Who Was Newcastle’s Best Player Against Southampton?

3:58 pm, Sunday, August 9th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 90 Comments

Newcastle were ahead in this game in the second half, but we just couldn’t hold onto the lead against a very good-looking Southampton side, and after Papiss Cisse and Gini Wijnaldum had put us ahead 2-1,  it was Shane Long who equalized for the Saints with just 11 minutes to go in the game.

But this was a very good start to the new campaign by a good Newcastle side, and the lads should get better once they have played a few more games together.

    COLO + Mbiwa = Failure
    COLO + Dummet = Failure
    COLO + Saylor = Failure
    COLO + Boomsong = Failure
    COLO + Willo = Failure
    COLO + Perch= Failure
COLO + Mbemba = ??? (2 goals conceded in one game)

    Anyone see a trend?

  • 2 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:01 PM

Thought the ginger ninja was excellent !

Tiote looked terrible we cant let him play against Swansea I would play Colback and Gini with De Jong as no 10

  • 3 WWSBRD // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:01 PM

Colback for me, I just couldnt bring myself to vote for Anita

If u dont play Tiote he will not get back up to speed

  • 5 JackButler // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:03 PM

Between coldback and Anita for me, went with Anita as when he went off the whole dynamic changed showing the impact he was having

  • 6 Thump // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:03 PM

Colback probably won it for me in the last 30 minutes, but Sissoko in the first half was bossing the midfield.

@toonbrother: Suspended from RTG again, mate?

  • 7 toonbrother // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:04 PM

the sad thhing is we were absolutely phenomenal going forward
If an attacking display like that doesnt earn you 3 points against a mediocre team Southampton you are are doomed!

  • 8 Take a Chancel on me // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:04 PM

    Colback for me

At times Colo played well, give him and Mbemba a few games to gel and they could be a good cb partnership.

  • 9 Take a Chancel on me // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:05 PM

Southampton mediocre? Have you been drinking turps again?

  • 10 toonking // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:06 PM

The concern we’ve got around not having a tall and powerful CB makes colo’s new contract all the more stupid. Willo and saylor will not be getting sold, we’ve got a number of young CBs and maclarean himself seems happy enough to play both colo and mbemba instead of just one along side saylor and willo.

We had a simular dilla before when it was colo and mbiwa together leaving us without that powerful CB. Once dummett returns we could do OK because he is better at defending than hadaira, so colo and mbemba will have more assistance for them times power is needed, otherwise one of them will need to be replaced by saylor until we et a new power house CB.

and Toonbrother is back with his usual unfounded Colo hatred…… i didn’t know what was missing.

Colo played good today. Thas Barca like system with playing out of the back suits him.
His legs went though last 15-20 mins.

    Have you watch Mbemba before?
Did you watch the game today?

As he is a very powerful CB and is regarded as being excellent in the air

    Well said TheToonKing

  • 17 JamesToon // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:09 PM

Despite conceding 2 poor goals today, we need to keep playing Mbemba and Colo and I think they will form a good partnership. Need to keep consistency can’t just change the CB pairing after 1 game against a better team.

  • 18 Jib // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:11 PM

I thought the dynamic changed before Anita’s injury when Ginger Jack took a yellow for the team.He had to rein back the combative side of his game.If Anita had stayed fit he would have been subbed.

  • 19 toonicle // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:11 PM

Colback for me but Gini was close. Mbemba looked great hope Colo gets up to speed quick. Haidara was blah for the most part so a new LB would be nice before the season starts, Dummett should be moved to CB

  • 20 TheToonKing // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:11 PM

the guy kind of avoiding the blame game today is Janmaat though….He was involved and at fault for both their goals. He’s a cracking player, but needs to get better at defending and heading.

  • 23 Noel Worst // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:14 PM

Have to go with Sissoko. I’m glad he proved me wrong and played with appetite today, not needing to be benched to wake him up, hope it continues.

First-half he was our most potent threat and second-half he covered a lot of ground and still went on a few good marauding runs.

