McClaren Wants To Build Team Around This Specimen Of A Man

9:01 pm, Tuesday, August 4th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 55 Comments

Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren spent an hour on BBS Radio Newcastle taking call form fans – a thing that were popular when Sir Bobby Robson managed the club, and one of the things that came out of that was that he has told Lee Charnley that Newcastle must keep Moussa Sissoko.

It also seems that Moussa is more than happy these days although we keep seeing ridiculous reports from the north-west about whether Liverpool or Manchester City will be the ones who sign Sissoko this month.

But hopefully Newcastle have found out that even getting foo money for your best players does nothing for the team on the pitch and we need to keep our best players and it will help that Mike Ashley has said Newcastle want to win something now.

This is some of Steve has said in the wide-ranging topics that came up:

“We can’t lose Moussa, I know there’s a lot of interest but he’s under contract,” “On my first day he walked into my office, what a specimen of a man.”

“An absolute presence and a great manner. Very professional and low maintenance. I’ve said to Lee Charnley, ‘wow, we’ve got to keep this guy’. I want to build a team around him.”

We’ve got to admit that Moussa is kind of well built – like a tank in fact – and when he’s running with the ball straight at you on the pitch – it must be quite terrifying.

We hope it’s quite terrifying.

🙂

Moussa would do well to stay at Newcastle and with the coach obviously a huge admirer of the midfielder, Moussa is one player who should  do well for us next season.

He was always a starter under Alan Pardew, and it looks like nothing will change under Steve McClaren.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

The mighty bournemouth has a better manager than nufc..if sissoko comes to bournemouth he will win the player of the year award in no time

  • 6 Bambams // Aug 4, 2015 at 9:10 PM

If we hit the ground running. Win our majority of home games. Get awarded a few penalties. ….
    Stay reasonably injury free….

    And

Sign another CB ~ I can see top 7 is a possibility.
But we could still struggle at the back and an injury to Mitrovic. …Well we could well be bottom 7

I am hopeful we will push on and even if we don’t get CB now then January we must.

    They suggested three transfer windows

  • 7 SuperShearer // Aug 4, 2015 at 9:13 PM

People linking us with Danny Rose….. Seriously? Do you follow football? He’s being linked with Chelsea for £15 million, he’s a starter for Spurs, English and capped = WAAAAAAY outside of our reach in every way.

I take it that’s you’re realist prediction then tsunki 😛

Iv no doubt Sissoko probably would be bournemouth player of the year

  • 10 will die for the toon army // Aug 4, 2015 at 9:23 PM

A team around Sissoko really. Fans and supporters we are no longer the old NUFC. We have to do alot to attract top players.

    Bournemouth FC

If Moussa comes to Bournemouth he’ll be on his holidays! haha

  • 12 Big Pappa Cissé // Aug 4, 2015 at 9:25 PM

Well after hearing McLaren on BBC Newcastle I think its safe to assume Sissoko is the first name on the team sheet.

Also Wijnaldum & De Jong probably won’t start together as he said having them both in the team is more of a plan b which is a shame IMO .

Pretty much guarantee we will line up :

    ————Anita————–Colback——————
    –Sissoko———Wijnaldum——–Aarons/Perez–
    ———————-Mitrovic—————————-

    Against Southampton.

Quality player. Watch him blossom this year. Needs to be more consistent, but is definitely one of our most capable players. He is a fine specimen, Steve – good spot! We’ve got three more players to build around now. It’s better.

Love how fans of other teams come on this blog to belittle the very team they’ve taken an interest in commenting on. Complete idiots these people, I will never go to a blog of another team to waste my time of commenting!!

    Supershearer

Out of our reach? Are you kidding; he ain’t freakin Marcello man! Some people need to start talking us up a bit instead of always talking us down!

