Can You Help Pedal For Pounds?

10:14 pm, Thursday, August 6th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 96 Comments

Two brothers Phil and Richard Milbourne are on a mission to cycle to all 92 Premier and Football League grounds in England and Wales during four weeks in July and August 2015.

It’s all on behalf of charity and they are raising money for Breast Cancer Care and the British Liver Trust.

Pedal for pounds aye…Is there pound to pound value in that?

Can’t believe the new season is upon us. Time flies when, well, time flies!

    Have I missed much lately?

  • 6 bobby mango // Aug 6, 2015 at 10:32 PM

Are they going to speak to Charlie Austin about his now existent transfer to us?

  • 7 Belfast // Aug 6, 2015 at 10:36 PM

Nope, but I’ve a coat in the house that might fit you Ed.

  • 8 Blofal // Aug 6, 2015 at 10:37 PM

McClaren said on BBC radio a couple of days ago that we haven’t put in a bid for Austin.

I personally am not sold on him yet. He had one amazing goal last season and all the rest were just penalty box scraps or penalties.

I wouldn’t mind if these Salomón Rondón rumours were true. He is a very clinical finisher.

  • 9 Belfast // Aug 6, 2015 at 10:43 PM

Yep Ibiza you missed the part where people where saying thank god Ibiza isn’t here.

    Not me though.

  • 10 G // Aug 6, 2015 at 10:43 PM

Excellent efforts lads, I personally pedal to lose pounds, but I will be swinging some cash your way.

  • 11 Tsunki // Aug 6, 2015 at 10:43 PM

Hang on….isnt the guy on the pushbike on the left Charlie Austin? No, no its not sorry. False alarm. Judging by the amount of interest Charlies been getting maybe his agent should be on his bike.

  • 12 Tsunki // Aug 6, 2015 at 10:46 PM

Belfast who is this Ibiza and should we be worried?

  • 13 Belfast // Aug 6, 2015 at 10:47 PM

I’m not sure if it’s the popular one or the unpopular one Skunki.

  • 14 Ibizatoon // Aug 6, 2015 at 10:47 PM

Belfast…To be fair, I can understand that.

I could do without being around me at the minute. Never understood it before, but what a tw@.

  • 15 Ibizatoon // Aug 6, 2015 at 10:50 PM

    Is there two of me?

    Popular? Unpopular?

Maybe the doctor was right, I’m not ready to come back on here.

Bit of a Jekyll and Hyde character eh? Isn’t this the former Fence aficionado? My, how the mighty have fallen. He’s turned from the Switzerland to the ISIS of the blog.

  • 18 Belfast // Aug 6, 2015 at 10:54 PM

Yep it’s definitely the unpopular one.

  • 19 Belfast // Aug 6, 2015 at 10:57 PM

    I apologise.

King Percy – reverting to form – what a devious character.

Welshy is suffering a slow decline into madness because of how we’ve treat him. Unfortunatley, because it’s Welshy’s job to take responsibility for everything negative, it’s his fault.

    It’s a funny old world.

  • 38 soundoid // Aug 7, 2015 at 12:36 AM

Don’t expect you’re first 11 out on the field Sunday. It will be a very sober first team with bags of potential on the bench. Remember Steve learn’t from Fergie. Expect a lot of rotation as the season progresses. Wishing the team and the staff and of course the fans a great season. Evolution not a revolution HWTL!

  • 39 Jail for Ashley // Aug 7, 2015 at 12:43 AM

I wish we could sign two more quality players, sell Obertoton and Marveaux so tbat I could say fair play Mashers instead of thinking the fat cnut hasn’t changed policy at all only spent more on a few players because he’s gutted about the Bony deal.

  • 40 jimmysmith // Aug 7, 2015 at 12:47 AM

Who was that female asking real journalistic questions and slightly irritating McClaren? Louise Taylor?

