Poll: Geordie Fans Confident Of Southampton Result

2:53 pm, Saturday, August 8th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 144 Comments

Newcastle fans are surprisingly confident of getting a decent result in our first league game of the season against Southampton tomorrow at St. James Park.

In fact 44% think we will be able to get the season off with a win against a side who finished 7th top of the Premier League last season with 60 points – 21 points more than Newcastle and of course we slumped badly in the second half of last season under interim coach John Carver.

steve-mcclaren-closeup-at-sheffiled-united

Steve McClaren – can he start with a win tomorrow?

After getting only one win in the final 11 games of the season – and that was in the very last game – Newcastle fans have not seen too many wins this year – so it would be great to get all 3 points tomorrow in front of what we expect to be a sold-out St. James’ Park.

There’s still time to vote in our poll, if you haven’t already done so – one vote per reader.

A win tomorrow for the lads would be great.

Think a draw would be a decent enough result seeings as how Southampton are already up to speed

  • 2 Bambams // Aug 8, 2015 at 2:56 PM

Let’s see how Perez or Cisse do with the chances created by Mitrovic! !!
I genuinely believe both Cisse and Perez (great finishers) will get three times as many chances with the offensive players, midfield players we now have

    Imo

    56% think we won’t win.

I bet josh king does well for Bournemouth this season

  • 5 banjax // Aug 8, 2015 at 3:04 PM

Unless the back line is strengthened we will leak goals – hope we score more than we concede which was the same as last season.

  • 6 SUTTY1978 // Aug 8, 2015 at 3:07 PM

Bambams, none of our offensive players have ever had a good record of assists even when playing in weaker leagues, this is why we don’t score many. We buy in goal scorers not creators and the wonder why the goal scorers don’t score!

  • 37 Jail for Ashley // Aug 8, 2015 at 3:43 PM

    Mag52,
From previous, unfortunately I don’t think anything has changed, sure we have better coaches but literally anyone would have been an improvement on Carver, a Ford focus is a huge improvement on a Nissan Micra. We heard from the horses mouth that players are bought for financial purposes rather than with success in mind. I don’t believe that has changed.
    Ashley Out !

  • 38 Munster Mag // Aug 8, 2015 at 3:43 PM

  • 41 Bobbybee // Aug 8, 2015 at 3:52 PM

Come on jail, cheer up marra. When was the last time we bought a country’s Footballer of the year? And another country’s leading goalscorer? Plus a player described independently as ‘the best defender in the country by miles and one of the best young defenders in Europe? THAT’S changed for sure. I understand your hesitation in accepting it, but give it time and enjoy the good bits. 😉

  • 52 Magpie Myles // Aug 8, 2015 at 4:00 PM

Sunderland getting thumped is my highlight of the day so far.
Can see Armstrong getting a fair few goals and then going to the championship for the second half of the season and getting a fair few as well. Think he will be ready in 2 years and then hopefully he can run off mitrovic and work the channels.
Would be good to see some youngsters progress.

  • 53 Jail for Ashley // Aug 8, 2015 at 4:01 PM

    Bobbybee,
I don’t want you to tell me how to behave when I’m responding to somebodies question, your extreme comparison to my saying Jaanmatt could be suspended while STaylor was injured by saying there also might be a plane crash was quite frankly ridiculous. Most go on about Pards as being a terrible manager, maybe he’s not the best, but he hadn’t a chance at Newcastle. Best players sold, basic budget squad with no pace or little quality. He did what he could under the circumstances.
Put at like this hell have a better side at Pallace in his first year than he had the whole time with us. They already have over taken us in quality.

I loved Cabaye, but he blotted his copy book when he went on strike to force his move. Don’t write off the same happening at Palace if Arsenal come calling in january. He let us down and caused upheaval in the changing room. Wouldn’t touch him again with a bargepole and i hope it comes back to bite Pardew’s ass. Make a mug of me once. Shame on you. • 113 lukes26 // Aug 8, 2015 at 5:07 PM

    I don’t understand people sometimes

chase a manager out of town who was manager of the year & then shocked and irate he’s successful elsewhere.

    some magical thinking there

Ed another Austin story. QPR lose as newcastle target fails to shine.

Bobbybee- many have written off Armstrong on the grounds of Adam Campbell being rated by many and just not producing at this level. I have seen Armstrong a couple of times and it seemed to me the only thing lacking was experience. He looks our best forward prospect in years- time will tell.

Palace got outplayed today I thought Norwich created a lot of chances

It puzzles me too. He left good we move on.

  • 118 Bobbybee // Aug 8, 2015 at 5:16 PM

I agree check, but from his earliest appearances in the Academy, he’s displayed an incredible knack for scoring goals. You can’t coach that, you either have it or don’t. He has it in bucketfuls. Too late for me mate, I was convinced ages ago that he’d make the grade. 🙂 Can’t help what my gut tells me – who can? I hope he goes on and blasts Coventry up the league, coz it’s all good for us innit?

