Newcastle Complete Signing Of Striker

11:22 am, Thursday, August 6th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 133 Comments

It looks like Northampton Town’s Ivan Toney has done enough in his two day trial over the weekend to justify a contract at Newcastle,  and the club have just announced they have signed the talented teenager

ivan toney newcastle signing

Ivan Toney – signed to long term contract

This is what Newcastle have put out on the web-site this morning.

========

Newcastle United have completed the signing of striker Ivan Toney from Northampton Town.

The 19-year-old moves to St. James’ Park for an undisclosed fee and has signed a long-term deal with the Magpies.

Northampton-born Toney made his senior debut for his hometown club in 2012 aged just 16 – becoming the youngest first-team player in the Cobblers’ history.

Last season, he made 44 appearances in all competitions, scoring ten goals.

“I’m happy to be here and very excited,” “The players here are a great standard and I can’t wait to get going and show what I’m all about.¨

“Being a young lad who is scoring goals in the Football League was a great thing. Now I want to progress here and eventually do it in the Premier League.”

Peter Beardsley, football development manager at Newcastle United, added:

“We have been very impressed with Ivan already.¨ “He is a very good player, with great enthusiasm and a first-class attitude, and has all the attributes to have a bright future at the Club.”

========

Ivan is a great prospect and as mentioned above he was just 16 years old when he made his first team debut at Northampton Town in November of 2012.

That was in a 3–3 draw with Bradford City at Valley Parade in the FA Cup, and since then he has made 60 appearances with 13 goals and 6 assists for his home town club.

The 5ft 10ins tall center-forward is expected to have cost around £500K (maybe less), and he will be one for the future at Newcastle.

After the game with Borussia Monchengladbach last Saturday Steve McClaren was asked about Toney:

“Northampton have allowed him to train for a couple of days. He’s done that and we will assess that.”

“He has trained with Peter Beardsley in the U21s, now we just have to sit him down and assess what we are going to do.”

It looks like Ivan did well, and it will be interesting to see if he is now sent out on loan to continue to get first team games.

He’s a good young signing for us.

Comments welcome.

  • 2 Bambams // Aug 6, 2015 at 11:26 AM

I am very happy with this signing. The kid has some skill and it’s a no brainer at the price (suggested 300k)
One for the future, unless they start him alongside Mbemba at CB
    Woo hoo

  • 3 jayphoto // Aug 6, 2015 at 11:31 AM

10 goals for Northampton last season! Not as bad as it sounds, Northampton are a very defensive side and create few chances!
60 odd FL appearances should mean hes ahead of players like Arma in development!
Just hoping we sign a centreback soon! Apparantly Celtic won’t sign Van Dijk until they’ve qualified for the group stages… maybe its a case of we want to sign him?

  • 4 DaraghL // Aug 6, 2015 at 11:35 AM

    Jayphoto –

Ronny Deila has stated that many times. If they don’t qualify for the groups he’s likely to go. Got to respect the lad and club for waiting to see if they qualify.

Hopefully we will swoop in if they don’t; however we may have to join a queue.

As for Toney, I’m delighted. I would like to see us buying more of these players. Minimal risk given that they are young with some games to their name.

    Hopefully another Ayoze 😉 HWTL

    for you cricket lovers
    11:28
What a catch! WHAT A CATCH! Ben Stokes has taken an absolute worldie, the epitome of England’s total dominance of Australia in 30 mad minutes this morning. Thick edge from Adam Voges, Stokes, at fifth slip, flies to his right and clings on, one-handed, with the ball behind him. Absolutely sensational. Even the England player’s can’t believe it. Australia are 21-5!

  • 6 Liono // Aug 6, 2015 at 11:38 AM

van dijk will be going to southampton ive heard. they are a better prospect at this stage.

BUT would love to see Van Dijk. We’d have a proper dutch spine then.

Obertan and Haidara have been the stars of the magpies 24/7 so far. But also credit to the other guys that have been mostly involved so far Haidara, Aarons, Bigi, Sissoko, Woodman, Darlow.

  • 8 Liono // Aug 6, 2015 at 11:38 AM

forgot Krul in there of course…

I was dissapointed with Sissoko in Episode 3 (yet to see 4). He spoke in French the whole time…he’s been here 2 and a half years?

Very impressed with Haidara and Woodman in particular. Obertan moping after Fifa was funny….you would think he’s used to losing 😉

Little bit lost with this one surely Arma should have been kept after all he has had the experience of training with premiership players we’re still going to need another striker as well as a centre back

  • 13 nut meg // Aug 6, 2015 at 11:42 AM

    cricket….and another one!!

