Coloccini And Mbemba Start For Newcastle

Steve McClaren has just named the starting eleven for the first game of the season against Southampton at St. James’ Park today and it’s a new center-back pairing with Coloccini and Mbemba both starting for Newcastle.

Newcastle (4-2-3-1): Tim Krul; Daryl Janmaat, Chancel Mbemba, Fabricio Coloccini (c), Massadio Haidara; Vurnon Anita, Jack Colback; Moussa Sissoko, Georginio Wijnaldum, Gabriel Obertan; Papiss Cisse
Substitutes: Karl Darlow, Steven Taylor, Cheick Tiote, Siem de Jong, Rolando Aarons, Ayoze Perez, Aleksandar Mitrovic

Southampton (4-2-3-1): Maarten Stekelenburg; Cedric Soares, Jose Fonte (c),Maya Yoshida, Matt Targett; Victor Wanyama, Steven Davis; Sadio Mane, Jay Rodriguez, Dusan Tadic; Graziano Pelle
Substitutes: Paulo Gazzaniga, Cuco Martina, Steven Caulker, James Ward-Prowse, Harrison Reed, Juanmi, Shane Long

Referee: Craig Pawson (South Yorkshire)

With Mike Williamson not even on the bench it does look like Mike will be sold before September.

It’s also interesting that Cheick Tiote is on the bench for the first time and we could well be keeping the Ivorian for this season.

The team will play in their familiar 4-2-3-1 formation with Jack Colback and Vurnon Anita the two holding midfielders, and Papiss Cisse keeps his place up front.

This is a bold move by McClaren to play Colo and Mbemba at the back with Colo having not played in pre-season, and Mbemba playing only in the second half last week against Borussia Monchengladbach.

Let’s hope we can play well and even get all 3 points.

44% think we can win this game today.

Thats the best bench i’ve seen us have for years

  • 2 Sliema // Aug 9, 2015 at 12:33 PM

Aarons for Ober and it would have been a decent line-up.

  • 3 Ron Knee // Aug 9, 2015 at 12:33 PM

So who won’t get a game from De Jong, Aarons, Perez, and Mitrovic?

  • 4 Noel Worst // Aug 9, 2015 at 12:33 PM

Well firly certain that’s a team nobody predicted. Mbemba and Colo a pleasant surprise.

    Very strong bench.

    Southampton line up:
    22 Stekelenburg
    02 Soares
    06 Fonte
    03 Yoshida
    33 Targett
    08 Davis
    12 Wanyama
    11 Tadic
    10 Mané
    09 Rodriguez

  • 6 colwell // Aug 9, 2015 at 12:35 PM

Pelle and Rodriguez starting lets see if playing 2 short CB will work or not

  • 7 LGFUAD21 // Aug 9, 2015 at 12:35 PM

Can’t complain with that selection really.

There’s nothing glaringly wrong about it.

Glad Anita is starting. He’s been our best playing in pre season.

  • 8 Clarke_M // Aug 9, 2015 at 12:35 PM

Obertan? Oh Dear. Every manager he has played for has said that he is great in Training. He is apparently a world-beater, and this is why he gets selected. HOWEVER, when it comes to games, he disappears! When will they learn this? Do they not look at old footage?

  • 9 TudorCrisps // Aug 9, 2015 at 12:35 PM

Zero goals in the first half our goals will come after 70 minutes after subs predicting an De Jong goal

  • 18 LGFUAD21 // Aug 9, 2015 at 12:38 PM

Our defence has been a worry but soton’s is weak too. They lack schneiderlins cover and have no alderweireld or Clyne.

    Bertrand is also not playing.

Their attack and creativity is good but if we can be winning the ball and hitting them fast our attack has a good chance of breaking them down.

Just need to not let them have the ball.

Anita and Colback will frighten the life out of that Southampton team, ahem!!! neat and tidy thats about it, and about 20 stone between them?????? the bench looks terrific, hoping they can get us over the line eh Steve.

  • 27 bosamuelson // Aug 9, 2015 at 12:40 PM

I don’t mind Obertan, opponents would not have guessed it, and the bench can really change things…with options.

    OK…NUFC to win 🙂

Predicted earlier that if Obertan starts ahead of Aarons we will loose, sticking with that unless Obertan gets injured in the first 10 mins. Disappointed Mitro isn’t starting. Just can’t see anyone in that line up creating any chances or holding the ball at the top end of the pitch. Also Pelle will beast Colo

I think fitness played a big part in the starting 11. Give it a week or 2 and think we will see Mitrovic/Cisse, Aarons/Obertan and possibly SDJ/Colback with Wini dropping back.

No Willo in the squad is the best news.

Concern remembering how Pelle bossed us last season vs Colo and Dummett, lot riding on Mbemba fronting up to him as Colo no chance. Plus their 2 quick guys either side…

  • 45 colwell // Aug 9, 2015 at 12:46 PM

Tiote will probably start next week hopefully McClaren gets him being his old self again much better than Colback is.