    Krul – 6.5
    Janmaat – 5.5
    Mbemba – 6.5
    Colo – 6
    Haidara – 5
    Anita – 7
    Colback 7
    Sissoko – 8
    Obertan – 7
    Wiji – 7
    Cisse – 6.5

  • 24 maskedman // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:14 PM

Very good result against a team two or three games ahead of us in preparation.

Coloccini and Tiote will need a couple of games to get up to speed after injury.

Gini & Mbemba will need a few more to get the speed of the prem but did very well.

McClaren very much still assessing what he’s got but will be happy to go to Christmas with that 18. If we can get another two in before the end of the month that would be icing on the cake.

yeah spot on. Player that is past his prime. Its odd somebody mentioned it, he was here for over 9 years and not really revered or respected.

Tells you a lot that. I think if Ashley does not deliver a QUALITY proved CB we are in for a troubled season. Whatever the forwards do it’s undone by the back happens all the time. Both goals where shocking errors on the back four’s part.

Seeing Ashley witnessing this first hand today will hopefully initiate the penny to drop so to speak.

There is no getting up to speed for tiote in footballing ability!! He does not have the brain or passing ability no matter how fit he is

  • 35 OneAlanShearer // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:16 PM

I’m hoping they see Colo and Haidara are the weak links. We also can’t play sdj and mitrovic together without lots of pace around them. Both too slow up top. Mitrovic needs service.

  • 36 JackButler // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:16 PM

If he signs for Stoke first thing Mark Huges will teach him is how to kick and elbow an opponant as Stoke are masters at that

  • 37 Noel Worst // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:16 PM

It’s a good point about Krul. He used to come and claim much more than he does now and when your known weakness is aerial ability, you’d think when they’re setting up for an obvious cross your ‘keeper would take control more frequently than he does.

Colo and Mbemba is our 1st choice partnership and will be for the season, I’ve accepted that, despite me not wanting him to stay and for us to bring in a commanding CB.

Before today I marked down these STs as those that would give us the most problems, certainly not an exhaustive list but the most obvious:

    Pelle
    Lukaku
    Giroud
    Gomis
    Sakho
    Benteke
    Costa
    Diouf

We’re not getting the CB, the only other way to combat it is to get a tall LB, similar to that Pieters for Stoke, to help at set-pieces and instruct your GK to come for more crosses.

  • 38 welshgeordie9 // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:16 PM

Well done to the lads today, espically the new ones, big Improvement from last season, i can believe some are already moaning.

  • 39 cyprus // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:17 PM

Probably, Colback, Sissoko, Anita, take your pick. Although Krul made two amazing saves as well, tbh.
To win it we should’ve thrown Aarons, Perez on, the three that came on were all poor.

  • 40 will die for the toon army // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:18 PM

    Sissoko for me. Anita next.

We played well which I didnt really believe and had belief that we wld win not disappointed though. I think we still miss alot of chances. We attack very well this time balls came in final third. Cisse scored but he is still the weak link.

Mbemba & Colo will get good.

Tiote did used to be good in pardews old park the bus style hes not suited to playing pass and move

Anita is much better suited to playing in the middle to play the type of football that we played today most of the game !!

Tiote will get game time this season so he can maybe prove otherwise

We played well mate, two simple mistakes cost us, but we bossed the game for long periods and the new lads looked very good by the end.

could be looking at a half decent season mate, first one for a long time 🙂

    Stoke V Liverpool
is like watching 2 average mid table teams, probably where they will both end up

  • 57 cyprus // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:27 PM

Perez mustn’t lose his place and if Aarons is as good as he showed preseason he too must be played.

Obertan, for me, is one of the most frustrating players we’ve had. That cross was gold, but then he does so much wrong as well. Wish he could dribble… I’m concerned about that SDJ too. He seems way too slow for the PL, easily dispossessed, hope he’ll improve.

Steve must analyse what happened after the 60′, as we looked comfortable winners and suddenly lost control. Anita?

