It looks like Northampton Town’s Ivan Toney has done enough in his two day trial over the weekend to justify a contract at Newcastle, and the club have just announced they have signed the talented teenager
Ivan Toney – signed to long term contract
This is what Newcastle have put out on the web-site this morning.
========
Newcastle United have completed the signing of striker Ivan Toney from Northampton Town.
The 19-year-old moves to St. James’ Park for an undisclosed fee and has signed a long-term deal with the Magpies.
Northampton-born Toney made his senior debut for his hometown club in 2012 aged just 16 – becoming the youngest first-team player in the Cobblers’ history.
Last season, he made 44 appearances in all competitions, scoring ten goals.
“I’m happy to be here and very excited,” “The players here are a great standard and I can’t wait to get going and show what I’m all about.¨
“Being a young lad who is scoring goals in the Football League was a great thing. Now I want to progress here and eventually do it in the Premier League.”
Peter Beardsley, football development manager at Newcastle United, added:
“We have been very impressed with Ivan already.¨ “He is a very good player, with great enthusiasm and a first-class attitude, and has all the attributes to have a bright future at the Club.”
========
Ivan is a great prospect and as mentioned above he was just 16 years old when he made his first team debut at Northampton Town in November of 2012.
That was in a 3–3 draw with Bradford City at Valley Parade in the FA Cup, and since then he has made 60 appearances with 13 goals and 6 assists for his home town club.
The 5ft 10ins tall center-forward is expected to have cost around £500K (maybe less), and he will be one for the future at Newcastle.
After the game with Borussia Monchengladbach last Saturday Steve McClaren was asked about Toney:
“Northampton have allowed him to train for a couple of days. He’s done that and we will assess that.”
“He has trained with Peter Beardsley in the U21s, now we just have to sit him down and assess what we are going to do.”
It looks like Ivan did well, and it will be interesting to see if he is now sent out on loan to continue to get first team games.
He’s a good young signing for us.
Comments welcome.

Comment #2I am very happy with this signing. The kid has some skill and it’s a no brainer at the price (suggested 300k)
One for the future, unless they start him alongside Mbemba at CB
Woo hoo

Comment #310 goals for Northampton last season! Not as bad as it sounds, Northampton are a very defensive side and create few chances!
60 odd FL appearances should mean hes ahead of players like Arma in development!
Just hoping we sign a centreback soon! Apparantly Celtic won’t sign Van Dijk until they’ve qualified for the group stages… maybe its a case of we want to sign him?

Ronny Deila has stated that many times. If they don’t qualify for the groups he’s likely to go. Got to respect the lad and club for waiting to see if they qualify.
Hopefully we will swoop in if they don’t; however we may have to join a queue.
As for Toney, I’m delighted. I would like to see us buying more of these players. Minimal risk given that they are young with some games to their name.
Hopefully another Ayoze 😉 HWTL

What a catch! WHAT A CATCH! Ben Stokes has taken an absolute worldie, the epitome of England’s total dominance of Australia in 30 mad minutes this morning. Thick edge from Adam Voges, Stokes, at fifth slip, flies to his right and clings on, one-handed, with the ball behind him. Absolutely sensational. Even the England player’s can’t believe it. Australia are 21-5!

Comment #7Obertan and Haidara have been the stars of the magpies 24/7 so far. But also credit to the other guys that have been mostly involved so far Haidara, Aarons, Bigi, Sissoko, Woodman, Darlow.

I was dissapointed with Sissoko in Episode 3 (yet to see 4). He spoke in French the whole time…he’s been here 2 and a half years?
Very impressed with Haidara and Woodman in particular. Obertan moping after Fifa was funny….you would think he’s used to losing 😉

Comment #12Little bit lost with this one surely Arma should have been kept after all he has had the experience of training with premiership players we’re still going to need another striker as well as a centre back

Toney has played games at lower level. Arma has not. Arma needs to play games, hence why he was loaned.
Toney may still be loaned out. Or the club could have intentions to work on him with a view to bringing him through this/next year.

Comment #17Ive watched most of Toneys 60 NTFC appearances. The boy has a tremendous leap on him and if he learns to control his body he will be some player. Id describe him as awkward to handle and gets on the end of things, dosnt really run through on goal and go 1 on 1 with the keeper.
He has an edge to him. Reminds me of Nile Ranger but without the gold teeth, shit tattoos and self destruction button.
Will be some player if his raw talent is coached.

Comment #18@DaraghL – heard Van Dijk was off regardless of group stages, just they won’t let him leave until they’ve qualified. I guess the money they’d make from the groups is far higher than they would from his fee!
Think Van Dijk probably has his eye on the euros. Hes played well in Europe last season and didn’t get much notice from the national team. Something tells me playing for Newcastle or Southampton will put him square in the gaze of the national team

Comment #20Hope they keep the videos up throughout the season! Be a way of keeping fans on board if things aren’t going aswell and maybe lessoning the abuse certain players get.
They need to do a feature with Mike Williamson and Yoann Gouffran feeding the homeless or saving kittens!

Could be right. Lad beside me here is a die-hard Celtic Fan (I live in Dublin) and reckons it’s a case of once they’re in Europe he will stay.
If they’re knocked out then all they have is domestic tournaments which, understandably, is not considered strong enough to put him in view of Dutch contention.
Either way, hope we get him. I’ve been a big fan of his for the last couple of years. He is very steady on the ball. Wanyama showed just because it’s the SPL doesn’t mean you can’t make the jump to the Prem.

Comment #24Williamson and Gouffran could have their own sitcom. Bit like Laurel and Hardy where they can’t do anything right.
Williamson accidentally uses gone off eggs in the sandwiches for the homeless.

Comment #26@daraghL – yea I’ve not seen much of him but a friend of mine who’s a celtic diehard says Van Dijk is their strongest player in every position. His passing range is like a midfield playmaker and he’s fairly quick for his size.
Watched him against Qarabag and against the Icelandic side in CL and he looked head and shoulders ahead of anyone else.

Comment #31Dunk could be good he is a good age so is ready to step up to the premiership a lot of the best centre backs who are British started in the Championship , Williams , Shawcross , Dann etc
Get him for 4 million and Lingard for 2.5 would do for me for business until January
Although I have sneaky suspicion we are trying to get another 10 million plus player but are waiting on a combination of factors such as us selling players and waiting on the selling club to get desperate to knock the price down