  • 22 Toony Poony // Aug 4, 2015 at 9:37 PM

Wouldn’t be sad to see the big man go… he was great at the start of the season, but was so frustrating to watch him totally give up once the ‘best manager in the league’ JC took over.
We are strong in the CM position where I don’t see him playing, he just gives it away too easily in the middle, and he isn’t a natural winger. He is obviously an absolute beast but even he doesn’t seem to know his position. I’d rather see Perez and Aarons make the wing forward positions their own with Mitrovic through the middle feeding off their balls in.

  • 23 geordiesteve520 // Aug 4, 2015 at 9:38 PM

Signs point to him being played in the Viera role we all thought he should be in initially

  • 24 toonicle // Aug 4, 2015 at 9:40 PM

If we’re to build a team around him then someone has to figure out what his best position actually is…. Moving him around the pitch like last year hasn’t worked at all. CM, DM, Wide right? I can’t figure it out, one day he’s great and the next looks lost

  • 25 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Aug 4, 2015 at 9:44 PM

A lot of it comes down to attitude with Sissoko if he can be bothered and we are looking to play quick 1 – 2s with high pressing he will get lots of space in the wide areas as it tends to get congested in the middle with this type of system

He will get plenty opportunities one on one with fullbacks if he is in the mood he should be destroying near enough every full back in a race he was recorded as the fastest player in the league last season !!!

Needs to get in the box more and also look up more when he has the ball

Only one problem with Moussa taking the Vera role; he cat tackle and he can’t pass a ball very well! But when he goes on a run he’s awesome and I love him!

  • 29 Moonraker15 // Aug 4, 2015 at 9:46 PM

    * Viera

  • 30 Big Pappa Cissé // Aug 4, 2015 at 9:48 PM

I would much rather De Jong or Wijnaldum in the middle over Sissoko .

Yes he is a phenomenal athlete, but he often freezes in front of goal and lacks the technical ability of someone like Viera .

For me he is best on the right wing .

  • 31 Moonraker15 // Aug 4, 2015 at 9:49 PM

@Moonraker – it’s called reality. Danny Rose is out of our reach for many reasons, the key one being what Spurs value him at. Or perhaps I’ve been following a team under a different to the one you’ve been following. I envy you if that’s the case.

He is worth 7.5 max and will wipe the floor with Haidara. Don’t think he has England caps either for senior squad but could be wrong? I know he has under 21 caps.

  • 46 martoon // Aug 4, 2015 at 10:17 PM

Cyprus and anybody else – you need to predict:
    Final position in league
    Number of points in league
    League Cup round
    FA Cup round
Number of 1st team signings this season
Number of 1st team leaving this season
    Top goal scorer
Number of goals for top goal scorer

and please put my name (martoon) in your prediction post so I can find it easily

  • 53 blacksmith // Aug 4, 2015 at 11:37 PM

I don’t like Sissoko being played wide. I think we haven’t seen the best from him when he has been played in that position.

Sissoko is an energetic athletic box to box midfielder. I see him in the middle of the park with a holding midfielder like Colback/Anita/Tiote and a technical/creative midfielder like Wijnaldum/De Jong.

I would prefer to see Wijnaldum wide right if necessary as his touch and technical abilities make him a better fit there. I prefer both in the middle ideally with a dedicated right winger terrorizing fullbacks.

I like to see players squad numbers represent their positions where possible and think Anita #5, Sissoko #8 and Wijnaldum #7 is a better fit.

  • 54 peterharper // Aug 5, 2015 at 3:14 PM

    Toony Poony.
You had better stick to womens football.
Let Sissoko go?…..some people just do not recognise a class footballer when they see one.
But you are not alone. Ed Harrison and Lee Ryder are members of your club
It is called the “Clueless Club”

  • 55 blacksmith // Aug 5, 2015 at 4:59 PM

I’m not surprised McClaren would want to build around Sissoko. He’s can be our midfield engine. The level of pace and power he possesses is somewhat rare.

I’m a bit disappointed that his technical game hasn’t improved much in his 2 and a half seasons at Newcastle. He is almost 26. Not such a young talent anymore. He should have cemented his place as our midfield general already. Perhaps this coming season.
