  • 4 Mr Funk // Aug 6, 2015 at 7:38 PM

    @ TAke a Chancel

Do you think Brighton could be convinced to let Dunk leave for £4 million plus Williamson?

  • 5 Jamseyd24 // Aug 6, 2015 at 7:39 PM

Any reason you mention him, have we been linked?? is he any good??

  • 6 Jamseyd24 // Aug 6, 2015 at 7:45 PM

    Mr Funk

Tell me more about this boy Dunk, I know he is a CB but is he good and have we been linked etc??

  • 7 Mr Funk // Aug 6, 2015 at 7:46 PM

Lewis Dunk was linked to McClaren when he was at Derby.

Here is an article that describes him:

  • 8 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Aug 6, 2015 at 7:52 PM

I think they will let Dunk go if we offer £4M and promise to keep Willo!

  • 9 Mr Funk // Aug 6, 2015 at 8:00 PM

    @ Jesper,

Nah, we will abandon Willo outside their ground

    6Ian Toon // Aug 6, 2015 at 11:26 AM

Lewis Dunk was the highest-rated player last season under the age of 24 according to The Guardian (7.45), the Brighton centre-back has become an integral player to the Seagulls. He made just seven league appearances for the club in season 2013-14 and was on a one-month loan to Bristol City during the campaign, but has been a mainstay last season, starting 37 matches.

The 23-year-old’s lofty frame means that he is commanding in the air, winning 139 of 212 aerial duels as well as mustering 29 headed attempts at goal. That aerial threat has heralded five goals from set pieces, with only two players managing more. Only Ipswich’s Cole Skuse has made more interceptions this season than Dunk’s 129. That only the current top six and Sheffield Wednesday have a better defensive record than Brighton (54 goals conceded) has been in no small part due to the youngster’s presence at the back.

    7Ian Toon // Aug 6, 2015 at 11:27 AM

From The Guardian – I haven’t seen enough of him to comment.

  • 11 hibbit // Aug 6, 2015 at 8:04 PM

theres no doubt willo is not a prem cb but i am sure he would do a good job in most championship clubs

  • 12 Jail for Ashley // Aug 6, 2015 at 8:04 PM

So after Collocinis public want away, his deliberate sending off and total avoidance of the cups and derbies added to the fact we’ve heard him speak once in seven years after he was forced to do an interview and it makes anyone who is not endeared with our curly haired captain a despicable fan, unbelievable!

  • 13 Mr Funk // Aug 6, 2015 at 8:08 PM

    @ hibbit,

I would think Willo would be good in the championship, thats why it maybe a good offer to get Dunk

  • 14 Jib // Aug 6, 2015 at 8:09 PM

    I said wretched not despicable.

  • 15 Jib // Aug 6, 2015 at 8:11 PM

    Come on Vitesse you’re losing
    Start kicking them

  • 16 Thump // Aug 6, 2015 at 8:12 PM

Lee Charnley: “Chris, we’ll give you £4m up front, and you can have Mike Williamson for nowt.”
    Hughton: “No deal, Lee.”
Lee: “I figured it was too much to ask… you can still have Williamson for nowt, mind.”
    Hughton: “Fcuk off, Lee.”

  • 17 hibbit // Aug 6, 2015 at 8:14 PM

mr funk to be honest i dont know enough about dunk but i do know we need to upgrade willo/taylor and if we could use one or more to trade up that would be great

  • 18 Sazzer // Aug 6, 2015 at 8:21 PM

Dunk have reasonably good stats and highly rated so could be decent budget HG buy.

I think we should aim higher but better than we have got.

  • 19 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Aug 6, 2015 at 8:26 PM

    Thump… 😀 lol

  • 20 robmefirst // Aug 6, 2015 at 8:31 PM

Biggest problem with Colo is that he doesn’t do interviews. Definitely has respect in the squad and is our best CB, but c’maan, talk for the team son!

  • 21 Jail for Ashley // Aug 6, 2015 at 8:35 PM

    Same thing !

  • 22 Jail for Ashley // Aug 6, 2015 at 8:42 PM

As I said earlier I’m not sure if it’s a good move or not, I’ve said all summer that although I’d like to see the back of him it wouldn’t be the worst move if he stayed as I think there are more areas of priority to strengthen.

