It looks like Northampton Town’s Ivan Toney has done enough in his two day trial over the weekend to justify a contract at Newcastle, and the club have just announced they have signed the talented teenager
Ivan Toney – signed to long term contract
This is what Newcastle have put out on the web-site this morning.
========
Newcastle United have completed the signing of striker Ivan Toney from Northampton Town.
The 19-year-old moves to St. James’ Park for an undisclosed fee and has signed a long-term deal with the Magpies.
Northampton-born Toney made his senior debut for his hometown club in 2012 aged just 16 – becoming the youngest first-team player in the Cobblers’ history.
Last season, he made 44 appearances in all competitions, scoring ten goals.
“I’m happy to be here and very excited,” “The players here are a great standard and I can’t wait to get going and show what I’m all about.¨
“Being a young lad who is scoring goals in the Football League was a great thing. Now I want to progress here and eventually do it in the Premier League.”
Peter Beardsley, football development manager at Newcastle United, added:
“We have been very impressed with Ivan already.¨ “He is a very good player, with great enthusiasm and a first-class attitude, and has all the attributes to have a bright future at the Club.”
========
Ivan is a great prospect and as mentioned above he was just 16 years old when he made his first team debut at Northampton Town in November of 2012.
That was in a 3–3 draw with Bradford City at Valley Parade in the FA Cup, and since then he has made 60 appearances with 13 goals and 6 assists for his home town club.
The 5ft 10ins tall center-forward is expected to have cost around £500K (maybe less), and he will be one for the future at Newcastle.
After the game with Borussia Monchengladbach last Saturday Steve McClaren was asked about Toney:
“Northampton have allowed him to train for a couple of days. He’s done that and we will assess that.”
“He has trained with Peter Beardsley in the U21s, now we just have to sit him down and assess what we are going to do.”
It looks like Ivan did well, and it will be interesting to see if he is now sent out on loan to continue to get first team games.
He’s a good young signing for us.
Comments welcome.

Yes indeed. Living in Oz, I have a huge collection of british tv shows on DVD. Loved New Tricks too. They were a really good team.

I’ve stopped going near that site for that reason. All they do is rehash other people’s interviews and make up the worst rumours. They’ve been caught out numerous times.
Issue is Ed & Skysports end up quoting the Chronicle.

Comment #93I’d settle for a good CB jamsha. We’re 4th in the money spent league, which is a first for Ashley, yet I think he’ll still buy if the right one comes up. He’s building his own team and must have certain players for each job in his head. If one becomes possible, i think he’ll get them. More might become available in January. He asked for three windows so i’ll definitely give him him. The quality of signings makes it worth the wait. Three windows, almost a different squad, with good back up. I see what his plan is and it looks tasty. It will take a stupid bid by city to make him sell sissoko. Maybe players plus cash – worth a look in their long list of wasted quality.

Comment #106Delighted to hear that Colo has signed a contract extension. He can be a great player and looked out of form last season. Let’s not forget he was in the Team of the Season 2 years ago.
He is very comfortable on the ball and this will help us play the passing game.
Hopefully he is fit as Mbemba Colo would be a decent partnership. Still would like another one in to challenge them two along with Lascelles and Taylor.

Comment #107Everyone was rubbish last season. There’s a different feel about everything, so I can see Collo back to his best. Old head. Young legs – mbemda – can be very effective. Defending ten yards further up will mean that mbemba should always have ground enough to chase back if Collo gets caught out. It’s worth waiting and see how it works imo.

I wasn’t for Colo staying because of his past desire to leave etc, at least with this one-year extension he has shown with action that he is committed rather than just loitering until his contract runs down on the false premise that he wants to be here. Hopefully his demeanour is better on the pitch after this and he gets his head back in the game.

Comment #109Hopefully this means that Colo’s personal issues for leaving are now in the past and he can concentrate on his defending

Comment #110Hopefully he takes more responsibility when we’re defeated and such now, no sending the likes of Janmaat to face the media. If you want to be the captain you have to be all in!

Yes. I expect the likes of Clarke Rogers Watson Haddin to be phased out or retire and younger lads brought in over the next couple of cricket seasons to gel into a new formidable Aussie team.

Comment #115you realize that POS charnley is going to tell fans they signed the CB that everyone clammored for. This is by far the worst news of the summer and easily negates most of the goodwill. WE will struggle bad with colo in the back 4. he is one of the worst cbs in the league.

Comment #117ok now its clear that our back four this season is
janmaat…mbemba…collo…haidara
if colo will be fit and in form it can be good defence, we will see, Haidara is also injury prone, they have to stay fit, and we can have good season…
GK—Krul,Darlow,Elliot,Woodman
DF—Collocini,Mbemba,S.Taylor,Lascelles,Williamson,Janmaat,Haidara,Dummet,Good
MF—Wijnaldum,Anita,Tiote,Colback,De Jong,Sissoko,Aarons,Cabella,Abeid,Obertan,Gouffran,Marveaux,Vuckic,Bigirimana,S.Ameobi
SC—Mitrovic,Cisse,Perez,Riviere,Armstrong
32 players:
3 on loan – Woodman,Ameobi,Armstrong
need to go on loan —Vuckic,Good,Bigirimana
sell – Gouffran,Marveaux
Willo to stay if no CB comes in…
thats 24 man squad for coming season:
GK:Krul,Darlow,Elliot
DF:Collocini,Mbemba,S.Taylor,Lascelles,Williamson,Janmaat,Haidara,Dummet
MF:Wijnaldum,Anita,Colback,Tiote,Abeid,Sissoko,De Jong,Aarons,Obertan,Cabella
SC:Mitrovic,Cisse,Perez,Riviere
maybee best line up when everybody is fit and up to speed:
………………………Krul……………………….
janmaat…mbemba….collo……haidara
………wijnaldum………tiote………………
sissoko………….de jong…………cabella
………………….mitrovic…………………….
……………………………………………………..
but there are other options:
S.Taylor,Dummet for defence
Anita,Colback in CM
Aarons,Perez in AM positions
Cisse SC
we need probably better quality in defence on bench and on proper winger….that will do this window…
