I think MA meant what he said about not getting involved how SM manage his team. If SM thinks he can make these players play better then he should be given a chance.
Probably more transfer activities in January.

How people can be convinced Ashley has kept him promise is beyond me. The season hasn’t even started yet. We still haven’t sufficiently improved out back line. There is still plenty of time to sell players and not replace them.

Is 3 young non-EPL, potential profit-making signings and a new management team really enough have some convinced we are on the road to the Champions League?!

Those who think so must be so gullible, hopeful and impatient.

Wait and see what happens before making such ridiculous assumptions.

  • 3 magpiesi // Aug 5, 2015 at 9:14 AM

Smc was a good listen on Bbc newcastle last night the way he talked and what has been seen in pre season I think he will start 4123 formation.
Lb-Haidara just because he hasn’t seen Dummet yet just back training.
Rw-Sissoko wants to use him in final third.
Lw-Obertan as he said Arrons exciting but will need to learn his role.

He was talking about playing a style to get a foot hold of the game first then later on change it when needing a goal etc which he said he did against Gladbach when he put De jong up behind Mitrovic.

He said hasn’t seen all the players yet but give him 10 games then he will know what he has.

So we are on the right track with signings, but a lot more needs to be done if were going to challenge for eighth spot and have a cup run.

For me…. So far we have an ass bolted to the cart instead of the horse, it seems Charnley is pulling it himself, but is tiring now.

Great signings so far, but we are still in desperate need of quality at the back to go with Mbemba.

As for our saviour Ashley, he is nothing more than a parasite he will sanction only what is needed to protect his investment in SD through advertising and merchandising nothing more.

The changes in staff is excellent, the changes in playing squad is only half done (sounds familiar). I still think we are here to survive in the premiership, nothing more.

  • 5 sparky55 // Aug 5, 2015 at 9:21 AM

    expat (ftom last string)

Winjy is Sissoko’s replacement, Mitrovic is Cisse’s replacement, Mbemba is Colo’s replacement and Anita is Tiote’s replacement.

I think they’ll all or at least three will go this window

  • 6 overtheline // Aug 5, 2015 at 9:23 AM

Only half the wall has been painted and I’m not going to judge Ashley’s conversion on the road to relegation until we strengthen the team and not simply play a zero sum game.
It is almost unanimous among Toon supporters we need to build from the back and one decentt CB doesn’t make our sieve of a defence any less leaky. At least anopthre CB is needed, plus a fast winger with an end product who can play both sides.

The jury isn’t even out on Ashley – as half the evidence is missing.

  • 7 Toonfan8 // Aug 5, 2015 at 9:24 AM

I picked my fantasy premier league team today and here it is:
    my team for sunday:
    Darlow,S.Taylor,Lascelles,Tiote,De Jong,Aarons,Cisse
even bench looks pretty strong with Willo,Obertan,Gouffran,Abeid dont make it there….Cabella,Riviere,Marveaux,Dummet injured…

  • 8 Toonfan8 // Aug 5, 2015 at 9:27 AM

if look at the picture of our squad we should buy one strong CB,RB cover…it should be enough for this window…maybee one quick winger forward Berahino/Rolan/N´Jie

  • 9 Toonfan8 // Aug 5, 2015 at 9:27 AM

and sell Gouffran,Willo,Marveaux to free up wage bill…

  • 10 toonincheek // Aug 5, 2015 at 9:37 AM

I tend to look on the positive side.
    Three signings that look excellent
When was the last time 3 out of 3 signings
proved to be as good as we expected/hoped?

    Until now 🙂

  • 11 John Tudor // Aug 5, 2015 at 9:48 AM

are they for the here and now or the future we need proven pl players now

  • 12 Toonfan8 // Aug 5, 2015 at 10:01 AM

what about young Albert Rusnak instead of Jesse Lingaard, came through City academy and now plays for Groningen in Dutch league…AM or either wing, set pieces specialist, will be star one day for sure…

  • 13 Our Toon // Aug 5, 2015 at 10:04 AM

I said last night that we have done the absolute bare minimum in this window. These signings were needed amd have been needed for at least 2 windows. It seems nothing has changed apart from the mouths we hear the lies from. The 3 signed will have resale value but more importantly we are still well short at RB cover, LB, CB, DM, winger, striker.

Don’t expect them all to come in now but at least 2 more without any 1st teamers leaving. A CB, RB cover and Winger are desperately needed now!!

  • 14 kimbo // Aug 5, 2015 at 10:05 AM

Just listened to interview and what sticks out is SMc does not think we can get into top 8 so we are looking to avoid relegation only as our main target. If he thinks after the 1st 10 games he will know better, then do not be surprised that we will be bottom with 3 points or less.

  • 15 Our Toon // Aug 5, 2015 at 10:05 AM

Sorry 3 more rather than 2

  • 16 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Aug 5, 2015 at 10:07 AM

  • 17 will die for the toon army // Aug 5, 2015 at 10:14 AM

Signing a CB all depends on how Colo is going to perform. He is Captain and he will always b on that Pitch so next to him is Mbemba with wat I saw and heard he is a good player. With back up u have Willo Taylor and Lascelles. May b Durmett if the worse goes to the worst so Mcclaren sees like we r ok with CB.

