Lee Bowyer joined Newcastle as a free agent in July, 2003 when Sir Bobby Robson was manager and Lee had an extremely successful spell at the then dominant Leeds United, whom he joined when he was 19 years old.
Lee left Newcastle three years later and joined West Ham after playing 98 times for the Magpies with 11 goals.
Lee Bowyer – when at Newcastle
Lee has been on talkSPORT talking about Newcastle target Charlie Austin, and Lee made no secret of the fact he thought that Newcastle would be a better destination for the striker than West Ham – and Lee played for both clubs.
This is what Lee Bowyer said:
“I think he would be better suited up in Newcastle,” “West Ham have got a couple of forwards already. They have got big Andy Carroll, they have got Diafra Sakho who scored a few goals last season.
“Newcastle I can’t think of any of their strikers but Papiss Cisse and he wants to leave. Austin would be loved up at Newcastle. They are great fans and he should hit the ground running if he decides to go there.”
Papiss Cisse has said many times that he wants to stay at Newcastle, but it’s thought that if Charlie is signed we will have brought in Aleksandar Mitrovic and Charlie Austin this summer, and Papiss will very likely be sold.
The 26 year-old English striker scored 18 league goals in just 35 Premier League appearances last season for QPR in his only season in England’s top flight.
Charlie is expected to join Newcastle, assuming the Magpies and QPR can agree a fee for the player.
That may go down to the last day of the transfer window.