  • 46 JackButler // Aug 9, 2015 at 12:46 PM

Can’t argue with that line up given the pre season we have had, think it will see a workman like performance and for once we at least have some very good options from the bench

  • 47 Mister Tuff // Aug 9, 2015 at 12:46 PM

I was warming to Wally – but his selection is a bit of an experiment. F***ing Obertron – if you pardon my expression. How the hell does he get a start. Colo starting as well – clearly the application of the famous Amazonian poultice – herbs, chicken entrails and the spittle from the Lesser spotted Amazonian tree frog has been applied to his achilles tendon and fixed it.

People are saying what a bench – true but several of them should be starting the game- I suppose there are options now if it goes belly up, and it probably will.
Still sticking to my 3 -1 defeat.

  • 48 SUTTY1978 // Aug 9, 2015 at 12:47 PM

Just seen West Hams Team v Liverpool. Makes me feel happier about our team, think they’re gonna get hammered today

  • 49 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 9, 2015 at 12:47 PM

Impressive lineup and bench. Obertan will probably get man of the match today. He can be useful.

Would swap Colback with De Jong and Obertan with Aarons. 2 good looking teams.

I think Watford will finish in the top 10 this season. I knew they’d give Everton a tough game.

Man Utd are looking poor. Our squad is probably stronger than theirs. Lawrenson’s right.

  • 50 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Aug 9, 2015 at 12:47 PM

    No goofy. No Willo. Great.
Squidward on the wing, however, worries me. I know he isnt that old, but he seems to have been around for ever, and has done very little. SM might be his last chance manager. Would be great if he starts producing, but i have massive doubts.

  • 51 kimbo // Aug 9, 2015 at 12:47 PM

Anita in team means we will get hammered. Cannot believe any body who watches football thinks he is a good player. Obertan starting ….I now know the Wally with a brolly is a fool and will be gone by Xmas.

  • 52 ilovetoon8788 // Aug 9, 2015 at 12:47 PM

strongest bench i’ve seen in a very long time.

i really hope Obertan delivers what Mclaren sees in him that he thrusts him straight in the starting XI against Southampton.

i hope he produces a performance where proves us all wrong. very surprised though. excited about the match with the new centre back pairing who have barely featured in pre-season.

  • 53 GloucesterGeordie // Aug 9, 2015 at 12:47 PM

Agree with the majority re obertan and the bench! Once it’s settled and the philosophy is drilled into them it could be promising with a few more additions and some deadwood shifted.

No rivière on the bench is he injured? Haven’t caught alot of pre season

  • 54 TacoFlavoredKisses ForMyBen-arfa // Aug 9, 2015 at 12:48 PM

your a fool if you think Anita is a useless players.

with a more possession oriented system his simple game is extremely crucial for us. probably the most important midfield player for Mclaren.

  • 56 SUTTY1978 // Aug 9, 2015 at 12:49 PM

Insane bemch, but hate seeing Obertan and Cisse again.

Is Sissoko on the wing ?

If Mclaren is brave enough to start Mbemba, why not Mitrovic as well ?

Hoping for a good game and win though.

  • 64 Goofy // Aug 9, 2015 at 12:53 PM

No Williamson or Goofy (yeah it’s my username):-) Really atting minded bench, was expecting draw but am a bit more optimistic now. Anita is a good player, can’t understand the slating he takes on here.

  • 65 Bambams // Aug 9, 2015 at 12:53 PM

    Obertan. ….Didn’t see that coming

    Anita and Colback…….as above

    SDJ mustn’t be fit…..

Cisse mmmmm….. Mitrovic would of started for me ahead of Cisse.

Aarons off the bench second half for obertan

    Mitrovic for Cisse.

Come on Toon let’s get a result

    Wijny fog goalscorer

  • 67 Slank // Aug 9, 2015 at 12:55 PM

Not surprised about Colo but surprised and pleased about Mbemba.

The inclusion of Oberton suggests that Sissoko may have a free role.

I will be very surprised if De Jong, Aarons and Mitovic don’t appear in the second half. I’m thinking that Mitrovic will come on to batter the tiring Soton central defenders and Aarons to torment their fullbacks.

  • 68 curmon // Aug 9, 2015 at 12:55 PM

McClaren knew Obertan from his Manu days. I just hope it is not the old pals act. Very disappointed if it is because Aarons or Perez should be starting not Obertan

  • 69 Blofal // Aug 9, 2015 at 12:55 PM

Very surprised Mbemba is starting and also very happy!

And that is one fine looking bench. Good to see Tiote fit.

Never fear my armchair friends. Old Blackley will be here after the game to bring you his post match assessment and analysis.

