Charlie Austin – Why I Am Not Playing For QPR Today

2:31 pm, Sunday, August 2nd, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 62 Comments

We had wondered whether QPR would risk injury to the players they are expecting to leave the club this summer, and both Charlie Austin and Leroy Fer have not been included in the squad to play Atalanta today.

Both players have been linked with Newcastle this summer, although Charlie Austin has been heavily favored to join the Magpies,  if only a fee can only be arranged with QPR for his signature.

Charlie Austin – not in QPR squad for today’s friendly

QPR fans have reacted to Charlie being left out of the side and here’s what Charlie put out on his twitter account to allay any fears.

There was news yesterday that Newcastle would try to seal the deal for Austin this week, but Steve McClaren said he didn’t expect anybody to be signed before the Premier League kicks off next weekend.

However, we reported on the news today that West Ham may make a move for Charlie after they lost Enner Valencia with a serious knee and ankle injury in their Europa League tie last week against Astra Giurgiu.

West Ham said it was a significant injury and it looks like the Ecuador International could be out maybe even for the rest of the year.

Former Newcastle striker Andy Carroll is also out injured again – this time with a medial ligament injury to his knee, and the big striker is not expected back until late October.

If West Ham do make a bid for Austin and it is accepted, that would presumably see Newcastle go into action to try to do the deal.

Newcastle would probably match West Ham’s bid, since the news is that Charlie wants to join Newcastle, as his first choice.

Comments welcome.

I just cannot believe we going to go into the new season with the same crap defence that has plagued our team for years now.
Lascalles has looked out of his depth and we are imo putting to much on the young shoulders of Mbemba .
Willo is a walking disaster and Taylor is not far behind.
Collo is Awol……So all in all we look all set for next Sunday’s first game against the Saints.
I will be taking my seat in the ground with worry as I feel a bad start could start another snowball of the continuation of last season

Im glad you have faith mate.Bringing in the 3 lads showed a glint of ambition. But as it stands we are way short of quality on the pitch. Our back four looks like a patched up quilt and has not made any improvements from last season.

  • 13 Slank // Aug 2, 2015 at 3:08 PM

    An anorak question, my apologies.

I’m watching the Charity Shield and wondered whether anyone else had found it difficult to follow the newly coloured ball especially in the sunny part of the pitch. Or is it just me !

Slank; agree, the new ball is terrible. It appears to be blurry and sounds flat.

Might as well put them straight in. Only way they are going to learn about the PL.

  • 29 jimiley // Aug 2, 2015 at 3:33 PM

For some, great things are expected from the same players and a few new signings. For others, a relegation fight beckons. If we “win” relegation, does anybody think Mashers will leave, or do we have to “win” 4th spot before he keeps his promise. In which case he will be at the Toon forever. I am willing to concede any position in the league as a “win”, Mike. But in the meantime I will stay away. Thanks but no thanks mate.

  • 30 doofa the loofa // Aug 2, 2015 at 3:34 PM

  • 31 jimiley // Aug 2, 2015 at 3:34 PM

    I would settle for 4th.

  • 32 JackButler // Aug 2, 2015 at 3:35 PM

Is that purely because of our back line mate?

  • 33 doofa the loofa // Aug 2, 2015 at 3:36 PM

    Big Mike is going nowhere..

  • 34 jimiley // Aug 2, 2015 at 3:37 PM

No its because the team is generally crap. And so is the manager.

  • 35 ilovetoon8788 // Aug 2, 2015 at 3:37 PM

A bad start can be disastrous for our season..

  • 36 JackButler // Aug 2, 2015 at 3:39 PM

Come on mate, it’s not that bad is it!

Our midfield is pretty decent, up front could use reinforcing but is still very capable and our manager and staff arean upgrade on Pardew and his merry bunch of dinosaurs

  • 37 doofa the loofa // Aug 2, 2015 at 3:39 PM

    Get off the blog man..

  • 38 Jack // Aug 2, 2015 at 3:39 PM

    Team vs Southampton: (4-2-3-1)

    Vuckic——De Jong——-Marveaux

  • 39 WWSBRD // Aug 2, 2015 at 3:40 PM

Not only that mate though its a big concern, Sissoko will start every match and he doesnt really fit the set up imo, the CDM spot is an issue, wingers we dont have great quality and I think we will struggle a lot in the first 10 or so games then itll be catch up for the rest of the season

  • 40 Jack // Aug 2, 2015 at 3:42 PM

    Oh and 16th.

