Huge Crowd At St. James Park For Open Day

2:57 pm, Tuesday, August 4th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 25 Comments

Newcastle United are giving an open training day at St James’ Park today, but would you believe it over 15,000 fans turned up to watch the lads and to see our three new signings Gini Wijnaldum, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Chancel Mbemba. That’s just 5,000 less than the crowd at our game against Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday – unbelievable.

There’s not many clubs where fans would turn out in those numbers – and there ‘s some optimism in the Geordie ranks at the moment – but we still need at least three players brought in this month and it will then have been a good transfer window.

Newcastle United trained in front of their fans today and it seems the biggest cheer went up when Mitrovic scored his first goal at the stadium, even if it was just in practice.

Unfortunately Aleksandar had a great chance to score with four minutes to go in Saturday’s game  against the German side but he hit the bar from about eight yards out – anyway this lad is going to score some goals for us this season.

It’s great to have these open days when the kids are out of school, and they can get to see what the lads do in training – a great idea by the club.

Here are some photos of the open training today.

the biggest gate of the season till they face soton

Looks like we have brought 3 good players in – dont think its enough to callenge for anything but mid-table comfort – an improvement on last season for sure.

If we are not getting the additional strengthening of the back four we need – hopefully they will rectify it in January – we have been saying that for 3 years though!!

Ok so I’ve predictions from me, Chancel, jayphoto, Jack, Papiss…, Corkypants, Yorkshire Magpie, Dok & Noel Worst – have I missed anybody?
Dok & Noel have no signings in/out predictions and Papiss no prediction for no of goals scored by his top scorer!
Once more if you are entering the predictions please put my name in the posting so I can find it easily!

martoon…you have the league prediction from me(10-11), but not for the cups!

  • 6 Our Toon // Aug 4, 2015 at 3:16 PM

3 quality signings in but again seems as though the wool has been pulled over people’s eyes. This is the bare minimum requirement and as always under Ashley so far we have done the bare minimum to ensure safety. Has anything truly changed?

Interesting opinions on Obertan, could he be like a new signing?

  • 9 OneAlanShearer // Aug 4, 2015 at 3:21 PM

Nothing has changed. Expect outgoings next. No point signing the 3 players needed…that would be what an ambitious club would do.

  • 10 Jack // Aug 4, 2015 at 3:21 PM

I think top ten is too soon, we only just avoided relegation last season. That’s why I predicted 15th. Our new signings still need to adapt, the players need to adapt to McClaren’s philosophy. Have a good feeling about the season after though.

Our Toon…I have raised the same question before!

…there’s some new coaches in place but I am still not convinced we are doing things differently.

The pre-season has been a huge let down to me. We have signed three good players, but we all knew we had to sign players (we have just hardly signed enough)

    That’s why I predict a 10-11 finish.

Glad Remy Cabella is back in training ahead of schedule. Hoping he can push on this season with proper coaching and significantly more intelligent players with him in the final third.

I agree this. This 3 signings was the bare minimum required to stay clear of relegation battle. That’s what we have done. This squad is still a 12-15th team.

I’m still not convinced this is a top 10 side. Our defence…is abysmal.

Nufc783 – cheers for the description of the practice sesh, sounds encouraging from the new quarters, same old same old from the usual suspects. Bit sad about Abeid I think he definitely had his career hampered here for one reason or another. Tried to wangle a day off for this but no go. 🙁

Credit to the club for bringing some joy to the kid ( and bigger kids 🙂 ). Know that we have other things to concern us but that shouldn’t detract from a job apparently well done.

Having already seen the Chronicle article and the comments section I despair at the inability /unwillingness of the majority of regular posters there to lighten up and see some positivity. Begin to wonder if they aren’t Mackem WUM’s except they dominate that forum with their bile. I cannot understand why they bother reading the Chronicle as it aggravates most of them. Makes on here positively cosy.

my predictions are solely based on us having further transactions in January. Probably over optimistic, but hey…I’m a TOON fan.
Also is the 3 window rebuild plan, three windows or 3 summers?

  • 20 martoon // Aug 4, 2015 at 3:56 PM

For the love of god – MY NAME not your name so I can just search for martoon in the posts.
Jesper Have you made a full list? because I didn’t see it!

  • 21 crammymag1 // Aug 4, 2015 at 4:25 PM

Doesnt matter if we had lionel messi upfront when you have Mike bloody Williamson at the back. Please god just play ANYONE rather than this guy who has unbelievably played 160+ games for us!!

  • 23 Malta Mag // Aug 4, 2015 at 5:26 PM

I really despair at some of the tossers on here. The club is finally moving forward so get behind the club and leave the past in the past where it belongs. Get a life you moaning “barstools” and try being positive!!

  • 24 crammymag1 // Aug 4, 2015 at 5:40 PM

Im very positive in terms of the coaching staff and new players as well as a hell of a lot of our players but you are over optimistic if you think playing steven “zero footballing brain” Taylor and Mike williamson who is comfortably Lower championship standard in defence will get us anywhere

  • 25 mactoon // Aug 4, 2015 at 6:12 PM

Can you believe what the new players thought about the amount of fans wo came to see them train?

Good PR move and a positive in my opinion