  • 71 Noel Worst // Aug 9, 2015 at 12:56 PM

Obertan has nothing to prove to me, certainly no more than a lot of players. Best player for a 6 game period last season, has shown he can be a good weapon and Black might just be able to tap in to his mind and get him right mentally, so he can produce consistently. Think he suffers from reverse Halo Effect.

  • 72 Mister Tuff // Aug 9, 2015 at 12:56 PM

Bit lightweight in midfield – whilst Anita played well pre season -I reckon Soton will thwart our latest tactic of playing everying from the back to him to distribute. Clatter him a few times and chase him down and it’ll be hoofball.
If you excuse me I have to say it again F***ing Obertron – I despair.

  • 73 LGFUAD21 // Aug 9, 2015 at 12:58 PM

    Ilovetoon

Amen. Anita had been our best player in pre season. In a possession based team he is the link up between everything.

You have to be paying attention to see it but he was the engine at Ajax with the way he kept the ball moving around.

Hence why I said he was the Dutch Pirlo when he arrived. That may not have come to be true but his role is very similar without the champagne long balls v

  • 74 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 9, 2015 at 12:58 PM

Anita deserves to be in the team. He has a footballing brain. Good interceptor and passer. Versatile. I’d sign Leroy Fer to replace Colback. Colback isn’t the greatest player.

  • 75 Noel Worst // Aug 9, 2015 at 12:58 PM

    Curmon

Yeah, apart from McClaren hadn’t been a part of Man Utd for almost a decade before Obertan arrived….

  • 76 manxpie // Aug 9, 2015 at 12:59 PM

Good line up that and very strong bench strange that the main stayers in pre season aren’t even in the squad maybe that’s who steve was saying weren’t good enough, hopefully this will be obertans final chance and if he doesn’t perform he’s out and I hope that’s wat steve had told him

  • 77 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 9, 2015 at 12:59 PM

At last, Mike Williamson is not in the squad. It’s about bloody time. Watch us do much better this season because he’s not here.

  • 78 Mister Tuff // Aug 9, 2015 at 12:59 PM

Blackley – you need to get to the ground asap and arrest Wally (citizens arrest) for that team selection.

  • 79 LGFUAD21 // Aug 9, 2015 at 12:59 PM

Willo and krul are the hoofers in the team. Willo just hasn’t got the brain.

Colo will always prefer bringing the ball out himself or playing Long the ground.

  • 80 Lindisfarne // Aug 9, 2015 at 1:01 PM

I think Obertan can be useful on the counter him and Sissoko is rapid pace in the wide areas

  • 87 SUTTY1978 // Aug 9, 2015 at 1:06 PM

Neither of the def mods are incisive enough passers, just go side to side or backwards. Makes possession based football a bit pointless as we don’t actually get anywhere unless someone hoofs it!

  • 88 beefman13 // Aug 9, 2015 at 1:07 PM

I know its the first game of the season but surely young Aarons and Perez deserved a start, Colo starts after not kicking a ball in pre season, am sure they see this fella is seen as some sort of Bobby Moore, mind blowing, Mclaren wants to start the season running but for me he could have been more positive from the get go, lets see what happens, fingers crossed.

Why isnt De Jong playing, got plenty of time in pre season, Arrons could easily have started and Perez, what is so clever about Anita n Colback lightweight, and played in our pathetic team for most of last season, so no the starting eleven today is not one i would have picked, i really dont think Anita deserves a start because of a couple of canny games at the end of the season. anyways they are there to prove me wrong, hope they do.

  • 103 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 9, 2015 at 1:13 PM

    Blody Obertron —-I despair.

  • 107 The Newcastle Armchair // Aug 9, 2015 at 1:14 PM

Smart not to start Aarons, let Obertan have a runaround and bring in Aartons on 70 as he’s just came back from a minor injury

  • 108 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 9, 2015 at 1:14 PM

Don’t forget, we had a lot of injuries last season. Cabella, Abeid and Marveaux should make the bench in a few weeks.

  • 111 Nufc-83 // Aug 9, 2015 at 1:15 PM

No Williamson and Gouffran is great but really wtf is he doing not playing Aarons when he is clearly ready and miles better than Obertan. The only choice should have been Aarons or Perez.

Cisse imo is totally useless and is one of the worst footballers i have ever seen wear the shirt, granted he has a knack for getting goals but his overall game is that of league 1 or 2 standard at best. Mitro must start if fit but apparently got a knock so i will cut him some slack on that choice.

  • 112 JackButler // Aug 9, 2015 at 1:15 PM

How can anyone say that Mitrovic deserves a start?

He’s played what? 20 minutes for us?

New manager, new coaches some new players but we need to be realistic. Cisse is the only proven goal scorer we have

what are the chances of marveux getting the chance to play under mcclaren

  • 123 SUTTY1978 // Aug 9, 2015 at 1:18 PM

McLoven said he wanted to make a statement, the statement made is a negative, safety first statement of defensive minded football, with the option to change it later on to try and Nick one. Problem is we will concede, without doubt, so changes are then made to try and rescue something, which leads to the defence being further exposed.

