Newcastle Legend Praises Two Very Good Signings

9:09 am, Sunday, August 2nd, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 169 Comments

Philippe Albert played for Newcastle in the Kevin Keegan era and was on Tyneside from 1994 through 1999 when the center-back played 109 times for the Magpies with 8 goals and he is still revered by fans at Newcastle.

Philippe is now a pundit on Belgian TV and knows all about Aleksandar Mitrovic and Chancel Mbemba after watching them a number of times over the last two years as part of his job.

Phillipe Albert today_2014

Philippe Albert today

In short he thinks Newcastle have made a great double signing of the players, who made their home debuts in the 61st minute in the narrow 1-0 defeat yesterday against Borussia Monchengladbach at St. James’ Park.

This is what the now 47 year-old said in an exclusive interview with the Sunday Sun today:

“I think Steve McClaren has made two very good signings.” “I have watched both as a TV pundit for the last few years so I know them very well from their last couple of seasons with Anderlecht.”

“They are two young players with a good mentality and are positive on the pitch.” “Newcastle fans deserve them because they will do very well.”

“If I could say something to them it would be to give 100% every game.” “If you do that even when the team lose the fans will be positive with you on Tyneside.”

“That is how Newcastle fans see the game of football.” “They want to see quality players of course, but it’s no good having quality if you don’t give 100%.”

“If you do that even when the team lose the fans will be positive with you on Tyneside.” “That is how Newcastle fans see the game of football.

“It will be positive for everybody.” “They will have to behave on and off the field too.” “If they give everything they have they won’t have a problem with anybody.”

“If Mitrovic gets the goals he will be a success because they lacked that last season.”

“In Newcastle the fans want to see the team giving their all, if you lose, then lose 3-2 or 4-3, not like last season when they were well beaten and that wasn’t the case.”

Both of our new players were stars in the Belgian League,  but they will need a little bit of time to adjust to the physical rigors of the English Premier League.

But for £21M in total they look to be excellent buys, and have been brought in to fix the problem positions for Newcastle – center-forward and center-back.

We look forward to Chancel stopping the goals and Aleksandar scoring the goals next season – starting against Southampton a week today

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

I hope people think hard before buying season tickets, there will be an awful lot of dross to watch through out the course of the season.

    Ashley Out!

Hopefully with us making our own luck ,we’ll secure EPL safety before the last game!

  • 6 cyprus // Aug 2, 2015 at 9:28 AM

Dummet should be a decent back up, never in first 11 or even 18, when we are all set. Back 4 picks itself with Colo Mbemba in the middle. Brains brawn.

Sissoko, Colback and Perez are all tops, they should be in the core 18 who will be regularly played if we want CL. Hope you are reading Steve.

Just spreading a little morning sunshine murvar 🙂

  • 8 hibbit // Aug 2, 2015 at 9:29 AM

cyprus colo heads not in newcastle long gone

  • 9 Rotonda heights // Aug 2, 2015 at 9:29 AM

That’s why if colo stays I can still see him being a very good sweeper behind MBemba and Lascelles in a back 3 with 2 overlapping and back tracking wing backs, 2 hard working midfield players and a fluent front 3 of Perez, Miitro and Aarons..

Willo and saylor are always an accident waiting to happen, ie saylor’s error yesterday which led to the goal and both of them are so slow when anyone runs at them on the deck.

Colback must be taken off set piece duty as he really, with those, and in open play doesn’t create anything. Anita is getting better and keeps things moving.

If sissoko goes we do have perez and for cisse mitro and …? Still not sold on austin at that price especially when the need for a Rutiger / Abdennour etc is so intense.

  • 10 cyprus // Aug 2, 2015 at 9:30 AM

We’ll secure EPL safety after the first game 😉

I definitely think that some players need to be a bit more diplomatic about the current status of the club.

McC has had a big job to do this summer.

Tactically Pardew was an odd one who set the team up in a very old fashioned way with a coaching set up that focussed more on fitness than style and skill.

