Newcastle Draw 2-2 In Thrilling Game Against Saints

In what was an excellent game at St. James’ Park today, when both sides came back from being behind and drew 2-2, and it would have been  pity if any of these two sides had lost the game.

Both sides played good attacking football and were well matched.

gini wijnaldum heads hom saints

Gini Wijnaldum – scored a great goal today

On 25 minutes Southampton went ahead when a right wing cross was easily headed home by Pelle, and that goal came against the run of play as Newcastle had opened the game brightly and on the front foot.

Both sides were passing the ball around well and then after 42 minutes it was Cisse who scored after a great left wing cross from Haidara eluded the goalkeeper, and Cisse was there to out the ball into the back of the net.

It was 1-1 at half time and both sides were applauded off the field after a good entertaining first 45 minutes of the season.

Newcastle got off to a great start in the second half when Gabby Obertan put in a great right wing cross on the run, and it was Gini Wijnaldum who brilliantly headed the ball home on his debut for Newcastle.

But Southampton were always  in this game and they were very dangerous and came full pelt at Newcastle.

And after a lot of pressure on the Newcastle defense it was substitute Shane Long from a right wing cross who headed home past Krul with just 11 minutes to go to make it 2-2.

After that goal it was the Saints who were pressing for the winner late on, and in added time  Mane was straight though on goal after a great run, but shot wide.

A draw was the right result in this game.

Newcastle fans will have seen enough today that we will play some good passing football but in truth our defense still looked the weakness today.

Mbemba was really steady and strong at the back and Wijnaldum is pure class.

Aleksandar Mitrovic came on with 15 minutes to go and picked up a yellow card almost immediately for a wild tackle – but that was the adrenaline obviously.

But it was a good performance from this new Newcastle team against a side who will again finish high up in the Premier League table.

We’ll have a full report of the game out soon.

Comments welcome.

I thought gini had a very good game but you could tell he started to get tired as the game went on, and mitro unfortunately didn’t get enough service as the whole team started to fatigue

Wini MOTM? Nar he disappeared for half of it, was a good start for him though but I think Mbemba was better

    Colo was rubbish
    Colo was slow
    Colo was turned too easily
    Colo has no positional sence
Colo is the root of all evil and should be shot
Colo is the spawn of Satan
    Colo is the anti-christ

There you go toonbrother, that should cover just about everything, so for once try to post about something or someone other than bloody Colo

MOTM for NUFC: Colback, followed by Gigi and Sissoko

MOTM for S’otton: Alan Pardew for fooling Mclaren into giving Colo a new contract

Did you watch the game or just see the score? Colo was excellent. Janmaat was the one at fault for the goals but even then they were minor lapses in an excellent game for him

toonbrother you are so negative colo did fine today considering he had no game time in pre season, if anyone was to blame today it was the fullbacks for not tucking in or kruls for not commanding the area and coming to punch or collect the crosses

The only question is how long it will take mclaren to realise Colo undermines EVERYTHING he tries to achieve with this club. EVERYTHING

For our first game of the season, playing against a very good Southampton side who are more or less up to speed, I think we played very well. simple mistakes cost us but i think SM will soon get those out of the players.

For the first time, in a long time I am optimistic for the coming season……………………………………………………but would still like two or three more players coming in

We’ll be ripped apart by a far superior Southampton, we’ll never cope with there pace and passing ability, our league 2 defence will crumble.
Prepare yourselves for a taste of things to come.
It will take far more than three player to transform our basic squad that almost got us relegated.

Mbemba looks a real player, still needs a big CB next to him though.

Haidara improved in 2nd half, same with Obertan but still think Aarons should be starting.

    Mitrovic shouldnt tackle

Wini will come good when fit

    Sissoko was excellent

Colback very good, some timely tackles at the end.

Overall very happy with the performance, showed real promise even though our whole team was out on their feet with 20 to go.

Things to be optimisitc about – plus if we can add another winger and maybe a CB and shift out Willo we are looking good – maybe a DM if Anita is badly done.

