Newcastle Get Good Draw In League Cup

8:08 am, Friday, August 14th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 14 Comments

This is the season that Newcastle will try to win one of the English Cups, and since the League Cup seems to be easier one to win than the FA Cup, that’s the main one we will be going for this season.

We’ve been helped by what looks like a fairly easy draw in the second round, when we have been drawn at home to League Two side Northamtpon Town.

Of course we have just signed the Northampton striker – 19 year-old Ivan Toney, so he may be even given a run out that night, but we have to play a strong enough side to ensure we win that game.

The Cobblers beat Blackpool 3-0 in the first round and Steve McClaren has already won this competition before with Middlesbrough in 2004,  when they beat Bolton 2-1 at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff, and it’s
the only trophy Middlesbrough have ever won.

We had a decent run last season in the competition when we beat Man City 2-0 for the only time at the Etihad Stadium, and we were eventually hammered 4-0 by Spurs in the quarter finals at White Hart Lane.

We need to do better than that this season.

Here are the second-round ties, to be played the week beginning 24 August:

Aston Villa v Notts County
Walsall v Brighton
Crystal Palace v Shrewsbury
Sheffield Wednesday v Oxford
Portsmouth v Reading
Hartlepool v Bournemouth
Fulham v Sheffield United
MK Dons v Cardiff
Hull City v Rochdale
Sunderland v Exeter
Bury v Leicester City
Doncaster v Ipswich
Rotherham v Norwich City
Swansea City v York
QPR v Carlisle
Barnsley v Everton
Peterborough v Charlton
Birmingham v Gillingham
Newcastle United v Northampton
West Brom v Port Vale
Wolves v Barnet
Burton v Middlesbrough
Luton v Stoke City
Preston v Watford

Comments welcome.

Silema, yes, excellent post. I was just about to post similar.

For something to be done, you must actually do it.

It’s like moaning that your car won’t start, but it will never start because they haven’t done anything about it. 8 hours later they missed work and are still sat in the driveway having achieved zero miles distance. All because nothing was done about it. They love the car though, so that’s ok…

No, the car needed fixing to fully enjoy what the car can bring.

    Ashley out.

We always have an easy draw at second round. Its the third round that is crazy.

Love that car analogy you always bring out.

We have to play 6 games to the final.
    Second round – 1
    Third round – 1
    Fourth round – 1
    Quarter Final – 1
    Semi – Final – 2
    6 games.
    Mcca make it happen.

Llort, I love analogies. It helps view situations from various angles, making them better understood.

Another 4 players like the calibre of the ones just coming in will take us to about the numbers that we’ve let go.

Ashley spent 30 odd million in the transfer market. Yippee, he also did sign anyone in 3 transfer windows and has had a bucket load of tv money. More needs to be done. 30m is nothing on that basis.

*Didn’t sign anyone is 3 transfer windows.

The people who drove the car loved it, but the owner loved to boot it around town in first gear to see how far he could screw it before it broke down. When it looked like the people who loved it weren’t prepared to tax and insure it for him, he promised to start driving it in second gear.

Laurent Robert 32 didn’t we sign 7 players last summer? its not that we haven’t signed anyone its more that the quality of signings has not been up to the level needed

might gan to this one, home tie, new leash of life under a new era. I feel like we may actually have a go this season. Mcclaren seems genuine in his ambitions.

Toney get a run out? Nooooo! We are out to win this thing. We have 2 strikers and only start one and then there’s the brilliant Perez who has earned the right for some game time. Toney starts in the stiffs while we play our best side in the League Cup and no sentimental shite.