Steve has not only had to change the culture at the club, which anyone who’s ever worked in any managerial role will know is no easy task. People don’t like change. Particularly when we have a squad that has had 5 years settled under Pardew’s ways.

We cannot expect instant results. And yes pre season has been poor but I think it will take time for McClaren to mould the team he wants.

We all know we need more players in to plug deficiencies in the team. But at the same time you cannot deny we are not stronger. Mitrovic, Gini and Mbemba have come in not as replacements but as additions therefore making us stronger.

There are clear signs of our players looking after the ball a bit more and showing better technical ability in the ball.

We do still have a leaky defence and we lack the ability to make incisions in the final third.

I think missing out on Ayew will be a real miss. He’s done well in pre season for swansea and wee are in dire need of a winger.

I am not on board with the colo out brigade but it worries me that he hasn’t featured all pre season. The same goes for tiote. I think both can play roles.

We do however need to stop playing Williamson. Saylor made some errors yesterday but even he was outclassing Willo when on the ball.

One thing we need to consider though, is that we were not in a bad position until Pardew left. While it does alarm me that we haven’t addressed the obvious weaknesses in the team (creativity and defence) we must also remember that our defence was makeshift if that for the second half with Janmaat at cb and Colback at lb.

based on what I’ve seen I’d set the team up as this.

    Janmaat Mbemba Saylor Haidara
    Anita Gini
    Moussa De Jong Aarons

Colo gone? Sorry, abroad, not following these days…

  • 14 toon kk // Aug 2, 2015 at 9:32 AM

your welcome mate, I’m sure good old Steve will have our team playing like Barca in no time.

  • 15 Rotonda heights // Aug 2, 2015 at 9:33 AM

Would be quite happy with Dunk

  • 16 hibbit // Aug 2, 2015 at 9:34 AM

rotonda 2 cb with not prem game between them if we have to i would play colo in front of them not perfect but use him to our advantage

  • 17 LGFUAD21 // Aug 2, 2015 at 9:37 AM

I don’t think Anita is getting better. He’s just finally being allowed to play his game.

He has impressed me most in pre season.

The key flaws for us I believe are.

A lack of power/creativity/goal threat on the wings. Maybe Aarons can produce but it’s a risk. And I think a winger is priority over Austin because we can’t do shhhh with another decent striker without giving them some players to work with.

Defence – don’t really need to say more.

    defensive cover in midfield.
All the tiote haters should look at our results with and without tiote in the team. He can be ugly to watch at times but it’s short sighted to just think “we conceded therefor our defenders suck” we are exposing our Cbs more than other clubs would.

Someone mentioned colo as a dm which could be a good shout. He’s comfortable enough on the ball pass it around and most importantly he has a fantastic read of the game. BUT I’m not sure he has the legs, stamina to do it.

  • 18 Jib // Aug 2, 2015 at 9:40 AM

I think Colo and Tiote were being held back for the Soton game

  • 19 Tsunki // Aug 2, 2015 at 9:40 AM

I can’t see Steve being happy with his selection availability for back four. Look who he has that’s fit. I think he will have a job on his hands with the first three months games. If he can organise them to do shut-outs, which the King never did, then I’ll be impressed.

  • 20 toon kk // Aug 2, 2015 at 9:41 AM

I wonder if Steve can see the players that shouldn’t be any where near a premier league pitch, ie Williamson and or erm half of our squad.
The club should never have been run so far down it could take several years to recover from.

  • 21 Rotonda heights // Aug 2, 2015 at 9:42 AM

Lifeguard (sorry just easier to remember)

I would suggest that after the joyless misery imposed by AP, carver, stone and woodman for the last 4 years, the more technical players we have would be very receptive to change.

Actually passing and moving and using a ball in training must be music to their ears!

We were not bottom 6 but we were in another very poor run, everton game apart, before AP left.

Also I would say the new 3 are definite starters / replacements, not mere additions.

  • 22 mickalfas // Aug 2, 2015 at 9:42 AM

Hope you’re right about Tiote, if he can get back to previous form,he’ll be a great asset ,IF!