Oh and toonbrother is a nob.

it’s now the return of constant reposting

The interesting thing will be how we as fans feel going into the 6th game of the season against watford because the result today gives me a bit worry about weather or not we can even get a point against west ham, best chance might be a point at home to arsenal

Colo was painful to watch today. We can continue to be at soft in center of defense. Match was enjoyable. Team looks improved, but still not there yet. I think it’ll be an emotional roller coaster again this year. We’ll lose many matches we shouldn’t and we’ll steal a couple we shouldn’t win as well.

All in all the match was entertaining, but lots to improve on.

Mbemba was a beast, a real power house. But for me, colback was there when everyone was not and he should be motm. Great shout out to mitro, that 80 yard run is just effort i have not seen in newcastle for a long long time

kruls in ability to command his area os a real problem for us how often in a game do you she him come for a cross to either punch or collect it, also his distribution is awful i would happily sell him on and buy a new keeper!

    You must be drunk!

Colo had a good game? He was a GHOST
Mbemba pretty much played central defence by himself

The 2nd goal came about because he was out of position which In turn drew Chancel out of position and allowed long double team Janmaat

He was skinned multiple occasions including one embarrassing occasion when Marne turned him out with simple burst of pace

Colback MOTM I think. Worked his socks off.

He changed his tactics by pressing up the pitch just like Sth H. were doing but their passing was superior & along with tiredness our midfield began to drop deeper & didn’t see through the plan which could have given us the lead.

All in all, fair result. Those criticising the defence, the 2 that played in the middle did so for the first time ever. And probably only had a couple of training sessions together.

    – the team look better without williamson and gouffron
    – Anita is not a defensive midfield, cant win the ball. still think he is a better full back than CM.
    – Collocini is ageing. Slow and Old.
    – Obertan and Sissoko play well during the first half and early 2nd half. we need aarons and maybe ayoze to replace them during 60-70mins.

There was a bit in that game where rodriguez had the ball and knocked it past mbemba, and mbemba kept up with him and cleared it, if we had williamson, rodriguez probs would have scored.

    You guys dont get it
A defensive display like today leads to relegation

When you dominate at home like we did today and still come away lucky to get a draw because of our defensive weakness, you are a PRIME CANDIDATE for relegation

Now is the time to panic

ToonBrother is a moron. We played excellent, still a couple of mistakes, and Collo looks off the pace after his injury but could still show some form this season. I think it will be his last season starting as we will be after his replacement.
We made some good link ups, Obertan showed us what we’ve been wanting to see off him since he got here. Mbemba played very well, covered Collo quite a bit, showed his pace and strength. Winny showed his goal scoring ability and tactical awareness. And Sissoko linked up amazingly with Cisse all game.

I thought we did OK overall, kept the ball pretty well, worked very hard for 60 mins or so then tired. The game got a bit scrappy when Anita came off but happy with a point. The defence still has a vacancy for a big commanding CB who can win headers. Two headed goals plus a few more chances missed should be the wake up call for the watching LC and MA.and SM of course.Promising stuff to come hopfully.

Last year I was shown to be the smartest guy in the room when colocinni’s return from injury triggered our slide into relegation dogfight

This year I will be proven right once again

WE will not get a SINGLE win until Colocinni ceases to be a starter

I actually think we cannot afford to have both Ober and Haidara together on the left. Yes, great cross from Ober for the goal but together they are defensively so very poor.
Our season will be hugely determined by how that issue is addressed (or not) but the first step has to be to play Aarons instead of Ober.
Not massive fan of Dummett either but I think Haidara’s defensive positioning needs some serious work on the training ground – so expect Dummett in the away matches as a minimum

I think you will find that there are some on here who didn’t actually see the match.

And there are some on here who saw the match but their hatred of certain players blind them to admit that certain players have performed well.

Lets just hope that from now on Anita will get the credit he deserves as he was and is the link player that ties everything together – as soon as he left the pitch we naturally sat deeper and allowed Southampton to come onto us thus creating the pressure that cost us three points.

Tioe and coldback are too similar to play together

Agree with most. Anita coming off derailed it. Would have been better to move obertan to right, put sisoko in the middle and aarons on the left.

Anything in the box and in the air was a huge issue

    Haidara not good enough/not ready
    Another solid cb needed
I have a slight nagging feeling about mitrovic :/