Optimism and positivity is his only real choice of course, because negativity is hardly an inspiring way to start, but it is true that after last season in particular, and a pathalogical capacity to shoot ourselves in the foot under Ashley, he has taken on a tough job and he has a lot to prove. I’m hoping we get some luck early doors and some good results. That would help immensely.

  • 41 Thump // Aug 7, 2015 at 2:22 AM

@jimmy: Didn’t sound like her. Wheese Keys Louise could cut glass with her voice.

  • 42 davis_toons // Aug 7, 2015 at 3:06 AM

SDJ will still be learning the game and so will be the new young players.

SDJ is not a fast player so dont expect very fast attacking football.

More or less will be the same game with the same players.

  • 43 Thump // Aug 7, 2015 at 3:24 AM

@davis: SDJ is not, but Gini is. Either way, don’t underestimate positioning – it can make up for pace pretty happily.

  • 44 davis_toons // Aug 7, 2015 at 4:25 AM

The midfield needs to work more..

I would expect Cheick Tiote to be more active in his DM role or be replace by Vurnon Anita. (Anita seems to be a better passer football player and CT is more of a David Betty kind of player that will chase ball down)

Jack Colback is a great addition to the team but he can be very plain. In terms of creativity. (thats how goals are created)

Moussa Sissoko..he can be a better player apart from working harder.

Siem de jong needs to show us he can cut it at Newcastle.

Time for E.Riviere to score some goals or be ship.
(Time waits for no one or we will be in trouble again and this time around we dont have Jonas to help us again )

Same goes to Cisse..he needs to watch his toes..

Remy Cabella ..he needs to perform and proof himself..i have nothing much good to talk abt him. (HBA should have stayed)

We need more qualities players to come in and although we have started some spending…we need to offload some very avg players and bring in more quality players.

If our midfielder is not going to created or score goals..then do you expect our CD defenders to be the main person to do the job?

  • 45 Reyantoon // Aug 7, 2015 at 4:57 AM

I still think we will sign Austin and Thauvin. Not my priorities and not been keen on both but if we are to splash 15m or plus,we ‘d rather go for Lacazatte and Jesse from Real Madrid.
McLaren so far have been making the right decisions.Keeping Colo as captain is one way of settling the team to say the least.Colo and Mbemba will produce strong back line after a short while :-).

  • 46 Reyantoon // Aug 7, 2015 at 4:59 AM

    🙂 🙂

  • 47 davis_toons // Aug 7, 2015 at 5:41 AM

Thump, i totally agree with you on positioning.. and like interception which is key to Colo game.

SDJ needs to show us what we thought he could do.

    To win games..
To attack is the key to win games unless you are another RDM whom won the CL with Chelsea. We need better quality midfielder.

KK focus attack for a reason..there is only so much you can defends.

Can Someone Truly tell me who is our Best Midfielder that could create goals for this Newcastle team?

    I bet anyone could.

Of course we are hope that SDJ and Wijnaldum counld really come real good as we already have a decent midfield with Colback and Sissoko.

Wijnaldum reminds me of him…a wasted and wash away now..

SDJ? Hopefully he is as good as Mark Viduka..

  • 50 davis_toons // Aug 7, 2015 at 6:00 AM

  • 59 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Aug 7, 2015 at 6:47 AM

OP…the contract for Colo is not really the problem. The problem is both Willo and Saylor will make up half of our defense if they stay firm

Another CB should have been brought in and so should another RB.

  • 64 Ron Knee // Aug 7, 2015 at 6:58 AM

In his interview, didn’t McClaren say that Mbemba had resumed training at SJP? Presumably, the visa was granted.

  • 65 Take a Chancel on me // Aug 7, 2015 at 7:00 AM

I’m in awful pain and have trouble sleeping, The morphine helps me get a couple of hours at best. I went for a check up yesterday and had the stitches out of my considerably large scar on my chest, so what gives you the impression nothing has happened to me?

  • 66 LGFUAD21 // Aug 7, 2015 at 7:05 AM

You can really say nothing has changed.

This summer we’ve signed 2 £10m + players. Is that enough to get into Europa?