  • 23 spaghetti bandit // Aug 6, 2015 at 8:47 PM

Did anybody here the mourinho anecdote regarding davide santon on talksport this morning?? Talking about how he goes about sussing out new signings and how they will ask for a run of 5 games in th side too show how they go off n he laffs n says when he decides to play a youngen or sign a new player he only needs ten mins n he can tell if they will stay and be apart of his plans or leave and when he was asked for an example on who passed this test etc he said santon in ten minutes proved he had all the mental and physical attributes aswell as being a good player to be a starter,, also was praising his attitude compared to Kevin de bruyne,, then went on to say on his champions league debut he never gave Ronaldo a sniff n tht we never saw th best of him because injurys hampered his progress.. I always liked santon and wish he was still at the club,, would shore up our defensive options no end so versatile.. Regarding colo I’m happy he has had an extension,, hopefully gets back to the form of 2 yr ago with his head straight..

  • 24 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 6, 2015 at 8:53 PM

Austin or a CB? Austin. I want to see a top strike partnership. It’s been too long. Even Mitrovic wants him. That tells you something.

Mbemba , Dummett, Lascelles and Colo. Even Janmaat can play there. Surely, if Carr’s as good as some on here reckon, Lascelles a very good player. If not, what’s he identified him for? I’d like to see us get a top left back. Even better if he could play CB like Janmaat.

  • 25 Jail for Ashley // Aug 6, 2015 at 8:57 PM

I’d prefer RB cover over a new LB, I too wish we still had Santon.

  • 26 Belfast // Aug 6, 2015 at 8:58 PM

What was the point of West Ham entering that competition to play their reserve team ? Waste of time that was.

  • 27 Tsunki // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:06 PM

Spag – whatever Mourinho says in the end Santon fell afoul of Pardew’s lame tactics and the Jurassic methods of our coaching team. The injuries were the final nail in the coffin lid when the fat fingers of the bean counters ran down the defenders column and saw Dummett’s wages next to his. That and Santon was not a great defender. Yes, forgot that little detail.

  • 28 Jack // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:07 PM

Just re-watched our game vs West Ham last season, lets just say a few tears were shed. I don’t even know why, seeing the fans shouting with passion and the players playing like that just touched me. But watching Sissoko and Gutierrez’s celebrations are what hit me the most, never seen such relief and happiness to wear the famous black and white stripes. Definitely my favourite Newcastle match of all time, not in terms of quality, but being able too see what this club can be like when everyone is celebrating together. Honestly Anita take a bow, outstanding match! I totally see what McClaren sees in him…

  • 29 Tsunki // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:07 PM

Belfast I often wonder what is the point of West Ham.

  • 30 TheToonKing // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:07 PM

West Ham out of the Europa league …lol…

  • 31 Tsunki // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:08 PM

Jack that was a good game to be at. Broke my boycott fast for that one. Took a bit of living down too.

  • 32 Tsunki // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:10 PM

Ed btw I think you could at least have sparked up photo shop and mirrored that pic of SM or did it in oil painting or cartoon. Bit lazy using the same pic.

  • 33 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:12 PM

Ryan Taylor, Jonas and Santon could all fill in at right and left. We’ve got very few options there now, unlike at CB. Good defensively minded full backs can help centre backs no end. Our centre backs have never had that in recent years.

  • 34 dok - the horrid colonial // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:13 PM

west ham has better bacon, the east ham of the pig has mostly gristle…

  • 35 sparky55 // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:16 PM

Devastated SM thinks Colo is deserving of a 1 yr extension and retention of captaincy.

IMO his antics of going home pretending he’s injured and leaving us in the sh!te means he should have been shipped out as ignominiously as Jonas…Jonas was and is a far better example of an exemplary professional than Colo ever was and IMO doesn’t deserve anything but a P45.

…and if anyone thinks he’ll play better alongside Mbemba they are sadly mistaken..Colo has no legs left, no bottle, and no idea whats going on around him..he finds himself alone and in no mans land more often than any other defender we’ve had at newcastle in the last 10 years

  • 36 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:16 PM

What about Charnley’s celebration? Pass the Scotties.

