 PM

ok..that was mostly Aarons fault. not very smart

  • 255 Noel Worst // Aug 1, 2015 at 4:24 PM

Mitrovic instantly seems more switched on than Cisse, who always hesitates to press and gives the impression he sees it as a chore rather than an opportunity to force an error.

Well, well, at least Obertan didn’t do that. A side to Aarons perhaps Schteve sees more often in training and needs work. Then a classic NUFC defensive mix up, which always seem to involve Saylor. Big gob, but doesn’t use it effectively.

  • 256 Big Pappa Cissé // Aug 1, 2015 at 4:25 PM

Steven Taylor absolutely dreadful as well .

If him and Williamson start against Southampton we are screwed .

  • 257 Geremi's Prosthetic Leg Fund // Aug 1, 2015 at 4:25 PM

Sunday League defending will undermine everything we try to build going forward. Always been the case.

  • 264 Noel Worst // Aug 1, 2015 at 4:27 PM

Saylor is a common denominator in those type of defensive mix ups. Lack of communication. Why we need a commanding CB that takes control.

  • 265 Geremi's Prosthetic Leg Fund // Aug 1, 2015 at 4:27 PM

Apart from that we’ve been decent. Created a few chances against a good team. Saints will be another level next week though, I just hope we’re prepared.

  • 266 OneAlanShearer // Aug 1, 2015 at 4:27 PM

Yep we definitely do not need another centre back…let’s stick with Willo, saylor and Colo and ship 3, 4 or 5 goals a game.

We need another centre back…what the he’ll do they need to happen to make them realise this…..20 nil or what?

  • 267 JackButler // Aug 1, 2015 at 4:28 PM

    Don’t why anyone’s surprised tbh

  • 268 mindshaft // Aug 1, 2015 at 4:28 PM

Possibly Fern Cotton as she was there, probably not Shearer ( too tall ), maybe Beardsley ( same height ? ). Not Ant – he’s from Byker !
His p.a./ Agent Ali – she looks very bonny.

  • 270 Geremi's Prosthetic Leg Fund // Aug 1, 2015 at 4:29 PM

It’s ridiculous that Mbemba is playing RB. I can only assume he won’t be playing next week and it’s just to give him some minutes and rest Janmaat as we have no back up.

But this sort of Pardew set up with round pegs in square holes has to stop.

  • 271 Noel Worst // Aug 1, 2015 at 4:30 PM

Now he does his lazy tackle routine instead of holding the attacker up and gets carded. He did that against Sheff Utd too.

  • 288 toon kk // Aug 1, 2015 at 4:36 PM

Trouble is our squad needs a drastic overhaul, there’s far too many championship quality player’s who just can’t cope when they come up against a half decent side, three or four injuries down the line to key players we’ll be in another relegation scrap. .buying kids who may have promise is a massive gamble.

  • 289 nufcursed // Aug 1, 2015 at 4:37 PM

taylor is not as bad as williamson.
if taylor and mbemba were the central pair, that would be okay. as mbemba can compensate whatever taylor lacks..

the biggest problem we have is creativity up front. only aarons seems to be able to create something.
if he’s not starting next week…

also cabella should be in our first 11. most fans are slaying him off but he’ll come good i tell you.
at least he can create something, which mitrovic will need…
sissoko is more useless going forward than cabella

Mbemba has excellent technique, speed and strength. If he is actually played at CB he should prove a good player. We’ve crumbled at the back in every single pre season game, playing Saints competitively will only exacerbate that. He must play if possible regardless of game time.

  • 298 will die for the toon army // Aug 1, 2015 at 4:42 PM

2 crucial mistakes in quick succession cost us the match in an even game. Aarons too slack on the ball giving it away, then Saylor pussyfooting around with it when a competent CB would have either put his foot through it or tapped it back to the GK.

  • 321 firebug666 // Aug 1, 2015 at 4:52 PM

Nothing has changed it seems, Southampton must be relishing playing us after watching such a lacklustre display.

  • 330 nufcursed // Aug 1, 2015 at 4:54 PM

we’re a much more dangerous if players like de jong aarons and perez are on the pitch.
we need these technical players if we want to create chances for mitrovic..
sissoko cannot believe people here thinh he’s good. we need to sell him while someone still wants to pay a lot of money for him. we’ve got better options.

    also people don’t panic yet.
if mbemba plays in CB, that’s already one crap player out of the team. and we hit the woodwork twice, so there are positives.
gladbach are a top team in germany so we did ok!
mcclaren just needs to realize soon that he cannot make the same mistakes as pardew and carver and that is starting williamson, gouffran, obertan, sissoko, and all these crappy players

    our spine must be

Under pressure/on the back foot I think our defence will be easier to open than a tin of sardines. I see nothing to give any confidence at all.

I did a post a couple of weeks ago about Obertron in reply to those who said he acked confidence. Basically he was quoted as saying he should be in the French national team and also in a one on one situation he would back his ability every time.
NOT THE WORDS/ATTITUDE OF A PLAYER LACKING CONFIDENCE.

So to those who think he can be rescued/made into a decent footballer, if you excuse my expression, shut the **** up he a knacker, you are demonstrating a poor knowledge of the game/players abilities or lack of.