  • 58 davetoon // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:27 PM

Tiote was ok. He made a couple of important tackles but also gave the ball away when we had that bad spell towards the end of the game.

  • 59 JackButler // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:28 PM

I think its either or with Coldback and Tiote unless you are trying to close out a game. They are very much alike and neither offers the link up play of Anita

  • 60 Take a Chancel on me // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:28 PM

Anita’s injury changed the game no doubt about that

  • 61 WWSBRD // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:28 PM

Problem with Anita is he isnt a destroyer and is easily bullied where as those are Tiotes strengths doesnt have to be either or and against better teams having Tiote in there will benefit us much more imo

  • 62 Noel Worst // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:29 PM

Tiote’s decision making has always been, is and will always be slow, making the the correct decision is a challenge in itself for him. Colback is Tiote minus the brain farts, with added mobility and better long shots. Tiote should be second fiddle to Colback and only in emergencies should they play alongside each other.

I’m not going to be questioning this CB pairing too seriously just yet,it is the first game of season and things will always be difficult for new players. southampton did make a number of easy headers on the ball and whilst he is still adapting to his new league we shouldn’t be having 2 fullbacks getting 2 attacking and as a whole I don’t really like hairdryer much at all, dummet might be less attacking but he is most certain a great player defensively

  • 66 corkypants // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:30 PM

Noel worst i noticed it last season in krul aswell as his poor distribution timmy boy should be coming to take the pressure of at corners and freekicks the amount of times he is stood still on his line it all most happened a lot today aswell as the goals there was a perfect example just before gini scored when yoshida nearly scored in the end it was a good save from krul but he wpuldnt of had to make the save if he would of come to collect the ball in the first place

  • 67 JackButler // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:31 PM

Mbemba settled well and looked better as the game went on, he and Colo split which cost the first goal and Janmaat lost Shane Long which cost the second goal. Haidara looked good going forward but was too slow in closing down Tadic when he was in a crossing position – Its a work in progress 🙂

Anita & Colback for the Season and Wijnaldum in the CAM. De Jong shld b back up believe it. He has lost it.

  • 70 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:33 PM

Also thought the subs didn’t really work I would have brought on Perez instead of Mitrovic and Aarons instead of De Jong to stretch them at the back which is exactly what they done to us with Mane and Long !

Happy with the draw as Southampton are a team that are in our mini league and we were more than a match for them despite them being ahead of us in preparation

  • 71 Wayayman // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:34 PM

Just got back in from the match. plus points are that mbemba is some player, his reading of the game reminded me of Woodgate who was the best CD I’ve ever seen play for us. mbemba’s pace and strength is impressive as is his passing and awareness.
I loved the way we played the ball out from the back without fail, not a punt up field until Anita went off. Anita by the way did a very good job and tiote looked off the pace understandably but he’s a sideways merchant and we really struggled when he came on.
Wijnaldum looked good, always trying to be positive and sissoko and him always threatened going forward.
Not so good – in fact understatement of the year- down our left side. Hiadara is not a defender. Not sure what he is actually as his first touch is very poor which gets him in trouble a lot in that position. Obertan despite his excellent break and superb cross is poor unless the ball is played in from of him.
All in all, good positive changes but decent team will punish us down the left. Both Southampton goals came down that side I think.

  • 72 Marty-Toon // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:35 PM

Can’t believe so many voted Colback ,made some good blocks and a couple of decent free kicks and corners but slows our game down too much.
Tiote was a poor substitute choice,Aarons could’ve come in and had Sissoko in the middle instead.
Would have Anita and Collocini in there instead of Colback(hasn’t lived up to the expectation ) and a new CB in beside Mbemba.

  • 73 brklyngeordie // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:35 PM

This is my honest opinion of what I saw

Krul- First goal thought he could have done better but so could Mbemba on that play; good save on Tadic early great save on Yoshida on set piece; Kicking still poor.

Mbemba- Had some good moments had some mental slips but boy is he night and day from Willo.