Probably not. But it’s progress mate. You expect instant results just like coffee.

My guess is that we need to sell some more deadweight before we buy. Both for squad no’s and for the wage bill.

On another note. Ideally I’d like another cb. But for all those on Colos back. When was the last time you saw a team bed in 2 new cbs successfully.

It’s foolish to think if we simply sign to good cb’s and thrown them in that all our problems will be solves. It’s a recipe for disaster having 2 new cb’s that have never played together, one doesn’t know the league, the other one may know the league (not if its the fans favoured van dijk, matip or rutgiers), but won’t know the team.

It’d be better doing as Steve said in the call in and focussing on getting the whole team to defend properly. Getting some protection for the cb’s.

  • 67 LGFUAD21 // Aug 7, 2015 at 7:06 AM

The visa is sorted which is why he was able to play against monchengladbach

  • 68 optimistic prime // Aug 7, 2015 at 7:07 AM

The colo contract is the icing on the pile of shite! He’s never been a good defender despite people’s beliefs, he has no Intrest and isn’t fit to be the captain.

I don’t worry about Saylor as he’ll only be fit for a fortnight, Willo is a pro and will probably be the only one of the 3 that improves under Mclaren.

We’ve conceded on average 1.5 goals per game for 3 years yet we stick with them and buy a unproven kid.

Nothing’s changed that I can see, all we need now is a few to leave and it’s exactly like every other window.

  • 69 optimistic prime // Aug 7, 2015 at 7:14 AM

I expect blatant problems in our squad to be addressed and for the club to attempt to have a balanced squad.
I couldn’t give a toss how much they cost, price doesn’t guarantee they’ll be a success.

SDJ Cabella, are they any different from Mitrovich and Windi? Rivierre = Mbemba?
A few quid more but same sort of targets, with no thought of the what the team or squad needs.

Spending money on a prospect CB and sticking with the current 3 and extending ones contract is a piss take.

  • 70 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 7, 2015 at 7:15 AM

Is Colo getting a new contract? Have I missed something?

Colo is the best of Saylor, Willo, Colo and probably Lascelles at the minute. IF Mbemba settles quickly then he is our top centre half, if he doesn’t settle quickly, or well then it does leave us very weak at the back.

You mention bedding in 2 new centre backs at the same time, well next summer we lose Saylor, Willo and Colo (unless I have missed him getting a new contract). That is at least 2 new centre halves required then, so we would be in the same situation, only with less experience to back it up.

2 were need this summer, so they could settle with 2 experienced + Lascelles being bedded in. One of Willo, Colo and Saylor should be shipped out, be that by cutting them loose, accepting a lower fee, whatever.

The whole team does need to defend better, and that will come from the shape and style. It will also help that we aim to retain the ball, rather than giving it straight back to the opposition and having wave after wave of attack to repel.

  • 71 Take a Chancel on me // Aug 7, 2015 at 7:16 AM

  • 74 cestriasteve // Aug 7, 2015 at 7:18 AM

mbemba whilst not a EPL proven CB MUST be an improvement on Mike Williamson, our Mitzy 14 year old West Highland Terrier is a better footballer than Mike Williamson FACT. If he’s ahead of Mbemba then we are doomed.

  • 75 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 7, 2015 at 7:19 AM

Just checked out .com, baffled that Colo has a one year extension! Same wages? Incredible, unless it is with a view to him moving to a player coach role from next season then I don’t get it?

Either that or they realise they have made a mess of this window with just 1 centre half, and are scared by having to bring in too many next year.

Very odd decision from the club, a guy who will be 35 by the time his deal expires, and is increasingly succumbing to niggly injuries.

  • 80 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 7, 2015 at 7:34 AM

Ron Knee, has him down as being expected to start on Sunday…. If we weren’t keeping people based on major failures last season we would have a pretty small squad, but at his age, and wages, I can’t quite understand the thought behind it.

Was there any mention of a wage cut when it was reported?

  • 81 firebug666 // Aug 7, 2015 at 7:34 AM

Mbemba is back in training, you did not miss hear McClaren.

