It looks like Northampton Town’s Ivan Toney has done enough in his two day trial over the weekend to justify a contract at Newcastle, and the club have just announced they have signed the talented teenager
Ivan Toney – signed to long term contract
This is what Newcastle have put out on the web-site this morning.
========
Newcastle United have completed the signing of striker Ivan Toney from Northampton Town.
The 19-year-old moves to St. James’ Park for an undisclosed fee and has signed a long-term deal with the Magpies.
Northampton-born Toney made his senior debut for his hometown club in 2012 aged just 16 – becoming the youngest first-team player in the Cobblers’ history.
Last season, he made 44 appearances in all competitions, scoring ten goals.
“I’m happy to be here and very excited,” “The players here are a great standard and I can’t wait to get going and show what I’m all about.¨
“Being a young lad who is scoring goals in the Football League was a great thing. Now I want to progress here and eventually do it in the Premier League.”
Peter Beardsley, football development manager at Newcastle United, added:
“We have been very impressed with Ivan already.¨ “He is a very good player, with great enthusiasm and a first-class attitude, and has all the attributes to have a bright future at the Club.”
========
Ivan is a great prospect and as mentioned above he was just 16 years old when he made his first team debut at Northampton Town in November of 2012.
That was in a 3–3 draw with Bradford City at Valley Parade in the FA Cup, and since then he has made 60 appearances with 13 goals and 6 assists for his home town club.
The 5ft 10ins tall center-forward is expected to have cost around £500K (maybe less), and he will be one for the future at Newcastle.
After the game with Borussia Monchengladbach last Saturday Steve McClaren was asked about Toney:
“Northampton have allowed him to train for a couple of days. He’s done that and we will assess that.”
“He has trained with Peter Beardsley in the U21s, now we just have to sit him down and assess what we are going to do.”
It looks like Ivan did well, and it will be interesting to see if he is now sent out on loan to continue to get first team games.
He’s a good young signing for us.
Comments welcome.

Comment #122the only think colo is experienced in is leaving the other teams forwards alone and misjudging headers. I think we can do w/out that.

Comment #123My only reservation is an Mbemba/Clo partnership is seriously lacking in strength. Mbemba is athletic and quick but not exceptionally strong and there are many STs in the league who could continue to bully us, off the top of my head all these STs would be problematic for that partnership due to their strength:
Costa
Lukaku
Giroud
Benteke
Pelle
Diouf
Gomis

as far as i know his family are still in argentina so i just don’t get this one at all. past his sell by date, not captain material, just a strange one.
Would be much happier getting Dunk if we can’t realistically get Rutiger or Abdennour etc

whats not to get? he held out! he has a great agent. He waited for it to be too late for the team to get another CB and then leveraged for a 1 year extension.

Comment #132Go easy on him. This was to be his last ever contract and remember, for them, it’s all about the money now. Everybody might benefit if Macca can get him back to his best. Win win.

Comment #133Go easy on him on him the way he goes easy on the other team? no thanks. Its hard to care about his best interest when he checked out mentally 2 years ago. Anyone who doesnt think hell be allowed to go home after his next injury is kidding themselves. Typical Ashley move is to go for a cheap stop gap instead of fixing the issue.