  • 125 Noel Worst // Aug 9, 2015 at 1:19 PM

Anita didn’t play most of last season, even if he did you’d be judging a fish by it’s ability to climb a tree under the last two managers, and Colback was one of our consistent performers, he just needs a bit more defensive discipline.

Hope we press high from the get-go, like we did for periods against Gladbach.

Mclaren has fallen victim to the biggest con ever

  • 132 Nufc-83 // Aug 9, 2015 at 1:22 PM

With 1 up top i cant see how Cisse can play as his link up play is none existent and you need someone who can win duals and hold up the play to go up top on their own. We will now become predictable as Southampton will not worry about us going from back to front quickly as Cisse wont be able to hold the ball.

Southampton will be able to do the opposite and when under pressure can fire it up to Pelle who will bring others in and stretch us.

Colo had a bad season but every mistake willo made you would then find a way to blame colo thats what makes you an idiot. If you actually had a view based on colo’s actual faults at least people would think your not a troll.

Colo has been oustanding in some past seasons for us and if he captures half of that form will be our best cb by a mile.

With one up top it all depends on how he is supported from midfield, un Pardew Cisse was isolated every single game as the midfield sat back because of his negative approach, I think with SM things will be different and when the side settles down the likes of Wini, de Jong, Aarons Sissoko etc etc will all offer the support a lone striker needs

If Pardew was still here then I’d be worried as well, be he’s long gone along with Carver and Stone

  • 208 2_goal_tino // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:04 PM

Haha… one goal and the doom has already set in for some on here. There have been very encouraging signs in this half.

Southampton are no mugs and we have actually had much more of the game. They have had one chance and scored. We are playing a CB pairing where 1 has played 0 minutes in pre-season and the other 30 minutes and they’ve never played together before. That goal doesn’t mean they are bad, they will get stronger once they build up an understanding.

COLO almost SCORE in a Corner Kick…I cant believe people are questioning his Contract…

  • 217 LGFUAD21 // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:09 PM

Despite the disappointing scoreline I don’t think anybody can watch this and say it’s not already a better performance that 95% of last season.

We are creating chances. We are holding on to the ball. We are building I’m the back.

With a well oiled defence, a strong more bullish forward (Mitrovic) and a bit more composure and bite on the right wing and we’d be a half decent team.

  • 218 ilovetoon8788 // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:09 PM

    Noel

Actually for the Rodriguez chance. colo was well positioned to cover for a ball in and in case Haidara was beaten and had his body in the correct position.

I think more people should put their emotions aside and realise that Mbemba and janmaat were the ball watchers for that chance. Thankfully it went wide.

  • 221 Sir Braveheart // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:11 PM

Some people on here are like children. Its all or nothing.

Either we’re going to do amazing or we’re doomed to misery and relegation. It’s like children in the playground “I hate him” then next day “we’re best friends “. Kids have that all or nothing approach, they haven’t developed a way of rationalising that things are on a spectrum, and theres room for something between good and bad.

We’ve srarted well, theres promising signs and theres also concerns. Thats football for you. Doesn’t mean we’re in for a rough time or that we’ll be hugely successful. The reality is there will be ups and downs.

His issue is his lack of strength and movement.

He’s had some poor touches but if you go back and watch every goal he’s scored he has demonstrated a lot of brilliant touches.

But nobody has been that bad.

  • 257 bobby mango // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:21 PM

    @lgfaud

With a well oiled defence, a strong more bullish forward (Mitrovic) and a bit more composure and bite on the right wing and we’d be a half decent team.

    Don’t need much then!

I’d be tempted to bring De Jong and Aarons on for Anita and Obertan. Drop Wijn deeper and use sdj’s aerial ability.
Then replace bring Mitro on for Cisse a bit later.

Only issue is Aaron’s won’t offer the needed protection to Haidara but it’s not he’s getting that from obertan and we don’t have any other options either at lw or lb.

  • 258 LGFUAD21 // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:21 PM

    Jamseyd

    In my opinion

Moussa, Gini have looked fired up.

Janmaat, anita, Colback, colo, Mbemba have all been decent.

    Haidara has been inconsistent.

Obertan has left something to be desired.

Cisse has been pretty absent and missed a few chances. He’s also taken some too and obviously got the goal.

    Overall we look alright.

I’d say we nee a bit of strength up front if they are playing alone. It’d be nice to have more threat on the left to match Moussa.

Given a run in the team together I think colo and Mbemba will develop a decent partnership. There may be an issue with the lack of height.

Mbemba seems to love attacking the ball and will dribble out which is great to see. Pushes the whole team forward.

The key thing is that we are getting bodies in the box.