  • 14 Slank // Aug 6, 2015 at 11:44 AM

Haidara and Bigi seem a real pair of jokers. Always laughing and smiling unlike Obertan.

Not many Toon supporters from Australia on here today, any reason ?

  • 16 DaraghL // Aug 6, 2015 at 11:45 AM

    kakaobi –

Toney has played games at lower level. Arma has not. Arma needs to play games, hence why he was loaned.

Toney may still be loaned out. Or the club could have intentions to work on him with a view to bringing him through this/next year.

  • 17 AlfiePotter // Aug 6, 2015 at 11:46 AM

Ive watched most of Toneys 60 NTFC appearances. The boy has a tremendous leap on him and if he learns to control his body he will be some player. Id describe him as awkward to handle and gets on the end of things, dosnt really run through on goal and go 1 on 1 with the keeper.

He has an edge to him. Reminds me of Nile Ranger but without the gold teeth, shit tattoos and self destruction button.

Will be some player if his raw talent is coached.

  • 18 jayphoto // Aug 6, 2015 at 11:48 AM

@DaraghL – heard Van Dijk was off regardless of group stages, just they won’t let him leave until they’ve qualified. I guess the money they’d make from the groups is far higher than they would from his fee!
Think Van Dijk probably has his eye on the euros. Hes played well in Europe last season and didn’t get much notice from the national team. Something tells me playing for Newcastle or Southampton will put him square in the gaze of the national team

  • 19 jayphoto // Aug 6, 2015 at 11:49 AM

Also, really enjoyed that 24/7 video! Great to see behind the scenes and get to see the players as actual people/personalities

  • 20 jayphoto // Aug 6, 2015 at 11:52 AM

Hope they keep the videos up throughout the season! Be a way of keeping fans on board if things aren’t going aswell and maybe lessoning the abuse certain players get.
They need to do a feature with Mike Williamson and Yoann Gouffran feeding the homeless or saving kittens!

Could be right. Lad beside me here is a die-hard Celtic Fan (I live in Dublin) and reckons it’s a case of once they’re in Europe he will stay.

If they’re knocked out then all they have is domestic tournaments which, understandably, is not considered strong enough to put him in view of Dutch contention.

Either way, hope we get him. I’ve been a big fan of his for the last couple of years. He is very steady on the ball. Wanyama showed just because it’s the SPL doesn’t mean you can’t make the jump to the Prem.

    33/7 comical cricket.

  • 24 DaraghL // Aug 6, 2015 at 11:55 AM

Williamson and Gouffran could have their own sitcom. Bit like Laurel and Hardy where they can’t do anything right.

Williamson accidentally uses gone off eggs in the sandwiches for the homeless.

  • 26 jayphoto // Aug 6, 2015 at 11:56 AM

@daraghL – yea I’ve not seen much of him but a friend of mine who’s a celtic diehard says Van Dijk is their strongest player in every position. His passing range is like a midfield playmaker and he’s fairly quick for his size.
Watched him against Qarabag and against the Icelandic side in CL and he looked head and shoulders ahead of anyone else.

Dunk could be good he is a good age so is ready to step up to the premiership a lot of the best centre backs who are British started in the Championship , Williams , Shawcross , Dann etc

Get him for 4 million and Lingard for 2.5 would do for me for business until January

Although I have sneaky suspicion we are trying to get another 10 million plus player but are waiting on a combination of factors such as us selling players and waiting on the selling club to get desperate to knock the price down

He was allowed to play vs B.Mon in the friendly but then had to go back to formally apply for his visa, as others have said – just a formality really

    NUFC statement from late July:

Newcastle United can confirm that due to the nature of Saturday’s pre-season friendly against Borussia Mönchengladbach, the Club has obtained the necessary permissions in order for Chancel Mbemba to be involved in the squad to face the Bundesliga outfit.

The Club would like to thank Anderlecht for their co-operation in this matter.

The player has an appointment overseas in midweek to make his formal visa application, which the Club expect to be issued in order that he can be available for selection for the Magpies’ first game of the Barclay’s Premier League season against Southampton.