Colo- Pretty good not great doesn’t deserve the flak from ToonBrother; Should have been rewarded a PK after that gorgeous control on box in that play.

Haidara- Played ok going forward had decent link up with Obertan but to much watching the ball for me and needs to make sure he just marks his man and not allow runs behind him

Janmaat- Truth be told not his best game and was at fault for second goal lacked desire on that cross

Colback- Solid made two game saving interceptions at end of game for me just needs to think forward little more for me when ball is at feet

Anita- played well till hurt has nice understanding w/ Colback

Sissoko- Played well had some good moments and nice pass to Wini early in game needs to stay

Obertan- Not bad nice cross on Wini goal always offers pace seemed to work well with Haidara for the most part

Wini- Great goal should have scored early on in game but was blocked by Davis set piece deliveries could have been better but def looked quality

Cisse- Has disappointing spells in games and frustrates but somehow always finds back of net and that is a great thing

Subs- Mitro looked a bull; De Jong not much; Tiote not in form and really needs to move ball quicker or will never fit in with what we are working towards

Colback- Solid made two game saving interceptions at end of game for me just needs to think forward little more for me when ball is at feet

Anita- played well till hurt has nice understanding w/ Colback

Sissoko- Played well had some good moments and nice pass to Wini early in game needs to stay

If Haidara closed down his man quicker to stop the crosses he would have had a very decent game, but he’s still young and learning and think he will be our number one left back going forward.

Mbemba has pace and strength, just needs time now but he already looks miles ahead of both Saylor and Willo, but its Colo who worries me at this point as his lack of pace costs us more often than not, but cant see him being replaced after retaining the armband and the new contract

  • 75 Big Pappa Cissé // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:36 PM

Well overall I was impressed with the game although 3 points would have been ideal .

That performance shows how different we are under McLaren, and we actually look like we have a plan and were the better team for the most part .

I think anyone who wanted Cisse & Sissoko sold should give their head a shake, as they still have vital roles at this club IMO, and today proved Moussa is best on the right.

However defensively we are still poor . I know it was Collo & M’bemba’s first PL game together so it should improve, but we definitely need a new LB . I was prepared to give Haidara a chance, but he isn’t cutting it and Janmaat is making him look like a pub player .

Overall pretty happy with our performance and the season is shaping up to be promising. Just hope we plug our defensive holes and that Anita is okay . The game changed after he went off .

i think the only disappointment for me were haidara and especially janmatt who was culpable for both goals and giving the ball away a lot in promising positions..

But it was great to see attacking pass and move football after so long and I’m sure if anita hadn’t been injured aarons could have had an impact in the last 20 mins.

anita is very effective in keeping things moving wheeas tiote slowed everything down again

  • 78 IITianToon // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:38 PM

I am watching the Stoke game, and their supporters are singing and bouncing, and that is putting the pressure firmly on Liverpool. How come our fans get so nervous and edgy the moment the opponent fashions a good moment. Also when a player plays the ball back, people get on their back. And I do not agree that it is always the players’ responsibility to give the supporters something to cheer about. Sometimes it has to be the other way, and consistent support, which should continue even if a player makes a loose pass, or plays the ball back from midfield.
It is time we turned up the volume, and allow the players to play with freedom and without fear of being booed after a mistake

  • 79 beefman13 // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:38 PM

Fair result, better chances for the saints imo, we had three very possible penalty shouts, i have to say Colo is disaster, flat footed, slow, hopeless at defending crosses, should not have played with no pre season for starters.

Overall we looked good on the break, but the cheque book has to come out again, all the danger came from Haidaras side of the pitch, far far too much time given for crosses coming in, do our defenders even talk? In the end we could have lost this match by a couple of goals, there were positive signs but the same old mistakes and the other team did their homework so fair play to them.

