@The broons big wow Obteran got an assist. He finally got an assist for the 3 seasons or whatever he has been here. He looked terrible. Kept freezing up when he was about to take on a defender on the first half. Because he got an assist doesn’t make him a god don’t forget Haidara got a assist aswell…. Aaron’s has done more in a couple pre season games for us than what Obertan had done his whole career .

Yup – McClaren has it about right, we could have won but looked off the pace after Anita off, the subs didn’t do anything of note ( other than Mitrovic getting carded)

aarons was poor against Borussia and was at fault for the goal – Obertan had a decent game today, did you actually watch it?
I like Aarons but he doesn’t give the defensive cover that Haidara needs
    We need a new LB

Everyone give Obertan a clap. He got his assist for the season.

    See you next year Gabby.

He may hop that flight to Hollywood to shoot that new film he is in “The invisible man”

Obertan was my 3rd best player today. Provided much needed thrust, carries the ball long distances and pins the opposition back, kept the ball well and despite their defensive misunderstandings he and Haidara linked quite well going forward. Provided a blinding cross for the goal.

Those ‘supporters’ that love to scapegoat him would do well to actually get behind him. The least can be said is he brings something to the squad.

Alas, some people are too entrenched and vain to ever give any ground.

    Just got in from match
Overall much better performance and what a difference at the back when Krul has the ball centre halfs go wide to pick up the pass Anita drops into centre half pos to pick up the ball full backs bomb on – A BREATH OF FRESH AIR to see us playing out from the back.
My MOM was Anita in defensive midfield – always wanted the ball kept it simple with passes moved into space to pick ball up and got in a couple of challenges. Thought Colback did OK but when on the ball wanted one/two extra touches before passing.
New lads Mbemba and Wijnaldum were class.

Think we would of won if Anita had not got injured as Tiote looked miles off the pace when he came on and huge spaces appeared in front of defence.

All-in-All a much better performance than most in the last two years

@mindshaft Did you watch the match in America on the astro turf pitch?

When have you ever seen Obertan score 2 goals in 2 mins and one of them being an overhead kick? Even last pre season he scored vs Schalke. And vs City in the cup aswell. Plus you must be good if you manage to assist Mike Williamson. Aaron’s the only player I seen do that.

Some positives out of today I thought, gini and mbemba had good games although gini faded in second half.
Obertan was average for me as stated freezes when it comes to taking a man on. He gives decent cover but offers very little going forward imo.
Haidara is a concern for me and de Jong looks like his brother, a waste of a squad place.
Cisse worked his socks off too although he can’t elude that poor touch of his when it matters. I did think the ovation got the better of mitrovic too with that silly foul but he’s young and showed some good glimpses.
A slight improvement on pardumb but I’m yet to be convinced and will give it a few months before I pass judgement on the mclaren crew.

Obertan had many chances to do something today but nearly everytime was useless (although much better than what we expect from him). great assist but overall should he be playing 1st team wide position for Newcastle United – I’m afraid not even close. Is he better option than Aaron’s- certainly not. He defended so poorly for goals and haidara got the stick although……

Haidara was utter garbage today and is so raw it’s unreal. He tries to cross everything 1st time even when beckham would struggle instead of having a touch of composure. Most of his crosses either blocked or out for a goal kick. The lad needs to develop an awful lot before being our 1st choice.

We are desperate for an established LB and we really should not have sold santon as although not great defensively (similar to what we have) and always cut inside his composure ndtechnical ability was srreets ahead of anything in our current team.

Cant believe people on here are giving Obertan praise, apart from one cross he was terrible and after that one cross he was never seen again the second half, we are playing with ten men when he is on the pitch. Defensive frailties exactly the same as last season, Coloccini was completely ineffective when Southampton went forward, totaly out paced by any Southampton player going forward, most probably the worst signing we have made this window. Both Southampton goals were terrible defending by us, a repeat of last season without a doubt. Unless we sign a top class commanding centre half we will be in trouble again. Another long hard season if that does not happen.

I can’t believe people think this was a good performance. We conceded two goals off easily defendable crosses and were lucky not to concede a couple more.

Conceding two goals off average crosses = BAD DEFENDING.

If we defend like this the rest of the season, we’ll be fighting relegation again….