Its the RB am not convinced coz Bigi hasn’t impressed there. At all as back up. Anita ok he can play there.

With way we r going to line up Abeid still has a future at NUFC he jst has to fight for it. De Jong and Wijnaldum are taken as No. 10s so they have to fight for that position.

For Wingers we are ok with Sissoko having Perez and Oberttan as back up. Then Cabella having Aarons and Goufrann as back up is ok.

Forwards we might look ok but wen injuries hit then failure. Coz with our formation we need 3 strikers. Chelsea Manure Assnal Liverpool play the same formation and have 3. Mitrovic, Cisse and Rivere is ok. Thats 42 goals btn them. Mitrovic (28) Cisse (11) and Rivere (3). That looks ok. Austin coming looks a crowd.

  • 18 Widowmaker // Aug 5, 2015 at 10:15 AM

So far so good transfer wise.

But I think SMC needs to sell either Williamson or Taylor and get another experienced CB. While I appreciate what they have done for the club, I think it’s time to fresh things up for all parties.

I think we should give Obertan a final chance, especially now he has a more old schooled CF to aim for.

Otherwise, I think we are okay, just hope the underperformed players will do better this season.

  • 19 mindshaft // Aug 5, 2015 at 10:17 AM

Decent interview – talks sense, talks as a team rather than the I am that Pards and Craver loved so much

  • 20 Take a Chancel on me // Aug 5, 2015 at 10:17 AM

Jesper are you doing Eurovision?? lol

    I still think we’ll beat soton 2-1

  • 21 will die for the toon army // Aug 5, 2015 at 10:23 AM

If every one is fit motivated and on form. This team is not bad. According to Mcca’s words:
Darlow, Taylor, Cheick, De Jong, Aarons, Perez, Cisse.

  • 22 will die for the toon army // Aug 5, 2015 at 10:26 AM

Experience CB u already have taylor and Willo have 6 yrs EPL experience. Poor and injury prone but experienced.

  • 23 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Aug 5, 2015 at 10:28 AM

TFL…I just thought that was funny 😀

  • 24 Jamseyd24 // Aug 5, 2015 at 10:29 AM

    Will Die,

good team with one exception, you said fit and on for, to me a fit and on for Tiote would walk into the team. i think its something we have missed recently.

  • 25 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Aug 5, 2015 at 10:30 AM

TFL…the first game is really a 50-50 in my book. They always are!

…but our pre-season has been close to a disaster so I fear we are in for a tough 8 games…really tough (especially if these three signings will be it)

  • 26 Jamseyd24 // Aug 5, 2015 at 10:33 AM

    ………………………………….De Jong…………………………

  • 27 will die for the toon army // Aug 5, 2015 at 10:34 AM

I dont start with Tiote because I dont think he can start up play like Anita and Fast enough to cover like Anita. Anita is very hardworking and good on the ball that might not favour Cheick.

  • 28 will die for the toon army // Aug 5, 2015 at 10:37 AM

Simpson said they are creating competition for places and Mcclaren said De Jong and Wijanldum playing is like a Plan B. So I think Wijanldum and De Jong are fighting for e No. 10 position one has to start or e other but not both.

  • 29 Jamseyd24 // Aug 5, 2015 at 10:42 AM

    Will Die,

I totally agree but I personally think its a big loss not having them both on the pitch. maybe in a home game were we are confident we will be on the front foot I would like to see them both play.

  • 30 Our Toon // Aug 5, 2015 at 10:46 AM

    Will die for toon

On paper it looks decent, a few problems though in that side.

Cabella isn’t a winger, he prefers no 10 role so weak link on left. Prefer Aarons but is he fit enough?

Dummett is championship standard at best, Haidara isn’t much better but I’d say bottom half of prem standard, between them they can’t even manage an entire season fit. Leaving us with Ferguson….less said about him the better!!

Colo is finished and if we get an injury to Mbemba or colo the back ups are Willo and Saylor. Janmaat gets injured we have no one to cover him.

We desperately need an enforcer in midfield both Colback and Anita aren’t ball winners, with the way we play as a team it’s important to give the back 4 as much protection as possible. Colback is to busy chasing the ball from 1 player to another, leaving huge gaping holes for the opposing team to attack in midfield. Anita isn’t a tough tackler but he’s good on the ball and keeps it simple, prefer to have him as back up though. Would prefer Wij alongside a ball winner and SDJ in no 10 role

Not convinced with Sissoko as a Right Winger, the lad is very hit and miss but he’s don’t ok there previously, his back up is obertan who is utterly shite and useless. Mitrovic likes to head the ball and obertan can’t cross above 2 inches. As fergie said the lad has a mentality issue and gets nervous. Perez can do a job out there

Mitrovic and Cisse are good options, not keen at all on the french heskey, Perez can do a job upfront

  • 31 jimmysmith // Aug 5, 2015 at 10:46 AM

Jamsey, your team reminds of Stuart Pearce picking the Forest team with his wife for his first match in charge, and both agreeing they had come up with a very strong side, before realising they 12 players in the line up. Shame.