  • 37 Tsunki // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:17 PM

Blackley the problem with spending all our lunch money on strikers is that we will still have the defence of the damned leaking in goals game after game, negating our wonder boys efforts up front. Cue the Pardewite resort of everybody, including said strikers, drifting back to try and plug holes. I’m sure our new obliteration unit Mbemba and the curly-headed ones newly-purchased revived loyalty will strengthen the back line no end (cough) but I’d guess just ONE injury and we are back to square -15.

  • 38 Tsunki // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:19 PM

Sparky I get this uneasy feeling you are not all that keen on our bubbly headed leader of men.

  • 39 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:19 PM

Colo may be 3rd, 4th 5th choice at CB but he’s still better quality cover at CB than any cover we have at full back.

  • 40 sparky55 // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:22 PM

    tsunki…is it that obvious??? 🙂

  • 41 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:24 PM

But could you imagine having two tough tackling, defence minded, tactically and positionally aware full backs to help Mbemba & Co? That’s where Carr should be earning his money by spotting the talent.

  • 42 sparky55 // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:24 PM

Blackley…your comment exactly highlights how such p!ss poor management has left us with such a p!ss poor defence and defensive cover.

  • 43 sparky55 // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:25 PM

and it’s certainly no excuse as to why we should be retaining him.

  • 44 Jack // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:26 PM

I was honestly crying at that point, seeing Charnley so relieved filled me with happiness.

  • 45 Ian Toon // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:28 PM

Catchy- Are you on board with Macca or not?
The only honours Newcastle have won in McClaren’s lifetime have been in what is now the Championship. He, on the other hand, won the League Cup with Middleborough and reached the UEFA Cup Final, as well as a title with FC Twente. I think were lucky to get him and I think Derby will regret sacking him. In any event at least give him time to mold the team in his own image or are you forward planning!

  • 46 check the toastie // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:29 PM

We have Anita or Colback to cover full back. In fact Colback would be a better defensive full back than Haidara.

  • 47 Tsunki // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:30 PM

Sparky I was with you right up until the last paragraph which is unfortunately sloblock.

Colo has nursemaided a collection of rabble filling in as CB’s and LB’s over the last few years, the holes they have created or positions they have wandered aimlessly from have stretched Colo so he appears to be the culprit because he’s the guy in the frame when things are going wrong in defence. This is the classic toonbotherer trap. You should be looking for the guy who ran up the left wing and put in. A shoddy cross that got intercepted, and then sauntered back as the opposition ran like a herd of wildebeest toward our goal. You should be looking for the lost CB who went to mark the wrong guy or was caught out staring at someone they thought they knew in the crowd. You should be looking at the defensive midfielders that were never selected, the ones that would have covered that magical area North of the penalty area. I have many things against our hairy supremo, but rewriting hysteria doesn’t work for me. Atm he’s still our best CB, not saying much, granted, but there you are.

  • 51 Jail for Ashley // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:34 PM

I wasn’t really wanting somebody who can just cover there, I’d like to see a genuine young RB who could have the potential to keep Jaanmat out of the team if hos form dipped, for too long now we have had a situation where no matter how bad a defence plays the same back four is chosen the game after.

  • 52 Belfast // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:35 PM

Aye West Ham are definitely in danger. It would be absolutely hilarious if their first game in their shiny new stadium was in the fizzy pop league haha

  • 53 Jail for Ashley // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:36 PM

Fully agree on Collo, I guess you’re as wretched as me 🙂

  • 54 sparky55 // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:36 PM

Tsunki…guess we’ll agree to disagree then but certainly time will tell because it looks like we won’t get another CB in before the close of the window and if SM thinks the same as you he’ll play Colo alongside Mbemba so we’ll soon see.

My guess is Colo will be a liability and will be found wanting.

  • 55 Tsunki // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:37 PM

Blackley @ 41. – if you were to go back far enough into the annals ( spell checker dont desert me now..) of this blog, you will find me rhyming on day after day about having proper full backs who go in hard, shepherd the wingers to no man’s land and NOT pretend to be the next Cafu carving ditches filled with flames, up the wings. We haven’t had a full back who could run up the line and put in an average cross in a decade, so it did my head in to see Santon, Ferguson, Dummet and his dog attempt to do this and leave the two hapless defenders and a knackered Jonas trying to do their job for them. To do that you have to have a defender and a man in front who have the same ability, and the savvy to switch at the crucial time. It never happened.

