It’s Neck And Neck For Our Man of the Match

8:44 am, Monday, August 10th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 32 Comments

Newcastle played well yesterday and Steve McClaren will take a lot of positives out the 2-2 draw with Southampton, but he will also have areas of the team to ponder, that probably have to be improved with new players coming in over the last three weeks of the summer transfer window.

Gini Wijnaldum after scoring yesterday

Both Gini Wijnaldum and Chancel Mbemba – the two new lads, had good games and they are in the top three in our voting for Man of the Match.

Gini is just ahead of local lad Jack Colback, who gave another good display yesterday in the Newcastle engine room.

There’s less than 3,000 readers have voted so far – so there’s still time to vote if you haven’t already done so – one vote per reader.

For the first time in a long time the team played with a lot of passion and belief.. And we played good attacking football which was good to see..2-2 draw very good results considering we lost 4-0 to Southampton the last couple of times..
Up next will be swansea.. Another point will be really good especially looking at the way they played chelsea

    Cyprus from last thread

    Agree on then pacey forward.

Austin is similar to mitrovic. We needed that too.

But we need a plan b or a complimentary player.

It was a real joy to watch us pass the ball for the first time in years.Anita done what Anita does best ,receives, gives and goes.A million miles from the last few years & very encouraging for the future. There’s a lot of fitness yet to come from all the players really but Tiote in particular is half a season away from anywhere near full fitness. We simply can’t afford to have him as back up at the minute. He came on when everybody was tiring and was still miles off the pace.I don’t want to be too critical but I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Anita is OK for the next match. I can see a entertaining season ahead but as others have pointed out, we have the same problems at the back….we all know what they are!

We also created some chances. Gino got close as did cisse another time.

On another day we may have scored a 3rd.

Could someone who was at the match comment on the atmosphere.

  • 7 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Aug 10, 2015 at 9:01 AM

    Nut meg
    Very up and down.
Crowd up for it good atmosphere until they scored then the usual doom and gloom could here a pin drop.
Scored either side of half time atmosphere excellent. Cisse got a great cheer/clap when he went off. When Anita went off you could feel Southampton were on the front foot the crowd became edgy and when they scored edge of seat for last ten minutes.

But all-in-all much better atmosphere than last year – could/will get better if we play like we did every/most weeks

    nut meg,
It isn’t just his passing with Anita, he is clever and knows when to drop, when to cover. Tiote doesn’t do that, he is more of an enforcer. I don’t see Tiote ever being match ready unless he gets 3 or 4 games on the bounce, which is a big concern. He worked as a shield coming on for McClaren in Holland, but the higher tempo in England will highlight his need for regular match play when he does it here.

Did Abeid go to Germany in the end, or did it fall through with his medical?

Hope Schoenmaker can get us even more physically fit so that we can last longer than 75mins, that was the difference with the saints their players were able to last a whole 90mins almost. I suppose it’s not surprising as they’ve had far superior coaching in the last few years with Koeman and pochettino whereas we’ve just had coaches like Pardew, carver and stone all stuck in the dark ages

  • 10 northernracoon // Aug 10, 2015 at 9:02 AM

I was at the game yesterday and the atmosphere was great…. compared to last season it was just completely different….in all honesty… we outplayed them until anita was taken off….and tiote just wasnt up to speed and added to the players tiring thats when Southampton could of taken the 3 points…. but for 60..70 minutes… we were the much better team

  • 11 Jib // Aug 10, 2015 at 9:10 AM

People are forgettting that Koeman this week and Garry Monk next week know their players to the nth degree whereas McClaren and his staff are still on a learning curve.
With that in mind , plus the number of weeks we are behind in preparation , the fact that we nearly won yesterday after going a goal behind is truly remarkable and bodes well for the season as it advances.

  • 12 Toonfan8 // Aug 10, 2015 at 9:13 AM

I think we should be positive after that performance. We played some good football, we are not up to speed yet, because our American tour and Colo and Mbemba together will be only better, but I think Mbemba looked great player yesterday. Wijnaldum looked great too. We need to bring at least one defender and maybee sell Tiote and bring another DM who is up to speed and his head will be here…

  • 13 gorgonzola ( former Pecorino former to gorgonzola) // Aug 10, 2015 at 9:14 AM

Its great looking at positives, it really is. Shows a bit of progress.

I see it this way, what would have prevented the second goal? Good defence and possibly a key CB signing in the region of 15mil quid which ashley easily has a but has not supplied.

Why aren’t we bidding decent money for the spine of nufc for once?
    It beggars belief.

  • 14 Ian Toon // Aug 10, 2015 at 9:16 AM

Jib- Good point. To further enforce it was claimed that West Ham massively benefitted yesterday from being in Europa in terms of match fitness. Likewise Saints.

  • 15 cyprus // Aug 10, 2015 at 9:19 AM

    On MOM,
without Wiji’s contribution and goal, we wouldn’t have drawn. However, he tired and lost the ball quite a few times before he was taken off, endangering us.
I went with Colb because without him we would’ve surely lost. And he hardly put a foot wrong ALL game.
PS. For those who criticise Sissoko, take a look at the game if you can find a recording: influential, dominant.