  • 119 Noel Worst // Aug 8, 2015 at 5:16 PM

Pardew has always been, remains and will always be a mediocre manager. 38 games will bare this out.

Far from it mate, Looking forward to it, should be a good match.

    James

Didnt see the game. Im just saying Pardew got 32 pts w/ CP and left newcastle w/ 26 pts…which is 58 pts for a season with two teams that were not great

To me, he might have deserved a second manager of the year award

I think pardew’s a perfectionist that likes things a certain way. he’s not the greatest manager in the world, but he’s very good

I think Steve may be a better manager though.

Its often just a matter of having a team that matches your style and system.

  • 123 Bobbybee // Aug 8, 2015 at 5:19 PM

Ian, there’s no comparison with Campbell, Arma’s in a different league. He averages just under a goal a game for our U21’s, England’s U17’s and U18’s. Different class to Campbell matey.

  • 129 JDdubai // Aug 8, 2015 at 5:23 PM

Pards luck continues 🙂 Did anyone see the norwich guys miss at 0-0? 3 yards out in front of goal. And then Jerome’s disallowed goal, v harsh.

Think coventry will be my 3rd team this season after the Heed.

Roll on tomorrow, nervous already. Glad i get to watch every game live over here though have to put up with Gray and Keys.

  • 130 ilovetoon8788 // Aug 8, 2015 at 5:23 PM

We’ll see how good pardew is this season. But palace gave a stronger team overall than us only because their defence is better.

  • 131 will die for the toon army // Aug 8, 2015 at 5:24 PM

Recent players from the Academy & e managers who brought them in.

    Carroll – Chris H
    Krul – Chris H
    Fergie – Chris H
    Ranger – Chris H
    Ameobe – Pardew
    Dummett – Pardew
    Abeid – Pardew
    Bigi – Pardew

    Any one missing add Pliz

  • 132 Ian Toon // Aug 8, 2015 at 5:24 PM

will die for the toon army – I agree that Macca is a good coach. Clearly Armstrong can earn a living as a professional but can he at PL level. He certainly has impressed my father who watched a lot of Academy games over the last few seasons. I’ve only seen him a few times and he looks an instinctive goal scorer with two feet and great positional play coming off defenders.

  • 133 Jib // Aug 8, 2015 at 5:24 PM

  • 135 JackButler // Aug 8, 2015 at 5:24 PM

Armstrong is another player we are pinning our future hopes on alongside Aarons.

Out track recordin with bringing youngsters through if pretty woeful tbh and remember it’s only the first team coaching staff that have changed, Pedro is still the man to oversee the kids!!!

Time will tell I suppose but before people start thinking we’ve a new Shearer on our hands remember it was two goals for Coventry against Wigan

  • 136 Bobbybee // Aug 8, 2015 at 5:24 PM

Guys no more Pardew crap talk. Am glad he left. Mcca bring e glory back home.

Ian Arma is better than Campbell

  • 140 hibbit // Aug 8, 2015 at 5:31 PM

arma should be no were near nufc this season if he is getting game time at coventry…. a good season under his belt with them will do him more good than sitting on the bench for 80 mins a game just let the kid grow it could be worth it in the end

  • 141 Bobbybee // Aug 8, 2015 at 5:32 PM

Jack, agree mate, but you can only play what’s in front of you after all. Plus, he’s a kid playing against men, you can’t ignore that. This is exactly what he needs, a run of first team games in the rough and tumble of the 1st division to knock the rough edges off him. He’ll come back a better player and hopefully, fulfill his destiny. 🙂

  • 142 JamesToon // Aug 8, 2015 at 5:46 PM

New email from McClaren “the season is upon us”

Love this new communication method, feel like part of the club now rather than just “a customer”

I for one (and I hope all the rest of the fan base are as well) am going to be patient with SM, we may well lose tomorrow, but no matter what happens I’ll be right behind him. A new style and philosophy of attacking and attractive football, a whole new coaching staff and new signings, it’s a complete change to the players and may be a shock to the system

    Howay the lads!

  • 143 Jail for Ashley // Aug 8, 2015 at 5:47 PM

    Mag52,
Just as I was starting to warm to you again you come out and say that. Palace had 38% possession with even less in the first half, yes, he wasn’t as bad as some made out but he was a shithouse of a bloke who took that eight year deal knowing full well that he would not be allowed to win anything, his football was dire, we scored four or more goals seven times in his four year reign, three of those were with Houghtons team.

  • 144 davis_toons // Aug 8, 2015 at 8:58 PM

“We buy in goal scorers not creators and the wonder why the goal scorers don’t score!”

TRUE…Have got to do with the HCoache/ Manager as well..how he wanted the team to play.

..direct and play “long hog ball” in the air or “triangular passing” ?

The right players under the right coaches.