  • 56 robmefirst // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:37 PM

    Jail for Ashley

Same, would’ve liked a fresh start with a new captain, but who though? I’m not sure Colback should be a guaranteed starter, Wijnaldum too soon, and de Jong needs to still prove himself here.

  • 57 Tsunki // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:40 PM

Sparky I think the reason Colo will be a weakness will not be because of lack of mobility or skill, it’ll be because as you say he fancies a holiday at his rancho during derby season.

  • 58 magpiesi // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:40 PM

West ham properly regret not renewing big Sams contract yes it was a young team playing but they have no discipline absolutely all over the place.

What a player we nearly signed a few years ago in miagia but he failed his medical hopeless.

I heard its west ham talking to Rondon they will need help up top this season otherwise in the championship with that nice new empty stadium.

  • 59 Jail for Ashley // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:44 PM

Corkypants wears knickers, something not quite right there !

  • 60 jane // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:44 PM

Sam Allardyce gets results even if it isn’t pretty and doesn’t have a lot of resources. in a similar way we may become more aware how well Pardew did this season, it looked as if it went downhill after he left because John Carver did a terrible job (which is probably a big factor) but it will be interesting to see if Steve McClaren does much better than Pardew even though he will have more resources.

  • 61 Ian Toon // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:45 PM

Belfast – the natives are getting restless already. The older fan is not overly taken with leaving the Boleyn behind.

  • 62 sparky55 // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:45 PM

Tsunki…I don’t think SM would put up with any of Colo’s antics like Pardew put up with…one disappearing act and he’ll be gone for sure.

IMO Colo was that defender who didn’t pick up the runner and marked the wrong guy and ran into space where there wasn’t a striker therefore leaving a striker with all the time in the world…he’s just as bad as the rest of them IMO

  • 63 Tsunki // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:45 PM

Tricky one the captain thing. If colo had been signed on for another year and then told sorry son, you’re not captain, we may well have had a sick note or a Sol Campbell deckchair botherer on our hands until his contract wound down.

  • 64 Ian Toon // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:46 PM

  • 67 lesh // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:50 PM

West Ham’s problems could be added to by the concerns that have been raised over the terms attached to the former Olympic stadium. There are calls for an inquiry into the terms of the lease including the fact that they’ll be paid for routine stadium maintenance – including the cost of the nets, posts and corner flags!

I can see other clubs taking an interest as WHU have been given a distinct financial advantage over other clubs and amounting to millions a year!

  • 68 sparky55 // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:50 PM

Tsunki…I agree that was a delicate issue and SM’s probably done what he’s done to make sure Colo doesn’t spit his dummy out and leave us in the lurch whilst we’re so threadbare…so a very brave call indeed but what I don’t get is the contract extension…no need in my book

  • 69 Tsunki // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:51 PM

Sparky – as you say there’s no place to hide if he’s partnering MBemba this year and the onion bag still bulges regularly. I’m inclined to think that any team without Willo in improves their GD by at least 10 goals. And if what we are seeing is SM’s preference for playing from the back, I’d rather see colo striding out and putting that ball into our midfield of spraying it wide than anyone else bar Janmaat atm.

  • 70 lesh // Aug 6, 2015 at 9:52 PM

Have we been linked with Rondon or is young TakeaChancel on the case, tying up the terms of the deal?

  • 74 sparky55 // Aug 6, 2015 at 10:00 PM

tsunki…Yes I agree Colo is far better than anyone we have when carrying the ball forward but I’d rather have a good defender who can’t carry the ball rather than a sh!te defender who can carry the ball because as far as I’m concerned defensive duties means keeping the opposition at bay and carrying the ball out is secondary.

a good defender is a defender who keep’s them oot…a great defender is a defender who keeps them oot and can carry the ball….I’ll settle for a good defender.

I once got an autograph from Jackie Charlton for my son who at the time was a budding centre back..the message Jackie left him with was ‘Keep them lot’ and I think that say’s it all

Didn’t our glorious Prime Minister profess to be a WHU supporter and then a Villa fan? Whoops, he could though be forgiven for his slip, after all both play in claret and blue, sound similar and he was in the middle of an election campaign!