  • 16 nut meg // Aug 10, 2015 at 9:19 AM

It seems a bit odd about Abeid. It was reported he had went to Germany for talks but nothing else has been mentioned since as far I know so don’t have any idea as to what’s happening with him.At the minute we might be needing him if Anita misses any games either now or in the near future. He was really good yesterday and I’m delighted that he’s playing in a what appears to be a settled position instead of getting shuffled around like before.

  • 17 cyprus // Aug 10, 2015 at 9:20 AM

    Mane, thanks 🙂
    That’s who we need.

  • 18 Ian Toon // Aug 10, 2015 at 9:22 AM

Let’s hope it also spells the end of dog days in negativity on here!
As it will mean we will have a good season.
The miserable( usual suspects) never happier than when being miserable were only last week bemoaning the fact that the mackems had sorted out their defence through astute signings and why hadn’t
    we !
I didn’t watch the mackem game but my newspaper football journalist gave the players referred to above 3/3 and 4 and commented on being generous. We need a CB and a LB would not be out of place but not the cast off failures at other clubs.

  • 19 Jib // Aug 10, 2015 at 9:23 AM

    Not Mane (Main)
    Mané (Ma Nay)
    These accents are important

  • 20 Toonfan8 // Aug 10, 2015 at 9:25 AM

Does Anita injury look bad? When he will be back in training?

  • 21 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 10, 2015 at 9:28 AM

    150expatmag // Aug 10, 2015 at 5:54 AM

I have to laugh at idiots like Blackley and Brownlie who expect instant success.

Old Blackley has to laugh at you, Expat. I don’t expect instant success. I just say what I see. It wasn’t instant success. It was a very good game and a decent performance. Some players were outstanding. Others were average or worse.

As for me lying about McClaren, when I was 25 yards away and you were in Melbourne, you couldn’t make it up. I don’t even know what you’re saying isn’t true. What are you disputing? Makro and Costco were in the stands, which is good to see. They came down and Makro was berating Colback for not getting his head up and spraying it wide.

while we may not have won the game, I for one was very impressed with how the team was set up and how they went about the game, even obertan had one of his better games, and the main positive for me is that this a brand new way of playing, new players in key positions, I feel we can only get better from this, I think we had 2 very good shouts for pens, all in all very happy

  • 23 nut meg // Aug 10, 2015 at 9:29 AM

It was mentioned on the post match interview with SM that he had a long meeting with MA yesterday before the game. I’m hoping it was about our much needed reinforcements for our defence. Now that would put a spring in my step!!

  • 24 toontaff2 // Aug 10, 2015 at 9:29 AM

Must be 20 unwashed infiltrators voting for Haidara!

  • 25 toontaff2 // Aug 10, 2015 at 9:34 AM

As for that comment about the mackems having their defence sorted!

  • 26 Our Toon // Aug 10, 2015 at 9:37 AM

I think I may have watched a different game to most others yesterday. Anita was poor, yes he dropped in with the defence and offered the short pass into him. Was always available for the pass amd retained possession but every time he passed forward he gave it away. Sideways passing he was fine, he couldn’t control Mane at all who he lost time after time. On the ball he was ok, without the ball he was lost, couldn’t track runners, outbattled and out muscled!!

  • 27 bobby mango // Aug 10, 2015 at 9:38 AM

Our MoM is a tough one to call. I don’t think anyone had a complete game, Wijn faded and had to be subbed, Mbemba was at fault a couple of times, Colback didn’t use the ball that well.

Think Wijn’s performance and subsequent votes had been enhanced because of our excitement about him but a goal in his debut is a great start.

Colback got plaudits for a couple of great bits of defensive work when it really counted but that enhanced what had been a fairly tepid performance from him.

Mcclaren’s statement about being great until the ball goes in either box is oh so true. Now down to him to sort that out.

  • 28 Toonfan8 // Aug 10, 2015 at 9:49 AM

how come that Mane has most his chances after Anita was injured if he couldnt keep him out? He keept him out better than Tiote or Colback

  • 29 lesh // Aug 10, 2015 at 10:08 AM

If it’s any comfort, Haidara features in the Guardian’s team of the weekend.

And who reported on the match? Louise (Weys keys are these?) Taylor!

  • 30 HamarMagpie // Aug 10, 2015 at 10:56 AM

23 votes for Coloccini for MoM? What game did you lot watch? He was our worst player by quite some distance. Looking off the pace and losing his man time and time again. Plaudits for Obertan and Anita who performed better than expected. Our midfield fell apart when Anita was strechtered off. Tiote is a joke. We should had Abeid available for back up.

  • 31 Grumpy // Aug 10, 2015 at 11:23 AM

2 more goals given up at home, not good

  • 32 Moonraker15 // Aug 10, 2015 at 11:31 AM

I really enjoyed much of the game and the atmosphere was generally very good!

When they scored their first the ground went quiet but the anticipation was another hammering, which didn’t happen.

When Anita went off we were tired as Southampton have a few weeks and games on us at the moment.

However I can’t understand all the negativity as McClaren knows what we need better than the average fan.

Apart from Obertan’s great run and cross for Gini’s superb goal, he was very poor and Aarons has to come in.

All in all it is getting better for sure !