Venezuela striker Salomon Rondon, who plays for Russian outfit Zenit St. Petersburg, has offers from Newcastle, Aston Villa and West Ham, according to Russian news outlet Championat.
Earlier media reported that he was in England to discuss potential moves to the Premier League with his agent last month. Rondon moved to Zenit from Rubin Kazan in January 2014 and went on to win the Russian league and Super Cup.
Ovacion Deportes are also reporting that the three Premier League clubs have contacted Zenit over the possibility of signing Rondon and his agent Pablo Martinez confirmed that there were a ‘number of proposals’ for his client and they were ‘considering their options’.
AC Milan, Inter Milan and Everton were among other clubs interested, but nothing concrete was made by those clubs, thus making Newcastle, West Ham and Aston Villa the front runners for his signature.
    More to follow.

I’d settle for a good CB jamsha. We’re 4th in the money spent league, which is a first for Ashley, yet I think he’ll still buy if the right one comes up. He’s building his own team and must have certain players for each job in his head. If one becomes possible, i think he’ll get them. More might become available in January. He asked for three windows so i’ll definitely give him him. The quality of signings makes it worth the wait. Three windows, almost a different squad, with good back up. I see what his plan is and it looks tasty. It will take a stupid bid by city to make him sell sissoko. Maybe players plus cash – worth a look in their long list of wasted quality.

Colo 1 year extension!!! Most surprising news of the summer! thought he was itching to go and the club would want him off the wage bill

  • 106 DaraghL // Aug 6, 2015 at 1:58 PM

Delighted to hear that Colo has signed a contract extension. He can be a great player and looked out of form last season. Let’s not forget he was in the Team of the Season 2 years ago.

He is very comfortable on the ball and this will help us play the passing game.

Hopefully he is fit as Mbemba Colo would be a decent partnership. Still would like another one in to challenge them two along with Lascelles and Taylor.

  • 107 Bobbybee // Aug 6, 2015 at 2:01 PM

Everyone was rubbish last season. There’s a different feel about everything, so I can see Collo back to his best. Old head. Young legs – mbemda – can be very effective. Defending ten yards further up will mean that mbemba should always have ground enough to chase back if Collo gets caught out. It’s worth waiting and see how it works imo.

  • 108 Noel Worst // Aug 6, 2015 at 2:01 PM

    Well well!

I wasn’t for Colo staying because of his past desire to leave etc, at least with this one-year extension he has shown with action that he is committed rather than just loitering until his contract runs down on the false premise that he wants to be here. Hopefully his demeanour is better on the pitch after this and he gets his head back in the game.

  • 109 davetoon // Aug 6, 2015 at 2:01 PM

Hopefully this means that Colo’s personal issues for leaving are now in the past and he can concentrate on his defending

  • 110 Noel Worst // Aug 6, 2015 at 2:02 PM

Hopefully he takes more responsibility when we’re defeated and such now, no sending the likes of Janmaat to face the media. If you want to be the captain you have to be all in!

  • 111 Offkey // Aug 6, 2015 at 2:02 PM

    Ok, didn’t see that coming…..

  • 112 expatmag // Aug 6, 2015 at 2:03 PM

    Mag52

Yes. I expect the likes of Clarke Rogers Watson Haddin to be phased out or retire and younger lads brought in over the next couple of cricket seasons to gel into a new formidable Aussie team.

Colo signing the extension tells me that Taylor and Williamson will both be sold by January

  • 115 TacoFlavoredKisses ForMyBen-arfa // Aug 6, 2015 at 2:05 PM

you realize that POS charnley is going to tell fans they signed the CB that everyone clammored for. This is by far the worst news of the summer and easily negates most of the goodwill. WE will struggle bad with colo in the back 4. he is one of the worst cbs in the league.

  • 116 Noel Worst // Aug 6, 2015 at 2:05 PM

Offer Hull Mike Williamson and a couple of mil for Michael Dawson. Same age and an upgrade, good for squad competition.

  • 117 Toonfan8 // Aug 6, 2015 at 2:06 PM

ok now its clear that our back four this season is
    janmaat…mbemba…collo…haidara
if colo will be fit and in form it can be good defence, we will see, Haidara is also injury prone, they have to stay fit, and we can have good season…
    GK—Krul,Darlow,Elliot,Woodman
    DF—Collocini,Mbemba,S.Taylor,Lascelles,Williamson,Janmaat,Haidara,Dummet,Good
    MF—Wijnaldum,Anita,Tiote,Colback,De Jong,Sissoko,Aarons,Cabella,Abeid,Obertan,Gouffran,Marveaux,Vuckic,Bigirimana,S.Ameobi
    SC—Mitrovic,Cisse,Perez,Riviere,Armstrong
    32 players:
    3 on loan – Woodman,Ameobi,Armstrong
need to go on loan —Vuckic,Good,Bigirimana
    sell – Gouffran,Marveaux
Willo to stay if no CB comes in…
thats 24 man squad for coming season:
    GK:Krul,Darlow,Elliot
    DF:Collocini,Mbemba,S.Taylor,Lascelles,Williamson,Janmaat,Haidara,Dummet
    MF:Wijnaldum,Anita,Colback,Tiote,Abeid,Sissoko,De Jong,Aarons,Obertan,Cabella
    SC:Mitrovic,Cisse,Perez,Riviere

