Who Was Newcastle’s Best Player Against Southampton?

Newcastle were ahead in this game in the second half, but we just couldn’t hold onto the lead against a very good-looking Southampton side, and after Papiss Cisse and Gini Wijnaldum had put us ahead 2-1,  it was Shane Long who equalized for the Saints with just 11 minutes to go in the game.

But this was a very good start to the new campaign by a good Newcastle side, and the lads should get better once they have played a few more games together.

    COLO + Mbiwa = Failure
    COLO + Dummet = Failure
    COLO + Saylor = Failure
    COLO + Boomsong = Failure
    COLO + Willo = Failure
    COLO + Perch= Failure
COLO + Mbemba = ??? (2 goals conceded in one game)

    Anyone see a trend?

Thought the ginger ninja was excellent !

Tiote looked terrible we cant let him play against Swansea I would play Colback and Gini with De Jong as no 10

Colback probably won it for me in the last 30 minutes, but Sissoko in the first half was bossing the midfield.

the sad thhing is we were absolutely phenomenal going forward
If an attacking display like that doesnt earn you 3 points against a mediocre team Southampton you are are doomed!

    Colback for me

At times Colo played well, give him and Mbemba a few games to gel and they could be a good cb partnership.

The concern we’ve got around not having a tall and powerful CB makes colo’s new contract all the more stupid. Willo and saylor will not be getting sold, we’ve got a number of young CBs and maclarean himself seems happy enough to play both colo and mbemba instead of just one along side saylor and willo.

We had a simular dilla before when it was colo and mbiwa together leaving us without that powerful CB. Once dummett returns we could do OK because he is better at defending than hadaira, so colo and mbemba will have more assistance for them times power is needed, otherwise one of them will need to be replaced by saylor until we et a new power house CB.

You really think Mbemba will be the first player in 7 years to form a successful defensive partnership with Colo?

and Toonbrother is back with his usual unfounded Colo hatred…… i didn’t know what was missing.

Colo played good today. Thas Barca like system with playing out of the back suits him.
His legs went though last 15-20 mins.

    Have you watch Mbemba before?
Did you watch the game today?

As he is a very powerful CB and is regarded as being excellent in the air

Despite conceding 2 poor goals today, we need to keep playing Mbemba and Colo and I think they will form a good partnership. Need to keep consistency can’t just change the CB pairing after 1 game against a better team.

I thought the dynamic changed before Anita’s injury when Ginger Jack took a yellow for the team.He had to rein back the combative side of his game.If Anita had stayed fit he would have been subbed.

Colback for me but Gini was close. Mbemba looked great hope Colo gets up to speed quick. Haidara was blah for the most part so a new LB would be nice before the season starts, Dummett should be moved to CB

the guy kind of avoiding the blame game today is Janmaat though….He was involved and at fault for both their goals. He’s a cracking player, but needs to get better at defending and heading.

Have to go with Sissoko. I’m glad he proved me wrong and played with appetite today, not needing to be benched to wake him up, hope it continues.

First-half he was our most potent threat and second-half he covered a lot of ground and still went on a few good marauding runs.

    Krul – 6.5
    Janmaat – 5.5
    Mbemba – 6.5
    Colo – 6
    Haidara – 5
    Anita – 7
    Colback 7
    Sissoko – 8
    Obertan – 7
    Wiji – 7
    Cisse – 6.5

Very good result against a team two or three games ahead of us in preparation.

Coloccini and Tiote will need a couple of games to get up to speed after injury.

Gini & Mbemba will need a few more to get the speed of the prem but did very well.

McClaren very much still assessing what he’s got but will be happy to go to Christmas with that 18. If we can get another two in before the end of the month that would be icing on the cake.

yeah spot on. Player that is past his prime. Its odd somebody mentioned it, he was here for over 9 years and not really revered or respected.

Tells you a lot that. I think if Ashley does not deliver a QUALITY proved CB we are in for a troubled season. Whatever the forwards do it’s undone by the back happens all the time. Both goals where shocking errors on the back four’s part.

Seeing Ashley witnessing this first hand today will hopefully initiate the penny to drop so to speak.

I’m hoping they see Colo and Haidara are the weak links. We also can’t play sdj and mitrovic together without lots of pace around them. Both too slow up top. Mitrovic needs service.

It’s a good point about Krul. He used to come and claim much more than he does now and when your known weakness is aerial ability, you’d think when they’re setting up for an obvious cross your ‘keeper would take control more frequently than he does.

Colo and Mbemba is our 1st choice partnership and will be for the season, I’ve accepted that, despite me not wanting him to stay and for us to bring in a commanding CB.

Before today I marked down these STs as those that would give us the most problems, certainly not an exhaustive list but the most obvious:

    Pelle
    Lukaku
    Giroud
    Gomis
    Sakho
    Benteke
    Costa
    Diouf

We’re not getting the CB, the only other way to combat it is to get a tall LB, similar to that Pieters for Stoke, to help at set-pieces and instruct your GK to come for more crosses.

Probably, Colback, Sissoko, Anita, take your pick. Although Krul made two amazing saves as well, tbh.
To win it we should’ve thrown Aarons, Perez on, the three that came on were all poor.

    Sissoko for me. Anita next.

We played well which I didnt really believe and had belief that we wld win not disappointed though. I think we still miss alot of chances. We attack very well this time balls came in final third. Cisse scored but he is still the weak link.

Mbemba & Colo will get good.