  • 23 Magpie Season // Aug 2, 2015 at 9:45 AM

If the West Ham link to Austin has any merit, I foresee many rumours of Andy Carroll returning here.

  • 24 Magpie Season // Aug 2, 2015 at 9:47 AM

I thought Woodman was the exception out of those 4, him being a good coach.

  • 25 Jib // Aug 2, 2015 at 9:48 AM

Watching NUFCtv , Tiote seems to be fine , he’s training with the squad , not separately , and seems to be moving freely enough.

  • 26 bladeuser // Aug 2, 2015 at 9:48 AM

  • 27 toon kk // Aug 2, 2015 at 9:49 AM

We haven’t a bad first team if everyone plays to their potential, apart from our defence and lack of pace oh and creative play not to mention no game changers on the bench.

Im just feeling at bit p—d off with pre season, had last season written all over it, mainly the same player’s I suppose.
Let’s hope we see some more quality come in.

  • 28 Rotonda heights // Aug 2, 2015 at 9:49 AM

that’s why i’d play colo as sweeper in a 343 or 352. Reads it well, could bring it out and be insurance behind lascelles and mbemba while they bed in.

Some people seem to have written lascelles off already. How’s he going to get any experience if he’s not played.

We all well know willo’s and saylor’s deficiencies so why not take a chance with someone who with the right coaching could come good rather than persist with 2 serial failures who may have experience but at their age are sadly never going to improve.

  • 29 kilcline // Aug 2, 2015 at 9:50 AM

    Sell sissoko for £23m
    Sell Cissw for £7m
    Sell Colo for £3m
Sell Williamson for a bag of footballs
Get rid of riverie, obertan, Ferguson

    Matip or Rudiger for £10m
    Byram for £5m
    Behranio for £17m

Colback back up left back at best, headless chicken. Anita to lightweight for prem I would flog him too. Tiote and kemen as Dms

  • 30 Chawne // Aug 2, 2015 at 9:52 AM

I am looking forward to the season, it will be a slow process incorporating the new playstyle and moving enough players in/out to challenge the top 7 sides. So far i like what i have seen with the little time SM has had. Hopefully a few fortunate results can go our way early on, wouldn’t mind a break from the doom sayers.

  • 31 Rotonda heights // Aug 2, 2015 at 9:53 AM

    magpie season

You wouldn’t think so if you’ve seen the way krul had regressed horribly. Yesterday his distribution already seemed better.

Elliot was nealy as fat as Woodman snr and Alnwick was savagely under and unprepared.

  • 32 Tsunki // Aug 2, 2015 at 9:55 AM

it’s noticeable the difference in style from a Pardew team though. In the end we were a pretty makeshift team against BMG and they were needs to take forward, not frightened of opposing players proximity, allowed to pass it about a bit because we didn’t (wisely) knacker ourselves closing them down, which I am 100% certain we will be doing against Southampton. Also, even with Williamson in defence we had Tim rolling or tapping it out to his defence, they weren’t panicking about opposition proximity, some nice passing through them, the ball bring moved to and fro across the field ( especially tiring for the opposition) just the usual suspects with their final ball and lead footed touch at crucial moments.. ( **cough* obertan….sissoko..** cough*)… still, a lot better than watching a Carvew side.

  • 33 Rotonda heights // Aug 2, 2015 at 9:58 AM

Agree with all, except anita. still think he has a chance when used properly, which i think shteeve will.

  • 34 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Aug 2, 2015 at 10:00 AM

Yeah Krul’s distribution was a lot lot better yesterday full backs midfield getting into position to receive pass outs – have got to have been working on it – hope fully he/they don’t revert to hoofball when the season s starts.

Going to be a tough 8 opening games – could be at the bottom – got to be patient.

As for team for Sunday I think we have got to start with Perez somewhere – watching yesterday in the cameo he played his link-up with midfield, De Jong and Mitrovic was very good and has the art of drifting into spaces/dropping off players to pick the ball up. Going to be star in the future whoever he plays for

  • 35 Magpie Season // Aug 2, 2015 at 10:02 AM

Yeah Elliot did get fat. Seems like he was the one about to give birth instead of his wife last season.