  • 259 catchy in norway // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:22 PM

hidara and rolando were our best players in pre season, get rolando on

  • 260 Noel Worst // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:22 PM

We’ve perhaps shading it and I’m glad to report I was wrong and it hasn’t taken Sissoko dropping to the bench to liven him up – our best player that half.

Definite improvements in our system and it’s nice that the thoguht that some of them aren’t putting in the effort hasn’t crossed my mind.

Haidara not having the greatest game, but I’m not being as hasty as some, it is after all the first match of the season!

Cisse is an enigma. Sissoko (a)nd Obertan (1) have given him chances to make the right move and apply the finish, but he’s either been too slow or made the wrong move, then a deflected cross he reads perfectly…

  • 261 Thump // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:22 PM

We’ve played quite well, but Obertan needs to do one. He’s largely to blame for their goal (drifted in and left Haidara to mark), though Colo really needs to start talking to Mbemba.

  • 262 will die for the toon army // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:22 PM

Haidara has e worst stage freight than Obertan. Kid is playing well.

I am enjoying watching football again! Holy moley what’s going on

Colo and Mbemba will be a good partnership once they settle. Anita is actually doing ok. Obertan and Hiadara should of had Cedric sent off by now though which is disappointing they haven’t…I’d say Obertan switched with Aaron’s by the 60th minute

  • 266 2_goal_tino // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:23 PM

LGFUAD- Exactly. We are playing a good team and have more than held our own. We aren’t great defensively and lack the final pass and creativity when we get in the final third. But unlike some on this blog who view this as us being doomed … I think it is pretty much the same for every team who will finish 8-15th.

One thing is for sure…This is infinitely more assured than last year.

  • 267 ilovetoon8788 // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:23 PM

its looking very promising. we have not been able to be on par with southampton the last 2 seasons. and now we are neck and neck with them.

we’ve had better possession and better all round display. this can only get better. its very congested in the middle and players like De Jong & Widjnaldum won’t get into the game.

i think it will be down to Aarons if we can get all 3 points. i think he’s going to terrorize them.

  • 268 TheToonKing // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:24 PM

Wijnaldum needs to be more involved I think.

After his chance he’s gone missing a bit.

  • 269 Mister Tuff // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:24 PM

Half time reached – evens -so far – now Wally and Cathro can revert to Master plan A – Aarons and Mitrovich on.
I have to revise my initial prediction of a 3 -1 defeat.
Now I’m going for a 3 -1 win. Brace by Mitrovich.

Better football than last season but some defensive worries still evident.

I cant believe people are slamming him.

Ohh…tell me who did not mark their man and let in the 1st goal?

Let me tell people that doesn’t watch the game.. it was Mbemba and Janmaat.

  • 279 Slank // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:30 PM

Aarons needs to come on and run at Cedric who is a red card waiting to happen.

    In the second half:

    Mitrovic for Cisse
    Aarons for Obertan
    De Jong for Colback

  • 280 Nufc-83 // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:30 PM

Colo and mbemba look ok to me but just need to develop understanding. Haidara is too raw and needs to be a back up at the minute. We need a composed established LB and get Aarons on.

  • 281 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:30 PM

Well surprise surprise Sissoko playing well in his CORRECT position on the wing with plenty of space to run into so can people stop saying put him in the middle the argument should be over now

We are actually looking good some of our 1 touch passing moves have been great to watch we rarely played like this under Pardew and Carver I have been very entertained thats for sure !

Think bringing Aarons on will result in a red card for their full back

We could do with upgrading our left back Haidara is decent going forward but is all over the place at the back

  • 282 Robby Bobson // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:30 PM

  • 283 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:30 PM

Coloccini and Sissoko are playing the best at the moment. Haidara, Obertan and Colback are the weak links. Colback doesn’t do much and just plays short passes. Shaqiri, Van Dijk, Berahino and Kolorov are needed.

  • 284 Robby Bobson // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:31 PM

Thought Gabriel Obertan has done OK, tracking back when needed and taking on players backing his speed. Not got the ability to put it in the box with his left foot which is a down side.

Haidara, is getting up and down the pitch OK, and looking good, I just wish Aarons was on as they work so well together.

Mbemba has a few awesome tackles, and I think his height will become less of a problem against other teams. Would be nice if the potential incoming defender would be taller so we have the options of speed, technique and strength in CB depending on the opponents. Time will tell.

Gini missed a chance very similar to one of the goals he took in pre-season. He got a little bit down after that and I think McClaren will have a chat to him at HT to say don’t worry about it go get the next one. Expect more from him next half.

Sissoko, looks to have new meaning to his game. Looking very competent. An animal with the scent of the Saints 🙂

Colback, just being Colback really not heard too much from him. Broken up play pretty well when needed.

Janmaat again showing the form of his first season. A good player for fantasy football teams.

I noticed some really nice triangles between Sissoko, Janmaat and ?? I think COlback on at least one occasion.