  • 41 JackButler // Aug 2, 2015 at 3:46 PM

If and its a massive if, Tiote can stay fit and regain his form that would see the DCM issue sorted. Sissoko is a hard one to work out as he can go from ripping it up to not seeming to be interested and failing to get into a game and make any sort of impact while our wingers have plenty of pace but little else.

The problem is the entire squad needs to be overhauled and there’s no way that will be achieved in one, two, three or even four windows under Ashley, but at least if we were to build from the back we would have the right basis to move forward

  • 42 MancMag // Aug 2, 2015 at 3:46 PM

I am now 61 and have followed NUFC all of my life.
And I continue NOT TO UNDERSTAND the regular shambolic running of a club we all support so passionately and which has the opportunity to become a beacon of hope and success for the whole of the North East.
Is it really too much to expect of a club with Newcastle’s traditions, size and finances that:
    1. A sensible Mission Statement be produced (not a knee-jerk, one-off, ambiguous, panic statement from Ashley at the end of last season, when he had already alienated many of the club’s fans and thought season ticket sales were failing) to let us all understand how the club WILL be run and its intentions and hopes for the future.
    2. Proper stock is taken of the coaching and playing staff during and at the end of EVERY season, with a view to trying to produce excellent junior and senior sides that can actually compete and TRY to win something.
    3. And, as part of that process:
    (i) to build a genuine ‘development squad’ which (as the name seems to suggest) can then be DEVELOPED (by excellent, rather than mediocre youth coaches) into (a) a team which grows, improves and gains confidence together and (b) becomes something of a conveyor belt for home developed and cost-effective talent for the first team.
(ii) to create an excellent first team squad which can actually compete in the Premier League, potentially win a cup or two and to give us fans something to hope for again on a Saturday/Sunday afternoon or a midweek game.
(iii) Like KK and Sir Bobby did, to actually BUILD a first team (NOT just a collection of individuals) who all know their roles and contribute to a pattern and style of play which is successful and where there are younger back-ups, in EVERY position, to cover for the inevitable injuries which occur during a season. So that means buying or developing (i) the right replacement or back-up defenders, (ii) the right defensive and attacking midfielders (iii) the right wingers or attacking wide midfielders to provide good service for our strikers and (iv) having sufficient strikers of sufficient quality to be able to impose our style of play on the majority of other teams.
    4. But instead, season after season, we seem to try to ‘patch and mend’ by a few new signings, without there seemingly being any overall plan about how the team will play or the overall development and progress of the club.
    5. For those who haven’t already seen this, here is an article about how Southampton FC now seems to be run. I think it is an ‘eye-opener’.

Picking a name of an ex toon player as a user name is usually an indicator of a Mackem wum.

  • 44 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Aug 2, 2015 at 3:49 PM

    JB…10th or 11!

…finishing in the top 8 which is the goal this season will mean we have to over perform and certain teams will have to underperform!

Does anyone think not reaching our targets will have any repercussions?

  • 45 Mister Tuff // Aug 2, 2015 at 3:50 PM

I’m going for 11th to 14th in the league – SO FAR from what I’ve seen. Still think there will be another couple of signings. At the moment I suppose it is pure speculation.
Trying to build a whole new ethos at the club cannot be done in a couple of months -de- Pardewing and de- Carvering the side will not happen overnight either.
It was noticeable that yesterday they were trying to play everything from the back through Anita – he was constantly returning from mid-field to collect the ball.
Worried that this tactic is so obvious it would be easy to thwart. Opposition could have somebody sticking to Anita harrying him all the time – then they’ll revert to hoofball and possession lost.
Early prediction for Sunday has to be a loss to the Saints -although I hope not.

  • 46 WWSBRD // Aug 2, 2015 at 3:52 PM

For me Tiote would be a good choice for the midfield but I dont think McClaren fancies him there otherwise he would of played more during preseason, yesterday a fine example but he was no where to be seen…unless he is injured again?