It can’t have been because of Woodman though that Krul stagnated. He has not even approached his peak yet. But Woodman has been here since long time ago, when Krul was in top form & got the player of the month award.

But I think the old Manchester United goalkeeping coach, Eric Steele I think, if he were to come in as a replacement that would be a bonus.

  • 36 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Aug 2, 2015 at 10:02 AM

Don’t like the new blue and white kit – just a bloody advert for Wonga

  • 37 firebug666 // Aug 2, 2015 at 10:02 AM

After watching that display yesterday, I have little confidence in us doing anything different to last season.

We might keep the ball more, but we still do nothing with it, and I know it’s early days and two of our signings need to get up to speed, but for me this looks like another survival season.

We are still making sill mistakes at the back, and we are still giving the ball away far to much.

We do look better going forward, but we still have no end product.

We left ourselves exposed at the back a few times yesterday, and if we do that in the premiership we will get punished.

In my opinion, with this team and style of play we will finish in the bottom half of the table.

  • 38 toon kk // Aug 2, 2015 at 10:02 AM

I think Riverie could come good with a bit more game time.

  • 39 Slank // Aug 2, 2015 at 10:03 AM

That looks like a formation that McClaren could play against Southampton:

I would say that the only certainties to start are:
Krul, Janmaat, Haidara, Gini, Moussa, Aarons and Cisse.

Mbemba and Mitrovic – They are not up to speed for a competitive Premiership match but could be subs in the second half. Mitrovic could give their two tired centre backs a right run around.

Colo – If fit he could play but I think McClaren will stick with Williamson and Saylor.

Colback or Anita – I think Gini will play having had training and game time already. In the last few games it is quite obvious what Anita’s role is which he does well and is ideally suited to it.

De Jong – McClaren could surprise us and drop De Jong but bring him in as a sub in the second half. The match could start with Gini, Colback and Anita.

I quite like the idea of Pav coming back. Would be a very popular move.

  • 45 Magpie Season // Aug 2, 2015 at 10:10 AM

    In case anyone forgot,

Southampton have a Europa League qualifier just 3 days before our match. It’s an away game as well to Chelsea Juniors (Vitesse).

Hopefully we can play with a higher tempo to exploit any fatigue they may have & grab a result.

  • 46 Slank // Aug 2, 2015 at 10:14 AM

    Rotonda @ 40

I think McClaren has few options at centre back.

Colo is injured. If he isn’t he certainly is not match fit.
Dummitt is the same as Colo.
Mbemba is not match fit enough for 90 minutes.
Lascelles is a risk having had no Premiership experience.
Good and Satka are just not at the races.

  • 47 firebug666 // Aug 2, 2015 at 10:14 AM

    Magpie Season

I agree, but it’s not something that you can rely on, an in these early games in Europe managers rest some of their bigger players for the premiership games.

Still it does add to the home advantage.

  • 48 toon kk // Aug 2, 2015 at 10:15 AM

De jong has good quality and stands out, he is needed as a game starter but maybe to protect him from injury he should be used as a sub he’d make a great game changer.

  • 54 Chawne // Aug 2, 2015 at 10:24 AM

Firebug, think you are being a bit impatient. It was always going to take time to recover from Pardews reign, unless we were to buy around 8 EPL proven players but we dont have the cash for that. If we can get another 1-2 defenders in by close of window, that will give SM plenty of time to improve the defence and climb the table. We are not trying to win the league, so if we have a slow start it’s not the end of the world. Look at Crystal Palace for instance – they were in a terrible position at Christmas but finished top10. There is no instant fix for our team unfortunately

  • 55 Magpie Season // Aug 2, 2015 at 10:26 AM

True. Just saw Southampton also ahead 3-0 on aggregate & probably will rest their main players for it. So maybe it was a moot issue.

  • 56 hibbit // Aug 2, 2015 at 10:27 AM

  • 57 expatmag // Aug 2, 2015 at 10:27 AM

In my opinion, we should have enough up front with Mitrovic, Cisse and De Jong as well as attacking midfielders in Sissoko, Perez, Wijnaldum, Cabella and Riviere to chip in with enough goals.