    Colo is looking pretty controlling

    Cisse also looking OK.

  • 329 ronaldo aarons // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:44 PM

That 6/7 game winning run last year was mainly because we had obertan on the right and aarons/ameobi on the left with Sissoko bombing on through the middle. There’s a player in pbertan but he has some sort of confidence or mentality issues.

That’s what I like about mbemba just then v Rodriguez. Makes such a change seeing players just run past our defenders with ease.

  • 330 2_goal_tino // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:45 PM

@ilovetoon – undoubtedly, primarily because he doesn’t have a left foot so when on the left he always has to cut back inside on to his right foot… this completely negates his primary attribute which is pace because he has to stop and change direction.

  • 331 ilovetoon8788 // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:45 PM

West ham 2 up against arsenal. Lol

  • 332 Noel Worst // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:47 PM

Wiji been poor since his goal. Keeps getting it trapped under his feet.

  • 333 SUTTY1978 // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:47 PM

So many pundits claiming cech is the best signing of the summer, two complete howlers from him for the two West Ham goals!

  • 334 Noel Worst // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:47 PM

    Needs to calm doon!

  • 335 LGFUAD21 // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:47 PM

Gini is flagging a bit now.

  • 336 ronaldo aarons // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:48 PM

Sorry my previous post didn’t make sense. I basically mean it’s nice to see a defender do well 1 on 1 rather than the usual seeing players run past our defenders with ease.

  • 337 LGFUAD21 // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:49 PM

    Ronaldo.

    You are right.

Obertan is a frustrating watch but last season we needed is directness.

At least he runs at people and towards goal.

  • 338 ronaldo aarons // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:49 PM

What a pass from krul lol!?

Obertan’s step over then, justrealised he does so few compared to his younger days.

  • 341 davetoon // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:50 PM

@pspelectrical – you need to use a browser plugin called https://hola.org/ to give you an English IP

  • 342 ilovetoon8788 // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:50 PM

If Southampton can’t handle obertan. Aarons will slaughter them on the left.

    Re: radio Newcastle.

Never available on line for match-day because it is streamed via NUFC.co.uk.
However, for some reason, even that NEVER works for the first match of the season.

    HWTL

  • 344 ronaldo aarons // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:53 PM

    Lg
Yes every team needs that and just him playing will usually force the opposition back a few yards. I still back obertan to come good, I will criticise his performances when needed but unlike most others I give him credit when it’s due. Think we could do with aarons and mitrovic very soon.

  • 345 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:53 PM

I always hate it when shane long plays us.

He always seems to skin us.

We can’t loose anita. His style is critical to how mcclaren wants us to play.

  • 351 davetoon // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:55 PM

  • 353 gorgonzola ( former Pecorino former to gorgonzola) // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:56 PM

By far our best player Sissoko.

    Best work rate causing problems….

Kiss really needs to up his touch, something he has had a problem with for a long time. Bring Perez on and Mitrovic where are they? And some Aarons to test old legs in the second half.

  • 354 Noel Worst // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:56 PM

Silly things like that bodged return to Janmaat from a throwing are what irritate me about Cisse. Careless.

  • 358 Noel Worst // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:58 PM

Anita played exactly how he did for Ajax today, dropping deep between the CBs and did very well.

    This is enjoyable stuff!

  • 359 LGFUAD21 // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:58 PM

    Yeh.

Gini will take a while getting used to the intensity for a full 90.

Never enjoy tiote just back from injury even if I do agree with keeping him. He always takes a few games to get up and running.

  • 360 ilovetoon8788 // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:59 PM

Anita deep role and recycling possession from there was crucial to our shape.

  • 361 ronaldo aarons // Aug 9, 2015 at 2:59 PM

We must have close to 60% possession this match, unimaginable last year.

  • 362 Noel Worst // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:00 PM

One of the biggest criticisms I had for Pardew’s tactics was the lack on pressing, especially in our defensive third. Looks like nothing has changed.

Watching that build up I was absolutely horrified, screaming at the screen for them to get close. But no, they just have Southampton all the time they wanted.

  • 396 LGFUAD21 // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:13 PM

I know we all wanted to see Mitrovic but I think it may have been better leaving cisse on and putting Aarons on instead.

I think he is vital to the way mcclaren wants to play.

Definitely tiredness setting in which you’d expect this early in the season.

Teams that tend to start the season with no signs of fatigue after 90 mins tend to fall away towards the end.

Obertan, colback, wijnaldum, Anita and Mbemba all stood out today

  • 429 Nufc-83 // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:26 PM

Overall a good performance that gives plenty of positives but for me the bad points are:
Cisse terrible overall game as expected but as usual knack of goals.
Oberton great cross for goal but still overall useless.
Haidara not even close to being ready for 1st team LB. Priority position for me is LB as Dummett is so bad going forward its a joke.

