McClaren On International Midfielder – I Want Him Fit And Playing

10:00 pm, Wednesday, August 5th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 15 Comments

Steve McClaren talked about most things in the hour he fielded questions from fans on the Total Sport program on BBC Radio Newcastle last night at 6:00 pm local time.

And we were a little taken aback when he talked about Cheick Tiote who has hardly been seen in pre-season, and we had assumed he would be one of the players Newcastle would sell before the month is out.

But not according to the head coach, who said this when Tiote’s name was mentioned last night:

“I know Cheicky very well.” “I want him fit and playing.”  “I’ve seen him here and he had two great seasons.”

“I just remember one game against Man United and he was absolutely brilliant and that’s what he’s capable of doing.”

“We have to get him fit.”

Cheick played only 12 games for us last season and  he picked up a (slight) knee injury when he played for Ivory Coast at the African Cup of Nations in January/February and never played again for Newcastle in that dismal second half of the get the best out of the Ivorian.

Cheick still has two years left on his contract at Newcastle, and from what Steve has said you would think the 29 year-old will still be with us come September.

He has been a little unsettled over the last year or two at Newcastle,  but things are a lot more settled now with Steve McClaren and the new coaching team in place – and they can get the best out of the Ivorian.

Steve McClaren coached Tiote for two seasons in Holland for FC Twente and  they won the Dutch Championship for the first time in 2010.

After that Cheick signed for us for around £3.5M, after Chief Scout Graham Carr had been scouting him for a good few years..

Tiote is an experienced player who keeps picking up too many of those yellow cards – but he could still do a job for us next season.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

I hope mcclaren can get tiote back to his best, him and sissoko in midfield, I wouldn’t like to see those two running towards me that’s for sure.

    Ha ha ha

so after hearing steve mc on the radio he is also as confused as us, as to sissokos position. for me he has to play in the centre not deep lying or defensive mid or attacking mid just cm box to box type. he doesnt have the final ball to play out wide for me.

From last topic – no problem welshgeordie9 but feel free to make a serious prediction – all welcome 🙂

Lets face it, if we were looking to sell, this is not a bad line to go down, advertising his availability would just lower any potential fee.

And if nobody comes in for him, a little mention of his former glories, express that he has a future here etc will help keep him motivated for this season so we can at least get to see him do well for us – hopefully

I’m pretty sure Tite will go…don’t see where he fits into the team now due to SM’s seeming preference for Anita. Tiote won’t want to hang around on the subs bench so after 3 games of not starting I think we’ll get offers for him and he’ll go.

Same goes for Cisse…and Sissoko will be sold because of the money being touted around for him and Ashley won’t be able to resist the £15 million profit. We’ll buy a cheap winger and a CB with the proceeds

I think SM sees winjy as Sissoko’s replacement anyway and we have Colback and Anita who can play Tiote’s role

Tiote could stay I think. He has been injured so SM hasn’t had a decent look at him. Him and Cisse could be on their way out though due to their age and to recoup what they can.

Sissoko is the money maker this window though and I’d be surprised if he stays. If the offer is right and the team can sort him out first team football regularly im sure he would jump. He can’t be happy with NUFC at present and the lack of incomings. These 3 latest signings could all be too late. Im sure he thinks we are making him look bad. He has a point if he does, the investment has been poor and he has seen Cabaye and Debuchy leave for so called pastures new. They got their big wages though and that’s what it is all about for me with using us as a stepping stone.

Sissoko’s wide play suits setting up CM, he’S quite intelligent at picking out midfielders arriving late into the box or to the edge of the box. He set Cabaye up with countless chances. After Cabs left we didn’t have anyone arriving in those positions. Expect him and Wijnaldum to link quite well

I agree on Wijnaldum being brought in as Sissoko’s replacement eventually.

I also think Anita was brought in as Cabaye’s because they knew he was outbound once the vaule of him had been met.

For me, they are just waiting on their value of Sissoko being met then he is off.

Just doesn’t fit into the team at all for me. Sissoko, Colback, Anita plus Bigi should start getting some first team games in the cups.

  • 14 HarriboNo9 // Aug 6, 2015 at 5:21 AM

Why are people saying mclaren prefers Anita ???? Makes me so angry when people just assume. Of course he has played Anita more and in tiotes role as tiote has been injured! If he wasn’t injured Anita would of been benched! You can’t assume anything until we have a fully fit squad to chose from then you can say who mclaren prefers! Can someone who has said he prefers Anita explain to me why ? Don’t say because he’s played him he’s only played him because tiote has been injured!

Tiote is still our only and best DM. We are much harder to break down with him cos other sides know he’s a nutcase