We clearly need support in defence and whilst I feel Abdennour and Rudiger are out of our price range, the likes of Veltman and Van Dijk are not especially uf we can sell Colo to Palace and compromise with the transfer fee to Celtic for Van Dijk by offering Taylor or Williamson as part of the package and Good or Satka on loan for the season.

Individually the players you mentioned are good.

The key question is whether McClaren and his coaches can mold them into a winning team. If he can’t do it I don’t know who can. I have high hopes. Just need an experienced, commanding centre back who can lead and organise the back four.

  • 60 Jamseyd24 // Aug 2, 2015 at 10:30 AM

Cant understand why Williamson & taylor are starting before lascelles, yes he is a bit green but he wont get better sitting on the bench. Throw him in at the deep end,

For me De Jong has to start, if he is fit enough, there is room in the team for both him and Gini.

LGFUAD21 & Tsunki – Nice to see some well thought out and astute postings on here. I was at the game yesterday and saw some encouraging signs in our patterns of play and building from the back. Yes our defence is still a bit shakey but people should remember that Saylor is coming back from a long term injury and still getting up to match fitness – also Aarons didn’t do him any favours for their goal either!

sometimes you have to take a risk. you can’t keep them in cotton wool forever.

Given the record amount of goals we’ve leaked over the last 3 years are Lascelles and mbemba really going to do much worse than willo and saylor who yes have experience but not of being good competent PL standard CBs in anyone’s language

saylor’s mistake was hardly in isolation, he’s been doing it for years even when he barely plays 10 games a season but obscenely still gets a loyalty bonus!

I certainly saw promise in some areas yesterday but how we have routinely ended up with 2 duffers like ST and AW still defies belief.

Yes, I agree that at some point you have to take a risk often because there is no alternative.

I’m not sure the game against Southampton is the right time for Lascelles as the team as McClaren acknowledges is no where near the finished article. I would start off by playing Lascelles is the League Cup.

I watched a bit of Celtic last season and saw the game yesterday and Van Dyke looks very classy, almost Beckenbauerish.

He is very impressive going forward. My doubts are whether he looks good only because almost everybody else looks poor (Vuckic at Rangers for example) and I haven’t seen enough of him defending to say whether he would stand up to Premiership forwards.

  • 79 martoon // Aug 2, 2015 at 11:02 AM

The trouble with defenders is that you only remember their mistakes. Yes Saylor has made mistakes but he has also made a lot of good blocks and interceptions over the years as well. I agree we need another CB before the window closes but just trying to point out that Saylor is not as bad as some make out but you can’t deny the fact he is injury prone these days!

I suspect its a touch of the vickic about him Southampton were in need of a def and they took caulker onloan I would have thought they would have been all over van dyke if he had been up to it

but I haven’t seen enough of him really and I am no scout

  • 84 geordie157 // Aug 2, 2015 at 11:18 AM

either Rudiger, veltman, van dijk would all be good
Maybe someone like tasci who has more experience. Or be ambitious and get inigo Martinez

  • 85 Slank // Aug 2, 2015 at 11:19 AM

    hibbit @ 80

    Very true.

We really need a player from the Premiership but they are few and far between.

Although an experienced centre back from Europe would be good they would still need to get up to speed and couldn’t really hit the ground running. Colo was a prime example when he first arrived.

  • 86 beermonkey // Aug 2, 2015 at 11:20 AM

with the exception of huth and caulker has a defender moved that would improve us at a fee we could pay

Stone is a classic example of where a defender who looks really good in the Premiership starts to attract an asking price probably way beyond our means but also why leave Everton to go to Newcastle when there are other more attractive propositions.

  • 89 Rotonda heights // Aug 2, 2015 at 11:30 AM

shawlcross isn’t a ball playing CB so although way better than what we’ve got defensively, isn’t really the answer if we are really are going to get the ball down and play.