  • 430 TheToonKing // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:26 PM

All things considering I’m happy with this 1 point.

We were probably the better team, especially first half.

New boys had a decent showing. Overall I liked Mbemba best today, for his first game, great assured performance.

Kind of cheap goals to give away, but again, Southampton are a good team, first game of the season….happy with the draw.

Now let’s beat Swansea with the first game jitters gone…..will be a really though game, they played good yesterday.

  • 431 toon kk // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:26 PM

  • 432 Noel Worst // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:26 PM

A breathless match. Thoroughly entertaining but disappointed we didn’t win.

Major problem is our aerial ability at the back and allowing crosses to come in under no pressure.

Anita’s injury changed the complexion of the match. Had he remained uninjured I feel we’d have won.

Ultimately an encouraging opener, but I always feel we should win everybody bar the big boys at our place.

  • 433 toonbrother // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:27 PM

I have a feeling Pardew feigned interest in colo just to sucker Mclaren into giving him a new contract

he is the WORST defender in the league

  • 434 ronaldo aarons // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:27 PM

More than deserved that draw, feel quite hard done by actually as Southampton didn’t deserve a point in my opinion. Why can’t we just go get another defender to go with mbemba. Someone like kamil glik would be ideal, if not go for rudiger or even Douglas.

Haidara would be better if he worked on his positioning. He needs to understand the right times to push forward. I agree though. I would rather have a better player in there at the moment.

  • 462 mickalfas // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:34 PM

It might confirm what we need now,if it wasn’t clear before
    Rudiger now!
I read in the northern echo Collo got a 5 year contract, wtf!! I despair

  • 463 Novocastrian66 // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:34 PM

It was a good match. I thought we edged it and deserved to win. Loads of positives from the game. Southampton were long ball merchants with Pelle Their fulcrum. We struggled to contain him. Overall disappointed we didn’t win, the defence is Still weak.

  • 464 toonbrother // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:34 PM

We do not need a striker
    We have cisse who’s brilliant
We have Riviere who just needs time,
De Jong and mitovic havent achieved a fraction of their potential

What we need is a CENTRAL DEFENDER so we can retire Colocini for good

  • 465 davetoon // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:34 PM

@James we will need to improve and if Anita is not back we will look a lot more static with both Colback and Tiote in the middle.

  • 466 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:35 PM

Losing Anita lost us the midfield battle which then enabled them to take control

Tiote does not have the brain to play in the position as you need to be able to make quick passes hes never been able to do this its not fitness its just no his game !!

    Thought Colback done well today

Must admit though enjoyed the game a lot played some good stuff

If we can get a left back , another centre half and a pacy forward then we could be cooking

  • 467 JackButler // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:35 PM

Haidara needs to close down his man quicker to stop the cross, but saying that both goals went unchallenged, Mbemba and colo split for the first and Jannmatt was away with the fairies for the second

  • 468 JDdubai // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:36 PM

Good point, played well until everyone was knackered.

If Anita out I would acutally put Colo as DM and have Saylor CB with Mbemba. Extra height at the back, and Colo is suited to dropping in to pick up the ball as Anita was doing – think Tiote is still a few games away from starting.

Mbemba looks a player, but he needs a 6ft4 brute next to him, sadly that wont happen now Colo is signed on again.

    Wini will be good,
    Obertan improved,
    Sissoko was excellent
    Mitovic should never tackle
    Colback excellent again, heroic defending

Overall happy with the point but more so the performance – when we are fitter we need to make it a 90 minute thing.

Wish Aarons had come on instead of SDJ, we need legs out there.,

  • 469 toonbrother // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:36 PM

The scary thing is that was the best colocinni we’ve seen in a long time
The ease with which marne went past him was soul destroying

This is the man you gave a new contract to mclaren!!!
You’ve made a terrible mistake mate

  • 470 midweek weekend // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:37 PM

i felt the first half we played really well, unlucky not to win in the end, their goals where really disappointing and we look quite poor in the air, but overall many positives, once we get a fully match fit mitrovic, arrons, and even de jong i think we’ll be seeing a lot more goals from wijnaldum, 2-2 a fair result.

  • 471 JackButler // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:37 PM

    toonbrother

you’re anti colo rants are really, really boring now

  • 472 Slank // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:37 PM

Fair result. Southampton could have easily put it beyond our reach late in the second half.

    Of the new boys:

Chancel: Got very much better as the game went on.
Gini: Excellent. Proper box to box midfielder.
Mitrovic: didn’t have enough time but sufficient to get a yellow.

As others have remarked, Anita’s absence unbalanced the team and we lost momentum.

  • 473 toonking // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:38 PM

was a fine performance by the team but I do think the players spent far too much time thinking abour what to do instead of actually doing it. The 3 on 3 I saw must be the crappest one i’ve seen i ages surely that should have seen some attempt made?