By the way – what a crap game

  • 82 Obafan // Aug 9, 2015 at 4:41 PM

    My view:

Krul: made a few very important saves today

Janmaat;: good going forward, but loses lots of headers in our own box which lead to the 2ng goal
Colo: not too good, but first game for a while and new partnership. Would have loved Abdennour but that won’t happen.
Mbemba: quality player which I knew from the Belgian league. I think he will form a good partnership with Colo though.
Haidara: the weakest link for me. He let Tadic put the cross in to easily. A few poor first touches aswell. I think we need a new LB.

Sissoko: played with passion again; good going forward; good strength; think he will have a good season
Colback: works very hard, made a point saving block
Anita: got my voe. We lost three points from the moment he went off; he and Colback were closing things quite good. Let’s hope he can play next week!
Obertan: gets lots of stick; but he played a very good game; great assist, but the left flank was so dodgy in defending
Wijnaldum: very good goal; good engine, but needs time to adapt to the EPL; after 65 minutes he was out of the game

Cisse: a poure goalscorer, who really worked hard and he should have styayed on IMO

Tiote: far from his best form, needed to much time on the ball and did not fill the gap Anita left
Mitrovic: was overexited when he came on and that was it. Needs time but he will score goals I’m sure of that
De Jong: did not come in the game, but came on when we were outplayed

Overall I’m happy with the point and someone on here said Southampton is a poor team. Well he should review the game; it is a very dangerous team which will end high up the table.

Next week we need at least another point at Swansea, which will be a very tough game, cause they deserved to win at Mourinho’s bridge ;-).

    JB

Hairdryer is only 1 year younger than dummett, i’ve seen them for months now and dummett has been so much better with his defending than that seen by hadaira, he might well be a weaker person going forward but the only real forward play full backs need is speed and we can tell from hadaira’s poor form getting back he’s no faster than dummett..

The gret thing with dummett having a better performance defensively is we can use our centre midfielders more aggressively themselves and these should have less ground to cover and as much as we say hadaira could improve his form getting back, we could consider the same for dummett’s forward form and the binifit of improving dummett’s form is he can play CB when needed..

On the whole I was very pleased with our play, I thought Haidara was the weakest link, to much ball watching. Once Anita came off we started to fall apart and looked unsettled.
I don’t know what to say about Mit apart from a bull in a China shop comes to mind. We definitely need a rb . A good point though

People raving about Colback, he gave the ball away about half a dozen times in the middle of the park. He stood out as he made a blinding tackle but other than that he gave it away far too much.

Anita seemed a lot more productive with the ball and I never really rated him last year

Haidara was culpable for both goals and several other crosses that he got nowhere near cutting out

Leftback is the new priority someone akin to Enrique strength and pace required don’t blame the centre backs when the crosses keep flying in due to a weak full back

Dummett is much better than Haidara. He is even faster than him.

I voted for Colback. He was quite solid through out. Held the ball up well and found the right pass. He also saved our bacon with a last ditch slide to prevent Mane from making it 3 – 2. Mbemba was a close second for me. He looked solid, strong and aware not only that he also had to deal with Colo’s lack of pace.

    Krul – 6.5
Haidara – 6 (More for his attacking play, still prtty shakey defending.)
Colo – 5.5 (not fully fit but does look like his age has slowed him)
    Mbemba – 7
    Janmaat – 6.5
    Obertan – 7
    Colback – 7.5
Anita – 6.5 (Agree it went to shit after he left he pitch)
Sissoko – 7 (Looked comfortable down that right wing)
    Gini – 6.5 – (He’ll be strong when hes at 100%)
Cisse – 6.5 (First touch letting him down)
    Tiote – 5
    Mitrovic – 5.5
    De Jong – 5

Happy with the performance. Still highlights we need a more complete full back – Haidara is good going enough going forward but poor at the back. We need a strong CB, Colo’s past it, the Prem is too fast paced for an aging centre back. Another striker needed aswell. Mitrovic looks like he will tally up a fair few cards!

Decent performance today, loads of positives. Colback would be world class if he could even attempt a kick with his right foot.. Love the ginger pirlo..but howay mate, have a bit of a go with your right in training!!