  • 90 expatmag // Aug 2, 2015 at 11:31 AM

I watched the Celtic Ross County fame last night live and paid particular attention to Van Dijk. I know the opposition wasnt the best but he was clearly head and shoulders above any other player on the pitch.

He is tall and commanding at the back, made several crucial tackles and interceptions in 1 on 1 situations without any panic and his height and aerial ability at both ends of the pitch is a big asset. For a centre half, he scored 10 goals last season.

He is more than capable of playing it out ftom the back and I can see him and Mbembe being dominant in the PL.

  • 91 beermonkey // Aug 2, 2015 at 11:31 AM

that’s why leshelles could prove to be a good buy
he has been fast tracked by the fa and has already trained with the full England squad I am really hopeful he will come good

  • 94 the broons // Aug 2, 2015 at 11:39 AM

Actually forgot all about dummett, thinking more and more about it i think we are gonna have to offload atleast one of our centre backs before we bring one in.

Even though that would be a horrendous decision, I don’t think the “team” have much tendency to go get a centre back. They are looking at more who has more resale value.

    Their conversations probably go something like this;
“mitrovic, ye na he scores upwards of 15 this season, chelsea will come in with 30 million. That’s double our money back!”

“WInjaldum, yeah hes far too good for us but he doesn’t know that yet. Give it a bit of time and Louis van gaal will spend 30+ to get him in”

Even though I was quite happy with what I saw yesterday, I have a feeling the philosphy hasn’t changed…. Ill change my attitude when i see a top notch centre back brought in.

Van Diijk is actually on the kist of defenders we have been linked with. For me he is near the bottom of the list, just for the reasons you mentioned.

Hes playing against ross county, whenever I watch Celtic in europe they struggle apart from one game i watched against inter where they were brilliant.

Having said that, if it meant we could only have him then snap him up i say. Still miles better than the shambles of what we got.

  • 104 magscar // Aug 2, 2015 at 11:45 AM

Well decided to go yesterday and like others was reasonably pleased despite the defeat.

There were positives despite the ever clear need for a new CB. Saying that it seemed to me that the coaches have been working on Williamson’s possession with him making either the usual crossfield balls or for Anita or sometimes Colback to drop and show for an easy pass for him so keeping the possession going. BM showed a much better retention and quick passing than us but without causing us loads of trouble.

Felt that we were slow in supporting Cisse in first half and he isn’t great at holding up play. Mitro however showed what he is about immediately by coming on and harassing the BM back 4 and causing consternation that Cisse hadn’t been able to manage. Good in the air and looks to be what we have been crying out for for awhile. Looking forward to more from him.

In midfield Anita worked hard closing down and keeping pressure on BM . Colback (and Taylor in defence) would have got yellows in PL for dragging back opponents ( red possibly for Taylor if last man) Star was Gini howver giving an intelligent display, unhurried and cool on ball and making great runs into box- the real deal!

Sissoko was his usual diffident self and his performance left me frustrated. Obertan also flattered to deceive but was involved in our better forward play in 1st half. Hiadara was good and bad giving the ball away or getting caught in possession – needs more work. Janmatt was steady and Williamson was OK with only one howler and Taylor hasn’t lost his mad moments. Not a defence you want to be facing PL sides. Mbemba however looks full of promise even at RB with some surging positive runs and all round good play.

Colo would be his best partner out of what we have but I am hopeful they are working on a new one. Perhaps now that McClaren has made his views known to Charnley on who he wants to retain some headway can be made. Interestingly McClaren mentions availability so perhaps targets are either involved in CL or Europa qualifying or their clubs want replacements in first. Could be we have to move some out first as well?

I have no doubt that McClaren is as aware as the rest of us that the defence needs improvement and will be letting Charnley know his views.

Not ideal before our first proper game but there is still time this month and if I am being honest when fixtures were announced I didn’t see loads of available points in August – couple of draws?