maybee best line up when everybody is fit and up to speed:
    ………………………Krul……………………….
    janmaat…mbemba….collo……haidara
    ………wijnaldum………tiote………………
    sissoko………….de jong…………cabella
    ………………….mitrovic…………………….
    ……………………………………………………..
    but there are other options:
    S.Taylor,Dummet for defence
    Anita,Colback in CM
    Aarons,Perez in AM positions
    Cisse SC
we need probably better quality in defence on bench and on proper winger….that will do this window…

    penfold OUT!!!!!!
    AHSLEY OUT!!!!!!!
    COLO OUT!!!!!!!!!!

that scumbag colo was healthy the hold time, he was holding out for a new deal.

  • 119 Noel Worst // Aug 6, 2015 at 2:06 PM

    Expat

Unfortunately I think we’re stuck with Saylor due to the homegrown rules. He’d be gone ahead of Willo for me if not for that.

  • 120 TacoFlavoredKisses ForMyBen-arfa // Aug 6, 2015 at 2:08 PM

Somewhere toonbrother has jumped off a roof.

    ASHLEY OUTTTTTTTTT
    PENFOLD OUTTTT
    COLO OUTTT

  • 121 Toonfan8 // Aug 6, 2015 at 2:10 PM

if they dont sale Collocini,Tiote,Sissoko,Janmaat,Krul it is good, because we will also need their experience from this league…I think we will be much better than last season

  • 122 TacoFlavoredKisses ForMyBen-arfa // Aug 6, 2015 at 2:12 PM

the only think colo is experienced in is leaving the other teams forwards alone and misjudging headers. I think we can do w/out that.

  • 123 Noel Worst // Aug 6, 2015 at 2:13 PM

My only reservation is an Mbemba/Clo partnership is seriously lacking in strength. Mbemba is athletic and quick but not exceptionally strong and there are many STs in the league who could continue to bully us, off the top of my head all these STs would be problematic for that partnership due to their strength:

    Costa
    Lukaku
    Giroud
    Benteke
    Pelle
    Diouf
    Gomis

  • 124 TacoFlavoredKisses ForMyBen-arfa // Aug 6, 2015 at 2:14 PM

My only reservation is an Mbemba/Clo partnership is that colo is part of it.

  • 125 Rotonda heights // Aug 6, 2015 at 2:14 PM

    davetoon at 109

as far as i know his family are still in argentina so i just don’t get this one at all. past his sell by date, not captain material, just a strange one.

Would be much happier getting Dunk if we can’t realistically get Rutiger or Abdennour etc

  • 126 DaraghL // Aug 6, 2015 at 2:15 PM

Ok Taco…we heard you the first time

  • 127 TacoFlavoredKisses ForMyBen-arfa // Aug 6, 2015 at 2:16 PM

    Rotonda heights

whats not to get? he held out! he has a great agent. He waited for it to be too late for the team to get another CB and then leveraged for a 1 year extension.

  • 128 Take a Chancel on me // Aug 6, 2015 at 2:18 PM

I actually think Colo and Mbemba could be a good partnership

  • 129 GeordieinOhio // Aug 6, 2015 at 2:19 PM

Not sure if anyone asked this…… with colo signing an extension will this be classed as our 5th NEW signing?

  • 130 Take a Chancel on me // Aug 6, 2015 at 2:19 PM

Think it’s time to replace Adam Lyth

  • 131 nut meg // Aug 6, 2015 at 2:20 PM

He probably gets a pay rise as well!!

  • 132 Bobbybee // Aug 6, 2015 at 2:27 PM

Go easy on him. This was to be his last ever contract and remember, for them, it’s all about the money now. Everybody might benefit if Macca can get him back to his best. Win win.

  • 133 TacoFlavoredKisses ForMyBen-arfa // Aug 6, 2015 at 2:35 PM

Go easy on him on him the way he goes easy on the other team? no thanks. Its hard to care about his best interest when he checked out mentally 2 years ago. Anyone who doesnt think hell be allowed to go home after his next injury is kidding themselves. Typical Ashley move is to go for a cheap stop gap instead of fixing the issue.