I think the reason Coloccini got the year extension is that the inept one at Palace had offered him a three year contract to move there, Our club did not want to spend any money on a replacement so tempted Coloccini with another year and the captains armband.

It not about the team, the club or the fans, it’s all about money…..

Speaking to the press on Thursday, McClaren spoke of his dilemma over whether to select Mitrovic and Mbemba in Sunday’s starting XI, but didn’t confirm that the latter player’s work permit had been granted.

  • 88 martoon // Aug 7, 2015 at 7:52 AM

    League Cup round:
    FA cup round:
No of 1st team signings this season:
No of 1st team leavers this season:
    Top goal scorer:
No of goals for top scorer:

  • 89 Bambams // Aug 7, 2015 at 7:55 AM

There is still so much negativity fellas….We have got to just wait and see how this window pans out.
Yes I am also surprised at the extension for Colo but hopefully after all the rubbish we played at the end of the season we now do have better players.
These better players will be attacking more and we won’t be seeing our defence having the ball more than midfield and up front.
We have great ball carriers now in Wini, Aarons and Sissoko
We have SDJ who is literally the best player I have seen in a Toon Top for years…when fit !
We have in my opinion the best half chance finisher in the prem in Cisse. If he doesn’t have to think about it my god he will score goals and with the knock downs and half chances created by Mitrovic. …..

I am so much more optimistic this season, I am actually looking forward to seeing how we play.

Yes I would have loved to have signed another CB and Austin and Shiqiri. ….but we haven’t.

Mac is a great coach as is Cathro we know.

Let’s see what style we play and give them a few games.

Aarons is going to have some season

  • 90 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 7, 2015 at 7:57 AM

Haha, Graeme Swann’s match prediction for Leciester Sunderland on the BBC this week –
Swann’s prediction: This is a tricky one for me – living in Nottingham I am not allowed to like Leicester and being a Newcastle fan I am not allowed to like Sunderland. So I’m going for 0-0. It will be the worst game of the week and the last game on MOTD – don’t even bother watching it

Strangely, both Swann and Lawro have us down for a win 2-0 from Swann, and 2-1 from Lawro.

Macca said that Coloccini will retain the captaincy and that he had persuaded the club to break an unwritten rule and offer a contract extension. Interesting if he did and that he has effectively broken the “rule of Ashley”.
In any event it is highly unusual for Mike Ashley to approve the extension of a deal for a player in his 30s.
Macca said he was aware that Alan Pardew was prepared to offer Coloccini a three-year contract Palace. So Macca being a board member persuaded his fellow directors to extend Colo’s agreement by one year until the summer of 2017- with an option for a further 12 months.
Macca claimed it had hindered Colo’s preparation but that he’ll finish his careeer with the toon now.

An achilles problem has prevented Coloccini playing in pre-season but he is back in full training and is in contention for involvement at home to Southampton on Sunday. When he returns to the starting XI a central defender described as a “Rolls-Royce” by Pardew knows he will have to win over a sceptical Tyneside public whose trust he forfeited after some underachieving performances last season.

Thanks, I’m still a bit sceptical on a new contract for him. Particularly if it is still draining significant amounts from the wages pot. We may have spent a bit more net this summer, but I’d imagine there are still significant wage restrictions in place. I was okay with Colo remaining and playing out his contract, as he gives experience that we need with Lascelles and Mbemba in and around the squad. But an extension seems to be taking it too far.

The more I think about it, this could be more a product of them failing to bring in one of their centre back targets, so we are settling for what we have and ensuring we aren’t left too short when both Saylor and Willo’s contracts expire next summer.

Colo and Mbemba are probably our best 2 centre halves at the moment, I haven’t seen enough of Mbemba to tell whether he is a good communicator and feel that we need that in the back line. I’d say all back lines need it.

I think our defence will be improved through style and tactics, but I don’t think we have done anywhere near enough of ‘making our own luck’ to claim Ashley has backed up his end of season statement.