Btw was with my grandson and visited Club shop (didn’t buy anything!) but there were plenty of buying customers and also many new shirts on display in and around the ground. Did however see part of a SD sign had been torn off wall in corner of Gallowgate where the more vociferous supporters were grouped. No AO shouts as yet 🙂

we need a left sided central defender
on the right side of central defence we already have Saylor, Lascelles, Willo & Mbemba
We are covered in that area
What we need is backup for dummett and replacement for colo at LCB
If Abdennour is not possible then we should go for kongolo or Nelom
We already let mings get away
We should forget about Austin and get ourselves a top tier LCB
    Anyone but colocinni

good point mate, however am disagreeing with will die for toon army. we created 2 abseloute sitters that on another day our strikers would put away and there were couple of other chances where again another day 1 of them would probably go in.

As for our defence, how can you excuse that even a little, I agree with toonbrother, forget about austin and just spend whatever we have left in the pot on a top class centre back. We make a few chances and we still dont put them away and I think Cisse is on his way out. Goals are hard to get for NUFC. we struggled at Sheffield but we havent stuggled that much at defence.

I really want to judge our defence with mbemba playing along side any other defender even Willo. Mbemba is fast and thats wat we have been missing for quite a long time.

  • 118 magscar // Aug 2, 2015 at 12:08 PM

    The Broons

Tx and I think Mitro missed that chance because he was too anxious to repay the response he was getting from fans.

He should settle down and corners and freekicks may once again become a threat for us ( even Willo just cleared the bar in 1st half!) but delivery is something to be worked on. Similarly he should give us more presence in when defending corners and freekicks in our box. Didn’t see any of Mbemba’s supposed leaping abilities ( as at RB) but he looked unflustered on ball and with pace. Hope he doesn’t turn into another Mbwia when in PL but feel unlikely.

Good to be at a match for first time in a while instead of watching a feed. As others have said you notice movement a lot more which you miss on TV. Probably why I wasn’t a aggrieved as I might have been with defeat as there were improvements there.

Before game when warming up keepers both Krul and Darnell practiced their kicking to full back position halfway inside their half with Darnell being more accurate. Noticed as well that Wiliamson’s out ball of back to keeper has been outlawed so as to diminish the subsequent long ball out usually to the opposition. Having said that Mitro will now off better challenges if that does happen.

    Signings… intent… a feel-good factor…Hallelujah!

It looks like Mike Ashley’s few words on TV at the end of last season actually carried some truth behind them.

Aleksandar Mitrovic and Georginio Wijnaldum offer no guarantees – players can be hit or miss – so it’s vital that the Geordie public stick with them.

After such a long time without anything to crow about, I’m sure the Gallowgate is delighted with the potential quality and the sums involved. Investment into a club that was haemorrhaging talent has been sadly lacking.

This blog is full of doom mongers! steve mcclaren has hsd the job for a few weeks and there are people moaning about how we are gunna be the same as last season and how we offer no threat going forward.

The first thing a new coach will want to do is asses all his players and work on positioning and the shape of the team. Do you think steve is sat at home now worrying about cutting edge? He is more concerned about the teams fitness levels. Think about it can you remember how many times our defence completely gave up last season. Getting rid of this is more important.

The cutting edge will come it just depends on how quickly the players buy in to how steve wants them to play.

It takes 2 minutes to build a squad but ot takes time to build a team keep the faith boys, keep the faith

No matter how good a coach SM is or how good is back room staff are, you simply can’t make a silk purse out of a sows ear and our defence is simply not good enough.

Saylor will miss the majority of the season, just has he always does.
Willo gives 100% but is simply not good enough technically.
Captain Fantasic Colo is just has bad as the other two, but what’s worse with him is that he doesn’t even want to be here.

  • 138 magscar // Aug 2, 2015 at 12:57 PM

    The Broons

Am hoping that we are still trying for a PL standard CB but aren’t giving any names away as per usual. We have been linked last couple of seasons with Van Dyjk and a number on here seem to rate him (might be SPL but hasn’t been found out in CL) so might be we are chasing him.

McClaren mentions patience which whilst I can see the point still feel we (as others are fearing) are about to get caught short.

