Coloccini And Mbemba Start For Newcastle

nufcSouthampton badge

Steve McClaren has just named the starting eleven for the first game of the season against Southampton at St. James’ Park today and it’s a new center-back pairing with Coloccini and Mbemba both starting for Newcastle.

Newcastle (4-2-3-1): Tim Krul; Daryl Janmaat, Chancel Mbemba, Fabricio Coloccini (c), Massadio Haidara; Vurnon Anita, Jack Colback; Moussa Sissoko, Georginio Wijnaldum, Gabriel Obertan; Papiss Cisse
Substitutes: Karl Darlow, Steven Taylor, Cheick Tiote, Siem de Jong, Rolando Aarons, Ayoze Perez, Aleksandar Mitrovic

Southampton (4-2-3-1): Maarten Stekelenburg; Cedric Soares, Jose Fonte (c),Maya Yoshida, Matt Targett; Victor Wanyama, Steven Davis; Sadio Mane, Jay Rodriguez, Dusan Tadic; Graziano Pelle
Substitutes: Paulo Gazzaniga, Cuco Martina, Steven Caulker, James Ward-Prowse, Harrison Reed, Juanmi, Shane Long

Referee: Craig Pawson (South Yorkshire)

With Mike Williamson not even on the bench it does look like Mike will be sold before September.

It’s also interesting that Cheick Tiote is on the bench for the first time and we could well be keeping the Ivorian for this season.

The team will play in their familiar 4-2-3-1 formation with Jack Colback and Vurnon Anita the two holding midfielders, and Papiss Cisse keeps his place up front.

This is a bold move by McClaren to play Colo and Mbemba at the back with Colo having not played in pre-season, and Mbemba playing only in the second half last week against Borussia Monchengladbach.

Let’s hope we can play well and even get all 3 points.

44% think we can win this game today.

Aarons for Ober and it would have been a decent line-up.

So who won’t get a game from De Jong, Aarons, Perez, and Mitrovic?

Can’t complain with that selection really.

There’s nothing glaringly wrong about it.

Glad Anita is starting. He’s been our best playing in pre season.

Obertan? Oh Dear. Every manager he has played for has said that he is great in Training. He is apparently a world-beater, and this is why he gets selected. HOWEVER, when it comes to games, he disappears! When will they learn this? Do they not look at old footage?

Our defence has been a worry but soton’s is weak too. They lack schneiderlins cover and have no alderweireld or Clyne.

    Bertrand is also not playing.

Their attack and creativity is good but if we can be winning the ball and hitting them fast our attack has a good chance of breaking them down.

Just need to not let them have the ball.

I don’t mind Obertan, opponents would not have guessed it, and the bench can really change things…with options.

    Lets see!
    Prediction 3 – 2 to either side 😉
    OK…NUFC to win 🙂

Predicted earlier that if Obertan starts ahead of Aarons we will loose, sticking with that unless Obertan gets injured in the first 10 mins. Disappointed Mitro isn’t starting. Just can’t see anyone in that line up creating any chances or holding the ball at the top end of the pitch. Also Pelle will beast Colo

I think fitness played a big part in the starting 11. Give it a week or 2 and think we will see Mitrovic/Cisse, Aarons/Obertan and possibly SDJ/Colback with Wini dropping back.

No Willo in the squad is the best news.

Concern remembering how Pelle bossed us last season vs Colo and Dummett, lot riding on Mbemba fronting up to him as Colo no chance. Plus their 2 quick guys either side…