The squad is in trouble because we cant shift the players we dont want anymore

  • 47 JackButler // Aug 2, 2015 at 3:52 PM

There was a report today (keep in mind it’s sunder and the BS journo’s come out in force) that the biggest business we will do this window is yet to happen.

As it stands now I think 11th or 12th is all we can hope for 8th is about thirty million pounds away, oh and a whole truck full of luck

  • 48 JackButler // Aug 2, 2015 at 3:53 PM

He is still injured mate by all accounts

  • 49 the broons // Aug 2, 2015 at 3:53 PM

i think we should definitely be aiming top 10.

Our squad is miles better than stokes! Defensively is where they better us but I keep saying it one real quality centre back brought in solves our problems.

  • 50 beermonkey // Aug 2, 2015 at 3:54 PM

    jack butler

with the euros next summer start dropping sissoko and put france place under threat I am sure he will start playing better

  • 51 colwell // Aug 2, 2015 at 3:54 PM

Saints are firing on all cylinders at the moment and due to the Europa league are further ahead in their preparation for next Sunday.

Saints have to be one of the worst teams to play first game, whilst we are slowly adapting a new style they have nearly mastered theirs. If Taylor and Willo start Mane will have a field day and Pelle is far to strong for Willo.

Hopefully the Austin rumors can be done with now and we actually sign players we need although I’m pretty certain now we have spent the money in the bank unless we sell we won’t sign any one else.

  • 52 JackButler // Aug 2, 2015 at 3:55 PM

Or he goes off in strop and demands a move away in January

  • 53 check the toastie // Aug 2, 2015 at 3:56 PM

    So difficult to predict

6th to 18th for me, could be anything this year…

  • 54 jazzyp // Aug 2, 2015 at 3:57 PM

As it stands we will do well to finish in the top half. 8th-10th would be an obvious improvement on last season, But shows how low our expectations have fallen.
The top 4 is way out of our league unless Ashley splashes masses of cash at the squad, But I think 5th-7th should be where we need to be aiming. Qualify for Europe season in season out would be a massive factor in attracting better players. Rather than languishing around relegation and hoping we can attract big players by offering players double there wages and plucking hidden gems for petty change

  • 55 Jack // Aug 2, 2015 at 3:57 PM

I personally think that Vuckic and Marveaux would shine in a team that are trying to play the way we are looking to do. I remember Vuckic’s debut, he was brilliant. Then he got injured. His left foot is insane. Marveaux vs Anzhi was where I realised his skill level, yeah he gets lost in games, but he was never given a proper run in in the squad. He has so much creativity and would be a very good choice on the left wing supplying crosses for Mitrovic. He has a great cross on him.

  • 56 Ron Knee // Aug 2, 2015 at 3:57 PM

‘Repercussions’ in what sense? Do you think Ca$hley will hold Charnley to account when we finish in the bottom ten?

  • 57 hibbit // Aug 2, 2015 at 4:02 PM

the broons…… can you explain how you think we are miles better than stoke last seasons table would suggest we are not

  • 58 WWSBRD // Aug 2, 2015 at 4:03 PM

Well hes got a lot to prove when he comes back then but it always takes him 4 or 5 games to get back on track

  • 59 check the toastie // Aug 2, 2015 at 4:03 PM

That’s why its interesting, previous years I’ve expected awful football and relegation, anything else was a nice surprise…

Better football, fewer hammerings, a few worthy victories will do me. We scored 40goals last year this year I expect.

    Mitrovic 12, De Jong10, Aarons 7, Sissoko 5, Perez 5, Winaldo 6, others 10.
55 goals, scored, less conceded, makes us 9th good season hopefully….

  • 60 WWSBRD // Aug 2, 2015 at 4:05 PM

U started on the sauce a bit early?

  • 61 JackButler // Aug 2, 2015 at 4:06 PM

He has mate, he’s got a lot to do to get back to his very best as well as he was way off it the past 12 months or so.

And I think you are right about our squad, we need to ship so many out but are we prepared to take the loss on them?

  • 62 Jack // Aug 2, 2015 at 4:08 PM

Sorry that my opinion gives you that impression, I honestly believe that they should get a fair chance in the squad. I think that they will suprise.