  • 32 Jamseyd24 // Aug 5, 2015 at 10:52 AM

Jimmy, well spotted was meant to take Cloback out of the original team, PSB
    …………………….De Jong…………………………

  • 33 Our Toon // Aug 5, 2015 at 10:56 AM

Jan, Mbemba, Colo/new CB, Haidara/new LB

    Tiote/new DM, Wij

    Sissoko/new winger, SDJ, Aarons

  • 34 will die for the toon army // Aug 5, 2015 at 10:57 AM

    Our Toon

I see ur point but I wont judge these players according to Pardew and Carver. I will ses how they will perform at Soton and will know if they r done or not.

These players really played well some matches last season against very good teams. Like Chelski Liverfool Everton Manure Arsenal Spurs. We really dominated those games.

Colo is not done and I still believe he is our best defender. Anita might not b a tackler but he is ahhard worker so is Colback.

Durmett isnt as bad as u define him and Haidara is good back up for him.

Don’t know what’s the more far fetched,Mitrovic scoring 28 in his first season ,hope so but can’t see it,or Riviere getting 3 ,get real man!

  • 36 Our Toon // Aug 5, 2015 at 10:58 AM

Surprised how a new manager coming in can get everyone to change opinions on Anita. He’ll still get outbattled, out muscled, out fought. There hasn’t been any issues with his ability on the ball though!!

  • 37 will die for the toon army // Aug 5, 2015 at 11:00 AM

    Our Toon

I don’t want us to look too much into injuries. Chelsea have been around without injuries and look ok. But injuries hit every team looks like sh&t even Chelsea does.

  • 38 will die for the toon army // Aug 5, 2015 at 11:02 AM

I was showing stats from last season. Showing we might b ok at Forward position. No one knowsthis season. We are all hoping.

  • 39 Our Toon // Aug 5, 2015 at 11:05 AM

    Will die for toon

Fair enough mate, don’t forget willo, Obertan, Gouffran, Vuckic etc all played under pardew and carver with the latter being the exception….does this mean they are also get a chance to prove themselves under a new method of football? Or does this only apply to a select few?

My opinion is you can polish a turd as much as you like, the fact remains it’s still a turd.

Anita and Colback work hard agreed on that but what we need is someone to sit and protect plug the gap between midfield and defence not 2 lads running off chasing players leaving huge gaps. The amount of goals we’ve conceded to midfielders in ore season should be a good indication of this

  • 40 mickalfas // Aug 5, 2015 at 11:06 AM

    Will die
You could be right if we get the assists sorted, wingers who can cross the ball
Everyone can see it apart from the club
Can’t even talk about the defence
SM said it himself, problems in both boxes, needs sorting now

  • 41 Our Toon // Aug 5, 2015 at 11:08 AM

    Will die for toon

Injuries will happen though so the squad needs to be strong not just the starting XI. You mentioned Chelsea but they have better back up players to our starting players. You also have to look at injury records, I’d be surprised if we put out our strongest squad for 3 consecutive games without having any injuries or suspensions

  • 42 Our Toon // Aug 5, 2015 at 11:11 AM

In the modern day game Full backs are like wingers, Janmaat being the prime example for us on the right, I’m not sure on this bit I believe both dummett and Haidara didn’t register an assist between them from the left side though, also think they may have been the only full back pairing not to get assists in all English divisions

  • 43 mickalfas // Aug 5, 2015 at 11:12 AM

    Our toon
Good point, its exactly the problem,we have no depth at the front or back
Hoping for no injuries at NUFC is wishful thinking at best
Saylor will be lucky to get through August

jamseyd24 3 of your back 4 have 28 mins playing time between them preseason and your starting all 3 in a prem game

  • 46 will die for the toon army // Aug 5, 2015 at 11:15 AM

All the wingers we have pressing wingers short passes not the high crosses may b only Aarons tries the high cross but really have good crossers on the full backs. Janmatt Haidara and Dummett really have a good cross in them.

The best judgment will b against Soton. I have seen NUFC play well last season with these bad players against very good team. Fighting for theshirt. If Blackie can get his work done and Mcclaren oorganises them well. I think we have a good team around.

  • 47 will die for the toon army // Aug 5, 2015 at 11:20 AM

    Our toon

The Chelsea back up players might b better than ours but cant compete at the highest level among the top teams. Thats why they are back up. Mikel might play NUFC but not Barca. Thats where they will neeed Matic.

  • 48 Our Toon // Aug 5, 2015 at 11:25 AM

Agreed on Mikel but Jose will probably use them both and counter Barca.

After having that rant I’ve predicted 10th did so more out of hope. I wouldn’t be surprised if McClaren had a look at the team in first couple of games before deciding to delve back into the transfer market
