Steve McClaren has just named the starting eleven for the first game of the season against Southampton at St. James’ Park today and it’s a new center-back pairing with Coloccini and Mbemba both starting for Newcastle.
Newcastle (4-2-3-1): Tim Krul; Daryl Janmaat, Chancel Mbemba, Fabricio Coloccini (c), Massadio Haidara; Vurnon Anita, Jack Colback; Moussa Sissoko, Georginio Wijnaldum, Gabriel Obertan; Papiss Cisse
Substitutes: Karl Darlow, Steven Taylor, Cheick Tiote, Siem de Jong, Rolando Aarons, Ayoze Perez, Aleksandar Mitrovic
Southampton (4-2-3-1): Maarten Stekelenburg; Cedric Soares, Jose Fonte (c),Maya Yoshida, Matt Targett; Victor Wanyama, Steven Davis; Sadio Mane, Jay Rodriguez, Dusan Tadic; Graziano Pelle
Substitutes: Paulo Gazzaniga, Cuco Martina, Steven Caulker, James Ward-Prowse, Harrison Reed, Juanmi, Shane Long
Referee: Craig Pawson (South Yorkshire)
With Mike Williamson not even on the bench it does look like Mike will be sold before September.
It’s also interesting that Cheick Tiote is on the bench for the first time and we could well be keeping the Ivorian for this season.
The team will play in their familiar 4-2-3-1 formation with Jack Colback and Vurnon Anita the two holding midfielders, and Papiss Cisse keeps his place up front.
This is a bold move by McClaren to play Colo and Mbemba at the back with Colo having not played in pre-season, and Mbemba playing only in the second half last week against Borussia Monchengladbach.
Let’s hope we can play well and even get all 3 points.
44% think we can win this game today.