I can understand him if he were to come out with “it’s first game of the season” it’s been shown by 3 other teams already in everton, chelsea and now arsenal all of who should be winning this weekends opponents most times.

MOTM wynald, great performance done as a newbie and certainly didn’t take the extra power like most foreigners

  • 474 toonbrother // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:38 PM

Mbemba is going to go the same direction as Mbiwa
Arrive at NUFC with a great reputation

Made to look terrible playing next to colocinni
having to leave early with his reputation in tatters

Forunately for him, he’s only “21”
so he can afford to waste a few years of his career playing alongside colo

  • 475 JamesToon // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:39 PM

Think everyone agrees on here that anita coming off was the game changer. Tiote just not mobile enough anymore, lineup against swansea if anita isn’t fit?

    Krul
    Janmaat-Mbemba-Coloccini-Haidara/new left back
    Wijnaldum-Colback
    Sissoko-De Jong-Aarons/Perez
    Cisse

  • 476 Liverpool Mag // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:39 PM

    toonbrother

Did you watch the game or just see the score? Colo was excellent. Janmaat was the one at fault for the goals but even then they were minor lapses in an excellent game for him

  • 477 JDdubai // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:40 PM

    toonbrother

Enough please, EVERYONE knows what you think of Colo so you dont need to make the same point over and over and over and over and over and over and over again….WE GET IT, we all understand.

Maybe try to contribute to the blog by giving other points instead…

  • 478 JamesToon // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:40 PM

    slank

I thought gini had a very good game but you could tell he started to get tired as the game went on, and mitro unfortunately didn’t get enough service as the whole team started to fatigue

  • 479 saxonfenken // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:40 PM

Toonbrother, what a boring prat you are, please give it a rest

  • 480 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:40 PM

Yeah, they became hesitant as the game wore on, perhaps it was just tiredness and a need to slow the game down. Obertan’s game suffers more than most when he stops and thinks instead of just doing.

  • 482 Jib // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:41 PM

Heading towards 500 posts on this string
Is that a blog record ?

  • 483 midweek weekend // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:42 PM

hopefully anita injury isn’t too bad he did land really funny.

  • 484 Jib // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:42 PM

    Well done Ed

  • 485 geordiemark // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:43 PM

that ref did rob us we should have had 2 penalties he was a bloody disgrace, we need a real nasty central defender big strapping lad who takes no prisoners, I thought we played well but like everyone says when aneta went off that was it

  • 486 toonking // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:44 PM

The interesting thing will be how we as fans feel going into the 6th game of the season against watford because the result today gives me a bit worry about weather or not we can even get a oint against west ham, best chance might be a point at home to arsenal

  • 487 peterk3 // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:44 PM

Toonbrother, everybody is totally sick of hearing your stupid rants against Coloccini. Why don’t you say something constructive. That’s if your mentality will allow.

  • 488 mindshaft // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:45 PM

Yup LB is a priority position, Haidara is not ready
Anita is the playmaker under McClaren and we were a lot better with him on the pitch.
Gini tired in 2nd half but looks an excellent purchase
Mitrovic seemed to get a bit excited and didnt show anything
Mbemba looks decent, but we need someone who is decent in the air to partner him

Overall I’m happy with result and style of play under McClaren based on that game – hopefully Anitas injury isn’t bad, will be tough against Swansea next week – they looked very decent against Chelsea

  • 489 will die for the toon army // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:45 PM

    Wat did Colo do bad

My only issue is that we are going to b undone by
ariel threat. Swansea lets wait. Anita is going to b a big miss. Let me hop its a simple one.

  • 490 nut meg // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:49 PM

I thought we did OK overall, kept the ball pretty well, worked very hard for 60 mins or so then tired. The game got a bit scrappy when Anita came off but happy with a point. The defence still has a vacancy for a big commanding CB who can win headers. Two headed goals plus a few more chances missed should be the wake up call for the watching LC and MA.and SM of course.Promising stuff to come hopfully.

  • 491 The overrated Frenchman // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:51 PM

Soton well worth their point to be fair. Looked much more likely to score than us in the last 20 minutes. Stats will show we had plenty of possession but a lot of it was tippy-tappy, meaningless stuff. Defence still looks as brittle as a dead seahorse. For all the midfielders we have there is still nobody who can really control the game and set things up. Individually they all played ok but there’s a lack of real quality on the ball. Decent performance and result overall though it has to be said. Plenty of spirit shown which is encouraging.

  • 492 shaun83 // Aug 9, 2015 at 3:51 PM

Agree with most. Anita coming off derailed it. Would have been better to move obertan to right, put sisoko in the middle and aarons on the left.

    Haidara not good enough/not ready
    Another solid cb needed
I have a slight nagging feeling about mitrovic :/

  • 493 TheToonKing // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:09 PM

@jib, not even close. I think the season we got Ben Arfa, the transfer threads went over a 1000 comments.