However much fans want us to go out and get a particular player it isn’t just a question of paying more money than we apparently offer as we don’t also offer what some may be after. For example even CP with increased PL money can offer good terms and LONDON – surprising how many players and their partners are attracted to a place. The NE isn’t as attractive as some to those types as has always been the case. Before KK we struggled as did other NE sides to even attract players from London!

Biggest issue for me is Colo not only Williamson as I feel he is at the heart of the lack of movement ( no pun intended given his displays recently – or was there 🙂 ) Not sure what is going on here. Don’t think he was at game yesterday and supposedly CP also interested according to press ( may be usual 2=2 =5). Is his commitment to our future the hold up as well?

  • 139 kilcline // Aug 2, 2015 at 12:58 PM

Reality is, we have in effect bought in 2 cbs in Lascelles and Mbemba. There will be no more centres backs coming in until they offload Colo and Willo.

    – New manager
    – new style of play
    – new players

Let’s face it lads, it is ridiculous to assume that the team is going to evolve overnight. SM has already indicated that they will ONLY sign players that will improve the team (read fit into the system he desires to play).
It is fine for us fans to pick players we want based on a few minutes of video clips but do you seriously believe that we are better selecting players than the folks who are doing this as a full time job?
SM now has 3 players he can say were hand selected. His job is to identify and attempt to recruit more that fit his game plan, whilst in the meantime get the most out of what he has and designing play arround that.
I suspect player morale was so low last year – as with SM I think we have to give ALL players the chance and see if how they work in the new system and reserve judgement.
At least there is a financial path forward now so I am hopeful for the future.

  • 153 magscar // Aug 2, 2015 at 1:34 PM

    Keith in France

Is Austin, coming up to his last year of contract, worth QPR’s asking price though. We aren’t the only club apparently thinking as much.

As someone said earlier on previous thread transfers work on supply and demand so there is the obvious risk in “playing who blinks first”.

Another club (or our) demand increases then suddenly £15M is worth paying if not a bargain. The longer a no sale goes on though then QPR ( despite their proclaimed “well we’ll keep him” ) will be desperate to unload. They clearly need to maximise their income and once he is into the last year and available for nothing come January on a deal for next summer they lose heavily unless he signs a new contract. Reports seem to suggest that even he feels he is being overpriced and he wants a move so would he sign a new deal? – unlikely as things stand.

It appears that we and West Ham are possibly the only front runners although Leicester may come back in if price was right and they are somehow the only PL side showing real interest. Not sure if West Ham are truly interested even with latest injury scare without unloading Carroll? Villa were the biggest threat but noticeably have used Benteke money differently than many were expecting.

Not sure given lack of any positive signs from club that we are definitely still on his track but then wouldn’t be surprised as seeming brinkmanship involved has the hallmarks of our type of signings ( whether we end up successful or not).

I have Villa down for relegation.

If Hull had won on the last day Villa would now be in the fizzy pop league. They have lost some key players. So far we haven’t. Also I don’t rate their manager.

Southampton have reportedly put in an £8m bid for Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk.

According to the Scottish Sun, Saints boss Ronald Koeman is keen on the 24-year-old and thinks £8m is a fair price.

This is from Sky Sports website

Still not 100% convinced on getting a SPL defender but a lot of my mates who support Celtic were saying we would be better getting that Denayer from City who they had on loan such a beast and would probably be cheaper than Van Dijk

If we sign those players, we’ll finish in the top 17.

    Lee Charnley

Seems a bit strange bidding for Van Dijk when they have just taken Caulker on loan

The Chilean midfielder Leicester agreed a fee for would prefer bayern levekeusen however you spell it as a bigger club. He looks very creative and a spot kick talent. Any chance we can nip in for him.

Were always 4/5 players short from having a decent team. We’ve never had 2 top class centre backs. Albert, Woodgate, coloccini and possibly Alain goma are the best centre backs that we’ve had in the last 20 years. Players like bramble, Aaron Hughes and andy o brien were just not good enough. Even when we had good players on paper, we still got relegated. Habib beye was a good player for us

Teams just have to play 4-3-3 against us and that’s it, we’ve lost. Fearing the worst this season. Can see man Utd being in a relegation battle after losing di Maria and falcao
